I'm getting increasingly disappointed with the issues on the Tmo HD2. Aside from the fact that Android phones/OS are gaining in popularity and Windows 6.X is just a buggy dead horse, there are other TMo HD2 annoyances like:
- Bloatware stupid apps and sample crippled apps hard-coded into ROM.
- Firmware random lockups.
- Lack of a good full-featured tethering solution.
- Lack of a good WiFi router/sharing app that supports good security encryption.
- Lack of better selection of applications that actually WORK.
- Lack of a better performing touch screen that won't freeze up.
I know that there's limited knowledge out there on the TMo Vibrant, but it's safe to say that given the vast amount on knowledge here in these XDA forums, there's sure to be a few users her that can answer at least some of my questions. Especially since I am TOTALLY Android ignorant.
My Questions:
1) Is it safe to assume that ALL Android apps out in the Android world will work on the Vibrant?
2) Are there Tethering, WiFi, Router apps ou there that will work with Vibrant?
3) Is the Vibrant Camera & Flash (assuming there's a flash) comparable to the HD2?
4) Since Android is a "Google" thing, will it run Bing and other popular search engines/browsers?
5) Will Vibrant support Microsoft Mail, ActiveSync or compatible clients?
6) Are apps installed the same way (.cab style) as HD2?
7) Is the Android OS/Vibrant easily susceptible to Trojans/Viruses/Worms?
Like I stated, I am tottaly ignorant on Android and this new phone. Any help in answering the above would be appreciated.
Thanks
i don't have my vibant yet but have had a MyTouch 3G running android since last year
learned real quick, not all apps run well (whether free or paid apps)) some create other issues in the android system. Best bet before installing an app is to float it up on a forum and ask others experience and not install too many at a time
i got to the point i would install one, and run it 3-4 days to make sure no problems had crept in before thinking about installing another new app

I was running the Droid for awhile before switching to Tmo because of cost reasons, and here is what I know of android from the past couple months using it and loving it.
1. Yes, since it won't be running some outdated archiac version of Android like 1.5 or earlier all the apps on the market should work.
2. Without root there is pdaNet. Once root happens, you have the option of downloading wifi tethering, or until 2.2 comes out.
3. Vibrant won't have flash on the camera, but what I have seen from the Galaxy S camera it looks good. (Can't be worse than the Droid camera)
4.That actually depends on carrier, I.E. the Verizon version of the Galaxy S will have bing on there. Tmo just uses Google. There are a couple different browsers that you can download from the market. I personally recommend DolphinBrowser HD.
5. You are required to have a gmail account signed into the phone, and you can if need be forward all your emails to that gmail account, but also it comes with Activesync support.
6. Apps are installed via the market or sideloading (unless you have an AT&T phone because they love crippling their phones). And that is all done with the .apk's that can be loading on to the SD card.
7. As far as I know, no. I haven't experienced that yet *knock on wood*
Hopefully that answers your questions. Obviously I haven't used this exact phone yet. These are just answers that I have from using other Android phones

I had the HD2 and I enjoyed mine up until I broke it 2 weeks ago, maybe try a custom ROM because none of those issues occurred on my device.
i had the HD2 and i can say it was a huge hype a machine and tremendous let down. i had high hopes for that phone and it just did not deliver.
I have been using the vibrant these past few days and i can say its everything i hoped the hd2 would be and so much more.
it runs 2.1 so all the apps in the market will work fine.
for tethering, right now all you can do is run PDAnet as mentioned above, but its supposed to get 2.2 Froyo by summers end, which should have tethering built in. As long as Samsung doesnt pull a Behold 2 on us, and i doubt tmobile would cripple android.
the camera is stunning! i hate the lack of a flash but ive used it at midnight with nothing more than a porch light and pictures look amazing! no noise or blurring. I heard theres a night mode on it but i have yet to use this feature. but the camera is definitely better than the hd2s. and it records 720p videos.
And if Bing is in the market you can definitely use it. there are a ton of browser in the market u can use instead of the stock one, and what i like best (over the hd2) it can be set as your default browser. The stock browser is aazing and with the snappy processor and sensitive touchscreen it works wonders.
Android has exchange support built in, it should sync emails, contacts, and calendars.. i cant say i have used it tho.
Most apps are installed thru the market but can also be loaded through the memory card using a file browser. The phone does have one built in called "Files".
Ive had an android phone since the first g1 and can say virus have never been an issue.. not that the phones are invincible, but i doubt ull have issues. there is antivirus software in the market tho if u need it.
Other than that, the Super amoled screen screams amazing. u look at it on a black screen it doesnt look like its even on. This is the best screen ive ever seen! it rivals my hdtv lol. One look at the Avatar movie and ull be sold.
The app launcher, unlike the start menu on the hd2, is fully customizable. u can reorganize the apps and dock in any order. The dialer and applications/home shortcut cant be moved however. it can also be set to be orangized alphabetically or in list view.
My favorite feature is the dlna support. i love android but theres never been a true multimedia phone for me. this does it all. i can stream movies from my networked drive onto my phone, or i can send stuff from my phone to my ps3 (xbox 360, or dlna tv would work too).
And the phone has the screen size of the hd2 minus all the bulk. this phone is anorexic skinny! the thinnest android phone ive seen. and in a good way.
I prefer the phone over a nexus one due to the screen quality, and 16gb internal memory. And my friend has an evo 4g, the two things i like about that phone that this doesnt have is the front facing cam, and a flash on the camera. but the evo is bulky compared to this.
Hands down, the Vibrant is the phone to get on the Magenta!
Hope this helps.
Hey guys, I have been using smart phones for a while and usually get around great without rooting. I had the HTC Dream back in the day and couldnt use it without rooting, lol. I am upgrading from the G1 which has met the end of the road for me. What are the benefits of rooting? With the Vibrant which I will finally have on Tuesday, is it necessary? And if it is HIGHLY recommended, how do I go about rooting it?
i would say root it cause its really easy takes not even 5 minutes seriously lol but i would also root it cause there is lots of bloatware on this thing so many apps that arent needed
I am not generally a rooter but this one seemed so easy (and it is) that I did it.
I didn't root the phone to dig into the files, I did it just so I could install stuff that I couldn't otherwise install. It bugged me to see a cool app and then read "YOU MUST HAVE ROOT ACCESS". That's not a problem anymore.
You certainly don't lose anything by rooting so I would say go for it.
Any other disadvantages/advantages
really there are no disadvantages accept maybe warranty but i think theres a way to unroot so no probs but once everything starts picking up there will be way more advantages than disadvantages
Besides the fact of removing awful apps (Bloatware), you can use your phone to tether. Also you can use an app called SetCPU to overclock your processor to actaully use your 1GHZ processor which speeds your phone up, along with a ton of other root apps. Youll be able to flash custom ROMS, flash themes, etc. Not sure if there is a volume hack for the vibrant yet, but that has been a reason for past rooted phones as well.
I highly recommend it...
AdFree Android removes nearly all ads from websites and apps
reasons to root
1. Use apps that require root access (such as Titanium Backup and Drocap2)
2. Remove preloaded bloatware (who needs TeleNav when Google Maps Navigation is totally free?)
3. Full access to filesystem (useful for developers and general tinkerers)
reasons not to root
1. Always involves some risk (however small) of irreversibly damaging your device
2. Could void warranty or official support
3. Makes it easier for you to accidentally mess up your system.
I only rooted my mytouch and g1 phones so i can get apps2sd, wi-tethering, and overclockcpu.
however, since the upcoming froyo update will allow most of that, i chose not to root for the time being. the phone is very fast and stable for my current needs and has an ample amount of internal memory. the only other reason to root for me would be to flash roms/themes because of my dislike for Samsung's TouchWiz.
it depends on what you ultimately want to get out of your phone.

Same for me i had the g1 loved to root however i switched to unlocked iphone and now im back with the vibrant , the vibrant does everything i want now and the ease of the rooting might have me root if froyo is delayed by Tmobile or something.
Understood, also from reading I dont think there is a way to unroot the phone at all is it? And another ? since you all are being so helpful, is there already an app to at least see what speed your processor is running at. i know that task managers arent really needed, but some of them showed ur cpu speed as well as the load on it. is that something that anyone had an interest in and found. thanks for all of you all's help
Hmm, still debating on rooting. Waiting for my Froyo update. Plus I want to port my Harley-Davidson theme I made for my G1 to Vibrant. Hopefully they don't use those CRAMS files on Vibrant, cause that is when I had to stop themeing my G1. CRAMS was too difficult to mess with. Is the signing file method gonna be the same as G1, or is there a different testsign file? Plus I hope to see my stock file, plus a thinned down, less bloatware file, and themeing templates. So many factors to consider.
I say ROOT! I've never rooted a phone till this one. I just couldn't stand all the bloatware that was in this phone. They just had to be removed. Now all I'm waiting for are some sick ass ROMs I've seen done for other devices to hit this one. I'm sure I'll need help doing so, but this community has been fantastic when help is needed.
Plus side for me is that I also have a 3 week old New still in the box Nexus One as a backup phone in case I screw this one up.
I rooted mine because people kept saying you could tether, but none of the tethering apps actually WORK. They install fine, and Wireless-Tethering says it's working, but the access point never shows up. And Wired-Tethering says the kernel isn't compatible.
So I'd like to hear from any rooted users who actually got them working AND successfully tethered a laptop with it.

if there's any delay on the froyo update, i'd blame it on samsung
I was hoping not to have to root the phone so soon - especially until I could reset it back and a recover like Amon's is available, but after a glorious couple of days of honeymoon, the lags are just killing the experience for me. And I don't think I have a choice now, but to root. I'll try a general reset and see if it works. I have another Vibrant that seems to be only slightly laggy. But I have to return that one and keep the problematic one :-(
Even moving icons on the desktop now takes almost 2 second. Linpack still clocks at 8.5. No problem at all playing a video - just OS operations. The camera froze for 5 minutes and I finally had to just restart the phone. Restarting the phone is not painful on this device though. Very fast.
At this time so early in Vibrant development.. it honestly doesn't really make much of a difference if you root early or root later. Just enjoy the phone for what it is as of right now until the modding community becomes settled in. Just be aware if there are any incoming OTAs if you are unrooted to make sure that the OTA didn't do anything that would change the rooting process.
- Recovery (ability to flash custom ROMs) is in the making
- Custom ROM developers -- in the makes soon
So here's the question. Should I go ahead and invest on a Vibrant (but work for it will begin when I get the Slide done) cont... about 7 hours ago via HTC Peep
If I keep getting the donations I am now, I can get the laptop along with the Vibrant, just considering the Vibrant first ...cont about 7 hours ago via HTC Peep -WesGarner

I would personally go ahead and root it to unlock some essential applications and it takes <1 minute to do and its pretty simple. But there isn't any rush to root it now or later.. not at least CyanogenMod6 (Android 2.2) gets released for this beastly phone to have JIT.
nm found it

With the root method given so far, I think the only thing you have to do to unroot it is to remove Superuser Permissions. That's the only thing that the root procedure added to the phone.
I'm rooting my phone when I get it, just because to me (at least) it is a part of the true android experience. I'm just geek enough to like to play with my equipment! Hurry up T-Mobile!!!
HI everyone, I currently own a droid eris, I have an upgrade coming up next month and my two main options are the fascinate and the droid x, I am highly leaning towards the fascinate because motorola rubbed me the wrong way.
My main issue is, that I dont think I want to install a custom rom on the fascinate, I did do it on the eris, but the only reason I did it was because the HTC sense UI was so incredibly laggy and slow. I have tried other galaxy S phones and this appears to not be the case, it looks like the galaxy s UI is pretty solid and fast.
There are a few things I would like to do however, my main priorities for this phone are to get the wireless tether running, the same that I have for my droid eris, and to be able to replace all that bing crap with everything that is google and good. SetCPU is not a big priority yet, maybe later. I realize that this means getting root privilege on the phone. What I am wondering is, is it as easy as just using the one click root and then installing wireless tether and setCPU? or is it more involved than that? I have read so far that the fascinates roming methods are quite a bit different than the eris, so I may stay away from roming for a while. Just need to get the priorities done (wireless tether and bing replacements)

One click root.
Wireless tether is possible
Bing is replaceable, see that link! You need a different launcher though! (LP?)
Send me a message if you need help doing any of this.

I just have one question, after i install the samsung drivers on my windows 7 machine and enable debugging mode on the phone and connect the phone to the machine. The actual file itself that has the one click root, I extract that file to my computer and click the install root correct? or do i extract it to the sd card on phone?
Also, does it matter what directory the file is extracted to on my computer or does it run from anywhere.
Hey all,
Even though I've pretty much a big lurker here for a while, especially the last year. I've finally upgraded to the GS3 today, so my Heroc is finally, after just about 3 years, retired.
I wanted to thank everyone throughout the years that made this device so great. I won't name individuals, there are too many and I know I'll forget someone. You all are the best! Thanks for keeping this device so great for so long! Your roms and other resources have truly been a delight.
And to my Hero, you are my hero. I've never had a phone I've been so attached to. You've stuck through the rooting, roms, and other nonsense I've put you through, getting dropped, squished, and other tortures, and never dropped a call, died at the wrong time, or missed a message. Well done, true and faithful servant, well done.:crying:
Carl
Congrats on the GS3. Very nice device. I was giving it a serious look-over, but the screen feels just too big for me. Even though the Evo 4G LTE is not much smaller, it's enough that it I find it "just right." I'm planning to switch over to it soon.
However...
I wasn't very courageous with my HTC Hero. I had it rooted for over a year before finally taking the chance and loading a ROM onto it. I kept reading up on the different ones available, knowing I could always go back to stock if I didn't like it. But I felt paranoid that I might screw it up. And my first time flashing a new ROM, I almost did... fortunately it all worked out. I'm zipping along on CM7.2 now.
It took me a full weekend of searching around to find the apps and widgets that appealed to me, giving enough functionality to match or surpass what I'd had before. I missed the sleek integrated feel of HTC Sense, but... there are fine substitutes to be had if you look hard enough. I've customized my Hero now to the point where I'm regretting that I didn't do this sooner. It's a really great phone with CM7. But there's no beating around the fact that the processor is anemic compared to what is out there now. You can't play memory intensive games on it (e.g. Angry Birds), but in a way I kind of like that... one less thing to waste my time on.
One other nice thing about the Hero... is the grandfathered waiver on the 4G monthly fee. Upgrading adds on $10/mo. Of course, once you have reliable 4G in your area, it's well worth it. Anyway, I suspect the easiest way to motivate an upgrade is to put the two phones side by side. No contest on performance with the GS3 or 4G LTE.
I actually was so scared to root it, I waited like 6 months before I did. But boy o boy, once I did, I think I unrooted maybe once just to clean up a really bad ROM install. I went though the different CMs, NFX, LiquidSense, ExEnHeroC, AospMod (on his for a long time), WildHero, and tried ALOT of others and I finally landed for almost the past year on the TeamHeroC rom. I waited 6 months to root my Hero, and 3 weeks to root my Nook tablet. I rooted the GS3 pretty much three days after I got it. Gotta love XDA!
I've tweaked it to the moon using firerat's and data2ext, played with the different kernels like Decafuct and Jaybob's and UOT kitchened it. I have put it though the mill, and it still runs purrs right along. In fact, if I didn't really need a wifi hotspot right now, I would still be with it.
I don't know if it's that this being the first Android Sprint phone, and at the time there weren't very many out there, or what, but there've been and continue to be so many people working on this phone over the years. I know the HeroC is a legacy device, but there still seems to be lots of development going on. I can only hope the SG3 will be as supported.
BTW, it is a transition going from the Hero's small screen to the GS3's massive one. But it is sweet to use!
Carl
Hey Carl,
Great to hear about your experience with the Hero. I've not yet tried the TeamHeroC... sounds good. Is that the same group that created TWRP? Out of all the ROM's which one would say is:
Best for HTC Sense like GUI with reasonable performance
Best for flat out lean and mean performance without sacrificing usability
I've only just gotten a hang of the Android OS architecture and understanding the various layers, so I've not even started to think about replacing kernels. It certainly sounds like you can mix and match a number of components to achieve your own unique blend that suits you. It'll be fun to learn more about it, which will prepare me for rooting and modding my next Android phone (most likely the HTC Evo 4G LTE). Thankfully I'm all set for a phone discount so if I manage to brick my Hero, I can quickly get a replacement without significant cost.
I'm also looking forward to trying out ICS and JB, to see if people have cooked up ROMs that can actually run efficiently on the Hero without producing much lag. That's pretty much the Achilles Heel of the Hero--the processor. If there was only some way to upgrade it.

Shelnutt has done a really good job with jellybean. It runs rather well.
As far as flashing kernels and roms, the hero is hard to screw up. Make nandroids and flash away and you can try everything.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Thanks for the suggestions, ajrty (or do you like to be called SeaDoo?). I had seen mention of WildHero before but I'll bump it to the top of my list of next ROMs to try.
While I've been appreciating some of what GO Launcher does, I'm astounded at how bloated it is. The frigging thing takes up 24Mb of memory, and that's just the launcher alone! The task manager, power master, and weather widgets also consume quite a bit of space. Also, when I elected for it to be the default, it effectively hid ADW Launcher from everything except one sub menu under settings. It took me a while, but for a moment I was thinking the darned thing had uninstalled ADW without asking for my permission.
Are you using TWRP or CWM for managing your backups? If you use TWRP, do you also use Goo Manager? How do you deal with preserving current data when switching ROMs (such as contacts, SMS and voicemail)? It's my understanding that nandroid and the like replace everything completely. Or, is it that once you get a ROM configured the way you like it, you do a nandroid backup for just the apps and system, leaving data out of it? I suspect that if you have the data stored on the SD card that a nandroid backup not containing user data would simply leave it alone when restored.
hey cytherian,
I agree with ajrty33. If you want a good ROM, TeamHeroC by Jaybob et al, is the best, and it's what I rocked for the past year. I tried others, but always came back to it. Wildhero is probably the most advanced Sense ROM out there, and runs really well on the Heroc.
I can't speak too much for launchers...I have always ran my Heroc with LauncherPro. I doubt it's available anymore. I know when I rooted my Nook tablet, it installed ADW as the launcher, and I have to say I like it. So far on my galaxy I'm still on with TouchWiz (for now).
I always ran with clockwork for my recovery, and it always treated me well. for a backup, I used (and still do) MyBackup Pro. Short of a nandroid backup it catches all my SMS/MMS, call log, and other stuff. If I installed a new ROM, that would give me all my data back.
It sounds like your a bit confused below about nandroid backups. A nandroid backup (that you would do from recovery) takes a snapshot of your system (ROM, data, cache, everything) and saves it to a file. If you then install a ROM, and it either messes up, or you just want to go back to the system as it stood just before you installed the new ROM, you can use your recovery to flash it back. So a nandroid backup is a necessary part of playing with ROMs....as long as you keep a good copy, you can get your phone back the way it was.
Backup programs like Titanium or MyBackup, just backup data and apps. They dont backup your system (I dont think Titanium does anyway). So if I installed a new ROM, I would use it to restore, for instance, all my SMSs.
Hope that helps,
Carl
Just wondering why there is no rooting solution, or custom roms for this device yet? I have the unlocked S10+, and don't see much news or progress on a rooting solution. Is there a good source for news of this somewhere else? There are several things I'd like to do, but being able to put custom fonts on it would be a big help. I don't understand why Samsung is so against us putting whatever font we want on these devices.
Thanks for any help.
Wrong section
Next time don't buy a smartphone before root released...
It is a big question if root for s10 will be ever possible, because samsung made some changes to security
Root already happened but there's no "user friendly" method yet, and not many benefits currently.
Keep in mind that Root is losing importance, it peaked around 2014 but the various hostility from banking apps or paying solutions contributed in reducing root users, some employers also don't allow you to have a rooted devices because of the vulnerabiities it comes with.
Magisk Hide was great but hit or miss on different devices.
@topjohnwu rooted his own S10+, you can try to contact him for testing if you like, he's doing an awesome job.
XDA is quite trippy today, my post got submitted twice please delete.
thread should be moved. this is not a release.
and again people asking for root should ask themselves if they bought the wrong phone:
a north American model.
will probably never be rootable(the U, U1 and W are all the same and have a locked bootloader)
the rest of the world's s10's will be rootable. its 100% sure. just need someone to get recovery to be flashable.

also read up on what's the difference between the north american modela and the international ones.
then realise the folly of your question/purchase.

This is one reason why exynos and snapdragon should be separated. No one gives enough info when posting ANYTHING about what version of S10 they have when they are inquiring about whatever they are inquiring about. It makes all the difference in the world. They are essentially two DIFFERENT phones. Why lump them together. The only thing they really share is a name. The internals are different phones. Nothing firmware wise interchanges. Since the mods wont separate the phones in the forums, everyone should mention what S10 they are asking questions about if you want the correct answer.
I have been here for the past 8 years my old acct somehow got hacked..and all the phones I have had were possible to be rooted, including s7, s8, s9, note 4, etc..For someone to say never hasn't been on here enough although Exynos is way easier to root than snapdragons but is it possible? of course, can it happen? in a couple months. In today's society you don't really need to root your phone as companies are making their phones fully customizable

I second this, before root was such a necessity to me, in my OP5t I was using it mostly for Titanium backup, on my S10+ I think it is not needed, it is much cleaner to be setting up your device from scratch preventing corrupted app settings to mess with the phone.

I believe root is extremely important if you are a heavy ROM user and like to install several ROM for testing then I would suggest you to have to have root to make nandroid backups and have Titanium Backup, otherwise really not needed you expose yourself to vulnerabilities.
Root and XDA = Development! Rock on ???
Root is not just for mods. On my Pixel 3Xl, I tweak my kernel with FK manager to get better battery, more efficient memory usage and better CPU rendering. It's also nice to use apps like 3minit battery mod, system-wide Adaway, Titanium Backup and many others. While Samsung has improved on ways to Mod parts of it's phones, these mods are not available systemwide in 3rd party apps. For me, root is essential.

Eudeferrer took the words right off my keyboard. His points are exactly why I have always rooted. And besides all of the vital things Eudeferrer mentioned above, for you guys who think we don't need to root anymore, please explain to me how to put the 1600 fonts file, I normally use, on my new S10+. Because it was as simple as can be on my rooted S7 edge. But can't find a way to put these fonts on my S10+. And I absolutely hate the few fonts that Samsung ALLOWS us to use. Seems really stupid, that we pay over a $1000 for a device, and they limit what we can put on them... Also, I'm tired of having ads pop up on my phone, not in my browser, but right on my phone!!!!! This NEVER happens to rooted devices. Which the underlying MOST important reason to root is TOTAL CONTROL OF OUR DEVICES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It all comes down to preferences. Only reason why our phones doesn't come out of the box rooted is because it’s an inherent security risk..I have never had any issues with the battery not lasting long enough, low on memory, cpu overheating and there goes the saying..don't fix what isn't broken..As for backups? In today's phone standards backup is stored in apple's icloud or google's server, no need to use a 3rd party app. As for ads and custom status bar? you don't need to have your phone rooted for these. There are plenty of modded apps floating around that disables the ads. Don't get me wrong, I used to be a flashaholic back in the days when I had the htc hd, nexus 4, using NRGZ28's energy roms, there was just a point that I really didn't need to do all that. It is time consuming. Rooting android just isn't worth it anymore. Back in the day rooting android was almost a must in order to get advanced functionality out of your phone but times have changed. One thing I can say is that a lot of things has changed throughout the years and a lot of people lost interest in rooting their phones and have left this website. Look at the pixel 2, 3 xl forums and now compare them to the nexus 4 and 5 forums. You will see the difference..
I beg to disagree with you. This is the same excuse I often see people giving when they are stuck on a device that can't be rooted. They become complacent. The bottom line is, YOU pay for your phone. It should be YOUR choice to root or not. It's YOUR device not theirs. Take the inherent risk if you want to, or not. Everyone who roots understand this risk and takes it willingly. We are not in a communist country to have someone (Samsung or Phone company) tell you how your phone has to look or what you can do with it (as long as it's legal and not hurting others). It's this brain-washing nonsense that never makes sense to me. Android backups on Google cloud DO NOT save data for most apps. For someone like me with over 200 apps installed, this is a pain every time you get a new phone. It's either sit there for hours and log in individually to every app or run Titanium Backup and in 15 minutes you are done. Don't but hit me over the head, but to me the choice is obvious and more than clear. Perhaps if Android ever evolves to there point where you can control these things on your end, then root will truly be unnecessary.

I've been running rooted Android phones since the HTC HD2, even ran custom ROMs on the T-Mobile Dash before Android existed. The S10e is by far the closest thing to a non-rooted phone I could live with. I would agree that the urgency for root is less than it used to be, but is still very much needed for many of us. I gave the SD855 version a chance, but after a week as my daily driver, I'm returning it & reverting back to my rooted S7. Once the new Exynos models get stable TWRP/root/etc., I'll pick up the G970F, but despite the improvements over three years, I still prefer my rooted S7 to a stock S10e.

Agreed! Another valuable reason for having the option to root is "freedom" - e.g. you don't have to rely on the phone/OS provider to store all your private data on their backup repository (however incomplete the data they store might be) and hold you ransom because they have what you need, and could have stored locally on your own device. I still haven't been able to fully restore my apps since changing from a Pixel 2XL to a S10+.

What ads? there's no completely random ads like on Xiaomi's "YOUR PHONE IS VIRUS PLS SCAN" if you see any sort of advertising in Samsung apps it's because you agreed to it, go back and opt out of marketing information.

Man, sorry to be a ****, but you are just confused. I've been rooting phones for a very long time, and I have NEVER suffered any security problems. Rooting is NOT an inherent security risk. That is some crap that the manufacturers made up, and the sheep follow their instructions and believe everything they say. And while you must be some ridiculous aberration, MOST people have had terrible problems with battery life, lagging and the such. That's why they rooted! To be able to control the processor, gpu and memory. And why would you depend on the backup of Google or CRapple??? They are ALWAYS crap, and never give you back your setup. AND THERE ARE NOT PLENTY OF NON-ROOT APPS WHICH DISABLE ADS. There are plenty of "BROWSER" apps which help with ads. But what about the ads popping up on the phone itself??? NONE!!! And I see you completely ignored my question about FONTS!!! How the hell do I pay over a $1,000.00 dollars for a device, and THEY DICTATE TO ME WHAT FONT I CAN USE????? We own the phones, not them. So Rooting IS still worth it, and a much better situation than having a non-rooted phone. NO non-rooted app allows you to customize your device, or gives you the control over your device the way rooting it does. Being able to put any one of 1600 fonts on my device, USING TITANIUM BACKUP TO EXECUTE AN EXACT BACKUP OF MY SYSTEM, changing the color of ANYTHING I care to, getting rid of ANY app I don't want on the phone, being able to tweak the hardware to MY satisfaction and having system wide Adaway that works flawlessly are just a few of the reasons to root your device. And if you can't see this, than just get used to saying, "bahhhh bahhhh". Because you've joined the flock of the GIANT CORPORATION!!!
