So I decided I'd give the new official update for the HTC aria a shot despite all the talk about not being able to root it yet. So far some pretty important things I've noticed is the fact that there is no sideloading. I saw someone on here say that it would be able to sideload - incorrect. The second big thing is the fact that it does not have the touchpad button wake. You have to use the power button which is a huge flaw for me. Someone also said that it would be capable of overclocking- as far as I know right now I don't think you can, but I can't be 100% sure yet because of the lack of sideloading and the 4.99 for setcpu. Some of the cool new features I do like is the mobile hotspot capabilities, live wallpapers, and the market update. So now I want to see what others have to say about it. Please come tell me what you've found!

Did it work?
I want to understand ..
The updates are made automatically?
If I purchased from ebay the device in 3 / 3 and it had not arrived yet, am I expected to see within 2.2 and unable to root?

Did you purchase a used phone? Was it already rooted? Did the seller install the latest update from HTC/AT&T?
The 2.2 update from at&t is not an Over-the-air (OTA) update. It's offered by at&t via the HTC web site. The update, therefore, takes work on the user's part. It's not automatic.
That said, if you purchase a phone from eBay that is factory fresh from at&t, it's possible it already has the 2.2 update - I put the odds at 50%.
For what it's worth, the only thing wrong with the stock build of this device's ROM is the at&t bloatware/crapware. Other than that, it's a solid device, and there are ways to customize the phone to your liking.

don't worry about side-loading.
Use the stock HTC sync software that came with your Aria - when prompted to update, don't do it!

If it is what it looks like, (US version/AT&T branded) then you should be able to root no problem with unrevoked

I'm not sure about enabling RTL support, but I think people have been talking about it on these forums.
At first my phone felt quick when it was processing, but initial response to screen presses felt slightly laggy. I was concerned. But after running it for a few weeks now, without a task killer, it feels like quite a quick more featured phone. Seems like there was a calibration and optimization duration there. Maybe it's in my head? Very happy with the upgrade, especially for apps to SD!
Oh, and add gingerbread keyboard from the market and the phone is twice as good!

You can do side loading by using android injector. You can find it at at harmonyhollow or softpedia. Just type in Android Injector at google. It also allows you to install multiple apps at the same time.

How do you get Apps to SD to work on this rom?
In the past I was using Darktremor's a2sd preinstalled on the Liberated Aria roms.
I am now on the Liberated version of the rom (thanks to Gene Poole - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970272), but I don't know how to do apps2sd here. I have my sdcard partitioned with ext3 (512 Mb), but it's not getting used automatically.

It looks like changing the dates/time on our clocks have no effect on whether or not you WILL receive the update, just how fast you get it if you were already part of the group scheduled to receive it. It looks like the Google servers picks a list of Xooms that are next for the updates, and pushes those updates to each Xoom on that "list" when your device communicates with the google servers. So, in short, you get the update when your number is called...so changing the dates will not guarantee you an update, you HAVE to be on the next phase list. So those who changed their dates on the Xoom were already on the phase list, they just got their updates faster because they forced their Xooms to communicate with google's servers quicker by forcing an update check. Hope that makes sense guys
Is this supposed to make me feel better?
no, but it just explains what your doing when your changing the time. If your not on the list you won't get it, but it does its check only so often so changing the date is a guarentee whether or not your on the list to get the update pushed. This way people can understand what theyre doing and not have to complain.

LOL..No, it doesn't make me feel better either, but at least you can get an idea of how it works. It would be nice to know how often and when does Google send out the updates from their servers, so we push our Xooms to check for updates during those times!
So ....
If we missed out on the update for whatever reason can we expect our number to be called again?

you cant miss the update, your "Xoom ID" is stored in each phase, so if your group was sent the update and your Xoom was powered off, etc.. once you turn your Xoom on, the Xoom will check in with the Google server, and the server will automatically send you the update.

Well in 3.1 they added a check now ability for the system update. So they should let us know a little more about how they implement Over The Air updates. I'd imagine if the majority of the users on the list that is available checked as soon as it came out there might be an issue with server power or whatever. But I dont understand what is taking so long, and if more people buy xooms how long will it take next time?

it wont cause any server issues whatsoever, if they wanted to push out the updates to everyone immediately, they can with a push of a button (literally) My guess is that they are just playing it safe in the event that something goes wrong with the updates, better to have a small group with problems instead of EVERY single Tablet owner. I was told that the the list of each group in every phase grows as long as there are no reported issues with the updates.
I don't know about you, but I haven't seen one thing about 3.1 screwing up anything, so push that button.

LMAO!!! Seriously, I think Google likes torturing people! Maybe if we all sign disclaimers they will push the update to all tab owners at once...send me the form to sign Google!!
Push the freekin button already!
Like they're doing OTA updates to one up Apple pretty much, and it is just a fail unless your the one sitting there with 3.1... then again I did always have to wait a month or so with my iPhone for the jailbreak community to make the update... but like, this is for stock I'm waiting. I feel like I'm in court for a traffic ticket waiting for the judge to call my name.

HA! Exactly! We should start a petition: "PUSH THE BUTTON, GOOGLE!"
(in case it doesn't come across, I'm kidding about the petition.)
there should be an option to update manually from your computer like apple does, or just wait for ota...
I just got the OTA update last night...glad i didn't have to wait too long...
at 1st i was changing dates every hour or so...then just said hell with it when it comes it comes...lol
What I really really want to know is if having a rooted xoom and an overclock kernel excludes me from the update or makes me incompatible.
I have seen people say that as soon as they reverted to stock they received the update. I also know that rooted users cash manually install it through adb but I don't have experience with that and would rather do something easier.
In essence if I wait long enough, can I still get 3.1 OTA even though rooted, etc etc?

If you are rooted, the OTA update will fail on install when it comes. You can either 1) Go back to stock and wait or, 2) Do the install methods available for rooted users in the Development section.

Anyone heard anything about when the tablet optimised version of this is likely to hit? I've got it running on the Iconia but it's not the smoothest experience. Much better on my Xperia Arc at the moment! Hoping 3.1 will bring an improvement.
when you say running how long does it last before it FC? I just walk for less than a minute it bam fc....
works great for me. Only the character select screen lags a bit. I'm using 1.0.1 on the leaked 3.1 build.
Mine doesnt crash but the display doesnt fit properly and it lags. However I am still on 3.0.1 so heres hoping it will work after update!

Wow OK updated to 1.0.1 and its very good, even the cut off parts are gone. Well what I mean is there is no more cut off well just look at the pics below I'm currently using virtous Picasso 1.0.2 and other was on prime rom.
How did you get it to run on the Iconia?
Market wont let me download because its not compatible with my Acer A500??
Edit: nevermind, did a search for all devices version and could install the bugger
Purchased it from a compatible device tho, just to be on the legal side....
Question now is: i wont get updates the normal way now because Iconia market does not show the game even if purchased, grmpf:
Guess for the long term we have to wait for a lazy gameloft dev to extend the compatibility list for the game (played about 2 hours w/o a single crash yesterday, so the Iconia can handle the game sweetly.

Yeah, same here. Times out every time
dont know if it just me but anyone have the "your system is not compatible"?
I been playing really good logged off then I tried logging back in and nada.
Maybe Gameloft finally detected the non approved system and blocked it?
No such issue here...
For me it force closes from time to time just after during startup (same applies to some other games/apps).
Also i had a "License invalid" once, but after another restart it was ok.
Hello all,
Did anyone else notice that the v3 of Android Market is quite buggy when it comes to updating apps?
It's been twice in a few days that I had the same issue: when I go to "my applications", see that one can be updated (because in spite of having checked the "check for update" button, it rarely indicates me that updates are available, at least not after a few days), click on it and select "update", it just keeps on showing "charging" on the screen, without network error and without getting to the page where I can accept the update (I am not talking about downloading the app itself, but just charging the final page where I can accept the download).
I did manage a few days ago, after having wiped clear the Market cache and data, to update one of my app (titanium backup). But today, when trying to update "text edit", I found that the problem re-appeared (it has kept on "charging" for 5 minutes without giving me the page where I can accept the update).
It seems to behave well if I try to add new apps, it just completely bugs when I try to update my apps.
I also didn't like the new market. I get notification that there are updates available but when i click i don't see the updates.
Restoring apps with titanium backup doesn't make the app show up in my apps so i dont get update notification. But when i search the app it shows installed and that there is a update.
Getting in the market is also slow. I hope it gets fixxed and responds quicker

No more automatic updates (really automatic - without my intervention)
Slow as hell, it's really FRUSTRATING, such a fast device, such slow Market
I hate it, the worst Android app ever, the least responsive.
The best way to discourage people from using the market - congratulations Google on that!
True, speed sucks with the new market. As well as prompting you for an update when there is no update. Hopefully they'll optimize it seeing it's so crappy on a device like SII, wonder how fast is it on a low spec device
How do you go back to the original market, is there an apk available?
Market has been an android embarrassment since day 1.
They need to copy apple on this one.
The leaked versions floating around all were quite buggy for me with all of them having different problems but the official one that was released actually works fine for me. Are you all using the official one that was released or the later/earlier leaked versions floating around?

I never did anything to get the new market. It just was here one day, without any notification of update (in a sense, this is quite strange for an app to be updated without even giving a notification).
My version is 3.1.3.
You can't go back, after some use, it would automatically update itself again, I too have been having issues where an app says there is an update, and I don't get the option to click on update.
Hopefully google just went with the new design with plans to optimize it as we moving along, cause it is a bit to slow and buggy right now.

+1. I have also had an issue where the new market just sits there and loads forever when trying to download or update an app.
Also timeouts when I have a steady internet connection forcing me to press the retry button.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I don't quite understand how users are supposed to receive the new Google Play Services update with the Android Device Manager built in to it.
AndroidPolice said it would be a slow rollout over the Play Store, but it's not even a listed app there, so that makes no sense to me. They had some apk downloads, but they advised against downloading them, since there are different versions for differently sized devices.
So how do we receive this update? Is it only via an updated ROM/OTA/manual download? Seems like if that's the case, then the whole notion of pushing it to the public with older 2.2 devices is a pipedream.
I feel like that plus updates to the Google Play Store are not handled very well. Everything is a just a paper release, and the vast majority of the Android population never sees any of it.
It appears to be more of a silent update. I didn't get a notification when mine was updated.
It will be listed in settings -> more -> security -> device administration
