Will we REALLY get froyo? - Fascinate General

The title says it all. Will we ever really get froyo? On starting to doubt it. Just curious what others think. Hopefully someone here is the head software engineer at Samsung

from the fascinate page on samsungs site:
" Powered by the latest Android platform (and upgradeable to 2.2), this phone fully integrates with Google Mobile Services. You're now at one with your Gmail account, Google Maps, YouTube videos and more."
Plus Verizon publicly stated we will be able to use google search over bing when it is upgraded to Froyo
i dont know when, but it will come

No one knows.
I do think that Samsung's credability in the android world is at stake. Right now they are NOT LOOKING GOOD and boring the hell out of me. WTF is the problem?

Wow guys, have some patients, the phone has been out for 14 days. I realize Froyo has been out for longer than that but jeez, relax. To say "are we ever gonna get it" is a little ridiculous. Just sit back and enjoy your new toy, its already great. Or maybe get off your comp and go find a lady to keep you busy for a change

Um, anyone following the news should not be doubting this. Samsung announced that Froyo will be out for the Galaxy S by the end of October. The US variants should follow shortly afterward.

Look at the back of the media dock and it will answer your question.

This. It took me around 3 months to get Froyo for my Droid X, so 14 days isn't really that much time. All signs point to it being out within the next few months. To be honest, I'm enjoying my Fascinate the way it is now, I just got everything set up the way I want. That's not to say that 2.2 wouldn't be a welcome addition, I just know how much of a pain it's been getting it functioning properly on my last 3 devices.

I am really not in a huge hurry to get it. My phone is working great, just as my Droid 1 was working before 2.2 fried it and there began my move to the fascinate. They gave me junk replacement phones for my 6 month old, like new Droid, then they gave me a Droid 2 and extended my contract without my knowing, so I kicked and screamed and got the droid 2 exchanged for the Fascinate. So it is a little worrysome to me to think about frying another phone with a 2.2 update.

We will have Froyo by the end of October. This came from MULTIPLE Verizon Reps.

I'm not holding my breath for any release date. It will be out when it's out. The only big things I'm interested in are increased speed, USB tether, and enterprise security features, and since my phone is already quite fast, I have wifi tethering, and use Touchdown for proper Exchange connectivity, I have no problem waiting. I will be disappointed if it doesn't come out this year though.

The Captivate just got Froyo leaked. Can we be far behind?
I can't post links yet. See thread ID 797282 from the Captivate forums.
Fingers crossed...

I hope it is coming soon. I can't wait for ROMs and kernels. And can you imagine how fast this will be with Froyo? It's already much faster on 2.1 than any phone I've used on 2.2, overclocked or not.

As early as this month doesn't sound too concrete or confirmed to me. They haven't even pushed the 2.1 update with gps fix. I hope I'm wrong though.
As far as I know, this is coming from a Samsung tech employee in Finland, and is only stated for the international Galaxy S. I wouldn't expect this by the end of the month for our US Vibrant.
T's Response
I called T today to find out about the GPS fix that was leaked to come out today. I was transferred to T's Android Rep who stated that the GPS Fix is to be included in 2.2 and that he did not have a time for the release. He could not even speculate on the time frame for a release but that it was in the works and coming soon. I would not expect the update till late November but before Christmas. It could be pushed back even farther if there is any chance of there being some issues with the update to 2.2 The last thing Sam and T want is bad PR it would be a loss of sales and loss of customers. I believe they are going to test the crap out of the 2.2 update which will be nice to have a great stock rom.

Stop with your speculation. If Samsung waited till November, no one in these forums would still have a Vibrant. Every other phone to come out in the last few months has been updated to froyo (Droid X will be out soon, but has seen many leaked versions). Waiting till November would be a deathwish for Samsung. By then, Gingerbread might be out then the whole process would start over again.

you know what. im kinda tired of seeing these threads. I think Sammy And Tmo are gonna take there sweet ass time with this. I went through all the Vibrant Facebook Pages and found the one mentioning Froyo and there is no way in hell that is a Samsung managed page.
a) They bag on the Captivate - Samsung wouldn't do that
b) July 14th - Said "I just played with one" - Why would Samsung say that?
c) "Their review" links to http://thetechninja.wordpress.com/ - Why would Samsung do a review of their own phone?
So, rumor squashed, there is absolutely no basis for believing anything posted to that page. The OP here should not have said its the official Vibrant page when it clearly isnt.

As ususal, Engadget gets it wrong. They can't even read a press release, and never bothered to pick up the phone and call Samsung. This announcement was datelined from London and about the UK, which is clear from its context.
See also this thread in Vibrant forum.
p.s. As recently as a few minutes ago, Samsung's Galaxy S support site for the U.S. on Twitter was saying there is not ETA for Froyo on this side of the pond at all.
Deployment for the Epic is even more complicated than the rollout for the GSM-based variants in the U.S. If the Epic gets Froyo in November, I will be most pleasantly surprised.
one way or another it seems like typical samsung taking forever to release an update

I'm inclined to believe this since Rogers in Canada is saying their version of the Captivate will get Froyo in 2011. If Froyo was ready in 2010, everywhere else in the world, why would Rogers tell their customers to expect it in 2011?

What? You want to wait until 2012 to get a new OS update?
What does 2.2 offer that you can't have on 2.1? I just don't see what the big deal is anyways. Is everyone that unsatisfied with their phone that they are getting bent out of shape about 2.2? This is Sprint and Samsung we are talking about right? I fully expect it to be here in January or February. In the mean time, I will enjoy my Epic with 2.1 Which is still better than the Evo on 2.2, imho.

I heard flash sucked with 2.2 but that's just me. Granted it's nice to have and it's something the I-suck doesn't have so that's always a plus.
Phone is plenty fast for me but I don't do anything extensive on it. Even when it drops I'll probably still wait a while to see if it's even worth it. Reading the Evo forums, it sounded like it was more trouble than it was worth and broke more things than fixed.

Yeah I went to the Sprint store when I went and bought my case for my Epic and messed around with an Evo..be it a display, and they had a screen protector on it, the screened looked REALLY grainy, and it was very very slow. I'm guessing it hadn't been restarted in awhile and had every app open on it running in the background. I checked it and sure enough it was running on 2.2.

Samsung Galaxy S phone may skip 2.2 and jump to 2.3 gingerbread

Highly doubtful.
Epic just upgraded to 2.2, and Vibrant was scheduled last week but got postponed a week. If we were going to see 2.3 instead, then we'd have to wait months...first Samsung would release to International Galaxy S, then give it to all the carriers who then make modifications.
At this point all the carriers have been working on 2.2 so I doubt they would drop doing their work on this to skip over froyo.
i wouldnt be surpised if we skip all updates straight into 3.0 after all not the first time samsung ****ed us(all galaxy s will get 2.2 SHORTY after release).
At this point, I don't have too much hope for 2.2. I've seen in the past with other devices and OS that VZW skip a release or two because it failed their internal testing or something. I wouldn't be surprise if 2.2 was like that

Seems this is becoming a common sentiment. Go figure, right?
It seems as if Verizon is putting all of its eggs in the Motorola basket. They get updates/fixes galore.
I will be furious if the Fascinate goes the way of the Droid Eris (what I JUST upgraded from). Fortunatley, instead of burning an upgrae, I bought off of Craigslist.
maybe we will at least see a 2.3 leak one day!
We're going to get 2.3 eventually.
You guys can't blame Verizon for us not having froyo. If t mobile is so great why don't the vibrant have it? And sprints testing is poopoo, if you read about their new froyo, I don't think anyone is impressed

Yeah I absolutely love the irony of everyone jumping ship from Verizon when the other devices haven't got Froyo either. When T-Mobile gets Froyo onto the Vibrant we shall see. The Epic is different hardware (different enough that Samsung probably shipped different drivers/RIL). This entire attitude of "verizon sucks" is just laughable at this point.

T-Mo sucks and has the spottiest data coverage of any carrier I have ever used. I can remember driving down the highway, using my Nexus One in the car cradle, and having to wait for Google Maps to load up my current location because the buffered map areas couldn't keep up since the data connection kept going up and down. I could get across the city so quick on the highway that the network could not seemlessly handle me moving across the network so fast. Verizon has been a breath of fresh air compared to T-Mo, and the only thing I miss is the control I had with my Nexus One. That said, the screen on this phone is nice and is really the top of the class. We will get 2.2 soon enough, and with the proper foundation, I would think creating 2.3 ROMs will be an easy prospect.

gingerbread is coming!!!

My understanding is that the Nexus S (like the Nexus One) is a stripped down, super-phone, demonstration of new technology and in this case the most notable difference would be the form factor and the NFC. I think Sammy would face more backlash from consumers for ignoring hardware customers already paid for so as to make a new product with near-identical hardware better.
I would assume to have a 2.3 powerhouse phone on all major carriers for bragging and sales purposes. Would make a ton of sense.

Personally, I'd never heard of him but I've requested to follow him on twitter. In the end we'll just have to wait and see but it would be nice. If this update were coming soon I think there would be some RCs floating around but seeing as we have Froyo ones and a 'near-official' OTA update that went to .4 phones its hard to know if we'll skip 2.2 and go right to 2.3. I want this to happen but the evidence I have right now would seem to go against this.
I honestly though don't care about gingerbread all that much. I'm planning to have this phone for awhile. It does everything I need with ease. Big difference from when I had the Moment and from day 1 felt the need to smash it into a wall because of how slow and laggy it was. I would hope samsung realizes this isn't a phone to cut ties with because it defintely has staying power even after it's superceded by something faster on paper but probably only marginably faster in real world use.

With how good samsung did with sales from all the galaxy s phones, i wouldnt be surprised that they would do this.. that would be so sweet to have gingerbread on epic and since its on the nexus s with samehardware screen and stats, makes sense they could upgrade all variants epic will definitly be the top of the line if it got gingerbread, but also i agree with the poster above about caring less as long as i have a good running phone with 2.2 ill be set til the dual core processors come out and another top of the line phone comes out for sprint next year or 2 years,

Indeed. I spent months reading about how my Mytouch was getting Eclair only to be let down every time. I will say that if they do leapfrog 2.2 and get my device up-to-android-date then when I buy my fiancee's new phone in about a month she'll be getting a Sammy device. Otherwise, I'm not going to get her a phone that's always out-of-date.
Now if we dont receive an update b4 january first for anything this might prove that we will have gingerbread later and prove that they skipped froyo.
I mean if they dont give us froyo b4 the end of the year like they promised, they could be working on gingerbread we shall see by the end of this month.
The only thing I am not looking forward to is the possible return of these forums turning into unreadable garbage of people trolling, fighting and starting multiple threads about when or why Gingerbread is/isn't on the epic.
This thread has been nice though.

Has there been any news on this? I mean its going to be February tomorrow, and I was just wondering where the hell all this furor over the delayed updates went. Sprint hasn't really said anything concrete, neither has Samsung so I'm honestly pretty pissed...
I sprint tech told me samsung still have the froyo and sprint haven't received it yet.. He states we was one of the testers and have no ideal of a release date cause sprint doesn't haven't anything to test yet ... This was a few days ago

Sprint has it and it works Great. They are just trying to figure out a way to charge ALL their customers and extra 10.00 per month to get it, even if you don't have an Android Phone.
They've already annoucned that they're going to begin doing that haha.
Seriously though, where did all teh furor over this go? I remember a few weeks ago people were going crazy over this, and I haven't heard a single mention of it as of yet...

I think everyone has given up on ranting.

That's how I got rid of my annoying ex-girlfriend too. It's foolproof.

Yes. Customer will go away and give money to someone else.
I used to work in collections. One often repeated mantra of collections was "If they're yelling, you're still on the right track to get paid." If they stopped yelling, they no longer cared. In business, it is a bad sign if complaints grind to a halt, as it likely indicates an upcoming exodus of customers.
I probably won't leave Sprint, but in spite of how much I enjoy the Epic as it is, the fact that it is taking so long to be able to enjoy the Epic as it could be will likely have me looking at LG and/or HTC phones next time around.
Same here, I like sprint but I'll no longer buy samsung phones anymore because this sucks big time. I no longer care for an update, it will come when it comes I'm just waiting 1 yr goes by to purchase another phone and more likely will be a HTC, I love their keyboards.

That's where I am.... mostly happy with DK28 and the custom roms. I'll be considering HTC next time... it's a shame the EVO was so damn slow compared to the SGS series because that would have been a decent competitor.

My last phone was a TP2. It shipped with WM 6.1 but 6.5 was released shortly after the phone was released. It took about 6 months for Sprint and HTC to release 6.5, and the whole time people were pissing and moaning about it on all the boards. Plus, many users (includinng me) had screens that failed in the first year. It aint any better in the HTC world.
