I see that there are a multitude of threads on this forum about best ROM/Kernel combos, but I am looking at it from the standpoint of which gives the best battery life. Performance is not an issue, all I am trying to do is get excellent battery life. I would like to keep SenseUI if possible, and an undervolted Kernel is a must. I have seen some information on Ava-Froyo V9 and was wondering if anyone has tried it and do they like it? Any information would be much appreciated.
I loved Baked Snack 1.7, and at one pointing got 21 hours of battery life, I am using myn's Rom now andking it so far, both use sense

Go to the kernel testing thread. In there you'll find which is most efficient, the idle energy draw is probably the most important stat. FWIW, CM w/ Snap 9.5 has the lowest energy draw and so probably the best battery life -- it's what I use.

if you like sense,
ROM - evio 1.4 or baked snack 1.8
kernel - kings #6 bfs or baked snack #6 (reads #2 in software info)
+ 2 to looking at the kernel comparison site someone put up.
To me it is completely biased though because what works great for one person and their EVO does NOT mean it will work as great for YOU. I would first find a ROM that you like and then experiment with trying each different kernel. Remember to wipe the caches before you switch kernels and give them a few days to balance out and see what they are like.
Personally I get the best battery life with CM 6.0 Final + Kings CFS.
Then there is the whole CFS vs BFS debate, again TRY IT FOR YOURSELF. My phone eats battery like crazy and it will drain in a few hours, with moderate use, and if I switch to CFS I get about 40% more battery life.
So what I'm trying to tell you is that take everyone's recommendations with a grain of salt and try every kernel and BFS/CFS and see what works best for you!
Good luck man
I'm getting ~36 hours off Fresh 3.2. I tried going to 3.3 and tried Myn's but neither came close. Not sure what the difference is, but I'm good with it.
Thanks for the replies guys, it's been a big help!
So my N7 arrived two days ago, and I immediately unlocked, rooted, and flashed some things. Currently running Codename Android with Trinity Kernel.
My battery is absolute crap now though. Its been two days so I thought the battery more but have settled by now. All auto sync off, brightness at lowest setting, apps sync every 4 hours, still bad! Does calibrating still work? I read somewhere that it was debunked and it didn't work. I would appreciate any help. I mean, my Maxx is getting better battery life.
I uploaded some screenshots of the battery after only 1 and a half hours.

Go to the motley kernel thread in Original Development. He provides a mirror link for the stock kernel
I loved Trinity and the TKT app but for some reason im getting much better battery life with motley kernel. I originally did some troubleshooting and fixed some apps that were causing wakelocks. My battery life got a little better but not by enough (could only get 3 or 4 hrs screen on) so i switched kernels.
If you feel like experimenting do this:
Nandroid
Wipe Cache + Dalvik
Wipe System
Factory Reset
Flash CM10 nightly (any rom of your choice)
Flash GApps
Flash motley kernel (i used the 484 GPU version)
Fix permissions
Reboot
I get awesome battery life now and performance is great.
Your title should be something like this: "After rooting and installing battery draining rom and kernel I get bad battery life on my N7"
Stock JB and kernel should yield decent batter life.
With the proper rom and kernel the Nexus 7 easily match or better the googles battery life claim.
FYI the latest Trinity kernel is a battery hog.

I wouldnt go as far as saying its a battery hog, but i ran the kernel at stock clocks and while performance was much better than stock i still had tons of drain that i now dont have with a different kernel.
Ran Trinity kernel at 1150mhz and had awful battery. Back on stock ROM and kernel and seems to have improved a lot.

I feel like the battery is pretty decent...
Get off those custom Roms and kernels until you understand how the device is meant to perform.
You appear to have 87% after 1.5 hours, that equals about 10 hours, how is that bad? I get about 8 hours if I am intensely playing with screens, apps and games, 2 days if I'm not doing much. Loses 2% at night with wifi off. No root.
trinity kernel and the pure aosp rom, at 1150mhz. id say not bad at all..
Trinity Kernel is a good kernel. I went overboard by saying it was a battery hog. I did have it overclocked up to 1500hz on-demand and it ate up battery faster then I would like. But this is with the newest one, a few of the older ones worked out better for me though.

I have some problems with *wakelock*
Hi.
I have installed PA 3 (15 FEB Build) + Franco Kernel r72 (I heard about people talking about the r80 but i cant find it..).
I have been looking for a guide for this kernel, is the first time I flash one and people says battery life is awesome, but I cant agree with other people. So far I have noticed worst battery life, maybe because the r72 is not for 4.2.2, maybe because I need to do something else apart of flashing the kernel?, I bought the app, and the only changes I have made are some in the screen color and put the max. cpu to less 1188 MHz, i thought that putting it less will give me better battery life but it didn't.
So far I had better battery stats with stock, for example: Last night I completely discharge then charge it full and let it rest the hall night to see how the battery will be.. With franco it jumps from 100% to 85% when i saw it in the morning (I just did a little of web browsing before going to sleep but it doesnt mean 15% less??) and with PA original kernel (They use the stock kernel with some modifications) From 100% to 99%. I mean is a huge difference, maybe I'm doing something wrong or something but that cant be good.
I'm not saying that franco kernel is bad, what I would like to know is, if I need to do some adjustment in the app to get a good battery life. I have heard of undervolting but i cant find a guide for that and franco kernel.
I'm really new to all of this so any help would be appreciate
Attachments: 84% Was when i woke up, cheking all the stuff and taking screenshots then it was 80% you can see it in the attachtments and the phone idle time too.

I did PA3 + franco r80 (test version that you can find on the first thread) last night. This morning I checked the battery drop from 100% to 96% and 6min screen was on.
I can't find the r80, can you give me a link please?

R80 is a test kernel that Franco release a couple days ago. If you ever read the OP, you'll find the link here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002782
It's even written in bold letters "Test versions (if you don't know what this is PLEASE don't flash or ask what inside)"
And here's the link from the OP, http://minooch.com/franciscofranco/Nexus4/tests/
From time to time Franco likes to test a kernel that he just implemented before putting it off as a final release. For final nightly release, you can also find the link in the OP. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002782
It's also written in bold letters "DOWNLOAD". There are two kernel versions now. For whatever android version you're using choose the correct link and download the latest one.
Last night, Franco released a nightly (r82) for verison 4.2.2.
You can find it here in the OP like I just told you. There's a .img file to push the kernel via command prompt but there's also a zip file if you click the link when you are in the 4.2.2 download link.
Next time, you should really take your time and read the thread. People will bash or ignore you.
Have fun and good luck!
P.S You're complaining about battery life and I noticed you didn't include that you have tried undervolting the frequencies. Undervolting will help you increase battery life if not a lot it should be an improvement.

Thanks a lot, and I noticed that part but I didnt think of it. I'm really new to all of this of flashing so this: "(if you don't know what this is PLEASE don't flash or ask what inside)" , just make me focus on the official release in the zips sections
Actually my question is if there's any guide on how to undervolt/increase battery life in this kernel, is the first kernel I've flashed so I dont have experience with voltages and things like that.

There's no official guide. It's actually pretty simple.
But first you will need to find out what type of CPU bin you are using. What is that you say? I will try to explain it with the best of my knowledge.
Well, it's quite obvious that we have the same Snapdragon chip but not quite the same. Each one is somehow made differently based on it's quality. There are a few types, slow, nominal, fast and faster chips. What are the difference? For one, I know that they all have different voltages for each frequency and the quality of the chip will determine how much you can undervolt.
From here I am going to teach you how to find which chip you are using, you can follow this guide on the very very top section of the page.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2048739
Second, you will need to download an app in the Play Store called "terminal emulator" (Link below).
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDMsImphY2twYWwuYW5kcm9pZHRlcm0iXQ..
Here's how to find out the CPU bin:
1. Go to the app once you have finished installing it.
2. Type in "SU" to request Superuser root action
3. Type this in: "dmesg | grep PVS" (Without quotation marks) -----> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35547734&highlight=terminal+cpu+bin#post35547734
4. Finally, you should get something like this: "[ 0.873920] acpuclk-8064 acpuclk-8064: ACPU PVS: FAST"
5. At the very end of the command, you can see that the CPU quality like above. It's a fast CPU.
If you have a FAST cpu bin like 90% of Nexus 4 owners, you can undervolt up to -100mV just to be safe. You can test it farther but if your phone reboots, that means the value that you have entered is not stable.
Here are some articles on undervolting on android:
http://bigfatreality.blogspot.com/2012/03/guide-to-undervolt-android-safely.html
http://www.android.net/forum/android-rooting/58117-droid-x-guide-undervolting-guide.html
I hope this helped you in some way. Good luck!
P.S In addition to the Franco's test kernels, you can always wait until the official nightly release. Franco releases them when testing is complete. But it's nice to see what in store for us when the official nightly comes out. LOL

Stock PA and matr1x kernel are both really good, with matr1x the battery life is about 5 hours screen, without screen it is just 1%/2 hrs.
I've tried franco and faux kernel too, but franco was a bit laggish and faux has terrible performance for me...slow ui, lots of framedrop in games...
There is no best kernel. All of them offer something a little different than the other. Some kernels work better with a ROM than others. My advice to to read up on them. Find out what you want out of it. Flash one and run it for a couple days. Make sure you let the battery drain past 20% then charge it without interrupting it. That's the surest way to gain maximum battery saving benefits. Just try them out until you find the one that's right for you. Happy flashing.
its actually made so that you dont have to worry about this stuff. kernel is just a cog. it twists and turns, who cares. unless you know exactly what youre missing of course. :cyclops:
Hello, I just wanted to ask which ROM has the longest battery life (in screen hours)...
The most battery frienly rom i have ever tried was liquidsmooth...
What do you think?
Guys please help out a new N4'er like myself. I'm stock right now and the number of Roms are kinda overwhelming. I'm only interested in battery life. I'm not in the mood to go flashaholic searching for that one ROM.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium HD app
The most important thing is the kernel and the apps you have installed.
Find the ROM with the features you like and flash a battery friendly kernel. I currently use Matrix kernel because the lower CPU idle makes the phone sip battery while the screen is off, leaving you more for actual use.
Good luck. Also, INB4L.
There is no "best Rom" for battery. It's all in how you use your phone, what apps you use, the signal strength in your area and of course the kernel you flash and how you set that kernel up.
100 different people could reply with the Rom they feel is best for battery and which kernel and you still may have different results than they do

From what I've learnt the kernel directly dictates battery life.
but I've personally opted for lean roms. If you're using a heavy rom and frequently putting load on the processor surely the battery will burn down fast. I've been using rasbeanjelly bouncing between franco/trinity and the battery life has been awesome for me.
Btw franco's r121 is godlike for me right now, in terms of both performance and battery life.
Im using liquidsmooth which comes with matrix kernel in the official release.
Im getting very good battery life probably because the cpu min is lowered to 288mhz instead of the normal 384.
Performance on the rom is great also with antutu scores over 20000
Ive tried francos, for some reason it didnt quite work for me but it is very popular because of the great balance between battery and performance. Youll get even more battery life out of faux and if you want blazing fast speeds try out trinity
Battery depends on the kernel, not on the rom.
Battery life depends on a number of factors, kernel being one of them. If you set your screen brightness at maximum high, you will see battery drain like water down the toilet. Screen brightness is the single major factor. Kernels don't really matter. It's the apps you install and run on your phone that can kill battery life. Apps like Facebook will suck down your battery like there's no tomorrow. Auto sync'ing and pushing and pulling data to and from your phone will make your battery life go down really fast. GPS and using google maps can contribute mightily to your battery woes as well.
To keep your phone from dying, just get an external battery pack and charge your phone as necessary. I have a 5400 mAh pack that can charge my n4 at least a couple of times. I never worry about running out of battery and I use my phone the way it's supposed to be used.

Battery does depend on the rom...
For example a linaro compiled rom will require less work of the cpu to move the os due the optimization.
Also some rom have init.d scripts that can help battery life a lot and there is the possibility that some programs like systemUI can have a little bug that the user dont know about it but its draining battery
The battery life depends on a lot of factors of the rom

You are completely wrong. As said before, battery life depends on a lot of things. The kernel is a big factor, but not everything. The way u use ur cpu, the scripts u apply or ur build.prop configurarion can be very decissive.
IMHO paranoidandroid 3.1 is the most battery saving ROM
