Free hosting for your roms on my personal domain - Nexus One General

Hi all,
I am on this forum for a long time, and try a lot of roms. I've never paid for them (sorry), and searched a solution to help you to development.
When I download a rom, there's small problems... time to wait on server, or big manipulations to do, pop-up and so...
I have a big hosting place in Switzerland (60 Go, no transfer limit). This domain is very low used (that's for my very small rock band).
I could make a subdomain for posting roms, with ftp access and some additional features like version comment if necessary.
Is there an interest for a place like this, or do you think that's not a good idea ? I think there no legal problem because Android is open source, isn't it ?
What do you think about that ?

I think it's a great Idea.

I may start one of these up myself. Mirrors galore

Feedback for Desire HD webpage

Hey Guys,
I fell in love with my new Desire HD recently so I've just started building a hobby website and it will have a few pages or resources for the HTC Desire HD.
It's far from finished or optimized but I'm happy to host any related files or ROMS if it helps any of You or the Community out..
Please let me know what you think it should include. In time I hope it will have many Desire HD resources and links and quite a few Android things too.
Any criticism is welcome - I'm more after function as opposed to fashion. Cheers.
Feel free to PM me with advice. I'm sure XDA doesn't need a thread about my personal site, Desire HD related or not.
Grant
Stunds like a good idea. Put up some guides on rooting and roms. Gonna root my dhd now in the holidays when I get some spare time over

If you have a disassembly guide i would be very happy.
Afaik there is no one (searched with google and YouTube)

Nice website with good user friendly design
Would like to more apps in the "andorid" section of the site such as Springpad or Tunein Radio.
When were at it with audio apps I would recommend subsonic. If you want to stream your music library

if you want more apps inbox me as i have in excess of 5 Gb worth to be added on
depends if you have enough space on the server for lots of them
and because im nice and have ALOT of free time on my hands at the moment, if you need and resources and building let me know and im sure i can provide you with what your looking for (such as guides or articles about things for the DHD, )
Thanks for the ideas and feedback so far guys.
Defectus: Yes. I'll put up some recommended Guides on Rooting and Roms. This will help me learn too. I'll check out Subsonic as well. Feel free to suggest any other apps you are passionate about, if and when.
malte41: If I see a Disassembly Guide - I'll certainly add it - if the maker doesn't mind. (or I'll link to it). Cheers.
karthics4: Thanks. I'll certainly be adding more apps in the Android section. (I'm trying to get hold of some beta programs too so I can maybe do a review or two.) Keep the app ideas coming if you want. I'll try them out too.
fkofilee: Thanks. Server space or bandwidth shouldn't be a problem. (Unlimited) I'm not sure if I will host other people's apps. I'm happy to, if it's easier for the end user/visitor, but I want to also stay true to the Android Market so people can always get the latest app version. Having said that - I'll keep an eye on updates and attempt to keep everything up to date. Thanks for your offer. I'm certainly open to suggestions and links to resources and helpful info.
Feel free to email me at any time from the site or through XDA or even this thread etc.
Also, thanks to the ROM makers whom quite a few have given me permission to host their roms.
I'm hoping to change this username to Grant Barker (which I've registered) so please don't be offended if my name changes in this thread or somewhere else. It depends on the mood of the Gods. I mean the Mods.
Anyway, thanks for the advice. Please feel free to keep it coming. I don't have as much free time as I'd like - so please be patient and I'll get things done as soon as I can. (This includes dead links, no links, image optimizations, broken CSS etc.) Your feedback inspires me more, so I appreciate it.
Cheers.

Looking for a dev.

Hey there, I am looking for a dev to help me realise a dream I have of making a multi-lingual picture decorating program. If you have ever been to Japan or Korea, you know that the picture sticker booths are madly popular amoung people under 20. I think that with the huge android base in korea and the sparking android community in japan, this app has potential to be incredibly successful. I already have friends in japan and korea who could help with information and of course they have agreed on translating everything.
If you think you could be good at developing a program like this, I would love to work with you!
Thanks.

Nobody's interested? Really?
Hi,
What working arrangement do you propose?
What features do you envision for this application?
I am a dev always looking for projects.
Thanks,
Barry.
Well, I would like to work very closely with the developer (I'm a dev of sorts too so I know how important it is to work closely with the "customer"). I would be very specific as to how things should look and work. I'm almost always available, too, so the project should progress quickly. At first, I'd just like a working English version of the program, and Korean and Japanese versions could be built after (since I'm assuming your preferred language is English). Anywho, I am thinking that this App would be a paid app (no good place for advertisements) and I feel that the Dev and I could split any revenue 50/50 (I think this app could sell a minimum of 10k copies... though I'm an optimist).
I hope that answered your first question. Let me know if I misconstrued.
Features? Without getting into too much detail on the public board, I would like it to be able to take pictures from the gallery (and to have camera access) and then do something like this to them.

Thanks for your time and consideration. I hope you'll take on the project!

probably not. I just dont have the time to play around in an environment i am not overly familiar with. Thats why i would like to work with a more experienced android programmer/developer.

[Q] My board as an Android App?

Hello there,
i'm the owner of a small board with just onenor two thousand active users and they always try to force me to "invent" an application for their mobile phones to access my forum. Since i have an Android phone, most of my users have Android and Android is easier to publish and create, i decided to look for an App for my forum for Android devices!
I don't know much about programming and coding, so i googled for some kind of a building tool, but didn't find anything. I want to make my forum accessable from Android devices! The tool, if something like that exists, should not end up in a final 100% perfect version of my board.
I'm happy about every single answer you guys are able to give!
Best regards
Poly
Research tapatalk.
Already heard about tapatalk, but doesn't the user download the tapatalk app to access my forum? I would appreciate an app which shows my board icon and name...
What about Google Appinventor? Is it easy to work myself into?
Btw i don't want to pay for this project, since my members also won't pay for the app!
Tapatalk can be a dedicated single forum app. For example look at the XDA forum app. That's based on the tapatalk framework. Its definitely the way to go.

I know, but on the Tapatalk Website a single app for my forum costs for a lot of money for android as well as for iOS.

Roms we can't download featured here 1,500plus views struck a nerve

{Over a twentytwo hundred views- i seem to have struck a nerve. Alot of us had this problem- then I solutioned it out for us all}
Says [ROM] in the title but theres no rom to be had????
You had this experience lately? They make you Click here... click there. These guys make an XDA member play whack a-mole-look-for-the-rom link games?
Because of proprietary registration requirement some featured roms on this page cannot be downloaded by XDA members. Why is this being allowed?
XDA set up a perfectly reasonable system that worked JUST fine. WE DON'T NEED 50 websites to sign up for!!! - to get roms. All we need was XDA.
A few groups think they are entitled to change XDA(to its detriment) into their *****. Post links to these roms I'll put them here. We need to break these folks out of this habit. They say it isnt against XDA rules for them to do this- well then it wont be against XDA rules for me to post them
right in this post at the bottom of this post.
Its what ANDROID is all about. Open Source.
Mik and this Sac's Kingdom rom and some others cant be downloaded. (I like their roms- since I'm trying to download em-duh)
Has money changed hands? what is the deal?
Why are these roms --that we can't get unless we register on their crappy webpages-- featured on XDA Android Rom page? WTF?
And for all the sychophants, buttsniffer brigade and scene kids- racing to their rescue-:you see their troll comments in abundance: If every rom you ever download you need to sign up for their proprietary page- why do we need XDA then?
If this continues- XDA is cutting its own throat. I won't use a rom I have to sign up elsewhere to get it.
(So please post mirror links to Mik Roms and Sacs Kingdom Roms so the rest of us don't have to register)
XDA set up a perfectly reasonable system that worked JUST fine. WE DON'T NEED 50 websites to sign up for!!! - to get roms. All we need was XDA. This is a game changer.
I understand the sychophants and scenies will do what ever they are told.
But XDa had it right and these people are messing up a good thing- tryna make it their thing. And I call bull****!.
And this isn't a Q&A. This needs to be addressed by XDA- or we can just post links and nobody would be mad.
We just want straight-up Rom links!
If two guys do it- MIK and SACS to drive traffic for their own websites- it'll be prevalent in a week.
And XDA will not have any relevance.
The buttsniffers, sychophants and scene kids say- it only takes a minute to register over here, then over there, then here and here too! yeah! and there and...- blah blah blah.
What you gonna do when synergy or Kings or ACS or -take your pick- does this same thing?
And all the rest of them do it?
This needs to stop NOW.

Hit thanks if you agree with me...
I agree completely so I am willing to give up this second post on the thread for what you guys need it for

Asking why XDA allows this isnt a Q and A- these lames are taking up space that actual developers offering real roms can use. This practice needs to stop and wont be put in a lil box elsewhere. All these guys are doing with tacit XDA approval- it seems- is promoting proprietary webpages that take people off XDA. To their site. They offer us nothing but a registration elsewhere. They are just taking up XDA space and tryingto get XDA members onto their own webs.
I agree.

Damn it sounds like some folks got sour milk in their cereal. All of the sites you are complaining about are "FREE" to register on and do not ask anything or for any money from you to get access to their links. So if XDA admins don't have a problem with it why should anyone else. After all it only takes about 60 second more out of your day.

+1 completely agree.
i got no beef with signing up for something to download any of these roms. my phone is nothing without these devs, and i will get the roms from wherever they want to post them. if i had the time to sit down and tweek a rom to the way i like it i would but i dont. taking the extra 2 minutes to signup for another site is pretty ok with me

Oh gee- we get to look around on each new proprietary website for 15 minutes to sign up for something we dont want! The way it was was fine- these people are making XDA irrelevant. I don't want XDA to become irrelevant.
I want it the way it was and these people need to change their practices. XDA people need to get their head out of their asses.

Talk about taking up space. If your not happy here then feel free to move some place else. I've never had any issues downloading a rom on this site, 99% of the time I don't even have to go to the developers site to download the rom. They are doing this for us for free and your whinning about how to get the ROM?
Holly crap.. i was just thinking this today..
I want to download sacs new sense 3.0 rom but i have to register.. anyone have a mirror or straight link to his rom..
Great job to them for making this rom but cmon..
Haven't used a mik rom or any rom I need to sign up somewhere else.

I like XDA just as it is. I DONT want to go ELSEWHERE: to someone elses website to sign up for their stuff. I want to stay at XDA in a system that worked just fine.
Kinda toolish to tell me to leave XDA "if I'm not happy"... thats kinda weird logic- I want to stay on XDA- not leave it to go to proprietary websites. You need to take your pills.

Or you could just do what I do and not use the Rom. If they want to link to their hard earned site for their hard earned credit, let them. I don't want to register, I don't download, and I let everyone else be happy and merry and move on with their lives.
I think I want XDA to stay like it was and not become merely a quick cover page for 50 proprietary websites. I don't want to get in a troll/flame war with some nobody. I just want up and down links to roms(like its been). And i'm saying that if your frauding XDA just to post web page links for your own stuff- its you who need to "go elsewhere".

SGS3 Roms Distribution via DropBox

Please give me your input on this idea aimed at ROM Developers of the SGS3.
Since the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with 50gb of dropbox space for two years, could you rom developers please use dropbox folder sharing as a way of distributing your roms?
Sometimes getting roms from mirrors and ad-filled file hosting sites can get really annoying. It would be really convenient if we could just join dropbox folders from a rom developer and have really easy access to roms. Devs simply need to post the folder link on their rom detail post and people can join anytime. Add folder restrictions so only the folder owner (in this case the rom developer) can modify the files. Limit your shared folder to the latest builds (or two) of your roms so people that have joined wont eat up too much of their DropBox quota. I would think like 1gb max per shared folder.
Since Dropbox is hosted on Amazon S3 infrasfructure, we would all be getting really fast speeds when downloading roms! Get rid of all those "60 seconds wait". Hopefully this method will also save developers from the crazy costs of hosting.
I dont know about you guys but my dropbox is nowhere close to be using 50gb! I wouldnt mind using 10gb of that for roms!
I also know that we have the awesome rom manager app but even that mostly links to slow mirrors. Please chime in and let me know what you think.

I think drop box stops excessive downloading like photo bucket. It is great if you PM someone the link but they don't like excessive downloading. Correct me if I am wrong.

I think thats if you direct link to a file thats made public. But what about joining folders (which would eat up your own quota).
Dikirim dari GT-I9300 mengunakan Tapatalk 2
1) Dropbox would nuke the link in no time due to traffic
2) inviting everyone who wants it to a folder would both be a HUGE pita also would break XDA rules RE direct links.
If you want file hosting, one of the best is dev-host, also XDA has a relationship with them, so if you are a RD, RT, or RC you get a free premium account, see here.
There is also Jumbofiles though they have issues at times due to load.
Also if you are a somewhat notable developer, you can sign up for a Goo.im account here.
I could go on, but there are tons of good hosts.
One of the problems is that stock SGS3 roms are HUGE (600-800meg?), so more traditional hosts wont do.
Dont you just wish we still had megaupload?

Ah ok! Thanks for the explanation! That means this dropbox idea is pretty much out then. I think a lot more rom developers need to know about that developer hosting site and the free premium account perks. After all this thread was a result of my frustration of downloading a 600mb rom for 2 hours and timing out (the recent Wanamlite rom for sgs3)

Its just crazy, with touchwizz you are basically getting a second whole framework on top of the google stuff.
Even "lite" roms don't seem to be able to get much below 200megs, and lots are in the 600meg region.
Current SGS2 CM9 roms are 128megs, which is "large" compared to CM7 at 101megs give or take but still!
The host info was on the portal, not much more you can do to bring peoples attention to things.
Maybe if you see a dev having issues with finding hosting, point them at that portal post, even if they are not an RD/etc the free dev host stuff is good (if not great for the SGS3 as the limit is 512MB ) (the XDA premium thing is 10 files at up to 10gig each!)
