Building an android rom - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Ok so I am in the process of building my own android rom. I have built the system.ext2 file using nexus one 2.16.17001 base image. I then ran the build on my HD2 was able to get it to fully boot!
It seems to run really fast, but my first issue is I can not get network to connect, it simply does not recognise the sim card.
I know there are drivers I need to download and update the build with but I am unsure what I need to download and were to get them from.
If anybody could help me it would be great. I am very close to getting a working build!

Can anybody help with this?

I've been trying to figure this out myself. I'm still working on it. I was able to get in the new radio - FRG33 built into the ROM, but that's about it so far.
Can you do me a huge favor? Don't suppose you can tell me - in a PM or otherwise - what steps you took to get it to boot as far as you did? I think if I can fiddle around with that I might be able to get the rest working.
Thanks!

Hatelfy I have sent you a PM as requested.
As Hatelfy suggests I think I need to extract the radio.img file and add the contents into my rom but I cant figure out how to extract the file. Does anybody have any ides?
I have tried mounting the file in ubuntu but it simply does not recognise the file type.

Don't know if it'd work but could you not use something like iso buster and extract raw data? Saying that I searched the other day "nbh extract" and there's a program on here somewhere that'll dump the contents into a folder if that's what you're after!?!?

Im not even sure if im on the right track. Everything on my build is working perfectly. Except the data. I cant get it to see the sim card. I am not sure what I have to update to get it to go on to the network.
Any ides?

OK, well how I did it was like this. Not sure if it's the right way of doing it, but the system didn't error and was perfectly happy doing it sooo..
Using a standard Android kitchen, I just downloaded the contents of the FRG33 Radio rom into the root of my working folder. After I was done tinkering with various aspects of my ROM I gave it the command to build from the working folder.
I guess what it does is looks for a radio from root and it incorporates everything on fly. (at least that's what the status messages said it did...)
Once I had my custom rom built I used Coffeeshop to make the system image. After that, I had no idea. I'm not even sure if I was supposed to incorporate anything to the build or not module wise.
When I get back home from work today i'll try out the info you gave me and get back to you and let you know if worked or not.

Hey man Can you PM me on what kitchen you used? I only know of the coffee shop?

Yep sure thing.

Is it possible to run Cyanogen 4.2.6 on the SDK Emulator?

Is there a good way to get the current version of Cyanogen up and running on the SDK emulator? I have several people that complain about my application widget closing when they open or close the keyboard. The logs show nothing pertaining to my application and the only thing they all have in common is a stock G1 with Cyanogen 4.2.6 and no home screen manager. Many others with non-modded G1's do not have this problem.
I'd like to test it out in the emulator since I now only have a Droid
I found some instructions with an image file to use for this, but it was for a very old version of Cyanogen.
do a nandroid backup and then copy the files from it in to the directory of a virtual device you have already created
then all shall be good
Is there a good source to snag a existing nandroid backup of 4.2.6? I don't have a G1 or any other device to run a nandroid backup on. Too bad too cause I just shipped out my old HTC Magic a few days ago. Now all I have is my Droid.
I'll search around for one and report back if I locate one.
just did a dump for you
http://code.google.com/p/cyanogen-updater/downloads/list
itl be up in a few minutes
You just need to make a yaffs2 image of the /system folder from cyan's update.zip. The boot.img is already in the zip.
Search for mkfs.yaffs2.
That nandroid backup works perfectly in my AVD 1.6 emulator. Thanks so much for building that for me. I can test all my apps against Cyan now
Thanks goldenarmz too, I'll save this away for future versions. Does this work with Hero roms as well?

Yes, you can run anything on the emulator like that
I also found out that trick a few days ago. The only problem I have is that I do not get an Internet connection.
Does the SDK simulate wifi, 3G or is there just another fictive network device? I've got DroidWall and Y5 installed. Furthermore I've got sometimes problems to start my wifi after rebooting (problem by manual copied wpa_...cfg, I guess).
I am not really sure where to search. I will investigate the stuff in the paragraph above but perhaps you've got another few hints for me?
btw: I've got 4.2.13, but that shouldnt make a big difference, should it?
Anybody has found a fix for internet Issue for Cyanogen system.img file and Android SDK emulator?
Regards,
Oscar.

sorry if this sounds dumb, but i have been away from XDA for quite a few months now.
so you are talking about a very flashable android ROM for the vogue? meaning kiss bye bye winmo? everything works? even MMS and camera?
MMS depends on your carrier i have sprint and i can receive via picture mail(web view) but i cannot send. Everything else works YES kiss winmo goodbye i have

short answer, no it needs to work in win mo first. back to the drawing board. first you need to unlock your phone with an unlocker, then you need to flash an official rom preferrably from your carrier that is GPS enabled, then you can run android and use GPS on it. many tuts around. if you did all of this already, you didn't do it right. also, some programs in win mo require GPS to be primed before working. make sure to use something like google maps to test in win mo.
I'm curious. What's so great about Android on the phone?
I'm using Windows Mobile 6.1 and the phone seems to run fine.
Are there clear cut advantages or is it just "something different"?

to me the interface is superior, the apps, but mostly it's just something cool.
functionality wise I think you can achieve the same thing on Windows mobile with the right apps. Just the cool stuff like oooooo are not there on Winmo

Run Android from your sd card via haret. Then you can have winmo and android.
im having issues, I have the original 512mb card in the phone formatted twice with fat32 partition. Copied the 6 files from your zip file and flashed the nbh file via the windows ruu flasher all was good. Boots with the linux penguin but I get to the state where it says losetup: /dev/block/loop0: No Such file or directory Failed
Failed to mount data fs on SD Card.
/bin/sh1 can't access ttyl job control turned off.
Then it just sits there.
Help, I'm playing around with this on my partially broken vogue (have my good one running winmo) so I can fool around with it but I've tried everything I could.
Thanks
Have try it on my Kaiser... I know for sure it will not work.. and indeed... loop between reset and the HTC logo
is this different than the one dzo made?
my mistake i made the zip file really quick last night i will redo it. Apparent i didnt rename datablank.img to data.img i will fix and reupload but all you have to do is make sure the file is data.img
The link in the first post has been updated to reflect this change. My apologies.

If that is only the difference then we can rename it itself if you already have the files.
Question: Can you also replace the system.sqsh with a build you like?
(When you know for sure it is working.. beside if GPS/Bluetooth is working.)
And in the ROM there is: zimage, initrd and haret.exe?
the flash will not work on a Kaiser have try the new ZIP file.
I flashed this rom and it was very nice, but when i tried to sync my google account, it force closed and my contacts never synced. Is there a fix to this?
Can someone also make a Flashable rom for KAISER ... thanks..

Try scanning the card for errors. Aslo note that the data file needs to be named data.img. Between those 2 ideas you problem should be solved.

Even running natively instead of haret i have noticed battery life really sucks and i'm just talking about standby mode. Using the same programs on android as winmo i get about a third of the battery life. Can anyone recommend any battery saving tip. GPS is on only when needed and data is always on. I will not turn data off as it is always on in winmo and i have no issues with winmo.

Android build?

I'm looking to try out an android build. Can someone recommend a build to use that's easy to set up. I need data, and gps to work. Also would I be able to flash back to WM if I don't like the build?
Not sure of an Android build to meet your needs, though I would like it too!
To flash back to WM is easy once I did a lot of reading. Just power your phone off, then turn power on with the camera button depressed too. This brings up the bootloader screen, then just flash your favourite WM ROM.

Hi ski21,
I was in your shoes just a few weeks ago. I now have a great Android build running on my Touch (Bell Mobility). Everything works and it “feels” like a native build like it was meant for this device.
With any of the Android builds you can always flash back to Windows Mobile. You just need to make sure you have an up-to-date (ie. GPS enabled) Windows Mobile ROM to return to. I am with Bell and use the most recent official Bell update so I can go back to a “supported” configuration.
If you have never flashed a custom Windows ROM before then you will need to install the “HardSPL” provided by ImCoKeMaN. This is an alternate boot loader that allows you to flash unsigned (non-official) ROMs. This is really the key to doing anything cool with your Vogue. Without this you can only every install an official ROM released by your carrier. I recommend version 2.31. If you have installed a custom Windows ROM before then you have already done this. You can find the information on this over at PPCGeeks in the link below:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370
Once you have the CoKe SPL 2.31 installed you will be able to flash any custom ROMs including Android builds. Flashing Android is a little different then flashing Windows ROMs. You will need a bunch of files:
First things first, you will need a copy of the ROMUpdateUtility. This is a Windows program that you use for flashing your Vogue. You can get this here:
http://cid-e5302e6abd554cb9.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/XDA/ROMUpdateUtility.rar
Download and unpack this into a folder called ROMUpdateUtility.
Next you will need a Linux kernel with a screen size (resolution) appropriate for your device. This is the one I am using and it works great in conjunction with the ROM I am going to suggest next.
http://it029000.massey.ac.nz/vogue/files/voguimg-240x320-17-12-09.nbh
Download this file, copy it to the folder you unpacked the ROMUpdateUtility in. Rename it to RUU_signed.nbh.
Next you will need to download some “base files” as well as a system image (which is the main ROM). You copy these files to the SD card on the Vogue. You can get the “base files” here:
http://cid-e5302e6abd554cb9.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/XDA/Androidstuff.rar
You will then need to select your favorite Android build. I am using plemen's “Eclair themed” build. You can get this here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591104
Rename the system file you download to system.sqsh when you copy it to your SD card. Also download the data.img file and place it on your SD card (should be provided in the thread that you get the build itself from). In the “end” (just before you flash) you should have the following files sitting in the root of your SD card:
datafstonand
rootfstonand
systemfstonand
rootfs.img
data.img
system.sqsh (or system.img depending on the build you download)
Then you put your Vogue into boot loader mode. You do this by holding down the power & camera buttons and pressing the reset button with the stylus. Then run the ROMUpdateUtility.exe from your ROMUpdateUtility folder.
That just about covers it I think. I am a little unclear what all these different parts do but this should get Android 1.6 (if you download plemen's build) up and running on your Vogue. Enjoy.
Best regards,
The Fish
Excellent directions, thank you. I followed them but it comes up as T-Mobile when it loaded Android. I think I messed up the rootfs.img, this i got from the http://sourceforge.net/projects/androidhtc/files/ plemen's “Eclair themed” build page. Any idea where I went wrong, for I am also a Bell user.

that's normal
Well if it's normal then there's a problem. It will not let me connect, shows 2 bars, but says I have no network so I cannot connect to Google. If thefish123 is connected on Bell then I must have something wrong. I followed the directions exactly, but was somewhat unsure over the rootfs.img file for it is not too specific in the directions??? Anyway, flashed back again to NSFans. I have had another Android working but could not get tethering working correctly, I was hoping this one might do it. Using PDnet it just wouldn't work for me.
Also, sorry ski21, wasn't my intention to hijack your thread.

Hi krwilson,
It is indeed normal for plemen's build to show T-Mobile. It was most likely extracted from a T-Mobile device at some point. However when you drag the notification area down from the top of the screen it should show Bell Mobility. Just slide your finger from the top of the screen down as if dragging the top bar down.
I also did not have data immediately after flashing plemen's build. I did a soft reset and then it worked perfectly. Regarding the rootfs.img... I downloaded the rootfs.img mentioned a little further into the same thread that mentions an update to get GPS working under Android.
If it shows that you have reception the first thing to try is calling *BELL and see if you get the “your test call was successful” message. If so then you are on the network.
The next thing is a data issue. I would suggest poking your stylus in the reset hole and rebooting. That solved it for me.
Also, I had issues with missing calls on some Android builds (most notably the cupcake 1.5 build). My phone would not ring till 3 or 4 rings on the other end and then very quickly go to voice mail. These issues have disappeared using plemen's “ 1.6 build.
I have everything working except perhaps maybe Bluetooth (not sure I don't really use it). The phone works fine as a phone (calls come through), GPS and data all work. I am very pleased with it.
Best regards,
The Fish
Thank you for the followup.................IT WORKS beautifully! I have not tested BlueTooth yet, no big deal to me either, but it tethers and it does work seamlessly, and fast...........as if it was made for our Vogues.

What application are you using to tether your Vogue?
PdaNet 2.16

how do I push the car dock from one ROM to another?

I want to take the cardock.apk from one ROM and use it on another. Both are 2.1 flavors, so I thought it would be as easy as taking the apk from one and pushing it to another. It worked for a little while but then it stopped working. I got an error about permissions. When I ran fix_permissions, it disapeared.
lil help?

I would suggest taking the rom with the cardock.apk and running it in android rom kitchen . You can find a video at TheUnlockr showing you how to set it up and create your own rom. What you'll want to do in essence is un-compiled that rom and remove the apk and drop it into the rom you want (which will also be un-compiled ) once thats done just recompile the new rom with your apk in it and sign it, and flash it too your phone. Of course make sure you Nand backup first just incase something doesnt go right.

(Q) Dualbooting Help

Hi, I am quite new to the HD2, so I have a question that might sound dumb to the more experienced people reading this.
Is it possible to Dualboot WP7 and Android ? But it is not that simple, I want my phone to boot into android unless I choose WP7 instead, I currently have Android ICS on my nand so what I need is something like the SD method used to dualboot WM6.5 and Android, but the other way around and with WP7 instead of WM6.5
Thanks.
Seems like even if I wanted to singleboot WP7, I cannot, because I cannot even get a rom, all the links are broken, If any on you have a WP7.8 with all the good stuff and tweeks I probably want, please link it.
Hi Traysa, you can only boot wp7 from nand using magldr. magldr lets you choose which OS autostarts in bootsettings. So you would need to partition your sdcard and use an SD android build, or better, a NativeSd ROM.
Shame the links are down, have you checked the last few pages of the threads for re-upped links? What wp7 takes your fancy? I might have it on HDD.
Off to sleep now, night night.
Oh, and you will need an activation code for wp7, don't think Microsoft give them out now as wp7 is unsupported.
Yes, I did look for reups for about an hour, found none, I would like a WP7 rom that has lots of preinstalled apps, because WP7 is no longer supported and getting them might not be very easy. dont really care if its Mango or WP7.8, I just want it to work. And about the WP7 activation key, how would I go about getting one ?
Thanks
edit: Forgot to add, I dont want to install wm6.5, i want to go straight from android to WP7, if at all possible.
The one you say you have ( WP7.8 pdaimatejam v8.8) should work, please mail it, or link it if you still have it.
Oh and pdaimatejam put this code out, it supposedly should work TP4CF-GK479-Q9Q4Q-WPYRP-7YR4D
heres another : CRFV7-X32H9-7QF2Y-CG239-V62YR
Off to work, will look later
After a **** ton of digging, I found a Hd2O ROM from a Dutch website, will try it.
No need for the rom anymore, the rom I found is working great, is it still possible to use the market ? When I try to make an account, it gives me a connection error, what do I do about that ? Also, I didn't use the key like you said, it never asked me to use a key.
Turns out I actually need a code, the two I found dont work. How do I get one ?
Okay, so WP7 is working perfectly, but I want Android too, how do I do that ?
I like either something cool like FroYo, I need an SD rom right ? Heres one,but the link is down ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870518 ) I already have a few things on my wp7 installation, so I do NOT want to delete it all, so I will probably need to back it up, but 1. Will it work if I partition the SD card 2. will it even work with zune down ? If you have this rom, please post it

Hi again Traysa, sorry been really busy in RL lately and haven't had a chance to get on xda. How are you getting on?
I posted a working link at the end of the thread you quoted for the Froyo build, but it would still be too big to install on sdcard without re-partitioning. I am pretty sure that you would lose your stuff if you repartitioned.
But see this post https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41706158 for a way to boot android without repartitioning, it is also superRAM as the original froyo build, and works well as long as you have only a few apps.
Thank you, but I cannot get the ROM, because it was uploaded on DevHost, which I guess does not work any longer, if you still have the rom, would you put it on mediafire or send it as an attachment ? It is kinda sad, that so many HD2 ROMs got lost this way. I am also really surprised that you were able to get android on such a tiny amount of space.
Best regards
Traysa

Hi, this build is soo close to booting, but when I go to Ad SD and launch it, Portadroid starts porting is and then it reboots, any ideas ?
I also have an unrelated question, I recently started experimenting with the CM13 build for the HD2, but I cannot figure out, how to get files onit, when I plug it in, it shows that its an MP3 Player and I cannot put any files on it, when I put the SD card in my PC directly,I quickly figure out that Windows is not Linux and does not understand EXT4. Because the browser/the play store does not work, I cannot put any apps on it, so that its usable, I wanna put a veeeery lightweight web browser on it and aptoide, it that works.
PS : Thank you for helping me, it always makes my day !
EDIT : I figured the file transfer out, I had to switch to PTP in settings instead of MTP.
