So I am wondering what others opinions are of the roms and kernels available for the SF. Doesn't seem to be much of an improvement on Quadrant scores utilizing another rom or even stupidfast kernels.
Are we just kind of screwed a bit until 2.2? Is there a kernel that is overclocked?
TIA.
Quadrant scores are mostly meaningless, and 2.2 is unlikely to be revolutionary. The phone performs well on 2.1 - keep reading the forum and you'll get there.
In my opinion the biggest performance increases ive seen werent in any benchmarks but in dj05. it runs amazing. If u havent tried it i dont know whether you should or not. With the impending froyo release no one knows if they are actually going to release DJ05 or not. I think they should release it and then put froyo on top of that foundation if at all possible

What do you feel about DJ that helped it out?
I finally stayed with just a Voodoo lag kernel. There certain operations on the phone I had gotten used to that were slow. The kernel with lag fix did show me noticeable improvement, more than just a higher I/O score in Quadrant.
I think the phone is fairly solid on 2.1 but needs a little help. Hopefully the Froyo upgrade really is around the corner but Im not holding my breath

I'm running DJ05 deox, and the stock DJ05 kernel. I used Titanium Backup to remove all the bloatware, and I use ADW instead of TouchWiz crap. (I took TW off with Titanium Backup too). SetCPU to set max to 1ghz, and minimum to 400mhz. (NO PROFILES!!!) It runs just fine for me. Rather damn speedy actually!! I dont do the whole benchmark test business, doesn't really mean much IMO.
Yes benchmarks dont mean too much. But they are a good indication of overall performance in their specific areas that they test. As they fascinate test well in every area except i/o. But we already kne that. Im not sure what about DJ05 Made it feel so solid to me just overall improvement and actual working GPS

Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Ive only tried voodoo/lagfix
It made a significant difference on my phone. I reverted and restored all the factory stuff in anticipation of JD05 because I want to get it OTA when it drops.
I tried to get the leaked one in IRC but people just kept calling me n00b so I gave up.
I am hopeful that it will solve all my woes and usher in a new era of speed only previously dreamt about

@Joe: same setup here (DJ05 deo, Stock Kernel and Rom, Frozen bloat in Titanium) without SetCPU. It's FAST. My GF and both my sons have EVOs running 2.2 and my Fascinate is just as fast (or faster)
@ksizzle: I agree, it's hard to quantify exactly what is so good about it. I think it's not what's there, but what's NOT there (lag) I think there are going to be plenty of happy n00bs when the OTA hits. This phone will be a screamer right out of the box!

Actually, the real performance difference between 2.2. and 2.1 is very revolutionary, though I certainly agree with you about the irrelevance of Quadrant scores. The Java virtual machine, for example, executes code 450% -- that's not a typo -- faster, which directly impacts most apps.
And, 2.2's browser is also significantly faster than 2.1's -- and iOS4's, for that matter.
I like my Fascinate, and yes, I would consider it fast (especially running DJ05 with Geeknik's kernels) but like many others, I too see slowdowns sometimes that just shouldn't happen with the phone's hardware. Froyo isn't a magic pill, per se, but it should significantly reduce or eliminate those slowdowns (as it did on my old Droid 1, despite it's far-slower processor).

Fixed that for ya. Don't let marketing hype get the best of ya.
Everything I've read states that the performance improvements between 2.1 and 2.2 have little effect on Hummingbird processors (which is what is in all Galaxy S phones), and the biggest performance gains are seen on Snapdragon processors. As far as performance goes, I'll believe it when I see it.

Hi, sorry about this lame excuse for OP but apparently I need 10 posts before I post anything on the related forums
Anyway, I'll use this and ask a couple of questions anyway.
I've been using Android on my HD2 since I bought it, first on SD and lately on NAND, in the last flashes my phone appears more sluggish.
Used Desire L from dandiest and while it gets great Quadrant scores (above 2000) it's freaking slow, some Ginger builds I get low scores and phone works faster and smoother, tho I hate it's keyboard.
I've done the task29, that apparently formats the phone, and everything. Radio 2.15, Malgr 1.3
Atm using maesusbuild and still sluggish.
is there anybody out there?
Most Android ROMs for the HD2 have over clocking built into the ROM. Some ROM chefs just provide the overclocking for you and let you decide if you want to overclock. Some ROm chefs have it overclocked already. You have to check to see Wichita is the case with each ROm usually. If the ROM you have sluggish behavior with is not overclockedcalready try slightly overclocking and see if it helps.

if by overclocking you mean messing with SetCpu and increase it's frequency, yep that is weird, for instance, with dandiest Rom I can get the cpu up to 1.5ghz and get 2500 score on quadrant, but playing with it just feels sluggish, on the other hand some ginger roms with 1600 score appear faster.
I know it's weird, maybe an app process killer helps?
Mods please remove this post.
Yes I am talking about SETCPU when I say overclocking. To be honest I have never messed with any testing software to get quadrant scores and the such. But I have read several threads where members get into heated descussions on the reliability of quadrant scores cause as you well know you can get lower quadrant scores than other devices or ROMs but still experience faster and smoother operations than the devices or ROMs with higher quadrant scores. You see as we all know the processor(CPU) is what actually responsible for the speed and smoothness of the operation of the device at its core. But it also depends on how the sofware intractable with the CPU as to the smoothness of operation as well. There for you will get some ROMs that are smooth and fast and some ROMs that are not as smooth and fast. With Android it also has alot Toronto with the kernel too, sometimes changing or modifying the kernel can help with performance. Please don't ask me about how to do this with the kernel though as I am still learning myself. Also yes a good task killer can help some.
sorry, just to get 10 posts

well just to point out. Quadrant is nothing more than a trophy wife. It's only there to show off what may not exist. If it runs smooth, then use it.
Also desire hd and z builds, you can't expect them to run smooth like a gingerbread build, or desire build, it's just like that.
Edit: You can just install another keyboard if you like. A keyboard similar to HTC's own is HTC IME mod. Search it up and you'll find it.

I may try a ginger build and a different keyboard.
Now I'm having a problem, bought a 16gb adata card and last night started getting some errors, took it out and ran h2testw and it worked ok, can it be the rom?
thx for the tip
if I install with CWM can I change the keyboard inside the zip?
Iunno, i'm not familiar with building roms and such. Anyways it doesn't hurt to just install the keyboard after the rom is booted.
For the sd card, try format it will panasonic formatter, full format btw.
my Atrix was flying before i had to send it in for warranty work a few weeks back. (digitizer) Antutu scores around 7000. the rest of the benchmark tests where pretty high also. When it was returned i immediately unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. Now my scores from Antutu are 4500 at best. I am using the exact same rom (Neutrino), and kernel (Faux123) as before. I have tried other roms (cm7 nightlies) reinstalled and full fastboot wipe many times but still the same outcome. The only difference i can see is that i used an different method to unlock the bootloader and root the second time around. Do you think the some of the permission where affected differently the second time around. Am i just overlooking something?

I have heard that refurbished phones USUALLY don't perform as well as the brand new ones do. Here is my example, a refurbished Atrix I read from some users can't even sometimes boot a custom kernel when the custom kernel is around 1.45 to 1.6. For example the one kernel that the dev clemsyn. I saw a FEW mention that when they said they had a refurbished Atrix.

There is a "Boost.sh" script included with Neutrino (I believe in /system/etc) that Notorious recommends be run when you get that "not so fresh" feeling. It is a defrag tool that can be assigned to a widget and should be run every so often.
Also, you will want to see if "Nitrocharger.sh" in the same directory is running as Root at Boot. I have seen big improvements by implementing this.
Both of these scripts came with the ROM, so hopefully you have fast access to them. Good luck to you!
thanks for the info fellow xdaers,,,,,

Actually I had the opposite experience. My original phone wouldn't boot with the clemsyn kernel. My digitizer bombed and I received a refurbished unit from repairs. The new unit runs the clemsyn kernel just fine. So I guess it's just the luck of the draw...

As tob said, those "so verry little script" can makes big differences sometimes
I would like to add my personal toughts, for me, the ROM actually scoring higher and higher and feel a litle bit more freshier each week past within the ROM... so my thoughts would be, the cache partition, the more longer the rom is implemented, the more score you'll get cause the cache slowly become bigger and bigger giving you full power to open something tough!
As for the battery, from my experiences, you can't really judge a battery life while you just flashed a rom, you got to wait until the first week to see if there a big changes between the other ROM you came from ... so my guess would be, those scripts and the longer the ROM is implemented on your phone, the more fast and stable it will get, and you will feel the power slowly coming out again!
My bad if I'm completely wrong, but it is my guess!
Hood luck with your "new" phone
i brought up some old Antutu scores and notice that my ram. cpu integar and floating point scores are extremely low. i have tried multiple kernels but still no change. now i am even more confused......doesn't take much. could it be that my cpu is locked so i can not overclock. it kinda feels like its only utilizing one core.
after weeks of exhaustive searching i finally found a fix that worked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131649
pdsfix.zip
now my antutu scores are back up to around 7000. less lag in app drawer and opening /closing certain app. its back to silky smooth yeehaw.
So I've got some time at the moment to work on the vibrant again, so I figured I'd ask you guys a question.
What are you guys wanting out of the vibrant?
I'm not really one to go for the latest and greatest buzz word feature like "Linaro build" or "optimized build prop," etc.
lengthy posts are encouraged, tell me what you still want out of this device. What do you use it for? What do you want to use it for? Etc.
Like I said, not looking for "gimme 500MB ram" or " an updated 2.3 kernel", I wanna know what user experience your looking for.

Point if the question was missed, it's not about faults. Also there are very talented individuals working on the GPS issues. I cannot test GPS as mine no longer works. I want to know not just for me but also the talented Devs working on the vibrant, what ideas do you guys have for improving the Android experience, just in this case I happen to be gearing it toward the vibrant as I won't be working in anything else myself. That doesn't mean it's faulty, there is always room for improvement.

ECOTOX,
Just in case you do monitor this thread Ill give you a request. Ive built a couple of Froyo ROMs now, and plan to stick with Froyo for some time (at least until the EU error fixed)
That said I usually package the Bali 18.8.UV kernel with them. My favorite Froyo kernel is the DMZ kernel.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/633-kernel2213ghzdragonmodz-nightly3smartassscary8262011140pm/
What set your work apart is the fact it could stepclimp in 100mhz increments. My phone pukes at anything over 1100mhz. Its has the smartass governor (the one I want) that works perfectly. It is smooth, quick, and almost perfect for my needs. Ive only packaged it with one of my ROMs due to the lack to stepclimbing. Here is a request:
Ive tried up to 3 different overclock / volting programs. Tried to set it manually via init script, but the kernel has 2 stock settings: 500mhz / 1000mhz. If I I overclock to 1100mhz I only get three settings: 500/1000/1100. Is there any way you could get a 200mhz in there?
That said your git is available. I don't know how but I guess I could try and build my own based off your source / patches. You kinda sounded like you wanted to help/work some on the T959. With the EU error we have more folks coming back to Froyo every day. Froyo is not dead if I have anything to say about it -

I would be in your debt sir. Thanks for your time.
I just wanted to say thanks for the great work on DMZ, ECOTOX. It has surpassed Overstock as my kernel of choice, but I had one quick question/request. Is it an issue with the kernel or with a particular ROM for some functions to get a little quirky when you start to overclock into the 1.2Ghz range? Whenever I set the CPU ceiling to 1.2Ghz the long press functions on the haptic buttons of the Vibrant would become flakey. I read that's fairly common with overclocking, but was curious who the culprit might be.
Not knowing anything about how scalers/governers can be implemented, what would the chances be to get something like Smartass v2 or a few more options on a new Froyo kernel? I liked messing around with them when I was running Sub-Zero on ICZen to find that happy medium of battery life vs performance.
I say a Galaxy S III themed gingerbread ROM. Anyone?

Ill say motley. I tried trinity kernel. Its good. But I getbetter performance, stability, and battery life with motley. All these battery screen shots really mean nothing. Why? Because none show real heavy use. I can easily get the same stats or better with light to moderate use. Show me some stats showing 8-10+ hrs of screen on time. With some heavy app or game usge. Anyone can use device for a few hours. Then leave it in deep sleep and show the same or better stats.
I've tried all the kernels out so far. They are all good. Its a matter of personal preference of features you want. Some pack things others don't. MOTLEY 'S ATM is the only linaro based kernel. So its using new additions/components. Better optimized. Benchmarks are cool but its real world performance that matters most.
I'm running stock rom with motley latest linaro based kernel with Zram, then CPU overclock @ 1.624ghz and gpu overclock @ 520mhz. I'm also undervolted -75mV across the board. So my temps stay low. Which equates to my device running at a higher performance speed longer.
The best thing about stock rom is I can measly flash different kernels and not have to worry about flashing a rom and setting my apps n all THST all over again. I can flash a kernel with no wipes and be good. Plus stock rom is the most stable ATM. Can't lie though, I am anxious to flash some roms. THST paranoid Android one looks really good. Along with the pure linaro based rom. That's the great thing about choices.
Its not a matter of who has the best kernel. Its more about what you looking for in features and personalizing your device to cater to our needs.
Asking who has the best kernel is like asking who is the best developer on xda. I don't think that's fair to the developers as they ALL work hard on roms or kernels. Forget the popularity contests.
THEY ALL THE BEST lol. Some are just more seasoned than others. Which is OK. I love the fact we have variety of things to choose from. I've been impressed with trinity kernel, based on scores I've been seeing. But I'm also impressed with faux kernel and its a more straight forward one with lots of new Linux commits and additions. All the kernels have a personality of their own. I love the fact that twrp makes it very easy n simple to try out any kernel I want for nexus7. No matter who makes it. Every developer has its followers. You also have people who like to try out different setups.
Choice is a good thing! That's what I love about Android.
I've got to say for me trinity is the best kernel for the Nexus 7, updated daily and great communication with the dev makes this an awesome kernel. The trinity toolbox app is the icing on the cake.

Thing with zram is, its not for getting higher benchmark scores or immediate performance. Its more so for heavy multitasking. Is been proven to help. The placebo is on people who think its supposed to provide some immediate result. If someone is a heavy multitasker on their device, then zram would benefit them. If you not much of a multitasker, then zram will show no Bendix for you.
You are right though, about trying out different kernels and such. Pure aosp rom sounds good. I just hate having to reset up my apps n stuff. I know titanium good for that but me personally, I'm waiting for roms to mature more and have most things, of not everything working. All roms so far seem to have something not working yet. Which is fine. Nature of the beast.
I think I might give trinity kernel another try. I did buy the tkt app. But never used it in conjunction with the kernel. I bought it just for the automatic script it runs..lol plus to show support. I heard tkt app works best with trinity kernel plus allows you to tweak features only in trinity kernel.
Ill download the latest build Trinity has and see what's up. Performance and better battery life is always a good thing. Its gpu is overclocked to 520mhz also?
Trinity HANDS DOWN its been 3 hours on sleep and ITS still at 100%! + the ridiculous speed along with the power saving features. I may be new to the Nexus 7 scene but this is hands down to godly .

im not sure if gpus oc...but when u underclock..theres absolutely no performance difference..and saves battery too! 102mhz-1100mhz on demand/deadline..god like battery life. 4 hours screen time...still 45% left...shouldve been more if i didnt flash roms in between battery life. also under clocked, gta 3 and cs portable runs great and smooth still.
thanks to simms, I tried out trinity again. I flashed the latest builds. ran some benchmarks. for some reason, my device doesn't like the highest speed on benchmarks. it kept rebooting during them. so I stayed at 1.5ghz. governor I used was performance and on demand. for scheduler I ran with deadline. i forced cpu online and put fysnc on faster, thanks to TKT app. on quadrant, I was more concerned with seeing if I could achieve those crazy high I/O scores. which I did. my overall score was good but I've gotten higher on motley. it could be higher on this kernel if I get the 1.6ghz+ speed to stick. I was more impressed with my rl sqlite benchmark test. scored 18 seconds overall. which blows away the competition.
so I'm impressed with latest version of kernel. definitely better than the older build I ran of it from before. some things I've noticed though. where is the ability to undervolt at? no option in tkt app and the voltages tab disappeared from system tuner. also, this build gpu isn't overclocked. or might be better for me to say its definitely not running at 520mhz. I could tell this by the fps from quadrant. its running 59-60fps. on motley with 520mhz gpu I get 70-80+fps. just some things I noticed. not necessarily drawbacks. kernel runs very good. just got to figure how to make higher speed stick. since I can't seem to adjust voltages on this build, I can't increase voltage or undervolt it. if this can be done on trinity kernel, let me know how. its not showing voltages in tkt app or system tuner.
overall very good kernel. will run it for a while to see how battery life is. I will likely underclock it like above poster mentioned for best battery life. I noticed nexus 7 still runs great underclocked. no lag.,no matter what kernel I'm using.
I've attached screenshots of my benches on latest trinity overclocked @ 1.5ghz. I know my device can take 1.6ghz cuz on motley I can run the speed fine, even through benches. so have to see why its not taking on trinity kernel. maybe voltage needs to be increased.
so it doesnt matter if trinity is still in experimental? its that good? i guess ill try that one out

there are more features that are going to be added, theyre being added all the time. ask gnex owners how the options grew(same app btw, different devices running trinity see different features in the app. so you purchase it once, and use it on multi devices. btw, voltage adjustment will be added, remember how new development is on the n7. also, if other developers added the options into their kernels, theyed be able to use those features with their kernels

thats just trinitys method of rotating the kernels.. starts off in experimental(every kernel is tested to boot and run before it every appears here), then it graduates to prerelease if it makes the cut, and then if you guys like it it makes its way to release. its just that trinity development is so new here that there isnt a prerelease yet

I've underclocked mines to 1.1ghz also. battery doesn't want to budge from 100% so far..lol. it's barley sipping battery. the UI and browser is fluid n smooth at this underclock. which is a good thing. the real test will come once I play nova3 shortly. if it plays lag free on this lower speed then underclocking is a winner. I set my governor to interactive though. you get better battery life than ondemand. using deadline also. with fsync set to faster.

I understand nexus 7 is still infancy, developement wise. its cool. just wondering if those features were included since the option disappeared. I could undervolt or increase voltage on motley kernel. the tkt app would let me do it on THST kernel as the section shows for it. but I like using system tuner for undervolting when I was on motleys kernel. can't wait to see what new features get added. plus once I get my new phone, hopefully there'll be a trinity kernel out for it so I can use tkt app with it. the build is very good.

Interesting, 70-80fps, more than the panel.
You were interested in battery in an earlier post, this is me feeling meh and couching most of Sunday.
EDIT: Yes, emailing, tapatalk, browsing for laptop and not finding any, reading news in Pulse and flipboard, tweetcaster and testing slice(s?), gtalk, not heavy usage obviously. Screen wasn't on unless The Seven was used though.
