Today it opened my phone and it shows my sd card as damaged and all the apps are crashing all over the place, so i reverted to a backup and same deal, i installed the stock htc hero rom and it worked fine, i did a wipe and installed modacos 3.1 again and it finished but all the apps started crashing again and it had all the apps that i had installed previously, how do i restore my phone to a clean stock version of modaco 3.1 without keeping all my apps installed!?

Sounded weird, can agree with that. Are you using apps2sd? Try do a backup of your sd-card, format it, wipe and install ROM. Dont restore a backup or something.
Now copy ur files back to the sd-card and see if it makes any difference
Yeah, it sounds like your ext2 (or ext3/ext4) partition for apps2sd is corrupt. It may even be an issue with your SD card. SD cards are not optimized for ext2/3/4 partitions, and as I learned through running android on my Vogue, it's rare, but your SD card can become permanently damaged by using this filesystem on it.
If formatting your SD card like sinnadyr suggested doesn't work, I would re-partition the entire card, making your FAT32 partition smaller by maybe 512MB and have everything else the same size. This will obviously result in 512MB less usable space on the card, but at that point I don't think you'd have another option anyway.
(I may be off about the size of 512MB... I'm tired and drunk and can't be bothered to look up the actual size of the swap/ext2 partitions.)
If all else fails, try a new SD card.
Your Hero can be saved
Ok... I've had this... and this is how I solved it:
-save what you have to from sd to pc
-format sd
-partition from scratch
-reboot
-put what you saved previously back on
-done
sounds easy, but it actually took me AGES in between finding out and doing it.
In my case it was due to a combination of using a program to move the cache to SD AND mounting the SD card WHILE some app was doing something (APP2SD was enabled). All I know is I never used the cache to SD program again and 3.1 is now running smooth on my hero.
Good luck
Ciao
p.s. If the steps above do not seem to work just do all the Wipes, load another rom, play with it for 2 mins, then re-do all the wipes and start off. I know I'm being a bit confusing but trust me, problem will be solved eventually. Just make sure u have plenty of time when u start the whole process

There's a guide somewhere how to repartition your SD card through ADB, this is what I did when the same thing happened to me and the partitions were corrupted.
Th weirdest thing happening on my Vibrant with Eugene R2 rom.
When I put a microSD in the slot, it can not use it past 2.19 gb (like if it was a corrupted card), but when I use the same card in my TP2 or in the SD card reader of my laptop, everything is fine. I first noticed this when I was copying over all my files and I kept getting the same errors I have had with fake cards in the past, so I tried my old faithful 8gb and sure enough, when I plug my vibrant as a USB drive, I can not navigate most folders and runing the checkdisk gives me hundreds of corruption errors. When I try to format, it tells me the max is 2.19 gb. When I take the same card (which had always been fine) and put it in the sd card reader, everything is back to normal, including attempting to format (it gives the proper size). My vibrant is doing this with all cards I have tried up till now.
Any clues?
Thanks
Did you ever run an older ULF kernel at some point? Are you running one now?
I had similar issues with both my SD card *and* the internal SD, which was causing all sorts of random system glitchiness. In my case, I suspected that this was due to the problems in early ULF kernels that caused filesystem corruption. I ended up using Heimdall (you'd use Odin if you're on Windows) to restore an official Samsung firmware, then I reformatted both SD cards, and from then on everything was fine.
There's probably a less drastic approach to be taken, but restoring to stock from Odin/Heimdall is a pretty surefire way to get rid of all the gremlins.
Incidentally, it was at that point that I decided to stop flashing anything except official or leaked Samsung ROMs until CM gets released. The price for being an early adopter is just too high
I am not sure what ULF kernels are, but all I have had is stock, then Eugene, then I did a restore to my stock backup (that screwed thigns up) so I reflashed eugene. I don't know how to use odin\can't figure out what files i should use.

Julie, I had this same problem with both this ROM, and my proceeding one, ASOPish; as have many, many others!
I too have been wanting a fix, but have not come across one. Because I am able install data onto my micro sd card via the adapter this is what I have resigned to doing. There was a mounting fix posted last month some time, but it didn't work for me, though others state that it did for them.
Sorry I couldn't give you a more workable solution, but at least, for me, this way does work.
FYI I had this problem until nero V3
Eat at Joe's
Having micro sd issues also. I tried moving some music and pics from the internal sd. It put the names but 0 data. I erase them and they come back. I reformatted the 8gb card it said 8gb free. I go back to the gallery or music player and they are all back. Check the sd with a file manager and thete they are.

hum... anyone else with this problem fix it by using nero v3?
This is happening on all 2.2 roms.
One issue was fixed, where the internal and external cards were being read opposite to what there were ..., but the issue of reading external sd above 2gigs is still there ...
If I remember correctly, this was the issue when 2.2 was released for the N1 .... they forgot to re-add support for sdhc cards... that's why they pushed 2.2.1.......
Hello, I'm running desire 3,4 and it has been working great until today. I pulled out my battery for like 10 minutes and after I rebooted from the SD card I realized that I lost everything, all my settings, applications etc.Like if it was a fresh install. All the files on the SD card are exactly the same!! please help me!!!
Not to be harsh, but you're probably screwed. When running off of the sd card, you should back up your data.img once every week or two. It's pretty easy to do, and then if something bad like that happens again, you can just revert back to your latest backup. Some builds last a long time before they go screwy, some do it sooner, but it seems that all sd builds eventually take a crap. Ususally it's acore force closes, not loss of apps and settings though, but yeah, sd builds don't seem to last forever, so back up from time to time
Do you stop your phone before removing the battery?
If no... it's your fault
When you stop the phone (normaly) you can see that it takes some time. In fact it's not just to be annoying.
If you stopped it before, no luck.
oh i see. Thank god I have a backup of a few days ago. so to prevent this to happen I need to backup the data.img only or all the apps and settings?

just the data.img . that's where your apps and settings are, unless you use an apps2sd partition, but that wouldn't be affected by a corrupted data.img so you'd still be safe in backing up only thee data.img
And if you start using a rom that doesn't use data.img you can use a app like Titanium Backup Pro.
ok thank you!
That's a rule for any electronic support. NEVER TRUST IT !!!!
Never put vital data on only one media.
My SD got corrputed twice, my first SSD was erased by XRay scaner at airport (even if Intel said it's not possible they change my SDD 3 times for this reason and at the end gave me an updated version... since then no problem. Not possible but think what you want afer that).
So backup is the key. Any way to backup will be good.
For ex, my laptop is backuped every day on 2 different hardrives, vital data are also backuped in my phone SD and on an Internet Server !!!
Only a nuclear war can make me loose my data now
Or, flash MAGLDR, CWM and then use CWM to do backups every so often. You'll be happier with the responsiveness of ROM's running from NAND anyway
Can you "hot" copy the data.img file while Android is running or must you copy it off of the SD from winmo or from the SD installed on the computer?
Because Android caches data and have delayed writes to external filesystem, there is better make copy of data.img when Android is not running. If you make "hot" copy of data.img you may get in result damaged backup copy of data.img
I'm a noob with android phone development, but I have 30 years engineering experience with computers (particularly Posix) and digital radio.
I bought my Samsung the first day, and I was disappointed at how much did not work on it: the digital connection was unreliable (even though I'm in a solid Sprint 4G area), skype didn't work, the camera didn't work well, the GPS didn't work reliably. There were various apps I had no interest in (NASCAR) that I couldn't delete.
Now it all works to my satisfaction, after a couple months of thrashing about.
This is a brief memo on what I have learned.
A couple of points:
1) Despite the use of hash codes, etc., writing to memory and the SD card is not always reliable. Make sure you have a good-quality USB cable! Get a high-quality SD card. If a memory write procedure doesn't work, do it again, possibly after a re-format.
2) Leftover data in the cashes and even on the SD card can result in failure or apparent success followed by bugs.
3) It's not that hard to restore everything from scratch. Gmail will backup your mail, calendar, and contacts in the cloud. The market remembers what you bought and will let you reload it. You can simply copy the full contents of your SD card to your PC and write it back.
I've seen a variety of bugs after semi-successful ROM flashes. Here's what I did to get everything working bug-free.
1) I copied everything on my SD card to my PC.
2) Removed SD card from Epic, put it in a USB adapter directly on my PC and used the GParted bootable disk to format a FAT32 partition, an ext-4 partition, and a swapfile. See this:
http://lifehacker.com/#!5350347/speed-up-and-back-up-your-rooted-android-phone
3) With the SD card removed, I used Odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700#Odin_Stock_Flashing
to flash
Stock EB13 CW3+ext4
CW = Clockwork Mod --- google it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
Note --- this gives you an ext4 file system, not the standard Samsung system,
and it roots your phone and installs the EB13 modem and kernel, all in one step.
I then installed the newly-reformatted SD card, booted a few times, then booted to CW3, let it do its thing, then used CW3 to wipe the battery cache and rebooted.
At this point, I had a Stock EB13 system modified only with CW3 and ext4 file system and no applications.
4) Installed Bonsai4All 3.0.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976864
by simply copying the ZIP file to my SD card and flashing it with CW3.
I then immediately used CW3 (advanced menu) to "fix permissions".
5) Booted the phone, put in my favorite wallpaper, moved the icons around, and installed my apps directly from the market. Re-connected my bluetooth headset and home wifi.
6) Did the "screen rotation lag fix" described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=926098
A good test of this and the GPS is the app "Google sky", which should track smoothly as you move your phone around. Polaris should be in the right place, etc.
7) Did the modem parameters fix described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925898
except that I set EntryRX to -100 instead of -110
8) re-connected to my PC, and copied my music and document files (nothing else) to the SD card.
Now, at long last, everything works!
In gratitude, I made donations to various people who did the work referenced above.
Excellent writeup! It's always great to see what other people have gone through, hopefully others will benefit from you experiences.
That's a nice writeup for people having continuous problems. I haven't had any actual writing issues but I've also used a good cable and made sure to wipe things well before doing anything very different. Never had a single issue really aside from the "common" ones. GPS lock and keyboard being my main ones. EB13 and bonsai 3.0 have fixed those pretty much for me also.
Thanks, this is interesting.
I'll give this a shot over the weekend when I have some time.
I also don't have too much valuable information stored only my phone, so I am willing to give this a shot.
I not sure if this is the right area, if not, i apologize, feel free to move and/or flame. lol
Anyway, I'm running fr008 liberated froyo and all of a sudden my apps stopped showing up in the app drawer. the ones i had an icon for on the home screen would show up, but be the default little gear icon thing, on click, nothing would happen (market also because that icon and wouldnt work). I tried wiping dalvik cache, cache, and finally ended up just trying to restore nandroid. Wellll.... Now the market is gone totally, but the strange thing, is that the apps show up under settings->applications, but not in the drawer at all.
I searched on this site, but honestly...I'm not even sure what words to use, everytnhing just wasnt relevant to my search. I'll be happy to continue searching (and i'm still browsing through pages), but maybe someone has had this issue and can either help me out, or point me in the right direction. Thanks.
Try a different home app. LauncherPro is the best so far in my opinion.
Well, Ideally I would like to keep sense. that's why i had chosen the rom that i did instead of CM. I just don't understand why they were there working just fine, then all of a sudden they werent. Worse comes to worse I just flash cm7 and start over, i'm just giving it a couple days before i do that.
Astro also didn't show up, and i tried doing the .zip update method through clockwork, but i move the files over, then reset the phone, and they don't show up on the sdcard...So i reboot and check for the gapp.zip on the sdcard, and its no longer there. Wtf is going on?
**edit: for some reason the phone reset and the market showed up again. Obviously my apps are in my market account, but they still show up under settings->application. I still don't know *WHY* this happened, and i dont want to reload everything on it and lose the info i had, especially if its going to be a recurring thing.

This is a total WTF! Since you are running FR008, are you using DT A2Sd to store your apps on the SD card? If not, you may want to look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790786
Once you enable A2SD by creating a EXT partition on your SD card, you can use A2SD to check the apps that are installed.
Yeah, my sd card has the ext partition from when i had the stock rom (trying to use dt's a2sd with that, got fed up and flashed fr008, haha).
But I only had a couple apps on the SD card, and strangely enough, those were the only ones showing in my app drawer. (now they aren't...)
But I'll check that link and see whats going on with it, i'm just lost. haha.

If you had an EXT partition on the SD card when you flashed FR008 (which has DT A2SD built-in) will use it. Sounds like you may want to run the "a2sd check" command in the terminal emulator to see what's going on?
Hmm. I ran a2sd check:
it says "ext partition found, but not mounted, your rom may not be steup to run apps2sd. xxxxx
your partition may be ext4 but rom may not support ext4"
also, my apps are no longer showing up in market...i'm cursed. lol
a little update.
It seems my sd card was screwy. I swapped it for another one temporarily (copy/pasted the contents though, that didnt work, so i formatted it). The phone seems to work fine, but for some reason, my apps still show up in settings > applications. But no where else. I can't use astro to back them up, and I'm not sure what else i can possibly try (aside from wiping everything and installing a new rom, any suggestions on what rom, i'm thinking cm7, but i want sense ui still).
I'm just worried that its something *I* did and i dont want to do it again.
I had a similar issue before...and what I would do is:
1. Factory Wipe, Wipe Caches and Format both system and SDCard with an ext partition
2. Flash the ROM of your choice, then GAPPS
3. Start the process of setting everything up again.
It's the nature of the beast when using DT A2SD...when the card goes, so does everything on it, including your apps. It would be a great idea to back up everything on your phone (nandroid) then copy the nandroid backup (in the Clockworks folder on your SDCard) to a safe place (not on the SDCard) so that when this happens again you have a backup of your phone that doesn't die with the card. Don't worry this doesn't happen often, but a you see, it can happen.
Yeah, i sort of guessed it had to do with the sd card (had a small glitch about 3 days prior to this, with a program that was on the sd card). I just don't know why the apps that werent on the sd card went with the sd card, but showed up in settings -> applications still (though i could do nothing with them, and if i tried to "clear data" on them, it would fail). I flashed CM7 last night and started setting everything up again. I'm going to do the whole nandroid backup, and manual backup where i can pull the apks out of the backup, so i can have a script to reinstall everything quickly when I inevitably change roms again. lol (as you can see, i've been a member for some years now, started back with the titan/ppc6800)
anyway, if you didnt read all that above, i'll summarize:
THANKS.
i had the a similar problem my apps werent showing in my drawer and my widgets on my home screens kept saying problem loading widget so i wiped everything reinstalled my rom switched to adw ex and everything has been fine since
