Vibrant won't let me upload my app - Vibrant General

This is driving me nuts! All of a sudden Eclipse won't let me install my app on my I am working on to my unrooted Samsung Vibrant There are no errors in the app and it uploads fine on my Cyanogen Moded G1 running 2.1. I have not changed anything on my phone or in the project and because it uploads just fine to the G1 I figure it has to be a problem with the phone (although some, but not all of my other apps I have in eclipse upload to the phone just fine). I uninstalled the app, restarted my phone, restarted eclipse, restarted the computer a thousand times but every time the console just keeps giving me this message:
[2010-09-13 09:31:35 - Image Viewer] Uploading Image Viewer.apk onto device 'T9591e92523f'

I have restarted a thousand times- I have no idea what to do and it is killing me!!

Which version of Eclipse and ADT are you using? The latest SDK update that was just released has problems with Eclipse 3.6. The updated ADT (0.9.8) is reported by Google as only working on 3.5, not 3.6.

Hmmmmm- that's a good question. I did update ADT in the midst of this whole debacle but I can't remember if it was before or after I started having problems. It's weird that it would work with some projects and not others though. I will see if I can downgrade to the old version and see if that fixes it. Thank you!!

I'm getting the same thing on my captivate.
I can install the apk to a magic running 2.2, a Droid X running 2.1, and multiple emulators, but not the samsung.
I can install other projects, just not this specific one. I'm not sure where to look to see what makes it different though.
Any ideas?

I don't have these problems on my vibrant - I can hit run in eclipse and the apk gets transferred and loads automatically. I have no clue what could be causing the issue you guys are seeing. Could something have changed in later revisions of the device?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

I had Eugene's hybrid rom installed a while back and the eclipse console would report a successful install of my program; however, it would not only fail to launch but also be nowhere to be seen on my phone. There would literally be no trace of the program on my phone despite the supposedly successful install.
I went back to stock via Odin and the problem disappeared. I don't know whether the rom was the culprit and am too tired laying in bed right now to do an empirical study to find out :O

In my case it turned out that I had two activities with this attribute:
android:label="@string/app_name"
apparently the eclipse plugin doesn't like to push an app with two app labels.

I am having this problem on my Vibrant as well. I think a prior installation of the application failed...
If I recreate the project with a different package namespace and transfer the files from the old project over then I am able to upload the application via eclipse again.
I'm not sure how to clean out the prior install. I too am running an unrooted phone...
Not sure if it is related, but since this started happening, my phone has been dying overnight and won't boot up unless I remove the battery AND sim card. Thankfully I have a good internal clock. I've been using my phone as an alarm clock so this has been quite inconvenient.

Random data usage

Hi guys,
Not sure what's happening on my Vodafone Magic...
Rooted it so i could install the HTC (htc_ime) keyboard. All that went fine all working ok. However since i've noticed my phone seems to be randomly using 5mbs of data every few hours. Can see this in netcounter. At one time i actually caught it happening, checked taskiller and closed everything that was running, yet the data still carried on transferring!!!
I've done a wipe to factory and set up again, just checked the phone before it was on 9mb, closed everything in taskiller, left for maybe an hour or two just looked and it now says 14mb.
Any ideas???
Could be the update problem I had. The phone downloads an update but fails to install (because the phone is rooted otacerts.zip does not match). If you catch it again you should be able to see the download progress in settings software update or the file being created in /cache. As soon as the download completes the update fails quietly and the cycle begins again. I'm looking for a stock ROM but for now I have copied /system/build.props from the ADB JFv1.51 ROM and is seems to have prevented the download from starting.

Turn off Data synchronization and see how it is. Maybe this is sync traffic
Downloaded JFV1.51 CRB43 ADP (10791) from the jesus freke blog.
adb pushed build.prop to system folder on phone, will leave it a few hours now and see if the data count randomly goes up or not, cheers!
Surely everyone should get this problem when they root? As i haven't put on a custom ROM or installed jesusfrekes stuff, just rooted it to install a keyboard!
Still doing it, went from 33mb to 37mb.
Could of done the build.prop wrong i guess, do you mind detailing the complete full procedure just in case?
Many thanks!
I had a very similar problem with my Magic although I don't know if it was downloading 5Mb chunks each time. It was on the stock firmware from Vodafone UK, can't remember if I had rooted at the time ... my Magic was rooted using these instructions: http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting
Just interested to see if you did the same? At one point I had noticed 200Mb of data downloaded within one week ... Voda only allows 500Mb per month in their 'fair use' policy.
I didn't ever fix this but wiped and flashed a different ROM, I've been OK since then. Unfortunately Netcounter does not tell you which apps have been doing the downloading!
I didn't have many apps installed but you know how it is, virtually every app in the market requires internet access for something or another.
Hmmm that sounds very similar to me st0kes.
Left Voda stock rom on, just rooted it to be able to install the htc keyboard and yep i used those instructions you linked to.
Think i will follow your lead and flash to a different ROM this afternoon, thanks for your reply!
How did you go flashing a different ROM Roostlick? Which ROM did you try (URL?).
I rooted my Australian Vodafone Magic the day i got it using the same instructions st0kes mentioned. I didn't replace the 'su' program since i didnt need it and seemed like an unnecessary security risk.
Data usage was fine (normal) for the first 2 weeks. Then it started downloading 4.5mb chunks every 2 hours.
Got close to my 1gig cap, so i turned off all data synchronisation. I have just received my bill today to find the cap was blown.... and that these 4.5mb downloads have continued.
Obviously looking to fix it, since i'm already 400mb through this months cap!!
edit: looked at Settings>About phone>System updates> and i can see "Android Update 1.5" waiting to be installed... no surprises its 4.2mb. I hit "download' on the update and it fails silently after downloading, giving a download prompt again.
Found some more info on the OTA updates in JF's blog here.
I'm currently testing the chmod solution:
./adb shell
chmod 000 /cache/download*
Hi rrfx,
I flashed the phone and installed the rom here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538633
Think it was the 3.6.8 release 4 version.
That seems to of fixed the problem
Roostlick,
You have done everything I did to solve the probelm except after I modified build props I did a factory reset and I have not hit the download button in settings->about phone->system updates since I did the factory reset. I still see the download available but it does not download any more.
Do you have the following info in settings->about phone (shows the build.props has been updated properly)?
Model No. = Android Dev Phone 1
Build = dream_dephone_.......
My phone is rooted as done here: http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.ph...=Magic_Rooting
B.
Hi guys, thanks for the information. I've fixed my phone now... for anyone else with this problem, and unwilling to use a 3rd party ROM... the path I followed from my post above.
JF's chmod 000 *.zip idea didnt work, my Vodafone Magic AU just kept downloading over the top. However using the SDK and logcat gave plenty of info
Code:
./adb logcat
I/SystemUpdateHelper( 63): Started a new update download: http://android.clients.google.com/updates/signed-vfpioneer-CRC1-from-CRB17.7fbab120.zip

W/SystemUpdateHelper( 63): Download system update disappeared.
W/SystemUpdateHelper( 63): Download system update disappeared.
Specifically touching the exact filename in /cache and chmod'ing it 000 didn't work. Suspect the android downloader runs as root and seems to clobber the file anyway:
Code:
touch /cache/signed-vfpioneer-CRC1-from-CRB17.7fbab120.zip
chmod 000 /cache/signed-vfpioneer-CRC1-from-CRB17.7fbab120.zip
(didnt work)
I tried a bunch of other ideas, trawled through bits of the OS code etc. Tried manually downloading and forcing the OTA update.
What worked:
I tried replacing the build.prop file with JF's v1.51. If anyone needs specifics here happy to help.
Rebooted the phone etc, the build version didn't change and the downloads continued. I didn't want to do a factory reset! So left it like this for a couple of days.
This morning, checked the logs and the downloads weren't happening. Odd. Checked the build version and the "dream_devphone" seems to have been read from the build.prop file now! And in system updates "your system is currently up to date". Yay. So perhaps no need to do a factory reset.

[Application] Eris Master Application [R00T] - 6/20/10

This is NOT for those on 2.1 leak. It is ONLY for those on 1.5 Stock or 2.1 OTA OS version.
This is a Windows Only version. We are porting it to JAVA now for cross platform compatibility.
Major update - Re Uploaded the App
We have brought back the Eris Master App as the Android Master App. It has a new name in preparation for support for more Android devices. We are working on fixing the XP bug where files wont download. Until we get a full fix working, DO NOT USE IF YOUR ON WINDOWS XP Stay tuned for updates. We have also included an Error Log handling feature. If there are any errors, it will try to automatically send us an email with the log file. If it cannot send us the email, the log file will pop up for you so you can get in contact with us and send us the log so we can fix the issue.
Again, if you are on Windows XP, DO NOT USE. We have been getting a lot of email logs from those on XP, and we know its not working, so dont bother wasting your time trying to see if it works.
Download the application from here: http://tinyurl.com/2doknnb then run the self extracting .exe zip file, and let it extract to its default location, which is c:\AMA\ then go into the folder there and run the application. Select a ROM to download, and the Root Image, and Recovery Image, then start the downloads.
If you need any support, it is always available on the IRC server.
You can also follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/THE_ECLIPS3
Check the thread and the IRC server for updates.
ECLIPS3 and Jamezelle
- Fixed files not downloading in windows XP a little bit more, full fix in works
- Fixes a few minor bug fixes
- Streamlined the code more
This App is being worked on by ECLIPS3 and Jamezelle
We are now on Google Code. Please visit the page here to let us know of any bugs / errors you get while using the app. It is not meant to help you solve your problem there. That is what this thread or our IRC server is for. The IRC server login info is at the bottom of my signature. A web based IRC server is available through this link.
On step 2, when you get to the part of doing the update. our app will tell you to push volume up to start update. you might also have to push the trackball in as well. the link will say <action> YES. push trackball in to start update.
- Market updates for apps. (coming soon)
We have figured out how to restore apps, and restore market update links, need to roll it into the app, but it is possible. We might even have a way to restore links for those non root. Any other app that does market update links requires root first to backup the links.
UPDATE 5/5/2010
Version 2.1 (released 5/5/2010)
Files are now hosted on http://android.grdlock.net
-Fixed where app wont upload custom rom to phone
-New download links for files
-Ability to download roms via app, instead of including them
-Choose what rom to install easier
-Download of ROOT Image instead of including it
-Progress bar for downloads
-Splash Image install
-Cleaned up a lot of the code
-Many bug fixes
-Made user interaction a lot more friendly
-Fix device not found in app.
-Check if phone is connected to PC. If not, setup will not continue.
-Fixed spelling issue.
We have now finished the core of the Application. What it consists of is a GUI (Graphical User Interface) to make going from 1.5 stock to 2.1 root with a custom ROM installed. There is also an easy way to reboot your phone, enter the recovery mode, and enter the bootloader mode. Finally the third part available in this release is a way to backup all of your applications along with restoring all of them. Currently this is root only. We do have an update coming to backup apps for non root.
For rooting there is a 4 step process. Just go through the steps, one at a time and make sure you read and pay attention to the instructions.
We will be adding more functionality and options to this application. Stay tuned for future updates. If there is an update, just re download the whole app.
Please let us know of any bugs or options you would like to see in the application and we will do what we can to add those in or fix those bugs.
Prereq's for using the application:
You must have Microsoft .NET version 4. Direct Download Link
Then also download the drivers file. Unzip it to your desktop. Follow these instructions on how to install a driver. Select have disc, then navigate to your desktop, inside the corresponding folder, and continue the prompts.
Requests
- Support for other android phones.
- Save Layout and Scenes. (Working on now)
- backup apps for those NOT ROOTED (Have it working. need to roll it into an update)
- Restore email settings for Gmail and HTC Mail (Working on now)
- Download speed for file downloads
- Boot andimations (new name for animations)
- Progress bar for copying files to sdcard
So i tried this out and it works great. It is a really nice addition to the anyones android tool set.
I did notice that once i reinstalled all apps it did take quite a long time to load all of them again... 5 minutes. That was ok though because it saved me alot more time from having to download and install all of them again. I did i reboot too just to make sure.
Thanks a lot for this script!
note: put the scripts in your sdk\tools section on your computer.

Thanks for your feedback. I am working on creating a standalone application for backing up the apps, reinstalling, rebooting, rebooting into bootloader and recovery. It will also be able to install the bootanimation files amongst other things. hopefully i will be able to have it do the rooting process as well. though im not sure how often that will be used considering most have already rooted their phones. if some people would like to vote on those options and let me know what they want as well as requests for other features that would be great.
bootanimation is good and boot image logo like in here, maybe?

Thats not necessarily true, because 'all people' aren't trolling the internet like we are all the time.
So im sure there are people that dont even know we have root access on the eris. I bet there are also a ton of people that dont know what root is and even how to go about it, so an automated system would be a great addition.
Most of the world is not technology oriented. Think of (most)Best Buy shoppers.. hahah (i used to sell computers there) They look for someone to 'deal' with the tech for them.

the rom you ported, its a hero rom? thats probably why because i have found that roms that have been ported from other devices have issues with my scripts, which is because of how the rom and its core are built. will try and add that functionality at some point.
for everyone else. these scripts only are verified to work on eris based roms and legend based roms.

ECLIPS3,
Ok....Well my Eris now has the latest 2.1 ROM and when I ran the program it told me that the ROM installed is older that the one being installed. So if I replace the newer rom in the upload/root folder should I be ok?

Re: [Application] Eris Master Application
Are you on 2.1 leak, 1.5, or 2.1 root? This only works on 2.1. The file in the root folder is the 2.1 root image. In rom folder is custom roms to install. An update will be released today.

Can I download ADT manually

I've been messing around in google app inventor getting an idea for the flow of code and figured that it's time to step up to an actual coding environment.
So I went and downloaded the most recent SDK and eclipse. I installed all the available resources and revisions.
Then i hit a snag. The guide said that in order to properly set up Eclipse i need the ADT plugin. I opened the help menu and went to install new software and clicked on the add button. In the name section i put "ADT Plugin" and in location i put the exact web address they gave and it kept giving an error that said unable to connect to repository... i even tried http over https but still experienced the same issue. I entered the website enter my web browser in hopes that it would connect to a ftp server or start a direct download but unfortunatly it was a google site that was no longer available.
So i want to know if theres a mirror download somewhere that i can manually install to eclipse.
Also my eclipse info

lol - glad to help mate.
Okay just ran into another hitch
I downloaded the zip file and go to install new software but instead of the website i use the archive. It provides me with a list of 3 options
Android DDMS
Android Development Tools
Android Hierarchy Viewer
I put a check in each box and click next it says calculating Dependencies and requirements then i get an error that says
Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found.
Software being installed: Android Development Tools 8.0.1.v201012062107-82219 (com.android.ide.eclipse.adt.feature.group 8.0.1.v201012062107-82219)
Missing requirement: Android Development Tools 8.0.1.v201012062107-82219 (com.android.ide.eclipse.adt.feature.group 8.0.1.v201012062107-82219) requires 'org.eclipse.gef 0.0.0' but it could not be found
Now this has me at a loss. If i downloaded the Archive in theory i shouldn't have to connect to any more sites to install the plugin. I want to know if there is a way to drag and drop the contents of the archive to a plugins folder then open eclipse and refresh the installed plugins in order to show that ADT has been installed.
Not sure if the 64 bit side of things could be an issue (either for you or for anyone), but this guy seems to have solved the same problem...
http://superuser.com/questions/221944/huh-jdk-not-found-on-windows-7-64-bit
Hope it helps mate.
KK ill see if i can follow this and come up with a fix to my issue. not too sure how this will work since im running a 32bit system with windows Vista
I'm still experiencing the same issue with eclipse unfortunately, i even downgraded to Galileo instead of Helios thinking that it was an incompatibility issue with the newest version or the most recent version. I even tried dragging the .JAR files in the ADT zip into the eclipse folder in an attempt to get Eclipse to recognize the plugins without having to install them through the "install new software" dialog.
Everytime I try to connect to the download server it gives me a message that says An exception stack trace is not available. Or Unable to connect to repository http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/content.xml
Connection refused: connect

[Q] So, who wants to help me with this HTC Flyer port?

Got bored, tried to port the flyer rom that the DHD and Inspire 4G has... 70% failure. It boots past the spashscreen, but the bootanimation loops. It doesn't even get done writing "quietly brilliant".. It's more like, "quietly bri" then a blank screen, then boot starts over. and loops. Any idea why? Anyone want the fail of a ROM and wants to help on it? [Note: It's a MASSIVE ROM, about 430 MB].
EDIT: Logcat, for the awesome. http://pastebin.com/vGjzUnYP

Once this fails android will continually try to restart the service till it functions.

E/libEGL ( 9331): eglSetSwapRectangleANDROID:1985 error 3008 (EGL_BAD_DISPLAY)
W/zipro ( 9349): Unable to open zip '/system/etc/customer/bootanimation.zip': No such file or directory
D/PackageManager( 9331): No files in app dir /system/app <--Same as below
D/PackageManager( 9331): No files in app dir /vendor/app <--Phone can't goto setup w/ no apps accessible in /system
The whole booting process just restarts once everything starts dying. I would check on the HW files being used and replace the GPU files(lib.so's). I'll try and help you after you re-upload the file.
I replaced everything from hw already, and even left the stock ones but I get the same result on both. I'm going to take a crack it again, AOSP calmed me down and now I have the energy to go back to Sense

Fix - Apps and websites not working after certificates expire

As identified in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65344931&postcount=10 lots of apps and websites have stopped working over the past year or so (depending maybe on your ROM). This has been traced to the root certificates (used to trust websites and set up secure ssl connctions) becoming out of date. Modern devices also have many more root certificates installed by default.
Note that this doesn't fix the google market on the nook touch, nor the kindle book store. It does fix the kindle app for syncing books purchased elsewhere.
I'll port the instructions over into this post later (see the link above for now). It requires root (so is slightly risky).
If you identify any more failing sites, please provide an https link which fails to open on the nook (but does work on a PC) and I'll add the root authority to my files. Anyone working on ROMs is welcome to redistribute my cacerts.bks

Aargh!

I've been using your updated cacerts.bks file and it is great. In January another certificate expired and I'm fairly confident it's the reason a news app (News Republic) started throwing up security certificate errors and refused to connect with the server. I think I need to be able to do the certificate updates, but I am trying to avoid going down the SDK road (a massive download I will never use for anything else) and all those complexities.
Except, nothing else seems to work. There is an ancient thread in which people discuss various ways to update pre-ICS cacerts. Unfortunately, none of them work--I've tried them all. The browser idea seems promising and Opera Mobile responds as described, but then nothing happens to the cacerts.bks file.
Portecle looks really promising (images below). It can obviously open and inspect the cacerts.bks file (password: changeit). It shows the additions you made and also indicates the expired certificate.
So I went searching for a replacement and found something that seems like the right thing (attached as a zip). It imported easily into Portecle and then appeared along with the new ones you added.
Then I returned the file to the NST and made the permissions the same as the old file. A reboot put me in a loop out of which I just barely managed to recover by inserting my NookManager card at just the right moment.
So I don't get it. The bouncycastle files recommended in the CAcerts wiki for this task are too old to be available. Surprise.
I'm tempted to NOT fix the permissions on the cacerts.bks file when I return it to the NST because I once had a similar problem with a settings.db file and it turned out that restoring the "correct" permissions resulted in a bootloop while leaving them as they were when the file was copied back made it all work just fine. But I'm too timid to try that just now.
Any insights?
From my linked thread,
Download http://www.bouncycastle.org/download...dk15on-146.jar - this is used locally on your PC to manipulate the certificates and needs to be version 146 or 147 to work with android (or old android at least)

It seems that when I used a different version, I got a bootloop. Although the link I referenced seems to have died, the filename still turns up plenty of hits. http://polydistortion.net/bc/download/ for example (version 1.47).
I agree its a lot of pain, and I'm not sure I still have the toolchain download that I used for this work. I'll have a dig around...

Yipes. Well, I downloaded the jar file (many thanks...I did search on the file name and came up empty) and followed your example on the other thread. Everything behaved as it should. Except for the boot loop....... This time it was even harder to get out of it.
Two possibilities come to mind. My JDK is 1.8.0_73. Maybe that's too new to work properly. The other is that the certificate, despite playing nicely as far as console feedback went, is of the wrong format, although this does not show up in the feedback or in Portecle.
Anyway, I'm sufficiently intimidated now that I'm not going back there unless I have a better way of getting out of boot loops (since I'm doing ADB over Wi-Fi).
Edit: temptation... So I went back to the CAcerts Wiki and noticed they suggest Java 6. Now, of course, the Wiki is old, but so is the Java underlying the NST, so I found an install of Java 6 and put it on the laptop we have attached to the TV (which runs Kodi and very little else). Then I repeated the entire procedure with--supposedly--all the right components. Same dreaded bootloop. So either the certificate I have has an incompatible format, or I am just hopeless at this. Maybe both
all of the old bouncy castle api releases are archived on their ftp server under ftp://ftp.bouncycastle.org/pub. i managed to find the .jar files referenced in the other thread on there and updated my cacerts.bks using the cacerts wiki instructions a few days ago. hope it helps you. using the newer release gave me a bootloop as well, but once i grabbed the older version from their ftp all was good!

Which java version were you running?
Edit: Hmm....I'm not having any luck with the link you provided. Using an FTP client I am asked for a logon and in my browser (Firefox) it never connects.
Here we go: http://www.bouncycastle.org/archive/
Remains to be seen if that will do the trick for me...
the bootloop version was whatever bouncycastle.org has as their latest release.
the one i downloaded from the ftp that didn't bootloop was this one: bcprov-jdk16-146.jar
you'll need to ftp in and use the password "anonymous" and some bogus email to get onto the ftp. from that web version of the archive it should be this package: http://www.bouncycastle.org/archive/146/bcprov-jdk16-146.tar.gz
i'm running mac, so my default java was 1.6. i updated to 1.8 but that happened after i got this all up and running already. this was the version that was default:
$ /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Commands/java -version
java version "1.6.0_65"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-468-11M4833)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-468, mixed mode)
so jdk 1.6 + API 146 (or 147?) seems to be the proper mix.
at first i thought it wasn't working, because although i updated the cacerts.bks, the amazon kindle app kept saying "incorrect email/password". took me a while before i read the entire thread and realized that amazon now does two-step authentication so i had to enter the one time passcode they had sent to my email.

Well....progress, or at least I think so. This may be an easier method.
Go to http://www.bouncycastle.org/archive/ and download bcprov-jdk15on-146.jar
Go to https://sourceforge.net/projects/portecle/ and download potecle (an executable jar)
Unzip portecle. Rename the bcprov-jdk15on-146.jar to simply bcprov.jar and copy that into the unzipped portecle folder (overwrite the newer version already present).
To run portecle, just double-click on portecle.jar. You will get a statement about the 146 file being out of date, resulting in not everything working, but enough works for our purposes.
Copy cacerts.bks from your NST (system/etc/security) to your PC, open portecle and import your cacerts file (password is "changeit"). You now have a nice graphical interface for perusing and updating your certificates! If you have a *.cer certificate to update, rename the "cer" to "crt" and use the import function. It's really that simple. I tried it, copied the file back onto my NST, fixed the permissions and.......{drumroll}.......no bootloop I'm running jdk 1.8.x
That's the good news. The bad news is that I did not succeed in updating the entrust certificate. I added three from their website and while they did not break cacerts, they did not restore functionality to NewsRepublic, which is what I was hoping to do
So....this may work. It's certainly easy, but clearly you need to have the correct updated certificate to get the desired result. Duh.
Edit: OK, it's ALL bad news
Don't do any of this. It seems to go OK but yesterday I found I could not successfully open the NPR app. I thought, "well, another one bites the dust", but I was curious so I used SearchMarket to see if the app was still listed for the NST. It was. So maybe it got corrupted somehow? Anyway, I uninstalled it and was going to reinstall from the Market but suddenly I got messages about the download failing. Oh no, not another function going south?!
Well, it's all fine, but the problem was the cacerts.bks file that I had made using the method above. Although there is no bootloop on restart, there is bad ju-ju nonetheless. Restoring my backup of cacerts.bks fixed NPR and SearchMarket. So....don't go there (and the two people who thanked me, feel free to unthank me )
