Awaiting my streak any sign of froyo - Streak 5 General

Ordered my streak on Saturday to replace my HTC desire as I think the 5" screen is superb .. I'm a little worried about dropping from froyo to 1:6 however the benefits outweigh the cons. I've bought a dell direct model so there is no 2.1 which I believe screwed up o2 phones . Question when is froyo lightly to be released ? Varying reports on internet so thought would ask on here .... can't wait for the beast to arrive with car kit
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

The 2.1 update will be soon. I'm running a beta which only has a few bugs but it's worth it. That said, Dell's customisation for 1.6 is actually quite good so it won't be that bad if you want to wait!

I believe so hope dell do decent update not like o2 in the UK did !

From what I read, Google has said that Froyo wasn't designed for large formats so Dell probably has to do a lot more work to make a version work on the Streak, which means delays.

I think what they meant by large formats was larger resolution. Since the streak and many other devices are WVGA (480x800) i think we're fine.
Where the problem lies with the streak is the density. The streak utilizes High Density (260) HDPI so the streak can fit in more information for the 5" screen as opposed to the EVO (and other wvga devices) which are Medium Density (160) MDPI.
2.2 (froyo) supports our resolution and our screen density however many developers are overlooking this by not adding the proper resources for HDPI devices, which causes some apps to not appear/draw properly on our screens (see [urlhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773233]this thread for more info and screen shots[/url]
Developers need to add the proper resources for our screens density, more information can be found on android's developer sight, particularly this article concerning supporting multiple screens
Overall most apps work just annoying when you get those that dont.
There is a way to change the density of our devices to MDPI but then you loose screen real estate and it'll be like having a blown up version of MDPI and no need for the 5" screen.

Thanks for that, it makes sense of what I'd read previously.

Are you referring to the o2 2.1 or the dell 2.1 that you are running now?

Or did he mean to type 2.2 which is froyo. I'm gonna hit up @dellcares and @lionelatdell on twitter to see what they got to say about froyo for us in the US

@lionelatdell is still saying they are going to go direct to 2.2 in the US

And I hope the UK devices will be able to use that update as well!

Petition for Stock Android.

Should we make a petition for Dell to give the option at least for stock android to be installed on Dell Streak as a form of update ?
Considering the rumours that Android 3.0 will be split in 2 forms and might focus on tablets and such, we could cut months of waiting time.
I'm for stock here. Can't be doing with these mods from dell and htc, rather make android better. I don't by a pc and get DELLS version of windows. I understand why, but the reason is gone as android is better.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
You can have my vote if you think it will work
I installed ADW launcher on my streak and it now looks rather more stock than before. So I can live with non-stock provided that:
1. You can turn it off or replace it
2. It doesn't delay the rollout of new firmware releases
Sent from my lovely big screened beast using XDA App
As I understand it, the US version will only come through AT&T. You'll not get a stock version there but rather a crippled version that may be difficult to update and so far no AT&T sold android device has ever seen an update, none. This is a very important issue being kept from view by Dell. I think we should petition, should be very noisy about this issue. If Dell does not sell direct, as the Nexus 1 was sold, we may NEVER see an update in any quarter of any year.
I agree, just got my dell streak and I love it. Coming from the nexus one and used to getting first dibs on upgrades to waiting for dells unnecessary add on is gonna be a pain in the butt. Can't we root and install just android, actually any word if the kernel is released?

im sure people will make roms and upgrades that are clean or follow the path of a different phone. i want one with htc sense. itll be interesting to see whats done.

Bigger numbers isn't always better.

While we are all bored waiting, Let's have a thread that list all froyo 2.2 problems instead. let's see if you can find them too! a good time to look into what happen to their "merrier" upgraded user.
1st one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDt1Mt6sdes Wifi keep dropping! @least on droid X
2nd It seem large amount of apps are not yet froyo compatible! Check your local market app for details.

Yes, agree. I would say SE programmer has done a good job compared to HTC. HTC might be fast to release new firmware but their firmware is not stable and have many bugs.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I would have to agree, while HTC does get updates out fast and SE kinda picks there own asses, they certainly did a damn good job on 1.6. Which is why even tho I am a little angry with the delay, I give them the benefit of the doubt that 2.1 will be all that and a bag of chips. People who sold there X10's will be crying to get them back when 2.1 drops lol
suckers! lol
I read somewhere that LG is delaying its tablet release because froyo is not stable enough, and is waiting for the next android release.

Certainly the Eclair update will give new life to X10, but the lack of Flash for web browsing, I think it is a big handicap.
I hope that flash_for_21.apk works on Xperia.
come on everyone while we are all bored, let's fine some problems that these 2.x face on their devices. While i am pretty sure 1.6 has all been stable to all of us right now. We should show them bigger numbers isn't always better!
Especially someone runs in the trouble exchange an x10 for a new phone get an update and it bricks forever XD
Why are people so interested in 2.2 for x10i, it does not differ so much out of 2.1
The biggest difference between 2.1 and 2.2 is:
Improved system performance
The integration of Adobe Flash 10.1
Wi-Fi hotspot
Optimized Android keyboard
Keep apps and games on SD card
App backup settings (S/E has their own)
Auto-update apps in market (Google has updated the market for all platforms)
well system performance is GOOOOD
flash well don't you want to watch videos online? and not just from youtube
(you can' see it on the x10 http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/103574/sexual-harassment-law )
wi-fi spot could work sometimes
Actually I personally just want to update the phone bios(what it call). Not the OS. Let's see... Nothing wrong with Android 1.6 , the problems are: earpiece (low call volume) and real time push email. At least this is my opinion. How ever.... X10 is much better than x2. Agree?
Gunawan, GN Mutimedia & X10i
Windows 98 works pretty well but it doesn't mean I want to stay on that OS because there may be a few minor quirks with newer OS's.
There's no two ways about it - waiting for 2.1 is miserable and depressing. I can't afford a new phone anymore so I'm stuck just like a lot of other disappointed X10 consumers.

There will always be a bug of some sort no matter how much time they spend on it. But, I like many others am frustrated with the delay...but just give them the benefit of the doubt that 2.1 will be damn near flawless. They are claiming that there 2.1 update will be on par or better than 2.2 (read it somewhere). 2.2 is not any better than 2.1 (well for my use anyways) I don't use flash, I installed it and then deleted it. Overall system performance was NO better than 2.1 (this was with my Nexus One)...browser speed had NO sigificant change regardless of there claiming. So guys don't sell or trade your phones because of SE trying to give us a damn good experience with 2.1....when 2.1 drops then make your call on what your gonna do with the phone....besides with 2.1 installed on it already, you will probably get more $$$ for it lol

Streak on 2.2 outperforms most competition

I just wanted to post a couple of links with recent reviews of Dell Streak running on official (un-tweaked) Froyo build. In most cases Streak outperforms Iphone 4, HTC EVO, Samsung Epic 4G or itself running on Android 1.6
While the official build is not perfect, it certainly gave the Streak a well deserved and anticipated power boost and now many reviewers take notice. The Streak happens to be the most practical and entertaining consumer portable internet device right now. With a few bits of marketing genius this could be the ultimate game changing device. Once you get people off the mindset of looking at it as some sort of super-sized phone and instead look at it as the most portable tablet (sorry galaxy tab but one can't really carry you around w/out some sort of bag) then you know that you have a peace of design masterpiece. Only those who don't really know what they're missing will dismiss this incredible device as something that I just noted the previous sentence.
So here are the two reviews, let's continue to work on developing more tweaks to make our Streaks even better.

Possible next upgrade to streak

Hi folks,
I have a month left on my contract and looking at the streak or the DHD and it would be great if you guys who have the streak can leave your thoughts on why you chose it and what you like about it. The 'issue' I have at the moment is the way of charging it, not by USB. Ok its a small issue but I tend to have a charger connection at work and home just in case so would need to purchase another one (more expense lol)
The other thing is development as there only seems to be the one custom rom for it (please tell me if I am wrong).
So, benefits, nice massive screen is always good (coming from a Hero) and from what I have read its quite nippy too (has it the newer snapdragon or the older one?)
It either this or the DHD
Do a search mate there are lots of threads on people asking the same question and as far as development only Steve is doing it right now and he does a dam good job, one of the problems with development is Dell have not released the Source code until they do Steve can only do so much but he has done a lot better than dell.

Yeh I did a search but nowt. So, Dell are not releasing the source code? I thought this was against Googles rules?
I like HTC because theyre pretty good with updates and support and what not. What I don't like about their products is that theyre all nearly identical. As soon as they release a "ground breaking" product, they release another one that slightly tops it a month later.
I like the streak because theres no hardware (the screen) out there like it. Pair that with front cam, snapdragon, nice battery, and you have specs that rival the top of the game. Although the 1.6 os (for AT&T) is a joke, and theres only streakdroid as a custom rom, I find the streak community very supportive.
Streak is the best! Its only gonna get better as development increases. Get one, you should be able to return it within a month if you don't like it. Once you get used to the size, you can't go back. I never use my netbook anymore...
How many times in a day do you streak owners hear "Wow! Is that your phone!? Can i see it?"

Lemme summerize what ppl have been sayiing and how I feel about the streak. Amazing phone, obivously biggest advantage is the big screen, and trust me when I tell u this, when you go soooo big u won't be able to go back to 3.7 inches.
The biggest problem with the phone, the camera. If you are a camera person, do not get this phone. this is not to say the camera is crap, but its pretty bad for 5mp.
People have been telling me that they drop their phone and it wasn't a high drop and the screen broke, I drop my phone really hard on the bare ground from 4 feet high and nothing happened (alittle scartch on the back, nothing on the screen) regardless of what happens I have also heard dell will replace it without a big hassel.
I used an iPhone before this phone, and I like this phone better. I have many requests to trade phones from random strangers on the street when they see me using the phone, iPhone 4 users too. So if for some reason you don't like the phone I am sure it wont be hard to trade it up.

Get one man. I went from the iPhone 3g,S,4, HD2, Desire, EVO, and now this. I'm loving this bad boy. It puts the web and everything else in motion man. This screen is the biz. Couldn't wait so using BestBuy/ att locked version until my Dell unlocked comes in. My 30 days will be up on Feb 6 but phone supposed to be here by the 3rd! If not, will be returning this armed then buying it again to start a new 30 days. So wrong, but am I gonna do? Use my wifes Craptivate or the 3.5 iPhone sitting in my drawer? Nope. Can't wait for some Froyo goodness. I digressed some.

Thanks for the replies folks, I am hearing good things from both sides (my other option is the DHD) so if my provider will offer a test run then I will give both of them a whirl and judge that way. I am loving the screen size though. Its ideal. Just worried about development for it. Seems only one guy on the case?
Yeah but he's amazing we already have better that stock version of 2.2 running no problems. When I had stock my quadrant score was 800s now its 1500s and no overclocking.

As other have said on here the Streak IMHO is probably the best device out there.
DJ_Steve may be the only person cooking a ROM for this thing but if he quit tomorrow i know that the 1.6.1 ROM that i'm running will be better than anything Dell ever puts out for this phone.
That being said if i had to choose another device i would probably got for the HTC Infuse on AT&T, which is the Desire HD for you. Same device, just different name.
Although, i'm biased, go with a Streak. You won't be sorry!

I love the Streak. It is insane how great it is and how much I love showing it off.
The only thing in the pipeline now that I would consider instead of the Streak would be the new Motorola ATRIX. A seriously high-end dual-core processor phone would be a step up, I think. But other than that, there isn't much out there to get excited about.

For those considering HTC Titan vs. Galaxy Note as Streak replacement

The only arguable point I see is if you prefer windows or android...

I'm also looking forward to the HTC Holiday. It has a 4.5 inch screen and will run AT&T's LTE network.
I think the main obsticle standing in the way of Android, iOS and even WindowsPhone at the moment is the inability to natively print or offer true USB hosting, regardless of the device (tablet or smartphone). If Microsoft can develop an OS with these two missing features that can run on a smartphone, tablet and a PC, they will have a winner on their hands (IMO)

The Titan is very "meh". Honestly, I think the Note might not be enough of an upgrade in size. I want 6 inches. Galaxy Tab 7" fits fine in my slacks.
"The HTC Titan is fitted with a 4.7-inch S-LCD display which operates at a resolution of 480 x 800 and offers up a pixel density of 199ppi.
The quality of the display can't really be called into question, as it's of a generally high standard but the size may put some folk off.
The Samsung Galaxy Note boasts an enormous 5.3-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen which features a resolution of 800 x 1280 and a pixel density of 285ppi,"

I love my streak, but the Windows phone 7 is buttery smooth & very slick. That is before Mango is finally pushed out. I installed the beta2 mango on my Dell Venue Pro and thought, "THis is simply a SICK OS!" I'm probably going to switch over to the Titan once it's released.
I'm really interested in knowing what software the Windows phone 7.5 mango will use for the face to face video chat. The titan has a FFC (Front Facing Camera) at 1.5mp, and the rear is 8mp, if I"m correct.
THAT is going to be SICK!
WP7 has not been the success Microsoft thought it would be and Android is cleaning their clock.
Will this Mango change that??
If it is advertised maybe. I have yet to see anyone with a WP7 device. Microsoft lost a lot of customers when the ended support for WM. They lost those customers to iPhone and android devices. Personally it will be hard for me to consider going back.
Except there is this...
http://mobilitydigest.com/wp7-running-ie9-smashes-the-iphone/
Like if the phone will run the a complete version of ie9 that is totally awesome and will result in my recommending devices that run WP7 Mango for use at work. We have been waiting a long time for a full version of ie on a mobile device.
I have the streak now, and the galaxy note is looking real promising, i cant wait for it to come out

How do you get around without Adobe Flash?
The IE9 version on WP7 Mango is not the full version of the browser. It currently is not slated to support Flash and it doesn't do full active x either. I will need both those items before I can consider it for our needs at work let alone replacement of my streak.

"As far as the Samsung Galaxy Note release date goes, it has bee announced that the smartphone/tablet hybrid will be available before the end of 2011 in some Nordic countries while UK and US will probably get it sometime during 2012."
At least they have narrowed it down to a release year.
