I updated my friend's Droid X that was running stock 2.1. to 2.2 today and she is about to have a cow with her SMS program now. She's running the stock messaging app and when she gets a new message it is putting the message at the bottom of the screen, with previous messages by people above and below it. After she replies to the message it moves to the top of the screen. She has a friend who is encountering the same thing. I also tried to see if I could duplicate this in Chomp SMS and I did indeed encounter the same problem. Is anyone else running into this problem?
YES!
I thought it was just me. This has been driving me crazy. I'm on the .15 leak for what it's worth.
Same issue with handsent sms. Just about to unistall it....but I guess i'll just have to suffer with it.
same here .15
I've seen this on the last two leaks and the official 2.2. ChompSMS is way off (still) and Handcent works but is still a little buggy. Sometimes one or two convos are out of order. When I go to the stock SMS app, it's out of order there, too- so I assume it's a 2.2 bug. Along with the constant force closing when accessing Battery Manager.

From this thread and my experience it seems as if the Vibrant based roms (Cog 2.4) do not have this issue. This lead me to cruise around the vibrant section and I found a couple useful files.
Applying sombionix's modified TW MMS file on clockwork has seemed to have fixed the issue for me. I do need to use/test it for a little longer to be sure. I triedseveral times to reproduce the bug and it is texting the right people If it didn't have that stupid gloss look it would be perfect
I am going to give this a tryCyanogenMod 6 MMS Modified for puzzle lock by untermensch . Since it is part of CM this should 100% not have the issue, and it is nicely modified to make use of the puzzle lock screen.
---------------------------
From what I understand this is an issue with all froyo roms, I have experienced this with most cognition builds since 2.2b3-2.3b3. When switching between a message conversation and new messages in the stock messaging app, messages are often sent to the wrong person.
I am going to try my best to describe what I believe leads to the problem, these steps may not replicate the issue exactly:
1. I must have just recieved and replied to a message conversation with "individual A"
2. I receive a message from "individual B"
3. Without leaving A's conversation I pull down the notification bar, and access "B's" new message and conversation.
4. while viewing "individual B's" conversation i try to send a reply to B, but it switches me back to "individual A's" conversation and sends them the reply (instead of B).
This has been very frustrating, embarrassing, and incriminating -- especially when I have accidentally sent messages to my boss, mother, and certain coworkers that don't understand some of the "things" me and my friends txt about.
I have created this thread to hopefully get everyone thinking about a way to fix this. In my opinion this is one of the biggest bugs with the Froyo roms.
If you have something constructive to add please join in the discussion. Suggestions like, do not use the notification bar, or install handcent are not helpful.
Thanks!
I use chompsms and have never had that problem, even with the quick reply feature.
I use the default sms, and have no such problem.
Get rid of the ( and ) in your contact numbers.
I don't know what to tell you man, I just tried this on Cog 2.3b3 and couldn't replicate your problem.
Perhaps you haven't found all required pieces to replicate the issue.
And shouldn't this be in the general Q&A forum?
I too have had this problem. Has gotten me in a lot of trouble also I just don't use the notification bar anymore. Your not the only one

I have had the issue with some of the ROMs. With 2.4, everything seems ok.
wow! I have not had this problem yet, but thanks for the heads up. this could really get me in trouble with the wifey.
This *almost* got my ass on fire. Thankfully it was vague and didnt cause any alarms. We gotta figure it out, and also. When i open up the messaging app from the icon on the home screen, instead of going to the person i was talking to last, it goes to someone in the middle of the convo list.
Now i made it a habit of looking at who im texting before clicking on the send button.

I started using handcent when I first got my phone and haven't looked back.

cog 2.4 doesn't have this issue
I have the same problem!
It is extremely frustrating and embarrassing sometimes! (especially if you are talking about a girl and you mistexted.... to the girl!)
Im running cog 2.2 and gonna upgrade to 2.4 to see if that fixes the problem.
I just switched to cog 2.3b4 from 2.4.1 and the issue is back. I am gonna try using the Mms.apk from the vibrant build to sweet if that fixes the problem.
It is annoying that my first couple hours on 2.3.b4 I already noticed the bug. I didn't have any issues with 2.4.1 in the few days I used it.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is are those having these issues (I have never had this issue) restoring old texts after flashing? Use handcent myself

I don't restore texts and I get this issue a lot. It seems to happen most when I'm already in one persons text, I get a notification for a new text from another person, so I go to the text using notification pulldown. Once i type and hit reply, it moves the text to the person who's text I was in before I recieved the new one.
I hope that wording makes sense lol.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841011 I just flashed that in cwm and I wasn't able to reproduce the issue.
I will see if it fixes the problem completely. It is really easy to apply if anyone else wants to try it.

Because you use hand cent is exactly why you don't get it.
I just about got into this very trouble the other day. I am running cog 2.4.1, and if I reply to a message from the drop down menu from the top, it sends it to the last person I was talking to in the messaging folder. Regardless of who it says you are texting! This really needs to be fixed. The person I'm talking about isn't always the last one I talked to!

Whoa, you got the issue on 2.4? I usually have the bug effect me once every couple days, but while on 2.4 I haven't noticed. I have been trying to make it happen with the vibrant mms.apk, but I haven't been effected yet.
I really hope designgears notices this problem and helps fix outif it exists in the vibrant based roms too.
Yep. And I do not restore messages either. When I wipe one, I wipe it!
I think it can be reproduced by going to the messages folder and texting some one. (Person a) then after you have replayed to person a, have person b text u. Answer with the pull down menu from the top. It worls the first time, not after that, and although it says its going to person b, it is really going to person a. Some times it takes several seconds for the names to change. I actually sent 3 txt back to back to the wrong person! Had to hit the back button to get back to the root of the message folder to see they all went to the wrong person. It clearly said it was going to person b!
Hello Folks,
I have come across an Article in BBC News : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12138790
It points out at a potential bug in Android OS which causes messaging problems. I have personally noticed this issue. I am a heavy texting person and sometimes when I open a Conversation Thread just after I send a message and before the Conversation App Refreshes, I am pointed to the wrong Conversation Thread. Noticed it many times, I thought it might be an issue with Samsung (As Always), but I was wrong. Interesting to note that Galaxy S is also affected.
The above issue Pinpointed :
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9392#c1460
EDIT: Also noticed sometimes that when I send a message to person A, and I get a new message from person B, when I click on the New Message Notification from the Notification bar, I am sometimes presented with the Thread of person A rather than Person B.
Have to see how Sammy Responds.
Anyone Noticed Similar issues?
Thanks!
Interesting...
I had a different bug on JG1 fw with SMSes, but it had been solved with upgrade.
I'm guessing you're using stock messaging app and the problem is with stock app only?
Personally I didn't use stock app for a long time, I'm using Handcent and have no such problem.
Have you actually experienced that the message was sent to a wrong person?
Yeah Endgadget did a piece on it in December.

And on the 5th they posted about the fix

I noticed this when I was on 2.1 and using the stock messaging app.... Got me into a bit of trouble once or twice! I thought maybe it was fixed in 2.2, but maybe not... I just don't notice is as I use ChompSMS now, as it's features suit me better.
Hey all,
My girlfriends ohine has been acting up lately. Apparently she is unable to delete messages from her inbox. It will start the process and the screen darkens up with the busy animation going but never completes. It also has been sending out duplicate messages (i received three copies of one message). She has also been complaining that it has been lagging lately. It is bone stock. I havent tinkered with it yet, and am not worried about doing so (running a rooted fascinate with froyo, have succesfully loaded and removed voodoo, etc). Her complaints seem to revolve around the messaging though. It hangs and sometimes freezes when she is compsing text messages, and/or trying to delete messages. Any suggestions on where to start? Not really looking to root if it can be avoided.
did you try restarting the phone?
That was my first suggestion. Internal mem seemed pretty low, had her dump the unnecessary apps and still no luck.
Mmmmm...Froyo!
are you using the built in messaging app or a downloaded one?
Built in. She doesn't use it much outside of the messaging and making phone calls. Nothing too crazy as far as apps go. Just games and the like.
Maybe try handcent or chompSMS.

try that, and also try deleting the messages or threads one at time
I found that deleting huge threads, regardless of the messaging app being used, caused the phone to freeze. Googled the problem and it seems to be a known issue among HTC devices. I ended up installing an app from the market called "delete old messages".
Have her run that at night while she sleeps. Its a bit of a slow process but once it finished deleting about 15-20k texts, I noticed a HUGE improvement in terms of phone response and the lag I was experiencing all but disappeared.
Hope that helps!

I had to do the same thing. I run it at least once a week, deleting at least 500 txt's each time. Great free app.
Had the same problem with HTC Sense. Once I rooted and went to CM, I haven't had any troubles. That's my only suggestion.

It doesn't not freeze it just lags a lot. That happens when like you said- when the thread is big. Apparently smartphone are slow deleting messages. I had a Windows Mobile phone before and it had exactly the same problem. Have ever tried restoring 1500 SMS with a backup app? It takes like half an hour. So it's not a issue, it's just the way the phone works when it comes to SMS
I am getting two notifications for any text message that I recieve...
This is what I have tried...Renaming of conversation.apk to conversaTION.BAK
Freezing messaging 2.2.1 in titanium backup, freezing com.motorola.blur.home.message (by accident I deleted this, but I still get txt messages, will this hurt my mms?), and froze com.motorola.blur.conversations.
I still get text messages from both handcent and what I assume is the messages app built into the droid. The icon is a postcard icon with a stamp on the top right corner.
I've tried to delete handcent and see if that was the issue. No go. Reinstalled and still no go they are still there.
I can clear the message but it comes back everytime that I get a text.
I have disabled ALL notifications in both text message and messages app, and I still get it, from the respective apps (messages AND text messages)
This is where it gets hairy, I would say just to click on it and see where the icon takes you...Problem is that when pressing on the icon from pull down it goes nowhere, and I assume that is because I deleted that blur.hom.messages thing. It also says "you have 0 unread messages". IDK though I have searched through everywhere and tried everything but the right thing.
Any suggestions?
I sbf'ed the x this morning with 2.3.340, and the only thing I have done since that is root, installed apps from titanium, and overclocked via jRunny's app, and of course the above.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Are you using any apps that use a custom LED color? I've found that they usually put an icon in the status bar to do that, and they usually lead nowhere. It could also be another app. Just take a look around your app list and see what you can find.
No LED app...It was driving me nuts, so I decided to sbf again to get the message junk back I deleted. When the pc would not recogonize the droid I wiped and factory reset. I had no sms app and none would go through...I wondered after I got stuck on M if it would have worked if I installed handcent after the reboot???
I kept trying to sbf but no avail. Finally tried to flash a rom I downloaded yesterday I think Liberty 1.5...Ha made me stuck on M. Pulled batt and will wait till I get home to complete a sbf on this dang thing and start all over...I'll post on the text issue I was having to fill you in after the sbf..
Thanks,
BG
Thanks tho
for future reference...The problem was noted to Asurion, they shipped out another phone. I have rooted it and all but no custom roms yet...I have no idea what was causing this and neither does assurion.
I have seen this on my phone. Issue is I don't remember exactly how I fixed it. Do you have any of the following apps installed?

It has thus been resolved as I got a replacement phone from Asurion. So unless there is more need for this thread for others. My issue has been solved and this thread can be closed.
Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm having this same problem, I believe what happening is that both the old froyo messaging icon and the new gingerbread icon are displaying at the same time, I also believe this problem stems from titanium backup after restoring settings after I updated from froyo to gingerbread using an sbf... but I am still unsure, just curious if anyone has a solution?
use root explorer and delete the messaging app you don't want or you can turn off the notifications in the actually app
I too was having this problem when I was on a deodexed pre-rooted version on Gingerbread .605. However, now that I have flashed to Liberty V3 I haven't had that problem at all. I know this isn't much help but I have reinstalled all my previous apps and still don't have the problem.
I guess the title is pretty self explanatory. I'm not rooted and running the latest updates from Tmo. This has been a issue since the first day I bought the phone but I guess now it's getting to me. I've tried the stock messaging app as well as Chomp, Textra and Handcent and it's the same thing. No matter what I'm doing, when I get a text message the phone freezes/lags. I can pretty much predict when I have one coming because of it. This is first phone I can remember having this issue. Old gf of mine used to have the S5 complained of the same thing and this is my first Samsung device in a long time. Wanted to know if it's my phone or just the way TW handles incoming messages.
Doesn't happen on mine.

Isn't there any option like show new message as Popup or extra action for new messages?
Please test Google Messenger App with default setting and also uninstall others and disable the stock messaging app.
let me know if still there is problem.

Yeah that didn't work either. It must be my phone. I don't know what could be wrong that it only happens when I get a text but oh well. On to the S8
