I liked to have my contacts ordered by last name, but I can't find that option on the Fasinate. On the Captivate for ATT it was in menu option at the contacts by pressing "MENU" then "MORE" and then "SETTINGS", and there you can change the "order of display name" to either "First Name Last Name" or "Last Name First Name"....
Like I said I like the Last Name First Name order, but can't find that option at all on the Fasinate....anybody know where it is at, if it's possible? And if it's not possible, what type of phone won't let you order contacts by the last name?!
anyone else having issues with facebook sync and contacts, my buddy said the ppl's FB pics are not syncing..
I believe that contacts sorting is a feature introduced in froyo 2.2
I don't see a sorting feature either, but for the record, my Facebook contact photos are syncing just fine. Note that I'm using the built-in Facebook sync option for that, not the Facebook app itself. I do have the Facebook app installed, but it's not configured to sync contacts.

Yea I had the Captivate before switching to Verizon and getting the Fascinate and it was there......argh.
Im learing the Fascinate is very cut down compared to the Captivate it seems. The only thing it has going for it to me off the bat is the ability to load non-market apps, but thats SUPER easy to enable on the Captivate, and I suppose you could count the camera flash. Other than that, Im not sure. Looks like I might be moving to the Vibrant now to see what it has to offer, haha.

Just a suggestion, but you might wanna try installing Dialer One, a free dialer app, the best one in my opinion. It has just about all the features you'd ever want in a dialer (including sorting by last name), and then some. Looks a whole lot nicer too, none of that kindergarten color scheme stuff.
Thanks, I hate first name sorting. I'll give that a shot.

While at the Verizon store tonight playing with the Fascinate and Droid X trying to find the phone for me, we downloaded this app as it would be necessary for me as I use my phone for business and have over 1500 contacts in the address book. Great app but how do you make it the default dialer on the Fascinate? We were able to make it default on the Droid X but not the Samsung. Any help here as this would be a deal breaker on my choice.

Hello everyone!
Just recently I got the 2.2 OTA for my Droid (rooted) and I'm absolutely loving it, except for one thing: the new MMS app. I strongly dislike the new look; I don't want to see my own profile icon and I definitely don't want to see several of each icon. I really liked the way the Eclair MMS app looked, and I really liked seeing my friends' facebook statuses next to their contact icon.
I've tried replacing the Froyo Mms.apk with the Eclair Mms.apk, which could display everything and worked perfectly fine except for when I actually went to send a message. It would force close and never show that the message actually sent, even though I got replies back, so I know they sent. Also, in order to get this to work, I had to remove Mms.odex. Once I saw that the Eclair app displayed everything and seemed to work fine, I (foolishly) erased my backup of Mms.odex and now I can't run the standard Froyo Mms.apk. Luckily, I did find a modified app that I can use in the meantime, so I'm not totally out of luck right now.
Is there any way to get the old Eclair MMS app/look back? I would REALLY love it! And please don't just suggest Handcent or Chomp. I've tried them and I just don't like them. I went through all the styling and customization options and I just couldn't get it to look like I want. All I want is the old Eclair app back, not alternatives (unless they look almost identical to Eclair's). If it's impossible, I guess I'll deal with it, but "impossible" and "Android" don't really go together...
Thanks in advance!
edit:
I attached two screenshots taken out of an emulator, just in case anyone isn't familiar (why you'd need to see them, I dunno, but I figure more info is better).
Bump. This is a good question. I hadn't really even though about how much better the 2.1 vs 2.2 SMS/MMS app. I knew there was something different but thank you for laying it out. I'm having a problem where the app isn't posting my icon. It is synced with my Facebook contacts so I don't see why it doesn't show my avatar, and if it isn't supposed to then why even change it? No sir, I don't like it. If there is any way to downgrade to the earlier messaging app I would very much be interested in knowing.

if its the problerm im thinking of, you need to make a Me contact, and put your picture there
Shameless bump. Still driving me crazy. Hoping there's an alternative by now?
If I create a contacts group in google.com/contacts it never appears in my phone (even after sync, course). But if I try to add the same group name in the phone it tells me the group exists so I can't create it. Oh Ye?!?! So where is it you stupid SGS? Show it to me. Nada!
If I create a group in my phone it never shows up in google.com/contacts. I can even go there and create a group with the same name.
Is this by design? Who belongs this bug? Android or Samsung? Do you have this problem with SGS or other phones.
Blame Samsung. They replaced the stock Android Contacts app with their own. There are many complaints about it in the forums.
Lol thanks. Is there an easy or not so easy way of reverting that crap samsung contact app?

You cannot uninstall the Samsung Contacts app, which is what syncs with Google. But you can install another third-party app and use that as your interface instead.
(Actually, I think the Samsung app does download the Google groups data element when it syncs, but just fails to display it.)
I have tried a free Market app called Contacts Evolved, which does display the contacts, by Gmail group, in separate tabs. A little buggy, though, with some force-close issues.
The more I try to use the really usefull features the more problems. I have the SGS almost a month and now can properly say (since this is stuff from other galaxy):
"Oh my god, it's full of BUGS"
I've created a calendar in Google calendar and it showed up in SGS. Great! This is rocket science.
Then I deleted that calendar. Vanished from the phne. OOooohhhoo!! Great.
Now I create another calendar. Nada. Zero. No way to make the calendar appear. Did I consumed my one calendar limit ?
Oh boy. This is so bad. Consumes a lot of time.
FM radio is mono. GPS is a joke. Contacts and Calendar have more bugs that entries. You get the strange sensation that when you peek under the hood it's a great hardware in the hands of the wrong guys. Just put vanilla FROYO please. It's easier and you can fire a lot of incompetent engineers.
I have 5 calendars in google calendar. Why this crazy phone only shows me 3? And what can I do besides selling it?
Sync and reboot are useless.
EDIT
I installed Gemini Calendar just to see if I can overcome the problem and with that app I can see all the calendars. I choose them, but the events I have in the ones missing from the stock SAMSUNG cal app, don't appear also. So one step closer to nothing.
just a question, did you enable viewing google contacts from the display option in the contacts app?
In the JP# Froyo builds, Google contact groups are listed (because this annoyed me too), so expect it in the official Froyo release when released

Ok, let's hope. But there is already too much stuff sliding to froyo. It's gonna be the SGS mother of all fixes... not good, not good.
And now this calendar bug. This is starting to annoy me.
I actually used groupy a free app to overcome the stupid contacts apps from Samsung...shows all the groups perfectly from my mail contacts
I'll try that one also. Thanks
"Contacts GroupU" also does the trick. Good to group the google contacts on the phone, which did not work for me before.
I create the groups in the Samsung UI, fill them in the GroupU App. Thereafter all the stuff syncronizes correctly with my google account.
What doesn´t work for me, is vice versa.
Will Froyo fix all these problems? The answer is in September...

Suuuuuuure it will (not). Froyo will be the mother of all fixes... Oh boy. You have to work in some other business to believe Froyo will solve all these bugs.
It will solve some, and bring different ones. That's a fact of life.

But then again, Samsung are focusing on fixing the major, most common bugs, so it will possibly fix all the major ones.. Also, Froyo is a refined version of Eclair (and a lot of Froyo stuff like highmem is already integrated in eclair builds). Google has probably fixed a lot too.
But nobody knows. That's the reality. We all have different beliefs, but they are simply that. Nobody has proof!
yeah i went form iPhone to SGS and I'm pissed that the really essential stuff doesn't work.
But i have some hope that it will be fixed soon because there is really a lot of these phones around, maybe they will fix the lag to.
Love the open system but then my iPhone was to open (jailbroken).

The Samsung Contacts app is part of Samsung's firmware, not Google's Froyo OS. Now, Samsung may bundle a firmware fix along with Froyo, but that is a different matter.
http://github.com/jubishop/Facebook-for-Adobe-AIR
Source code for Facebook client for Adobe Air
We have air for Froyo now.
Is it possible to compile into android air apk for a GOOD Facebook client?
For the love of God, please.
technically if it were developed using adobe's software tools and is sourced for AIR it shouldn't be hard to port in to an .apk i guess we shall see...
Have you actually tried Facebook for Air? It's just a news feed and status bar. No other features. It is worse than Android Facebook.
Plus, AIR apps must be optimized for mobile. This one wouldn't be too hard to optimize if you have all the code, but it isn't just BOOM throw it into Flash CS5 and BOOM export to APK.
i was really hoping for something good out of this...facebook for android is downright HORRIBLE. I don't understand why the iphone version has not been put to use on android, considering there are more android running devices than ios.
Well, from the other apps I have converted, this should be easy.. will report back soon!
-edit
not sure if this will work as is, with the popup to login and all.. but I will try
Thanks dg

The fact that when you get a notification it takes you to the mobile site is a big issue, unless I'm missing something. That just seems like they got lazy in their design because you can view all of your updates manually. Also a lack of IM feature also kind of sucks. It's got a nice look to it, but the iphone facebook app is much better.

can't get push notifications either. you have to keep refreshing your app.
if you click the "messages" tab too quickly and pick a thread you were already messaging someone in, it shows up blank and you have to restart facebook... sooo frustrating
My biggest gripes are no push notifications, no tagging, no picture commenting, no liking statuses, and no "places" functionality.

i think facebook is just doomed for android lol
The biggest gripe I have is previously on my Dream(G1 for AT&T Canada) they ported the nexus facebook app over- which is the same app with a few more features. They had the ability to Sync your pictures/updates with contacts in your phone. It worked like the official twitter app works. On our phone its just plane broken. If you uninstall-reinstall the app and go through the setup it will give you a "finish" button after signing in the first time. If you hit your back button on the touchpad you will see the contact sync. Sad thing though is its just broke. If you Go to your accounts sync in settings you will see the SNS setings up top then the Facebook down below your Gmail. If you click on it though nothing happens- on my Dream it went back into the facebook app's sync settings.
I also agree with the other points people have brought up on no comments on pics etc. The app will eventually be updated for the Galaxy but until then we just have to live with crap. I decompiled the app back in the day and wanted to modify it a little bit but never got around to actually doing it. If I was to modify the Official Android app, would this violate copyrights? Is it based under GNU licensing? I have seen "Colored" versions of the Official app in the market and wondered if they were violating terms by selling a black version of the exact same app? Anyone care to shed some light?

So youre telling me you see this: (pictures are in order according to my post on how to get there)
http://wtfokc.com/sef****/0.pnghttp://wtfokc.com/sef****/2.pnghttp://wtfokc.com/sef****/3.png
This is what happens on my Cog2.2 B7. I reinstalled fresh, get the first sign in, then I get "Finish". If you hit your back button you then get the Sync options. This function however doesnt work for me and hasnt on any of the Rom's Ive tried so far on teh captivate. I have read a lot on it and it appears to be a problem on all the Galaxy devices. If yours is working, I'd like to know how?
Only thing I can think is you have your SNS settings setup? Those are the ones in Account/Sync options at the Top -> Facebook, Myspace, Twitter. If so, they will auto sync pictures and junk for you- however it loses links very often- or did for me in previous versions of cog. I would get wall posts and pics in my contacts.. then next day I'd only get twitter, if I got any at all. Also my contacts would lose thier pictures and wouldnt let me re-add or associate them again. I would try over and over to reconnect the contacts to FB and couldnt unless I totally removed the account and reset it. This hap'd multiple time for me. It was rather craptastic syncing and aggravating..so I stopped using the built in SNS accounts all together and just use the official apps now. Only downfall is Facebook's sync doesnt work, twitter's however does.
Hey guys,
Looks like I got mixed up with the two different versions of the Nexus. I'm a Vibrant (Galaxy S) owner myself. Yesterday, Mom came home with a Nexus! They're basically the same phone, so it was easy to navigate, etc. She had some major gripes though...
First of all the contacts and dialer app in Gingerbread seem to be quite a step back from what I've had in my Galaxy S since I got it months ago. You can't side-swipe the contacts list to either call them or message them, it doesn't have a list of letters on the side so you have to scroll through the WHOLE list in order to get to where you want, the dialer app looks pretty but it doesn't bring up names as you press the different numbers.
Is there any possible way to bring a Galaxy S style dialpad and contacts list to the Nexus? These features may seem like not a big deal, but when you're dealing with over a thousand contacts it becomes quite important.
Any suggestions would be very welcome! Thank you.

I dont see why not, but it would most likely require porting some portions of the Touchwiz framework

Hardware wise they are almost the same, but software wise, they're lightyears away. Vibrant runs on Samsung's TouchWiz interface, the Nexus S runs on pure Google Android operating system.

You tap on the picture to the left of the name, a box will come up and you can quickly call/text/email/gtalk/map/whatever.
As for the list, just swipe up/down the contact list and you'll see a little navigation square pop up on the left, you can then use that to drag up and down to go to the letter you want real fast.

My guess is no, the dialer/contacts app relies on the TouchWiz backbone too much.
My suggestions are above, and also, teach her how to use HER phone and not your phone.
How about installing that dialer app from the market. Damn what's the name of it, I'm drawing a blank. But it doesn't need root and it can be your main dialer and its much better than stock.
Ah its called dialer one.

Load up the people widget.
It'll ask you to select a profile like favourite, co-worked or similar. Select favourite for now. Add someone to that fovourite prifile by pressing the + button on the bottom of the widget.
Now that person is stuck as a favourite forever. There is noting you can do to remove them. If go into the details for that person it will say Group = favourites. Go to edit the contact to remove them from the group and you won't have the option.

Yeah I noticed that "feature" in the People widget too. Which is why after about the first two minutes of using it I decided that the People widget is useless and removed it from my desktop.
It amazes me how such a basic feature as removing a contact could be missed by the HTC developers. Almost as bad as making a top-end phone and then deciding to put an arse-end speaker in it.

Thats my point, editing it doesn't work. despite removing a contact from a group, it will still appear in the widget even though you have deleted them from the group. Try it...
Pick the widget up and drop it on the edit box, the one next to the remove box. Now tap favourites. Job done. I admit its not the most intuitive way of doing things but the functionality isn't missing as you claim.

It won't work if you do it like that. What you need to do is go to the People app, go the Groups tab/column (for me it's on the right of the individual contacts tab), go to Favorites, touch Menu, select "Delete group member" and then mark the group member you wish to remove. Confirm and then it'll effectively delete the said group member from the list and the People widget.
I have Android version 2.2.1, updated on December 23. I live in the Philippines but I believe my Desire HD is from Spain as even the box and the Manual is in Spanish and I got the update for 2.2.1.

No, I do it exactly the way he describes with one exception - it works. I think he can't figure out how to remove someone from a group. He just needs to unselect the favorites group. HTC Sense gives you the option for one contact to be in several groups (which is great), and so there is no option 'none' in group selection menu.
