(Q) MetaMorph - HTC Aria General

Has anyone experimented with MM yet? I have seen quite a few themes and addons for other handhelds... most have stuff with MetaMorph. We have a growing community, shame there aren't themers out there!

I can never get the initial setup to finish. Always says not enough system space to extract files or something. Happens with liberated or cm6.

I believe metamorph tries to write to the system partition, which won't work without an S-OFF (security off) SPL. The Aria SPL is S-ON.

How you do that?!?!

I do all my editing by hand... safer that way, then you know exactly what's happening. You could also create your own zip file with modified textures/images/etc, make it flashable, and then sign it and you wouldn't have to worry about MM.

I've worked on this a few weeks ago with Attn1. It would be better to talk with Metamorph's dev(s) or getting a different SPL, which there is none at the moment. It seems we will need to find a work around allowing us to write to the system partition.

I agree, if we can get the dev(s) to create a version that's can be installed from recovery it could work. However I'm no dev and have no knowlegde of the inner works but it sounds good.

Why isn't rooting and custom ROMs as easy as the standard Desire!?

I've done a fair few flashes with my Desire and always found it quite easy to follow and do, but I am so, so, so confused about how to go about attacking the HTC Desire.
Essentially, I want to root it and install a custom ROM (maybe change a radio, that's it). However, there is no set of instructions in any one thread, it's all over the place.
So far, i've managed to permroot my brothers phone using Visionary. Now, the next step is getting Clockwork Recovery. However, there seems to be two version 2.x (installed by ROM manager) and version 3.x. Apparently the former doesn't work for CM7... but I cannot find how to actually get Clockwork 3.x installed (easily...).
What are the most popular DesireHD ROMs and do they all require Clockwork 3.x? Also, what is S-Off... and do I need it!?
Because standard Desire does not have nearly as tight security as DHD has. You need S-OFF to get clockworkmod, and if you want to flash CWM 3.x, you need ENG S-OFF. Only gingerbread roms need CWM 3.x.
S-OFF: Phone security off, internal memory becomes read/write, you can flash anything you want, no version checks etc.

Hmm... OK, I mean this is for my brother who is in no way technically inclined Perhaps we'll just leave it rooted for now and see if an automated tool appears for the Desire HD in the future

I suppose so. So basically, the steps are:
Root phone - Done
S-Off/Eng S-Off
Install Clockwork Mod
Install ROM
The bit I find trouble with is how to do the clockwork mod bit. It seems like CM is the best DHD ROM, but that requires Clockwork Recovery 3.whatever and to get that installed you have to go through a ton of SDK stuff. Is there an easy way to get it installed?

Please try following the advice you are being given and search the development forum, if your not willing/able to devote the time to reading up on S-OFF and installing CM7 please leave well alone and save us all a little time
To be honest I think that dhd is quite easy to root. You have one click tool in stickies so really a monkey could do it.

Yeah, downgrading makes it a bit harder, true. But after downgrading it is a breeze.

I wouldn't hold your breathe, whilst there is a simple-ish downgrade route the chances of anyone going to the great effort of needlessly finding and exploiting a new security flaw are remote. Anyone desperate for root will probably take the downgrade route and anyone unable to grasp the steps involved would probably be better served by a stock rom

Tech support, without root access you are unlikely to do anything terminal to your DHD software wise, so that should limit your tech support to hardware issues. With root access ham fisted people are returning phones with user inflicted software problems

Questions you're afraid to ask

So I installed the new Sense 3.0 Fusion ROM and it's awesome. I couldn't figure out how to edit the app shortcuts that appeared on the lockscreen, though, so I posted over on a different forum and the admin answered it for me. I felt dumb, however, that someone like me - and like all of us I'm sure - who consider themselves somewhat tech-savvy sometimes can't figure out the solution to seemingly easy questions. The answer, by the way, is to go into the personalize menu then choose lockscreen and hit settings -- I know it sounds dumb, and I thought I had already tried that. My point is, sometimes we're too afraid to ask questions that seem dumb so we never do. I'll do my best to answer your questions, and remember, Google and xda are your friends. Maybe you can even post fun tricks you've found and we can all help each other a little. If this is a stupid idea then I'll just let it fade off into oblivion...

I believe it originated due to a dev named KingKlick. He was notoriously called out for stealing other peoples work and naming it his, thus the CM team created the work "Kang" due to him.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's it.
Q: are there any dangers in using PD15IMG.zip?
Q2: I see people having issues where recovery won't mount system or cache partitions, which pretty much bricks their phone. Is there any indication to what causes this, and how can i avoid those issues?
I dont no of any danger flashing the PD15IMG.zip. I used it on a MT4G that I was selling (due to cheap silicone) and it put the phone to out of the box Stock. Good as New.

I used visionary 14 with Root.Rar file to acheive Perma-Root. I have also rooted using the g-free method (the semi-automated one) and have went back to stock using the PD15IMG.zip as well, with no problems.
You've used pd15img from both rooting methods? I only ask because I thought I read somewhere that pd15img can have issues with the rooting method that didn't use gfree. But if you've done it then no worries

PD15IMG.zip can be various things, I've seen it as taking you back to 100% stock and as flashing a new radio. Going back to stock with it I've read is easy enough (and I've done it once and I rooted with visionary/unlocker method), and I hear warnings all the time about just putting it on the sdcard and booting into bootloader to change the radio but it worked fine for me.
As with everything read the entire, or most of, forum before along anything you're not comfortable with.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I have used PD15IMG on a visionary root as well with no issues.
A question that I did have and felt like a goof asking it was not being able to get into my recovery by holding down volume down + power. The issue was that it would constantly load the PD15IMG when I tried this and would not allow me the option of booting into recovery because I kept that file on there anmed PD15IMG.
Once I took it off of the sd card, I was able to boot straight into recovery without issue. My workaround now, because I like to keep it on my sd card in case of emergency is simply keeping root explorer on there and it allows me to change the name of the file to whatever I want, allowing a boot into recovery by the v+p method and If I need it, I can just rename it through root explorer and it will load and put me back to stock!
And FWIW, I think this thread is a fantastic idea!

If you are completely wiping when you install ROMs and don't use Titanium to restore backups I would try flashing the radio (at your own risk of course) or running the PD15IMG.zip and reverting to stock. If you aren't wiping completely do it, if you are using titanium know that it can cause errors when restoring data.

Gingrerbread & Rooting

Hello everybody! I'm new to the forums. I also got a really big question to ask. Well I usually root my phone with Visionary using a TempRoot. Then I updaed my Evo Shift via OTA, or going to the HTC Software update thing and now I can't really root my phone I guess. Is there a solution to root my phone even though I have Gingerbread? If not right now, maybe soon? I really want to use the tethering app to tether to my PS3. PLEASE HELP!!!!
As of now no there is not. And it might take a while before there is one. Idk if your phone already came with the ota update, but if it didn't you could have waited cuz the same day the ota went live there was a rooted version here already.
Just about 2 hrs later it was rooted.Pretty much a fundemental, if htc or sprint push out an ota update it will unroot your phone.

Regarding the leaked Gingerbread update and semi-bricks

Well for people who had a brick caused by VISIONary that was fixed by flashing the leaked Gingerbread update, I think I have an idea that might work on rooting it.
Why not replace the stock bootloader and recoveries that come in the PC10IMG.zip file with Clockworkmod recovery and the Engineering SPL. That way you can have S-OFF, which allows you to use to use Gingerbreak to root and CWM recovery which allows you to flash a different ROM on the G2.
Does this make sense, or did someone already try this and failed? I got the idea from the method I used to root my G1.

And this doesn't really belong in the dev section, should be in Q&A

And where's the link to the #G2ROOT IRC channel?
If I'm not mistaken, there's no way to get thoes items on the phone as the package won't pass signatue validation.
If we had thoes items, then we wouldn't need to root the leak rom, we could simply bypass it by flashing a new pre-rooted rom..

Do u know what an md5 sum is? If anything is modified, even ONE BYTE, the sum changes. That is how u know if a file is corrupted/tampered. Signature verification is the same thing different name. The fact that you can't change the recovery because its not rooted means that you cannot bypass the sig verification. End of story. This idea will never work.

MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP ANY USEFUL INFORMATION OR APPS FROM YOUR PHONE, BECAUSE YOUR ROM IS GOING TO BE WIPED.
First download the attachment. Remove the numbers from the name of the file so that it is renamed PC36IMG and place this on the root of your SD card. Power off the phone, then boot into your bootloader by holding the volume down and power buttons at the same time. Accept the update. If everything went OK, that should get rid of that Revolutionary at the top of your bootloader and flash the phone back to S-ON.
Next remove the file from your SD card by either rebooting your phone or going into your RECOVERY. I'm not going to give all the details for this.
Next, download this file.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VSFLE9CD
Rename it PC36IMG, place it on your SD card and follow the same steps as you did with the first PC36IMG file.
Let me know if that worked, because how to unroot the phone has seemed to be forgotten around here. Everyone is just happy to root.

That doesn't work completely for Gingerbread.
You can downgrade the ROM back to Froyo, but the S-ON tool will not work with the new bootloader, and the bootloader will not downgrade by running any of the PC36IMG Froyo files or RUUs if Revolutionary was used to turn S-OFF.
Assuming that you mean to unroot and regain S-OFF on an Evo 4G that was rooted using Revolutionary...
It seems that this has been worked out.

You need to flash an unrooted stock ROM to roll back your HBOOT to an upgradable version. I assume you used the modded 6.17 HBOOT to S-ON, but didn't flash a stock ROM to restore your HBOOT to stock?
Because the modded HBOOT is a higher version number than Revolutionary, most likely it believes you're already rooted.

You essentially have two options:
- Run the RUU (ROM Update Utility) for the latest stock ROM on your PC
- Flash the latest stock ROM, in PC36IMG.zip format through FastBoot
Files for either/both of those can be found in my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17206283&postcount=5

Ahh thanks so much you're a lifesaver. And do I download the hboot in your link or just flash Rom
