I have download virtual PC and installed unbantu as a virtual PC on my machine. I downloaded an example rom as a test and extracted the system.ext2 file from the zip file.
I am very new to linux and want to start editing the system.ext2 eg update some programs etc. I am not sure how to mount the .ext2 file so that I can go in and edit it.
Can anybody help me out?

Hi,
I was wondering if the .txt files created in dos get converted to unix format when i compile new rom? i put few txt files into the files2 directory. when i edited them they were in dos format however after i ran the mkrom.sh to build the rom, files converted to unix format, which causes problems when they are loaded on my phone.

The file it replaces is wince.nls
The only way it can be run is to place the file under a directory under program file
If I use the same method that is used it will damage the rom (I think)
So I need a method of placing it under the program file

I'm trying to copy the larger vga .exe into my windows folder, but it won't let me as they are read only. how can I do this
maybe I'm being a dumbass, but could someone tell me how to do this?
help me please
use a tool like Resco Explorer that can set/reset attributes, or can overwrite read-only files.
cheers bud
or just use shortcuts to the original exe file?
I had the same problem with some "Pocket MSN" files.....
Try to rename the old files. For example, rename them by adding filename"_old".exe
Copy the new files in place and try to delete the old ones. If this is not possible, just leave them.......
I'm trying to graft the OEM folders from one ROM to another. However, I cannot copy the files from the ROM on the device because they are protected. The directories will not compile themselves when the new ROM is flashed because they are from a different ROM. I know this has been done. The question is how?
Hmm are you trying to copy files from the device to a folder? or simply replace modules from another release?
To fix modules into working DLLs/EXEs simply use recmod
e.g
recmod CameraDriver.dll
It will then recreate CameraDriver.dll inside the CameraDriver.dll folder with the IAT table all fixed.
Hope this is what you meant
delete the original folder or the file that you want to replace with the new one, or remove it to another folder if you want to keep it as a back up
I can see you need to replace module (folder) with file or file with module?
is that what you want
I've used the method described by whiterat. Thanks!
ok, but when you dump the ROM, it will make the Recompiling file automaticly, at least with me
Hello,
I am trying to copy a file (from my smartphone to SD card), which have a 'ROM' attribute set and... it is impossible - acces denied is showed (even in Resco Explorer, Total Commander). I can't even change that attribute.
Please help me to find any solution
Best greetings,
RA
You should be able to extract files from the ROM file on your PC thanks to the tools provided in one of the sticky about ROMs modifications.
Unfortunatelly...

I have extracted an 'nb' file from my ROM file, but WinImage can't open it ("not FAT16, FAT32 file"). It is WM6 image file, what tools to open this 'nb' file?
Best greetings,

I, too, am trying to find a way to copy some ROM attributed files.
Ultimately, I am trying to move/copy some apps from one smartphone (WM5) to another (WM6). Is there a way to copy them to a zip file and move the files that way or maybe even using a backup copy (i.e. using Sprite Backup?) and restoring to a different phone?
Any help or direction would be appreciated. If there is another thread out there, please be sure to point me to it since searching brings up a lot of different threads.
u need to extract the rom.
Funny, but you make it sound so easy... ;-) I've been searching to figure out how to do that and found some instructions I'm hoping I can follow for the one phone, but not sure it it will apply to the old phone (WM5). If I do manage to dump the ROM, where does it go and does it extract the files in cab format for easy upload?
Update: I found a file extractor at http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6700-xv6700/56057-6700-rom-dump.html which may have originally come from Buzz... (thanks Buzz!)? so now I have all the files and modules off the old phone, but am running into some issues installing. I can transfer the files indirectly, and can find the specific application file, but when trying to run the app, it tells me that it's still missing files to enable the program. Any ideas on how to determine which files they might be or how to install the files via Activesync?
