Wifi won't stay on...help! - Vibrant General

So I saw a poster earlier who had their wifi turning off. They said they just went through data > wifi and deleted a file. However, I can't find a folder called wifi in my data folder on the phone. I even checked site hidden files. Is this something that'll only show if I browse through the computer?
Please help!

Going to USA...how do I force disable Data?

I am going to the USA later this week and don't want to get stung with huge data roaming charges. Is there any way to force data to stay off, with an option to use wifi if needed? I used to use a program on my windows mobile called NODATA...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this:
1. Type *#*#4636#*#* on your dial pad
2. Select "Phone Information"
3. Press "Menu" soft key
4. Select "More"
5. Select "Disable Data on Boot"
6. Reboot
Now data should be disabled (you won't see E/3G icons in the notification bar) and you can use WiFi whenever you want.
you can use my app "data on demand" for that (in the market). i would also recommend turning settings->wireless and network->mobile networks->data roaming OFF! this always worked for me!
I was just going to post the same thing...
Don't anybof the standard system settings provide the functionality to do the same? e.g. limit to 2g only and/or turning off data updates and/or data roaming etc. ?
Will check the app out though... If you do the keypad option, how do you then reenable or does it just come back on with a reboot meaning you have to do it each time you turn the phone on...?

Setting 2G only wouldn't stop data use, only high-speed data (though that would curtail the rate at which you can accumulate it). There is a setting to not use data while roaming, which should work, though entering incorrect data in the APN settings as I think these programs do would work too.

Settings->Wireless and Network->Mobile Networks->Uncheck Data roaming
That will disable any data use on networks other than your home-network! No other settings/configs are necessary!

Good. That's what I was hoping for/assumed it may do.
this topic should be stickied
Install APNdroid. You can place a widget on the homescreen to turn on, off APNs:

Thanks guys, much appreciated!

I was wondering this also as i am due to go away, but i still want to send and receive MMS (as it is included in my allowance) whilst away. So the question is, if i choose not to have data whilst roaming will this also stop MMS as this is also data? I have a suspicion that it would, so, would the only other option be to just put some bogus APN settings in for internet but keep my MMS settings as it should be? Any ideas? Thanks a lot.
Don't know why people are going into this vast overkill....
Just go into your settings, wireless networks, ensure "Enable data while roaming" is unchecked. In fact, it will be unchecked by default, at least in the Bell rom.
This setting works perfectly (I just went to the US this past weekend), so i see no reason to screw around with the APN or reboot the phone or install other hacky apps. If this box is unchecked the instant you switch to roaming your data is disabled.

Internet Problem

I was running bubby's aosp rom then i started to have an internet problem( I tried both 3G and WiFi) and when i use an app that needs internet connection(ESPN Scorecenter, Market, Dolphin Browser, Facebook) it won't work and i would get an internet connection error. After I Started having problems i flashed backed to stock to see if it would work, it didn't. Now i am on Jt Super Clean Rom and still doesn't work
Can someone please help?
anyone please?
? Can Anybody Please help me
Try dialing *228 then option 1. If that doesn't work then try a factory data reset from settings. There may be other options but those are the two I know.

Wipe data and cache. Should take care of it. From clockwork recovery if u have it

no dice it didnt work and i am not factory rest data because i did that alreadt any other suggestions?
Do you live in a former alltel area? I do & I was having similar problems with email apps. Vz tech support had me do *22899 and then change my mobile data setting from automatic a to automatic b in the wireless & network settings menu. This option is only listed in former alltel areas though.

Ya I think so i went on the altlel website to check an it said
"Alltel is now a part of Verizon Wireless in your market, creating America's Largest Mobile to Mobile Calling Family — over 80 Million Strong! We'd like to invite you to shop verizonwireless.com and explore the full lineup of products and services we have available."
ok so i have flashed back to stock everything via odin and i still get problems and idea's?
You could try going to automatic b. As I understand it, it allows use of alltel AND vz towers & sets their priority as well. You get to it from menu>settings>wireless & networks>mobile data>system select.

All I have is home and automatic. Am I missing something?
i fixed my problem i flashed the stock recovery,system,and kernal in odin and then did factory rest via privacy settings and then it worked

Nope, the automatic b setting is only on phones that are in former alltel areas from what I was told.

Nexus s decided today was good to lose data

My nexus s lost data connection today and it won't turn back on. Even after reset. Anyone else had this?

Maybe check if something's happened to the APN settings / if they have been disabled?
Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Network Settings
What am I looking for? I havent changed anything?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Sounds like a network issue, you need to call your carrier.

well .. if your phone didn't need any additional configuration for APN during your very first use, then I guess, as princeasi just mentioned, you might have to check with your network operator for help..
the reason why i told tht you might have to define the APN settings is because, for me, I had to manually add the APN, username /password in order to get access to my carrier's data network ...
maybe you could browsing on this link: http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Carrier_APN_Settings#Italian_Networks
for APN settings..
that link is meant to help configure iPhone APN settings (Android has a lot more parameters to define) .. but the details shud still work with your NexS
(for eg. all settings for my carrier were the same as what were already on my phone by default.. the only thing i had to configure manually was the u/name, password and APN name)
Hope that helps...
I let it auto reconfigure everything and it came back .. not sure what happened

data network problem....help needed urgently

i am not being able to use the internet on my phone.when i activate the data network nothing happens.PACKET DATA (in settings>wireless>mobile network) always gets unclicked.when i click packet data to activate after sometime it gets unclicked automatically.i have tried 2 service provider connec same prob,installed stock rom,custom(indroid,lestatious,kyrillos) nothing happened.plz HELP.....
Did you use some of the APN on-off widget or apps (APNDroid or Elixir)?. I had the same problem, until I checked APNs in Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names > "your default APN" (usually first one) > APN. Check if the APN name ends in either elixir or apndroid, and delete those.
no i havent used ny apn widget.i was surfing net,and suddenly this thing happened.
If your battery is miscalibrated, and phone thinks it's low, it will disable packet data. Charge your phone to 100% and use BatteryCalibration from market to calibrate it. Then see if you can enable packet data.
Or you can just get the worldwide apn list xml and throw it in your phone...and then restore defaults in the apn list. Worked for me when I flashed a new rom and lost my apn settings.
Here's how to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=951214
This is netwrk provider problem..i think...coz same happens 2-3times with me too..but after some times means one or two hours its ok ...or I think you are using proxy in Apn that could be the problem too...

Hmmh... that is weird. You have rooted and made sure you have RW permissions?
i have my ph rooted..how to have r/w permission????when i open my root explorer on the top it shows "mount as r/w"
What's the name of your provider? Vodafone? Google "Vodafone apn settings india" and see if you get any results, then go to 'Access point names' (same place where everything else related to data networking is) and then press on your menu key (left of your home button) and add an APN. Now use the settings you found from google and type them into the correct fields.
i was using internet through vodafone nd suddenly this thing happened.i had created apn again nd again but nothing helped.
Odd. Go to dial pad and type *#06# to check your IMEI. Do you see zero's or actual numbers? (Whatever you see, don't post the number here)
Also, are you sure flight mode is not on? Can you use someone else's sim card to check if packet data works then?
yes my IMEI no is showing.i have tried another sim,same prob,tried stock rom same prob,,,,very unusual prob..
plz guys help me on this..i am in deep ****....
Odd.. try posting this topic to some general forum instead of our I5800 one. You'll get more publicity and answers hopefully

Yes, that is it. Click it to gain R/W permissions, then try to paste the file in the right place.
Sorry it took so long to answer. Was at a craaazy wedding.
i did the thing,paste the apn file to /etc
inside apn done reset to default.
BUT STILL THE PACKET DATA gets unclicked even after clicking.
this problem is very unusual,nd happened only to me i guess.....
Similar problem...cant get GPRS/3g to work in a custom rom... even tried copying the apn.conf file but got no positive results...
i guess it's because of the other region's firmware ...any help would b highly appreciated !!
i cannot access internet from custom rom as well as stock rom.i was surfing the net nd suddenly this thing went off,and that problem continued...

[discovery] maximum of first 200 saved wifi networks in wpa_supplicant.conf is shown

Strange issue led me to coclusion that in wpa_supplicant.conf only firts 200 networks are show in network list in wifi settings.
I am on HTC Sesnation, with new firmware 3.12.XXX android ICS ARHD 6.0.3 with moded kernel to overclock device. All is working quite good. I found strange thing that when I am at home or in my favorite caffe I have to type passwords when ever I shut down phone. So I have to investigate this.
First I found wpa_supplicant.conf location /data/mics/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf , when I pull it to PC it was in plain text:
ctrl_interface=wlan0
update_config=1
device_type=0-00000000-0
network={
ssid="Buxxxr-Test"
psk="zarko123"
priority=12
}
network={
ssid="BxxxBar"
psk="88888888"
priority=13
}
network={
ssid="UNIxx"
psk="unico8448"
priority=758
}
network={
ssid="LUxx"
psk="752512mc"
priority=27
}
...
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
then I do search for my home network name ... I found it about 10 matching network sets all with same password still my phone is not connecting automatically to my home network. Also with caffe wifi network name.
Since this is started 10 days ago when I changed router at home , and deleted my home network manually from settings BUT ALSO favorite caffe wifi settings[by accident - similar name] on same day.
So what I found out is what ever I do with wpa_supplicant.conf network is not auto connect. I trimmed all but one duplicated items. Checked for duplicated priority settings ... Nothing helps then I noticed few new networks form yesterday in last few rows... I checked and they don't show ether in wifi settings. HM ... I have bunch of networks, my work is relaying on internet and wifi and also I am setting up a lot of wifi networks so i have many of those remembered in phone. So i have around 20 networks saved earlier with router default "TP_Link****" ssid names... I deleted them manually from wpa_supplicant.conf and after pushing to phone - success some of my missing networks are shown, but still missing few. So I removed another not important ssid stings from wpa_supplicant.conf and after push another network is shown in wifi settings. And my phone is automatically connected to my home network
So I count them out. tHERE IS 209 network settings in wpa_supplicant.conf and only first 200 is shown.
So that is my conclusion - MAX 200 networks shown in wifi settings.
Question is is this ROM related, Firmware related, Phone specific or ICS problem. Please investigate and post back results.
Cheers to all.
What is unbelievable, the passwords stored in the file are readable ! So if someone hack or steal your android device, he can get them all...

Interesting conclusion, not sure where the limit is set (possibly the settings app?).
Just to note, yes the passwords and settings are in plain text for wifi but they need elevated access to read them (ie, root).
You can check ... but it is in plain text and i got it over 200
I checked and double checked and it is true...
Can some one else confirm ?
So HTC now gona fix this security issue as we seen in past few days in debate about wifi security issue.

This isn't and HTC issue. I just checked my Asus Transformer and its exactly the same. However, this saved my ass, as my Rezound would not sync my networks like the Transformer did, so now I can just manually sync them by copying this file over to the phone! Thanks!
