A little introduction
Recently in several Android fora on XDA-Developers, it has come to the attention of the moderator team that there have been issues regarding developers’ compliance with the GPL. This post aims to clarify the position of XDA on the use of GPL sources, particularly in the development of Android kernels.
Without the GPL, the Android operating system would likely never have come about. Through the work of Linus Torvalds, the Linux kernel was made open source for all to use, share and modify. As Android runs on the Linux kernel, and features numerous modifications to these sources, it would not exist in its present state without the Open Source community.
As a result, it is in the interests of everyone who owns an Android phone, who wishes to see further development on the platform, to ensure that they play their part in upholding both the letter and spirit of the GPL.
The GNU General Public Licence (also known as the GPL) is available to read in full at www.gnu.org
To make it easy for everyone to spot a release that complies with the GPL mark the title of your release thread with [GPL]. If you find a ROM which does not comply with the GPL, or the developer does not issue sources, you can report the post as usual, using the report post button next to the post number. Alternatively you may PM your forum specific moderator.
The Rules as they apply on XDA
As XDA has no legal power to uphold the GPL (and frankly we want to stay as far away from doing so as possible), we can’t force any of our users to abide by the GPL. However it is in XDA’s interests as well as the interests of our developer-base to ensure all GPL-derived materials hosted or linked on XDA comply fully with the GPL.
GPL-derived materials that do not come with the complete sources used to compile the GPL components are considered warez, and will be treated as such under forum rule 6 and 9.
If you use GPL components, but do not make any modifications to them whatsoever, you should provide a link to the original source of your GPL code.
Sources accompanying a release should be complete, and contain all the necessary source code for any modules, scripts or definition files. Complete sources will be defined as those which compile correctly and completely against the platform for which the software is distributed, and which contain any and all modifications made to the released General Public Licenced code. The source code supplied should be the exact version for which the source code is being requested, complete with all modifications.
EXAMPLE: Here’s a bit of code that could be used as a template to post your releases
<Kernel Or Author Name> <Kernel Nr>:
<Source>|<ReadMe>|<Credits>|<Other>The Very Quick Summary of General Public License (GPL)
The text of the GPL Licence itself will be used to reach any final conclusion regarding any disputes over GPL Licenced materials. The above is a summary of what XDA expects of members using GPL code, and the complete text can be read at the GNU website.
The GPL states that anyone who modifies GPL licenced code is required to make available the sources used to compile it. This is to further improve and encourage collaborative work, as well as to ensure that the best code possible is produced, and to encourage peer-review of all work. This benefits both developers and end users in numerous ways, including:
Allowing anyone to verify the code they are trusting with their data, and its authenticity
Encouraging community collaboration to produce faster fixes and updates, and better code
Helping bring new developments from other devices and fields to your own, letting you benefit from new code that wouldn’t have been available without this sharing.
The GPL imparts great freedom for GPL end users. It ensures innovation is never stifled and no project is dependent upon any single developer.
It is in everyone’s interest for the GPL to be adhered to, as it gives us all better ROMs, better transparency, and a better atmosphere for developers to work together to make great code.
Consider this thread your one place to chat, moan and guess when the jelly bean update will come out, or anything else related to jellybean on the SGS3.
I need everyones help to keep this thread somewhat sane, report any trolling or flaming and don't respond to it.
All other threads on this topic will be closed.
Keep all your posts in this thread polite and make sure you follow the rules. I have bolded a few points.
For all your JB OTA needs, see this thread
1. Search before posting.
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.
2. Member conduct.
2.1 Language: XDA is a worldwide community. As a result what is ‘ok’ to say in your part of the world may not be ok in someone else’s part of the world. Please think about who is reading what you write. Keep in mind that what you think of as acceptable use of language may not be acceptable to others. Conversely, while reading member posts, remember that word you find offensive may not be to the writer. Tolerance is a two way street.
2.2 Nudity: XDA is used by people of all ages, including minors. It's not acceptable to post nude/pornographic imagery, which includes exposure of the male or female genitalia or of female breasts.
2.3 Flaming: XDA was founded as a group of people sharing information about certain mobile phones. Sharing does not involve virtual yelling (flaming) it does involve working together to solve problems in an environment of mutual respect and understanding. Losing your temper and flaming another member, or group of members, is not acceptable behavior.
2.4 Personal attacks, racial, political and/or religious discussions: XDA is a discussion forum about certain mobile phones. Mobile phones are not racial, political, religious or personally offensive, therefore none of these types of discussions are permitted on XDA.
2.5 Courtesy towards other Members: Treat new members the way you would like to have been treated when you were a new member. When dealing with any member, provide them with guidance, advice and instruction when you can and always with respect and courtesy. Never post in a demanding, argumentative, disrespectful or self-righteous manner.
2.6 All members are expected to read and adhere to the XDA rules.
3. Post only using a clear subject and message.
You're most likely to receive a helpful answer to your question if you use a short subject title that describes your problem and a message that explains in detail what your problem is and what you've tried to solve it.
4. Use the English language.
We understand that with all the different nationalities not everyone speaks English well, but please try. If you're really unable to post in English use an online translator, You're free to include your original message in your own language below the English translation.
5. Post a message only once.
As a large forum we don't need unnecessary clutter, You're free to edit your message as you like, so if you do not receive an answer revisit your message and see if you can describe your problem better. Not everyone is online at the same time, it might take a while before you receive an answer.
6. Do not post warez.
If a piece of software requires you to pay to use it, then pay for it. We do not accept warez nor do we permit any member to promote or describe ways in which Warez, cracks, serial codes or other means of avoiding payment, can be obtained. This is a site of developers, i.e. the sort of people who create such software. When you cheat a software developer, you cheat us as a community
7. Do not spam.
If you wish to advertise a product, contact us we provide ads. But do not post it in the forums, it will be removed and you're likely to receive a ban.
You are however allowed to sell used goods like your own device, parts of your device or accessories for your device in the marketplace forum, please read the rules there before posting. (This rule includes signatures, if you use a signature it will appear in your post)
8. Donations.
We appreciate all donations to xda-developers.com, it keeps our forum online and well maintained. As a user you're allowed to ask for donations in your signature as a thank you for your hard work. However donations up front are not allowed, this forum is about sharing, not about getting paid to do something, that's what your job is for.
9. Don't get us in trouble.
Don't post copyrighted materials or do other things that will obviously lead to legal trouble. If you wouldn't do it on your own homepage, you probably don't want to do it here either. This does not mean we agree with everything the software piracy lobby try to impose on us, it simply means you cannot break any laws here, since we'll end up dealing with legal hassle caused by you. Please use common sense: respect the forum, its users, and those that write great code.
10. Help others if you can.
If you see posts from others where you can help out, please do. This place exists because people are helping each other, and even if you are relatively new to the matter, there's probably already quite a few people newer than you that would benefit from what you've learned. Don't be shy.
11. Don’t post with the intention of selling something.
Don’t use XDA to advertise your product or service. Proprietors of for-pay products or services, may use XDA to get feedback, provide beta access, or a free version of their product for XDA users and offer support, but not to post with the intention of selling. This includes promoting sites similar/substantially similar to XDA-Developers.com.
Do not post press releases, announcements, links to trial software, or commercial services. unless you’re posting an exclusive release for XDA-Developers.com.
Encouraging members to participate in forum activities on other phone related sites is prohibited.
Off-site downloads are permitted if the site is non-commercial and does not require registration.
Off-site downloads from sites requiring registration are NOT encouraged but may be permitted if the following conditions are met:
A) the site belongs to a member of XDA-Developers with at least 1500 posts and 2 years membership who actively maintains XDA-Developers' support thread(s) / posts, related to the download,
B) the site is a relatively small personal website without commercial advertising/links (i.e. not a competitor forum-based site with purposes and aims similar to those of XDA-Developers.com.)
12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, you MUST first seek their permission, and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If a dispute occurs about who developed / created a piece of work, first try to settle the matter by private message and NOT in open forum. If this fails then you may contact a moderator with clear evidence that the work was created by you.
Convincing evidence will result in copied work being removed. If there is no clear evidence you created the work then in the spirit of sharing all work will remain posted on the forums.
As an addition, developers have the right to hold exclusivity over their work for as long as it is deemed necessary by the dev or freely share it. However, if the work is claimed as exclusive, it must remain as such. No selective sharing will be allowed (ie allowing certain people to use it and not others). Should the dev decide to start sharing the work with others, the work automatically becomes fair game for all to use.
In regards to permissions, same rules remain for this but if permission was already given, unless there is a very valid reason, it cannot be revoked (same applies to major updates on the work). Under that same premise, permissions cannot be denied unless the work is exclusive or under severe circumstances.
In plain English: If you want to keep your work exclusive, go for it. However, if you are going to share your work, do it fairly.
These rules apply to all software posted on XDA (including but not limited to ROMs, RUUs, apps, games, kernels, themes, icons, etc) unless that software comes with a license that waives these rules.
13. Advertising and Income Generation
Commercial advertising, advertising referral links, pay per click links and other income generating methods are forbidden. Do not use xda-developers as a means to make money.
14. Create only one User Account
You are allowed one User Account at xda-developers. If you create additional accounts, Moderators will disable them and your original account may also be disabled or infracted.
15. Keep posts/threads on-topic
Whilst a minor amount of off-topic posting may be overlooked, the general rule is your posts / threads must be relevant to the Forum / thread in which you are posting.
16. Bumping Threads (posting simply to force a thread to the top of the thread queue)
Do not "bump" a thread more than once per 24 hours.

Nice!
I'll start. I dont think JB for our devices will show today for some reason. I think it will be a week or 2 yet.
Somehow,i have the same feeling about this also...
But i'll just keep checking the forums...LIKE A MADMAN!
As much as I'd love it if the update comes on the 29th I won't hold my breath. Updates never seem to happen when they are rumoured to be happening unfortunately.
I could be wrong but I can't personally remember any that came out on the date they were rumoured other than Apple crap that is released on known dates
Hi everyone. Wanted to know..will I lose my pictures and other files if I upgrade to Jellybean?

Unless you choose to do a factory reset then no.
However, as always with updating firmware, always back your stuff up. You never know!
Thanks for this sticky lets keep the boards clean
On topic: I'll be checking for JB tomorrow in case the rumors are true, here's hoping (watch an ICS update come with a version number similar to the JB leaks just to troll us)
Good idea with the thread :good:
I was getting a little frustrated with all the "Jellybean update now!" threads that had me thinking it had arrived!
I am looking forward to it though, I'm guessing within the next few weeks...
I've played around with a couple of the leaked JB ROMs, but I'm currently going through a phase of enjoying a completely stock experience, so I'm eager for JB to arrive.
Good job, admin! The SGS3 forum desperately needed some cleaning up! Try going over to the HTC One X forums. Theirs is all clean!
I've heard that the Stock JB for Galaxy S3 I9300 will be released today. But nothing came out but the Latest Leaked Version: LH8...
What's happening????(((((
I'm currently running LH8, seems pretty stable. Only one issue found so far AllShare Cast is on and if I try to turn it off it turns Wifi off as well. Turn Wifi back on and AllShare turns back on as well.
With Touchwiz I can now add apps to folders inside the app drawer without it pooping itself everytime (seemed to be a common issue with the other JB's)

seriously, theirs is clean because they are all currently enjoying 4.0.4
I love the fact that samsung is now really working hard to bring us the best possible flavor of jelly bean. If I remember, there were not much leaks for ICS. Overall, I am loving the improvements.
We are waiting JB and we will get it soon. Whats after JB?

After Jelly Bean comes Android 4.2.0 Kush Bush. :fingers-crossed:
Currently, the AOSP Jelly Bean now has too many bugs. Some Apps cannot run smothly. Example: Facebook - sometime force close, Fruit Ninja - a bit lag and has some force close when we stop the game,... I Hate those Force Close stuffs:|

It's official from today but it will be pushed within next days, so have a little patience. After a month you won't remember if it was We or Fr wen you got one.
Just moved from HTC Desire JB custom rom to S3. There isn't sooo much new compared to Samsung addons in stock rom. Google now is cool, maybe some more smoothness will come along as well but no big leap as from GB to ISC.
Just wait til it's 6pm in germany and the samsung press conference at "IFA" starts.
I am almost certain that samsung will not be releasing the update today, and I am even more certain that they won't officially mention it at IFA today, it was all a silly rumour thats got way out of hand.
The update will arrive in the next 2 weeks (IMO) but today is nothing special.

In this thread, we will provide a short Q&A for your stay on this forum. Please read thoroughly and act accordingly. While most that is needed to know is pointed out in the Forum Rules, history shows that some points of these rules are not clearly understood by some users, and others leave room for interpretation. With this Q&A, we give you some additional guidelines regarding how the forum for this device is moderated.

Who are the moderators for this forum?
The Team Leaders (Senior Moderators) for ASUS, HTC, Nokia, Nothing, nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, Sony, Xiaomi and ZTE devices are Az Biker, coal686, engloa and Stephen.
The Moderators for the sections listed above are alecxs, Funk Wizard, roirraW "edor" ehT, and Sib64.
How do I contact the moderator team?
While you are free to contact any of us via PM, for moderating purposes, it is much more advisable to use the report system. You can find the report button in the lower left corner of every post or conversation message. If you do that, your request reaches all moderators, thereby multiplying the chance of a fast reaction to your request. If you PM a moderator, he/she does not know whether you have contacted others also and therefore it is possible that your request is handled by different moderators, possibly overruling one another. Or, the moderator you messaged might not even be online for some time (for example, due to real life issues, etc.). Our ticket system avoids that. Therefore, please always use the report system.
Where do I post my thread/issue/question?
This is a very important decision and decides not only whether you achieve the goal you intend with your thread/post, but also whether it might be regarded as off-topic/not allowed and therefore be removed. So here is a list to help you decide where to put your thread (or maybe to not post it at all):
Questions & Answers Sub-Forum
What goes here:
All device related questions (questions pertaining to a ROM/kernel/theme/mod, etc. should be asked in the ROM/kernel/theme/mod's specific thread, if it exists)
Guides, News, & Discussion Sub-Forum
What goes here:
Guides, collections, tutorials, repositories, indexes
General information about the device
Tips and tricks
General discussion about technical aspects of the device
What does not go here (by far an uncomplete list, just some examples for topics that are not acceptable):
Everything prohibited by the Forum Rules.
Trolling, arguing, etc.
"What was your last phone/will be your next phone" (Off-topic for a device forum, you can post this in the Off-topic Forum)
"Hello", "Goodbye", "Merry Christmas/Easter/Hannukkah/whatever" (Obviously off-topic, just imagine if every user posts this!)
"I'll never buy XYZ brand/phone again", "Why Sony/Xiaomi/whoever sucks" and all other "hate" threads (Tell that to those guys, not us)
"Help!", "How do I...", "Why..." and all other questions (They belong in the Q&A sub-forum)
ROMs, Kernels, Recoveries, & Other Development Sub-Forum
What goes here:
Publications and releases of your own development (ROMs, kernels, recoveries, etc.; for exact rules for creating such threads, please refer to Post #2 and Post #3 below)
What does not go here:
Any questions, guides, tutorials, general information/discussion, etc.
Themes, Apps, and Mods Sub-Forum
What goes here:
All discussions related to device specific theming or applications (self-made or shared)
Announcements and discussions regarding modifications made to device specific theme or application
Accessories Sub-Forum
What goes here:
All discussions related to accessories relevant to the device
NOTE: Not allowed in any section (including signatures):
Everything prohibited by the Forum Rules.
Specified or implied off-topic threads.
Discussion of/linking to work of developers that are banned from XDA. If they are banned, so is their work.
Political/religious statements of any kind.
Where can I post things that are not allowed in a Device Forum?
You might want to have a look in the General Discussion Forum for forums like:
General
Off-topic
Android Development and Hacking
What do I do when I do not understand a moderator's decision?
Please feel free to contact the moderator via PM to request clarification. They are approachable people, not robots. If that does not satisfy you, you can contact one of the Team Leaders (Senior Moderators). Do not, however, discuss any moderating issues in any of the forums. This will always be regarded off-topic (which it actually is).
Now let's all have fun on this forum and help each other to make XDA a place where users can gather useful information instead of sipping through knee deep piles of unorganized rubbish.
Regards,
Your Moderating Team for ASUS, HTC, Nokia, Nothing, nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, Sony, Xiaomi and ZTE devices
XDA-Developers and the GPL
Hello everyone,
As many of you know, here at XDA we have a strict policy regarding GPL v2. What you may not understand is what that means and what effects it may have on you. Simply put, "the GNU GPL is a software license agreement, under which parts of the Android operating system are licensed. The majority of Android is licensed under the Apache license, but the Linux Kernel (which is present in every running Android ROM in some shape or form) is licensed under the GPL (version 2)".
So what does this mean for the average user?
To keep things simple, this license is one of the reasons Android exists in the open source capacity that it does. It requires developers to keep their kernel source open and has created the community sharing programs that have made Android so wonderful.
If you are a developer, what does this mean for you?
It doesn't matter if you are creating a whole ROM or just the kernel, the process of being GPL compliant is a very simple one to explain. Basically, we expect you to either link the source that you have chosen to use or upload the source you have created into a format that can be viewed by anyone and everyone. Below are the 3 most common situations that developers run into when needing to stay GPL compliant under XDA rules:
1. If you are using a stock kernel, you MUST mention where you obtained your source kernel. Also, having a link leading to where the manufacturer has uploaded their source is always helpful.
2. If you are using a community driven source build (e.g. LineageOS, AOSP, etc.) or a singular developer's source, you MUST link directly to the repository that contains the kernel for that specific device. If you are only linking to another thread or to a general repository, this will not be considered as being GPL compliant unless the code has not been modified.
3. If you are forking a repository that is similar to the examples listed above in #2, you MUST publish and link your entire kernel source. This includes any and all changes that you have made. Two of the most common ways developers publish their source on XDA are either with GitHub, or GitLab. While these two methods are recommended, they are not the only routes you can choose to accomplish this. All that is required is that the source can be viewed and downloaded by anyone who wishes to do so. When releasing an update, your repository must be updated the moment you release your ROM or kernel on XDA. If you can post your update to XDA, there should be no reason as to why you cannot release your source.
What if the manufacturer for my device has not released their kernel source?
In a perfect world this would not happen, but unfortunately, this is not the case. Pulser-G2 wrote a portal article in 2013 explaining a certain situation that has come across our desks. You'll find more examples here. We can only advise you to reach out to these manufacturers with a kind request to comply with GPL v2.
With all of that being said I will leave you with this...
By posting your work on XDA-Developers, you are agreeing that it complies with relevant licensing conditions. As such, by posting a kernel or other work containing GPL code, you are confirming to us that you have made this source code available publicly under the GPL. Failure to follow this policy will result in the closure of your thread and the removal of the download links.

ROMs, Kernel, Recoveries, & Other Development Forum
This forum is exclusively reserved for ROMS, Kernels, Recoveries etc. provided they are your own development.
Try to keep the development threads clean. No off-topic posting and no question should be posted in this forum.
Use the report button in the lower left corner of an offending post to let us mods know we need to take action. Don't take matters into your own hands.
Sources need to be posted for all kernels. They're also needed for all ROMs where license demands it. Please refer to Post #2 above for more on this.
You need to use tags in the thread title, like [ROM], [KERNEL], etc. throughout XDA. Please refer to Post #4 below for more on this.
Any disputes between developers should be handled by PM; always try to solve the issue amicably first via PM. No public posting in a development thread regarding these matters.
ROM issues should be discussed within their respective threads.
Thread titles should always coincide with ROMS already available for download. Notification of an upcoming ROM through thread title/placeholder thread is not allowed. A changelog for the yet unreleased ROM can be included in the OP or in another post clearly marked as expected changelog.
All threads posted in this forum that are NOT about one's own development may be closed or deleted. Posters that will choose to disregard these guidelines will be infracted.

WhatsApp/Telegram Groups and Channels - Going Forward
Hello XDA family! Just notifying all members that posting certain links to Telegram and other sites like WhatsApp is now allowed on XDA.
What does that mean?
We will allow links to messages on Telegram and/or other platforms anywhere, as long as they provide content for a discussion, question, or is pertinent news. This is exactly like the guidelines for YouTube links.
What about download links?
Download links from hosts, platforms or other sources are allowed as long as they do not require registration. Some Telegram links require registration for downloads, so they will not be allowed. Please check them before posting.
What is NOT changing?
Only one link to a Telegram support group is allowed in the first post of a development thread on the condition that main support is still provided on XDA. This means you can mention Telegram group: https://t.me/abc in the first post as long as you're providing thorough support in your XDA thread.
What is NOT allowed?
Posts like For support, join my Telegram group: https://t.me/abc. This means you're not willing to provide support to users on XDA.
Drop-and-run posts/threads are still not allowed under the self-promotion rule. So posts/threads like "Come to my channel for xyz" or "Watch my video and like my channel" are still not allowed. Such links will be removed and the member will be contacted regarding XDA Forum Rule #5 for self-promotion (under bullet point #6):
Self-promotion is forbidden, this includes blogs, social media and video channels etc. Random links will be removed.

7. Do not spam, sell or trade on the forums.
If you wish to advertise a product, contact us we provide ads. But do not post it in the forums, it will be removed and you're likely to receive a ban.
From Nov 30 2012 the Marketplace will close. No new Wanting to Buy or Sell threads should be made after 19 Nov 2012. From Nov 30 2012 selling, buying, trading and exchanging devices or any item will no longer be permitted in any forum or via Private Messages.
General Forums - For news and announcements relating to your device.
Q&A Forums - For all question threads / posts. If there is no Q&A forum use the device General Forum
Accessories subforum - For posts related to accessories relevant to the phone model
Development Forums (ones with the word development in the title) - For developers to post release threads e.g. ROMs and Kernels including modifications to Kernels, Bootloaders, ROMs, etc.
Themes and Apps Forums - For themers to post Themes and App. announcements & discussions including modifications made to Apps and Themes.
16. Bumping Threads (posting simply to force a thread to the top of the thread queue)
Do not "bump" a thread more than once per 24 hours.
In addition to the forum rules, please keep the following points in mind:
-- If you notice a post that is abusive, inappropriate or off-topic, please just report it WITHOUT adding a comment in the thread -- no need to add to the spam.
-- Only work that you created goes in the Development sections. If you did not create it, it goes in Guides, not Development.
-- Reference, tutorials and how-to's belong in the Guide Section.
-- All questions belong in the Q&A Section, not in Guides or Development.
-- Do not create placeholder threads (including placeholder threads for ROMs, radios, guides, updates, tweaks, etc.).

Last but not least and just to mention if you eventually intend to publish a ROM on XDA. In accordance the XDA's policy regarding the GPL you will be required to provide a link to your kernel source. Please be aware that XDA enforces this mandatory requirement.
I hope a vivid and fruitful discussion develops in this thread - and as you said without any questions about ETA's - that supports you in the progress of your ROM development. Do not hesitate to report any "ETA posts" (best via the report function), and we're happy to remove those from the thread on your behalf.
