Web OS and Palm - XPERIA X10 General

So I was sitting on the train thinking and I realized that if it wasn't for palms weird phone designs I wouldn't mind a web OS phone. Don't misunderstand I'm not saying anything about switching and not liking my phone it was just a thought O_O

Omg keep those sacrilegious thoughts to yourself. Lol jokes.
I agree webos does look quite nice.
I would like to have a play with it. And yes palm phone designs aren't really very good imo

webOS is pretty awesome OS.....too bad it wasnt a company like HTC that bought palm. HTC hardware + WebOS would have been awesome

I agree ,if HTC hardware had WebOS then i think big things could have happened. But then i reckon with HP backing it ther could be some good times ahead for WebOS 2 as long as it happens very soon .... being an old palm freak then i would welcome it and would seriously think about buying a handset even outside of contract if its good enough .... but it would have to be good to take away from the android and iphone market and it may be too late ??? whats all your views ????

i convinced my somehow technologically inept boss to buy one, and she totally loves it. especially the size of the phone, its definitely a lady phone, kinda like the mini pro.
web os is freaking great, especially the way it does mutli-tasking, its very elegant. but the pre is just way to small a phone for me. and the keyboard is not palms best ever. im also an old palm junkie

Apple too.
google normally does software though so im not so sure they would build a console anytime soon. some of the only hardware they "built" was the nexus one and that failed commercially.
Failed EPICALLY! I'm dropping my Evo for a winmo7 phone BUT only when the phone has a healthy amount of android roms on it like the hd2. I have the hd2 and surpisingly enough, NO sense rom (i've tried every single sense 2.2 rom for the evo on this site) runs as SMOOTHLY and as quickly as on the hd 2.
To get the speed of my hd 2 on my evo, I have to flash CM6. Kinda sad
now that i think though, anybody can throw together the hardware of a computer, its just a computer really. im not sure if we need another console though.

I honestly don't see what Microsoft is trying to accomplish with windo 7 phones... What's the purpose of playing xbox 360 games on a cell phone?
Is it me, or does it make absolutely no sense... cell phone gaming is supposed to be casual and just a "spare time" kind of thing, not hardcore call of duty stuff...
If they really wanted to enter the cell phone scheme, then they are much better off teaming up with android or ios and working out some sort of collaboration, because in all honesty android and ios pretty much have it on lock. Their just isn't much room for another... Or they could have made a hand held like the PSP...
I will bite my tongue if windo 7 phones prove to be successful and if somehow Microsoft miraculously manages to get the phones battery to run even half a day....
Just my 2 cents. Please don't start bashing. I have been keeping up with windo 7 phones since they were announced a little over a year ago and I just wanted to get how stupid I think it was out of my system.......
But who knows, this time next year chances are that I might be playing Call of Duty: ModernWarefare blackops II while taking a sht on the toilet...

If WM7 is as stable as Android, and has groundbreaking features id consider using it, but I have a feeling its just going to be a polished 6.5. I would like to see a WM7 port to the EVO just so I could try it out before I purchase a phone and be stuck with it for the next 4-6 months.
Also gaming phones didn't seem to make it in the past, like the N-guage and there was another phone I saw that had a ATI chip in it, but never went mainstream.

Windows Phone has a lot more going for it than just gaming.
First of all, gaming is definitely big. As a iPhone user I can see this. I don't even game much, but its hard to ignore the fact that the iPhone is slowly over taking mobile gaming share. MS with Xbox Live integration has a even better oppurtunity here.
Second, MS/WP 7 has the Zune software. Android sucks when it comes to media playback, so does blackberry, and even though I haven't used WebOS much, I'm lumping it in this sub par group as well. The iPhone/iPod is pretty much in another league, and the Zune software is as good or better than it.
Third, WP 7 has real and pretty good Office intergration. Might not be a big deal to you but it'll be big with business users. I don't have to deal with it much anymore but early on in my business I had a WM phone and I used excel all the time.
There's still a lot that needs to be improved but in a pool of similar OSs (Android/iOS/WebOS/Blackberry), WP feels different enough and offers enough for it to gain traction and serve a purpose.

[DISCUSSION] PalmOS vs AndroidOS Hahahahaha

my friend just tried to argue with me saying palmOS is better than androidOS
wow....
hahahhaha
Palm was the best of the smartphone/pda battle in the beginning but not for a long time. Their attemped revival a couple years ago was and is an utter failure. Have to give them credit for the beginning though. Good ole Palm pilot, lol...

Actually, the webos isnt all that bad..I used a palm pre shortly while trying out Sprint and it was rather nice. The phone itself...not so much, but the OS I found intriguing. Not as good as Android in its current state...but with a big push it could be if its not to late now.
Never had any Palm phones but briefly had a Blackberry, which is what hooked me into smart phones. Followed that up with the G1 and have yet to consider getting a non Android phone since. Android is just too snazzy. It's got everything useful and practical while being disguised as an extremely bright and shiny toy. I guess it is a bright and shiny toy but practical too!

my friends closing statement
"the battery life sucks, its too complicated, and the droids are too big(because hes on verizon)"
my closing statement,
"maybe you should try to be smarterthan your phone for once and ditch your gay ass palmpre, hipster"
I had the palm pre for quite a while and was quite happy with it. User experience is way better than android.
the good:
-Multiple exchange accounts
-to search you just start typing.
-Synergy was very nice also.
- great form factor
- no "save" button, everything autosaves
- multitasking is real visible multitasking
- no rooting needed
- some comunity patches where incorporated in new webos versions
the bad
- poor bluetooth support
- poor application support
- no decent gps software
- webos release cycle at start was great, but slabbed the last few months
Hardware was not super, but ok. I had the oreo effect but not realy bad.
Once you oc'ed the cpu from 500mhz to 800mhz it ran realy smooth.
The gestures are a super invention.
If i didn't **** up my palm, i would still use him dispite the faults.
Mix the the two together and you would get a super product.
user community, dev, applications from android
user interface and gestures from palm.
just my 2 cents
Never tried palm but I like android and this is my 2nd one.

How emotionally 'attached' are you to your X10?

A bit of a weird topic, but I got thinking today...
The X10 is my first smartphone I've ever had, before that I had a tough as nails Samsung SGH-E180, which was one of those cheap 100 dollar phones. I fell in love with the X10 after seeing my friend use one, and without even looking at the competition bought one.
And I love it to this day. Thanks to the devs at XDA, my X10 is the fastest smartphone out of all my friends (who have Desire HDs, iPhones etc) and wherever I go I get a few looks at my phone from strangers, because of it's sexiness .
Once I met another X10 owner on the subway and when we saw that we both had X10s, we had like this manly nod of approval. It was awesome.
Anyway, how much value do you hold your X10? How emotionally attached are you to it? I don't think I'll ever get rid of this phone, when I get a new one I'll probably pass it down to my brother, but I don't think I'd have the guts to get rid of the phone that brought me to the wonderful world of smartphones.
Im the same as you... The X10 is the first smartphone ive had.... and YES... i still see Sony Ericsson phones as SEXY.... damn.... if I could only upgrade the internal hardware on my X10... Id never ever replace it..... Iphone maniacs drool when they see me play Fruit Ninja or Angry Birds While playing a song on my X10..... plus. my phone looks sexier... I love my phone now... I used to doubt it back then.... (1.6) but now... I think different.
I don't think I would be as attached as I am if it weren't for the 2.1 update fiasco with AT&T and the ride Sony Ericsson took us with on Android updates and multitouch. All of which got me addicted to xda, the xda app, Android, and most of all...my X10.
Phone sucks so I got a better one. Selling my X10 and never looking back.!

I love my x10. I got an xplay now and before I bought the xplay I was thinking of using the x10 as a battery charger and use the x10 battery as a backup battery for the xplay, but I just can't bare to see the x10 switched off.
I now keep the x10 next to my bed charged and use it every now and again with WiFi
I too am the same. It is my first smartphone and I love it. To be honest, with the custom Tom's, I far prefer the x10 to my dads DHD. For some reason the x10 is just comfortable and feels good in the hands. My Gf and brother have iPhones and they get jealous (and mildly irritated) whenever I show them new features that they do not and most likely never will have. (I particularly like emailing my brother links to flash websites haha)
I don't think I could let this phone go even if I do upgrade. I too will give it to my little brother

well, same as u. i love my X10. but i will change it to HTC after working.
It's due to working purpose. ( cox going to play stock market)
if compare x10 to HTC incredible S or desire HD or sensation.. i think HTC will probably work higher performance than x10 ><
I love the device.
But the way SE treats it makes me hate them.
The x10 is capable of so much but is being treated so badly by SE it hurts.
I mostly feel the damage in my wallet.
But the x10 is really cool and not too bad for my first android device.
It has taught me a lot about android.
If I were rich, I'd be changing phones like underwear.

On topic though, i do like my phone very much, even more after finding out about xda, even with a non functioning usb hub.

I honestly do not like this phone as a whole. I only got this cause it was cheap. When possible, I'm gonna switch to another phone. For now, custom ROMs and tweaks will keep me busy.
Im not I only went with x10 as I got it at a reduced price, I prefer the Desire HD but could not afford that, I love the speed of the unit compared to my HTC Magic. but this is the last of a long line of smartphones so I am not blinded by the virgin user wow.
The hardware buttons annoy me and constantly turn the phone on, the flap on the usb REALLY winds me up and why it has the usb at the top.
Would swap without hesitation for a desire HD, so no emotional attachment for me
Very much until I found out mine had a problem with the motherboard overheating. Now it's pretty much nothing since I'm pretty happy now with my Motorola Atrix
Well the x10 was my first smartphone and I loved it. But I eventually got bored and I now have an inspire and have never looked back!
If you don't like, love or cherish your x10, then you are probably using it wrong
Quite a lot. I mean I sent it for the repair. It's been 9 days now and i missed it sooo much!
I was walking around the mall checking out iPhone 4, Xperia Arc, LG Optimus 2x etcetera etcetera and i say to myself 'nah I love my x10 i can wait'
Maybe it's because this is my first Smartphone =3
On a scale of 1 - 10
I would be around 9.
I am very emotionally attached to my x10.
I would consider that it is my very first smartphone (but i used asus windows phone 6.5)
I bought the x10 the first day it came out and went through a series of emotion with it. The year 2010 was a wild ride for me and this phone is a sign of these emotions.
If I were to lose this phone, I would be very sad.
I can get quite emo
Funny that we have posts in this thread from people who have gotten rid of their X10 because they were not attached to it, yet they are still browsing the X10 forums?????
Would swap it for an arc in a heartbeat, simply for the better screen responsivity and smoothness

Unfortunately no, they're shutting everything but Copiers/Printers. WebOS is done for. Why HP would destroy Palm's legacy I'll never know.
Sent from Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?
The previous CEO of Palm, Mark Hurd is the guy who bought Palm. He saw the purchase as a way for HP to become like Apple; a company that can marry Software and Hardware beautifully and sell products at high profit. It is very hard to do and you need to put a lot of resources and money in both hardware and software. Unfortunately he was kicked out of HP due to his Mistress expense report scandal.
The current CEO of Palm, Leo Apotheker doesn't share that same vision for Palm. He saw HP more as IBM; a company that can provide software solutions only. I think Apotheker tried out Hurd's way but he had a real short leash and didn't put much resource and money into it.
HP is apparently going into the "Cloud" biz, they are making a run at buying Autonomy, a vendor that provides document viewing capabilities (amongst other things) for $10 M.
I think this is a huge mistake as they could have been poised to eventually take advantage of all the RIM screwups.
As one who eventually crossed over to the "dark side" of Android from 10+ years of Palm and a 2 Pre family, this is really dissapointing. Over time (about 36 hours to be exact) I learned to really appreciate the Android OS and leave that beautiful, silky smooth, digital honey of an OS (WebOS) behind. As a past WebOS dev, I recently received a nice temptation in $100 off the new WebOS tablet. Dont think I am going to purchase one now.
WebOS to this day is still the only true multi-tasking mobile OS and I hope Google has the "smarts" to gobble it up before Apple jumps on it.
RIP WebOS
WebOS should have been huge. Shame how it was mismanaged. I'm glad to be on Android but competition really is good for everyone.
This is very interesting. Seeing that my entire company is primarily a HP shop!
HP would be smart to license out WebOS to tablet and phone manufacturers. The problem with Palm was the crappy hardware. I would think Samsung's, HTC's, etc high end hardware running WebOS could be an instant hit.
I understand why they are stopping tablets and phones they didn't stand a chance. They would have been better off using either windows or android instead of thinking their os was gonna be some big welcoming although some of you seemed to have liked it I didn't really care for it. But stopping or selling their pc business that's a dumb move on their part I think and there stock is suffering already from it pretty bad.

It wasn't just hardware issues. Their ad campaign was awful, they shouldn't have made the Pre exclusive to Sprint (much as I love them), and they had a months-long delay between announcement and launch. If they would have done just those things better, WebOS and Palm would probably be thriving today. No one wants WebOS anymore for phones, it's going to be Android dominance of everything except Apple's loyal niche. If MS didn't have so much cash to burn Windows Phone 7 would already be in a hospice. I wonder if they will eventually give up on it.
There's probably going to be a IP auction over webos patents and palm remains now. And microsoft, apple and google could all use the bits and pieces even to just screw with the competition...
As for the pcs, u will get support. Besides, it will be a phase out and they'll likely just spin off compaq as the hardware devision. Or sell it like ibm. But pcs r dying. They will go the way of the cd soon... lol

Web OS failed cuz of the hardware. They didnt know how to implement it.
I wouldve got a pre if the screen was bigger. I got excited for the pre 2 (mind you i was on epic) but they messed it up by pulling a rim and releasing the same exact form factor.
The pre 3 is stupid looking.

Funny as I was checking on replies for this thread,I am also right in the middle of an article from yahoo news saying that Blackberry is dying a slow painful death(kind of,they just didn't shout it out loud to Bb's)
I've never used an iPhone long enough to actually make a comparison, i do love the smoothness of iOS but the idea of getting stuck with iTunes turns me off. I've read that ICS will have hardware acceleration, so the smoothness may be solved as soon as ICS is ported to x10 through CM9, MIUI etc.
the other thing that used to attract me was the enourmous game library, but lately nearly every game i hear about on iOS gets an Android port so, i'm ok with that.
an idiotphone? No, never, you just sent a shiver down my back thinking about it
I'd never use an iPhone, NEVER.
you have to go through a whole lot of trouble to stay up to date with an iphone, jailbrake, make sure you don't update to an unjailbreakable version, buy the new phone when it comes out 6 months later...

stuff that isn't compatible simply doesn't show in the market, believe me there would be about an equal amount of apps you couldn't run on the x10 and iPhone 3g..
I dont hate the apple products but lets say i just prefer the android os.
because IOS is very boring not much customisable
i mean when i flick through my homescreen on x10 i dont get bored ! On iphone there is no widget so really boring homescreens.
let alone the fact no app drawer you can barely see the wallpaper you have set lol...

Maybe not on the Market app on the phone but on the Market website, even from the phone, they do show. And up on the left hand side it says it's not compatible with your [insert phone model here].
Edit: On topic, only if it were free (to play around with, not for daily use) or if someone paid me. I only put iTunes on a PC once (a spare pc at that) and only cause someone paid me to put their cds onto their iPod.
No one can deny the smoothness of iOS(i haven't used android 4 still).
At first I loved iOS before i even knew about android. But after using an Android phone I don't think I would go back(unless they do something extraordinary changes in OS ).
Android on apple hardware is my dream lol
no offence to anyone
Nothing wrong with an iphone , excellent phones... this is my first smart phone oddly enough, never was into phones...until I got my hands on this one...wow what an experience. Never judge a book by its cover.

To think about this again, back then,I never dislike neither its products, nor the user themselves(now I can say I hate both)...I used to even think that they are a great innovator when they first released an IPhone(even though overpriced).
First,it all started whenever I talk to Apple user,it borings me because everytime we talk about technology, there is none besides what Apple brings to the table(sigh). It would even bothers me when we even discuss about media download, when I say a decent 320kbps mp3 music file is enough for me,they will deny it by saying nothing is acceptable if its not lossless. When I say that a normal BRrip avi file is already more than watchable enough, they will say nothing is like mkv.
And it really sickens me when I say 4 inch screen is nice when I watch youtube on it,they will say,TOO BIG,
when I say a new phone just came out with dual core processor, they will say it is UNNECESSARY,
when I say it is good that now we have a lot of choices for smartphone, they will say FRAGMENTATION.....
And the list goes on.
And to the point I see almost all Apple Users are all F**k Up.I start to notice whoever own one of the IDevices, there is a need for them to flash it public and brag about how cool it is when possible....
And as for Apple Inc.,when they sue Samsung for rounded edges,I think they just wanna protect their rights, but lately it doesn't seem so,it is more like they are all against all the android big boys(Samsung,Htc,Motorola). And they have already stop innovating something that is cool enough to the eyes of the most people and try clinging to the only products that is sell-able for as long as they can.And to do that, they need to take everyone else out by keep suing them.
Latest court case they won against HTC is based on auto-parsing,which whenever you get a phone number via short message, the phone will recognize it,you can dial it from the dial pad straight away....and such thing.I think my 8 years Sony Ericsson P990i can already do that(if not older),such claim is bad for all of us consumer,at least from my point of view.
And recently,Apple file up a case against Samsung again for infringement on about 10 FREAKING PHONE CASING...can you believe that?
I think Apple R&D is already dying...no new products to keep up,and yet they need to make money as much as they can.
And for today,I think Apple should just go to hell...the way I see it I'm not going to buy anything from them and not in the near future....
I wouldn't switch either. I just love playing around with android too much.
That being said, I do use my girlfriends iPhone for games when we are bored. That and for photography because android photo apps just seem sub par sadly.

I've got a 3Gs for as my work phone. I barely touch it. It's running IOS 5.0.1 and it's rendered it mostly unusable. battery life is poultry, phone is laggy & unresponsive as heck, and if i visit a website that requires login or user input to continue, I get stuck in a login screen loop. Add iTunes to this and it's really just a nightmare. We've started setting the partners up with 4S's, and while they are admittedly quite speedy/smooth, itunes still ruins the experience. As well as the boring interface.
I'm not a big fan of the hardware design either. There are much nicer looking phones about.

Haha agreed...
What's funny is how they're suing everyone in sight, yet stealing ideas more than anyone else. (drop down notification blind anyone?)
Not to mention Samsung produces the entire iPhone pretty well, yet apple has the gull to sue them?
They're a slimy company..
Look at their mark up on components as a prime example, especially for macbooks
