I am on the fence about getting Tasker. I wanted to automate Wifi and notification sounds turning off/on and was going to get Tasker, but I found an app called Timeriffic and it does a good job. But I still like the level of customization afforded by Tasker.
MY question is this - if anyone has been using it on their G2 for a while, have you noticed any performance degradation? Also, noob question - what happens when you get an update or something? Do you have to pay again?
1. I've been using it for 2 weeks and I haven't noticed a drop a performance but I huge jump in efficiency
2. If there is an update you will not have to pay for the application again and all the profiles you have created will still be there.
Its definetly one of my favorite apps, I use it all the time. Once you buy it from the market updates are free, and it does not slow down your phone.

Thanks, guys. I think I'll go ahead and get it.

I've been using it since the first week it came out. I have no problems with it. Definitely one of my top-5 apps.
I've been using Tasker for two weeks now. I really like it and have noticed very little performance drop, if any. Buy it directly from their website and it's a few dollars cheaper than the Android Market. The program will check for updates itself every so often.
Make sure to read the Wiki; there are some good profiles on there.
Like the one that texts you back with a Google Maps link to where your phone is located. Was able to get rid of those crappy lost phone programs.

Hello all, I'm trying to help my brother decide on a new verizon phone. I'm stuck with at&t and own a captivate, so I'm familiar with the development community over there. However, I'm a little more clueless with this neck of the woods. Although I've enjoyed my captivate, I'm actually trying to push him to get the Droid X instead of the Fascinate (I thought he would enjoy the bigger screen and a better customer support?).
1. First, is there anything he should be aware of that might give him problems with the Droid X (hardware/software concerns--akin to the troublesome gps of the galaxy s line)?
2. He primarily wants a smart phone to help out his business (a small machine shop) so he can check emails and whatnot. Along with this his biggest request was to be able to use the mobile hotspot function without paying verizon for it (aside from the phone's $30 unlimited data). So my questions for this are:
a. From what I've gathered in the last day, is that he needs to root and install an app like "wireless tether" or something like that. Is the simplest way to root by installing z4root?
b. Is there anything else he needs to do besides the root and the tether app?
c. Is there any risk that verizon could figure out he's tethering a computer while not paying for the service?
Thanks for any help and clarifications. I appreciate any other comments if you'd recommend a different phone (Fascinate or Incredible)--I know, this is in the Droid X forum, but I thought I'd ask anyway.
Z4root is way easy to use, just install and hit one button and you're done. Wireless tether app works well but occasionally it pauses while in sleep mode. Awakening the phone resolves this issue. I also use baranacle wifi tether which seems to have this issue alot less. I'm sure Verizon can guess that you're using a tether app if you use alot of data, but I use far beyond the average amount of data and they have yet to say anything or attempt to charge me extra. I haven't tried the fascinate or incredable so I wouldn't be able to say how they compare to the x but I have been very happy with the performance of mine. Its very snappy and hasn't let me down yet. Oh and I don't use that much GPS so I would also not be able to give you a definitive answer to that as well.

Awesome, thanks! It's good to know that it's pretty simple to do, especially since my brother doesn't have any experience in modding things like this (that's why he turns to his more savvy--nerdier--younger brother).
The GPS was just an example I used to refer to the much maligned failure of the Galaxy S line. I was just wondering if the X had any similar types of downfalls that he should be aware of before being let down later.
Other than the locked bootloader, I've been pretty happy with my DX. And since installing the Liberty 1.5 ROM last Friday, I've been SUPER happy with it. It's a very nice phone, and pretty speedy.
+1 on liberty 1.5, great rom.

I have a Verizon Tab and I dont care about being able to use it on Verizon. I am only using the wifi to connect to the internet.
Am I able to use any ROM seeing that I dont care about the internet working?
any ideas? i am interested in this as well

No, I see about 90 people have viewed this but there has been no answer.
I am not a Dev and lack a lot of skills needed to make a custom ROM.
Bit if I understand things right. All the Tabs are the same exept for the radio that is used to access the internet on a network.
But other than that all hardware is the same, so other ROMs should work just not allow you to use the internet.
I for one am using just using Wifi so I would like to be able to use some of the other ROMs.
Wow
There is still no real answering this?Up
I use my Evo and wife only for internet on my tab. It would be great if I could use any Rom out there .

I was asking a developer this yesterday, he said if you take a Gsm rom and run it it will not run properly. As you are aware the radio will not work which you said is not a concern but other things will become an issue like your device being seen as a Cd drive. The frame work is totally different. If you are cool with Heidmall and have the stock Verizon image files go ahead and try it. doing major back ups of your current config. If its not working the worst thing is you will have to reapply the stock image and start over with your back ups.
CM7 for our tabs is in the works if you can wait it out a bit longer. Im not sure exactly what you expect to get from another rom??
Really I'm just looking for a little more speed and better battery life.
To me the Tab is still the best out there due to size and form factor.
But playing Anger Birds with wifi on seems to make my tab a little slower and lag.

Khasmek's Rom and kernel do wonders for the cdma tab
There was somebody who tried a while back..I'm looking around now..but imo its not worth the risk when the performance is already available and tested

Do you have Verizon or Sprint GT?
I can tell you there are differences. I tried to get the sprint tab running CwM using the verizon bootstrap method and my tab is borked. Completely unresponsive except for the BSOD the phone ! pc graphic. I am pretty sure I could fix with odin but I dont have a pc. I am on vacation with my macbook pro and I think I am really gonna be screwed when the battery dies.... Anyone have a solution to this?
I have nothing to support this, but I have "survived" the "phone ! pc" and I *suspect* that the "phone ! pc" has to do with low battery (or some minimal power needed, even for download mode.)
In my experience, I *had* a fully charged tab when I've seen this, so it may be some misreading, somehow. I've forced myself to take a deep breath, plug into a wall charger and walk away for ~hour. After this, I can get it to Download Mode, and reflash with stock image. Scary and random, but I think it's meant as a symbol/message to have the device *fully* charged for attempting flashing, etc.
Again, this is theory only, but I've seen that screen 2x on both a sprint & verizon tab, and patience has won the day. Good luck.

The phone...!...pc mode is like a backup download mode. From here, you can flash using odin or heimdall.
Just want to share.
I just updated my Archos 101IT from 2.1.08 to 2.3.20.
Before the update I already rooted my device using Archangel.
I was expecting that the root will be lost after the update but to my suprise its still rooted even after
rebooting several times.
I tried using apps that needs root access and its still working.
I checked the version of my firmware and its 2.3.20.
I can now use the new features of the new firmware.
Specially the proxy supports which I really need.

Did you upgrade manually or over the air?
I updated manually.
I downloaded the updates from Aarchos site then rebooted nt A101IT.
I enterred the recovery menu. Then choose update firmeware.
Transfered the AOS from Archos afterwards it started updating the system.

I still have root as well after upgrading. But my 101 has become extremely slow waking up and battery is dying in less than a few hours in standby where it used to last for a couple of days.
I lost root after screen hung up and device rebooted itself.
Im not really experiencing any slowness after sleep mode but tha battery life sure drains a lot faster. Now i have to charge ny 101 everyday. I wonder what could be the cause of this drain...

Maybe someone could info sauron or others (urukdroid) developers about this?
Maybe they could work better with this information on future hacks/cracks/roms??
Others may have already share this info.
All I need now is a fix for the battery drain issue.

Wait until the update from archos
I think Xda-Devs dont know much about the batteries in our gen8 so wait..wait....wait........
@minxwin:
If you have a batteriedrain, some process stops your tablet from going to deepsleep.
You should cgeck if you for ex. have syncing on, as this stops wifi from sleep and really sucks batterie.
I've been monitoring my device since I upgraded. Still can't find the cause of the battery drain. Hopefully someone would found out and share the solution to us.

I am wondering if Archos really only fixed this by accident. I was able to get archangel to work again using 2.3.20. It seems that the wifi network you connect to can't have network shares disabled.
I found that every time I connect to a network with shares disabled, but if they are enabled I get root. It's possible that with the pemanent root option checked that you might need to reboot.
Disclaimer: prior to finding this out I had been testing using the psneuter exploit to enable this feature, so I don't know if all my testing somehow made this work or not.
To start this off, I want to say that this is an awesome community full of great people willing to help others. It takes this sort of open source sharing to come together for the greater good. That is why I want to make a thread to document my experiences so that it may help others and myself.
As of yesterday, I started using froyo 2.2.2 by joshkoss. This update is probably the best of all of them and I like it much better than 2.2.1, which is what I previously had installed. Having said that, there are still some problems, which I almost find enjoyable to discover how to fix.
Throughout most of my updates, my GPS has been slow to connect. Finally on 2.2.2 it is impossible to establish a connection and everytime I turn on GPS it always asks me to 'Accept' or 'Cancel' the agreement. I've never had this happen before. Anyone know what to do about that?
Beyond this issue, I wanted to try this fix by ciscogee. I have gotten all the way to the point on ADB tools that in my cmd prompt I can type 'adb devices' to show me my devices serial number. For me, it ends there. As soon as I can figure out how to do this fix step by step for a beginner I will type it out in this thread. I am using Android SDK.
Another problem with this 2.2.2 update is that my banking app no longer works and it force closes right after start up. Then when I try to send a report, that also force closes. It worked on 2.2.1 so Im sure it has something to do with it.
So as of right now this is where I'm at. I hope I can help some people out with their Continuum. I just dont have the detailed knowledge of the inner workings to really bring something to the table, but I hope to at least help someone else out and learn something in the process.
My Wells Fargo app quit working when I switched over to EC07 and I haven't been able to pinpoint what the problem is. I posted my problems in another thread, but basically I had several apps that were FCing when I tried to use them. I did logcat on them, and based on the errors I got from there, I think is has something to do with the apps trying to access data either over 3G or wifi.
Never got any further than that though.
That's weird. Did you have problems reporting the failure? Ill have to try out that log app and see what I can find out. Hopefully ill have something later today.
Anyone else have problems with a banking app? Mine is comerica bank.

I tried the hacked browser and it didn't change anything on my phone. Both the stock browser and TB's hacked one FC as soon I tried load a page.
One thing I did notice though, was that the browser would let me surf the web just fine. It was when I tried to log into any account; Wells Fargo, Google, etc.,that it would FC. Don't know if that means anything or not. Wonder if it is the same reason some banking apps aren't working. Could it have something to do with using secure connections?
Just a thought.

I get what you're saying about the force close on secure connections. Ive only had a force close on one bank app. Never online through the web browser such as dolphin.
Was the hacked browser an internet browser?
Yep, my Wells Fargo app doesn't work either.

Ok, after reading some old posts, I think I may have found a connection with the FC issues and certain apps. It seems that there were alot less FC problems when using the EC03 baseband vs. the EC06 baseband.
Does anyone know what the differences are between the two?
I've said it before, but; I don't know much about programming, language, kernals, etc. but I can see patterns. And what I have seen is that most of the apps with FC problems are trying to access network data, and alot of those seem to be secure connections (such as banking apps). Someone said before that it is hard to know what the real problem is because everyone uses different apps, but I have seen the same apps listed as causing problems with several different users here over and over again. So that makes me think that there is an underlying problem causing these issues.
Like I said, I don't know much, but this seems like the problem to me, and if these clues make something, somewhere, inside someone's brain click that actually does know something about this, then maybe I helped a little bit.

If that's the case, it sounds like a problem with ssl. I wonder if a fascinate baseband would fix it. Trailblazer proved that a fascinate baseband would work on our phones a few months ago
