[Q] New to gsm androids - myTouch 3G, Magic General

I've got a droidx and an evo. Recently, got a hold of a t-mobile mytouch and had numerous problems when I first got it. I'm not used to gsm's at all. All having to do with not having a t-mobile sim. I'm not complaining I finally activated it with a tmobile employees sim.
My question is: after I root, and flash a custom rom, is the activation screen going to be a problem since I don't have a tmobile sim and will only be using this as one of my various dev phones. If the activation screen is going to be a problem, is it possible to modify the system files on this tmobile my touch, so as to not have this activation screen lock the phone, sort of like the nexus one bypass or are there n e sapphire roms with this sort of bypass built into it already. .
Ive been researching this for awhile and i found something for a G1, but I don't know if the method will work. I have knowledge of adb use. If this has already been posted somewhere then whoops, could anyone point me in the right direction.

I think most custom ROMs let you either bypass the activation or let you use wiring to activate. I know for sure that the Cyanogen builds and ROMs based of their mod will let you use with to login with Google. Alternatively, if you don't needs access to market or any market apps you could opt not to install the Google Apps add-on and you wont be prompted at all.

Downgraded working G1 to RC29 and can't access Google servers now

I have a T-Mobile US account with unlimited internet access. Currently I am using an HTC Touch Pro2. However, my buddy gave me his G1 to root and sell for him.
I installed RC29 and rebooted the phone. I put my sim card into the G1 so that I could get to the home screen and then begin the process of rooting the phone (i.e. download a telnet client, etc.). Problem is, I get to the Google login screen and it won't connect to the server. I've waited several hours and tried again, thinking maybe the server was down, but still have had no luck. Does anyone know why this would be? Is there another route that I can take (maybe putting a different version on the phone before rooting)?
I could really use the help of some knowledgeable person here.
Bob C.
NOTE: When I'm at the sign-in screen, I can touch the Menu button and get the APN Settings. I noticed one of them is for T-Mobile US, I just don't know what I need to put in each of the fields (if that even will help).
Also, prior to doing the downgrade, the G1 connected to the Google servers fine.
The actual message that I'm getting is, "There is a problem communicating with the Google servers".
I'm at a loss what to do.
i had some issues down grading to rc 29 i few weeks ago i updated to 1.5 and then used the one click root app. and also i was using my gfs old sidekick and data would go in and out all the time and keep getting odd text messages. so maybe ask for friend for his sim and see if that helps.

Is there another version other than rc29 that I can put on my micro sd card and then put it on the phone? It's only since downgrading to rc29 that I have no ability to get past the Google login screen. My sim card, that I am using in the G1, has an unlimited data plan.
I know that unless the phone has root I cannot flash different rom versions on it, but is there a dreaming.nbh file that I can put on the sd card that may provide me with the ability to connect to the Google servers once I install it on the phone (holding in the camera and power button)?
I would give you the link but i am on my phone at work. Search for jesusfreke's thread on how to activate a phone without a data plan. You can use that method to skip the activation screen.
Almost every time I've rooted a phone I've had issues connecting to Google servers. Keep trying. Its taken me 5 or more tries in the past.

I tried over 10 times and even reinstalled rc29. Nothing seems to help.
I also installed the SDK and when I try to start ADB Shell the device isn't found. I think that's because I'm stuck at the signin screen but don't know for sure.
It signed onto the Google server and internet with no problem until I copied the rc29 dreaming.nbh file to the root of the sd card and started the phone via camera/power. It all updates correctly, just can't connect.
It's weird because I used to own a G1 and did the rc29 install and rooted the phone, partitioned the SD card, etc. I have no idea why I'm having such a problem connecting to the Google server.
Any other suggestions?
If no devices pops for adb, then you need to make sure adb is installed correctly.

sorry for the quick information. and you can flash official roms you might want to try updating to 1.5 here is the link http://www.mediafire.com/?zmdyjz3y2zn idk but rc29 was giving me strange issue the last time i had it on my phone so try to avoid it as much as possible now.lol but of you get data on 1.5 download the one click root app and flash cm stable and put cm update on his phone so the next person who gets wont have to worry too much about this root stuff.
i am more than glad to give all the limited knowledge i have but i dont see any advantage of rooting a phone before you sell it just saying. thanks i hope this helps

Okay, I was able to flash 1.5 but I'm still unable to sign-in to the google servers. When I look at the APN settings there is no proxy set, no port set, no mms proxy or port set. I've been searching the forums for T-Mobile U.S. apn settings but can't find them anywhere. Any idea where I can find these. I figure that may be my problem.
Thanks again!
T-Mobile Technical Support's Comments
I have a question about not being able to get connected to Google servers. I still have been trying and trying to signin to my Google account on the G1 that my buddy gave me to sell. I currently have an HTC T-Mobile Touch Pro2 and have been trying to use my sim card in the G1. I phoned technical support today and they guy said that I can't connect because (even though I have an unlimited internet account) my account is setup for the TP2 internet package and not the Google/Android pacakge.
Does it really make a difference? If so, this could be what's causing my problem.

cant get past the set up screen

so i upgraded to the hd2 which means i had to change my plan..well i would like to use my g1 from time to time but i did a complete restore and when i put my sim card in it does not let me complete the set up process, is there a way around this without having to change my plan for an hour then changing it back?
The G1 has a way of doing this by utilizing old RC29 firmware which had a vulnerability that allowed ADB access to bring up the wireless menu to activate WiFi. Considering it's patched up now, HTC/TMobile has probably learned there lesson
Short answer: Unless you can turn on your WiFi prior to setup, I'm guessing not.
Just curious, you may want to try googling "Activate HD2 over WiFi" or "Activate HD2 without data plan" and see if anyone's managed to figure it out.
im sure you meant g1 and not hd2, but thanks!
No, I meant HD2 wherever I stated it and G1 wherever I stated it. The HD2 came out way after the G1, once HTC had realized their firmware created vulnerabilities. There is little hope that the same method would work for the HD2, they've likely learned there lesson.
Wait, you are wanting to use your G1 on the data plan that your HD2 is currently utilizing... Ohh, in that case Activate G1 over WiFi is exactly what you want.

[Q] Bypass Sign In for Wifi Setup on Mytouch 3g

Hi All. I am wondering if anyone has been able to find a solution to this problem yet:
I recently bought a used MyTouch 3g. It had Android 1.6 on it, and the seller's info was still on it. So, being courteous, I did a factory reset. The phone booted into a sign in screen, but I couldn't sign in, as I don't have a data plan. So, I upgraded using the T-Mobile release of Froyo 2.2.1. I was then able to enable Wifi (yes, I have Wifi) and sign in. I used the phone as a VOIP device and toy for a while, but noticed that the Froyo was sluggish and had video playback problems. So, I decided to root the phone, so I could install CyanogenMod. I used the directions on the CyanogenMod wiki and flashed the MT3G with the COC10 Sappimg.nbh. I was then supposed to install FlashRec and 1.33.2005 SPL, but I can't because now I am back to square one, I cannot get past the sign in screen to enable wifi, so I can't sign in and do the next steps. Also, I tried to access the device with ADB, but cannot connect, as I cannot enable USB debugging on the device (must be able to get past the sign in screen and change settings to do that). I have tried to upgrade again to Froyo 2.2.1, but even that is not working this time. Does anyone have an idea for another approach? Thanks!
I had similar problem...I went to closest T-mobile store and ask a guy there if I can use his test SIM card with data plan ( or you may have a friend with data plan SIM)...in 15 minutes I passed the screen at the beginning and now everything works fine...
Regards
Thanks.
Thanks. Yes, I finally remembered that a friend of mine has a 4g data plan and I used his card to log in. Now it works fine.

Sprint LG G2, no tethering option, bought from best buy.

Hi. I bought my phone through best buy and noticed I don't any of the sprint apps. Ive been trying to get the native hotspot to work but the option to turn it on isnt in the menu.
I'm rooted and tried the iceroom and stock versions of native hotspot. Also I've contacted another user who had the same issue, no hotspot option, also purchased via best buy.. Which is kinda odd. Does anyone else have this issue or know of a way of fixing it?
ya know, the same thing happened w/ me.......bought the phone from best buy and was looking for a hotspot feature and lo-and-behold, theres none to be found, even enabled dev settings and didn't pop up. I'm kinda dumbfounded and i really like the stock OS coming from the galaxy s4 and was hoping there was a hidden setting for it or if theres a rom that enables it because i'd be all over that lol

Extremely odd that it hasn't been mentioned by anyone else either. I cant even use any of the other tethering apps (wifi tether, barnacle, etc etc), I recieve ad-hoc errors, which I'm assuming is the issue with the native hotspot not appearing in the menu.
Still looking for a way to fix this if anyone knows how, would greatly appreciate it.

If you root and DL wireless tether you can't? Its a carrier option not an retailer option- makes no sense. Just trying to understand.. Contacting a friend now..

No. The phone is rooted and Ive tried the wireless tether app, pdanet, barnacle. Every wireless app shows an ad-hoc error in the log while pdanet gives me a htc sync error 2.
Thing is theres no hotspot option in the menu. Im sure its like that for everyone who bought the phone from best buy.

My question is: Why would a carrier do that? That is an upsell that they want to extend to every smartphone purchase, it's lost revenue. That is why I'm perplexed and have placed a call to my friend (MGR for VZW).
anyone figure this out yet? i have the same problem. bought my phone from best buy as well.
The one I had came from BB and had hot spot #debunked

Apparently this issue is caused by not fully finishing the activation process for Sprint. Sprint base apps install after activation... my sneaking suspicion is they are installed via the "Sprint ID" app but Im not sure. Either try doing the activation again, or more likely to work is to do a full factory reset and make sure you do not interrupt the process all the way thru activation.
You will then have your tethering options back. Its likely the reps at bestbuy are bypassing that part of the activation process by interrupting it so they can finish your sale and get you outta there faster. Might also be unintentional on their part but who knows.
Do a factory reset.
noob question... will factory reset remove root and twrp? i have both, stock rom. i already backed up via twrp. however, will i need to install everything again afterwards?
You need to do a factory reset, no It will not loose root or twrp. As soon as you the phone boots back up, update prl and profile. Make sure you are in a good data location or are hooked up on WiFi. After updating both of these your phone should install all the Sprint apps and you will have tether option in settings

As bigpappa pointed out... it's not necessarily a best buy thing. It's the fact the rep probably didn't finish the activation process when setting your phone up in store. It could have been any store... it's just coincidence that the people with the problem happen to have bought from best buy.
lol i don't doubt that but i just had to give him hell because he was essentially trying to call us out who didn't have the tethering option and "debunk" it when it was just a simple statement that it wasn't there and was curious as to why, ive never really seen that happen before w/ an incomplete activation but its not like it really matters because theres tethering mods n **** out there that enable it anyway so just had to give him a little bit of hell haha
so... i factory reset my phone and it never went thru the activation process again. when i tried to activate device in settings, it said it was already activated. i quit and just installed the cm nightlies and now have wifi tether but im curious as what the fix could be.
After activation the Sprint Zone app runs and installs all the sprint bloatware and base apps. If you didnt have sprint zone load and start installing those apps, or quit that process manually then you didnt finish full activation. If Sprint Zone failed to load after the factory reset I dont know what to tell you other than to do it again.

Sorry, I muffed on the app name.... I meant "Sprint ID" app, not Sprint Zone.
Edit: check /system/app/ folder for sprintzone.apk, sprintid.apk, and sprintinstaller.apk. They may be there.

Neither were there when I went through my apps before... However, I already installed CM or I'd look. maybe someone else with the problem can take a look and test it out? Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with CM for the time being and takes me forever to switch as I'm still learning.

[Q] VIRGIN android user! hi guys!

I didnt see a thread for welcomes..
Hi! i just picked up a sprint lg g2 on a free upgrade but i do not plan on activating it yet since 4g is not currently in my area, so for now i want to use this and just a fun phone for around the house. so i have a few questions after checking out some of the stickys and i dont want to start multiple threads for single questions. if this gets moved to a different area then i understand why as well. also if my typing seems sporadic its because i am coming from a htc tp2 and this is my devirgin process on using androids and rooting. so welcome to my party of self discovery!
1)since i am not activating it can i still pull all the necessary updates for the phone itself off the wifi?
2)in this sticky http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2479892 i saw no mention of a sprint code. i dont know if i should root it yet because i am currently using a htc touchpro2 im sure the stock speed is going to blow my mind but should i still do that ^^^^ mentioned above?
3)when i got the phone the lady really tried to push the S4 on me saying that the g2 will be stuck on jellybean for 2years? does rooting fix that?
4)when i do decide to activate it, is hotspot easily achieved by an app or is their some kind of rooting that needs to be done? (i already have unlimited data plan)
5)the BB csr also mentioned titanium backup app. and i checked it out and i dont understand how it works. thts for the bloatware stuff right?
6)is it possible to get that flappybird game still? i want to play it see what the fuss is about like on youtube.
i would rather not root my phone if it will stay fast but i dont want all that clutter apps either if its like a new desktop computer that comes with free aol 3.0 and etc.

1) yup
2) I personally dont adjust that simply cause the phone then feels to hot for my liking even though its safe. You can do it and if you dont notice a difference or its to hot for you, just change it back. I think the code for sprint and verizon version is 980? so... 3845#*980#
3)You can root and flash aosp (android open source project) to your phone but you may find that you like the stock software. Also kitkat will be out for our phone shortly
4) You can use a program called foxfi that you can use that will turn your phone into a hotspot and sprint wont be the wiser so you dont have to pay for tethering. Also you dont need root for foxfi.
Just play around with the stock setup and see if you like it, you may not even find the need to root. Also if you enable developer options by going to settings<about phone<software information, and click the "build number" like 6 times (the developer options menu will then be in settings<developer options), you can adjust the window animation/transition animation/animator duration to 0.5 or off to speed up the phones interface.
thanks for the fast replies!
i am trying to update prl/profile/firmware/software etc and it gives me an error. my wifi is connected and i turned off airplane mode for the updates. (i should keep airplane mode on correct so that it doesnt try to activate?)
The dialer code for sprint is 5689#*980#
The prl/profile will only update on an active phone. You have to do it manually if the phone isn't active. That said, you don't need to do it if the phone isn't active, because they are settings sent by Sprint to your phone to let it know about active cell towers and things like that.
Check the Sprint part of these forums. Most of the stuff you asked is in there in one place for another.
Side note, so you don't wonder what is going on. In the title of threads, you will see things like [kernel][rom] etc etc.. things between brackets.. The things that say [INT] stand for International. They are ports made to make the Sprint LG G2 work on GSM networks. If you install one of those rom's the phone will NOT work on Sprint. Right now, that would be no big deal for you, since the phone isn't active. But if/when you activate the phone, you can not use one of those roms and still use the phone as a phone.
should i still update my phone via the LG drivrs at least? also that dialer code does nothing with my phone. it doesnt activate the special menu. so far i havent found it but is their a list of must have apps or a list of minimal steps to get rid of the bloat without rooting? when i am in the settings>>apps menu their is a list of different google' labeled items, are all of those necessary? also someone mentioned foxfi, its only a paid app correct?
