hi, anyone has backup the old fring apk when skype was still working? I know the current version won't work, but I tried it before when it was still working, so I am hoping if I can install the old version it will work.
Or if anyone has a better idea of how to do evo <--> PC video call, I am all ears.
it won't work...I tried this already. as soon as the apk signs you in, the video option disappears...everytime. fring has control over every attempt to use their service, bc you must be logged in to make/receive calls.
i wish there was a workaround though...wish someone would just figure a way to make video calls to a pc WITHOUT paying. (i.e. sipdroid to pc using pbxes cost $$)

Better option: I wish Skype would get their head out of their collective asses and let people do what they want with their public API and system, or just hurry up and push out a non-Verizon-only VoIP (not GV-style forwarding/calling) with video, app. Like they promised they would. And haven't...
Why doesn't google talk have video calls.. Or web cam? Cause google talk us multi platform and desktop... That would be a huge win... Especially for google with voice, chat, web cam
I can't remember but isn't there an option for web cam in google talk desktop (pc) client?

found a alternative that seems promising (phone to PC 2way), it's called Live mobile video chat, search "movichaforevo" in market. I just installed it on my phone, will try it with a PC when I have a chance.

Hi
Has anyone tried this app on the Desire.
Voice Dialer HF
It works on the Nexus One (although you still need to touch the screen as there is no camera button).
My Nexus One has no camera button. How do I start VDHF?
Today, VDHF on the Nexus One may only be started via the icon, since the Nexus One has neither a camera nor a send button. As soon as Google releases an OTA update that activates the Bluetooth "voice activation" feature, we will add support.
It's the closest thing to proper bluetooth voice dialing available at the moment, and since my phone is due to arrive early next week I would be interested if anyone has used this app or will now try it if they didn't know it existed.
Looking foward to receiving feedback.

Is the inibility to download beacuse of the restrictions that are seemingly on the Desire at the moment or is there another reason?

For this issue, you can try button shortcut in the market! you will love that I think ;-)
Anyone on this app.
Is it a copy protected app or is it just not downloadable because it's not compatable. I haven't received my phone yet, and to be honest I am beginning to think I was too hasty in ordering it.
EDIT: INFO from Voice Dialer HF
# I can't buy any paid app from Android Market. I use a Google Hosted Domain.
* We have had reports that users signing up for Google Checkout with a Google Hosted Domain email address (Gmail using your own domain name) may not be able to download paid apps from Android Market. A workaround is to sign up using an email address with a standard Gmail [email protected] account. Discussions here and here.
UPDATE
Okay
I've spoken with the developer and the UK sales of his prodcut is suspended because initial voice recognition results with the product were not good. However when I get my phone he isprepared to let me try. I get the impression that it is tweakable. For me, a product like this is the difference between keeping the phone when it arrives, or returning it.
You should try Choice Dialer. I got it from the market on my Desire. There's a free version which will voice dial. There is also a paid version which lets you play an album or playlist by voice. Works well but still no bluetooth control as no voice activation seems to work by bluetooth. Other problem I had was that I could not choose a single song track by voice as I seem to have too many. Tony, the developer, has not yet yet been able to resolve this for me. Voice dialling isn't perfect but pretty good for me. You must speak clearly though.
Try it.
Choice dialer works fine as long as you set it up to work only as a phone voice dialer.
If you enable also the voice apps it often gets confused.
I have used it only one day but it seems like it can deliver also via BT headset.
fingers are still crossed but so far so good...
Well my experience after 1 hour is quite different.
I have 600 contacts, most with just a mobile number, but some with mob/Home and some with mob/home/work. I would say sucess rate is about 5% at the moment.
I'm also getting
Sorry!
'The application choice dialer free (process com.resounding.choicedialer.free) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.' more often than I get a correct call made. Okay Android OS is new for me, so it's unfair to judge, but this is awful compared to MS Voice Command.

I tried it.
It wouldn't undertand me at all!
Also after dialling it went off and I had to press the phone button to select it again for it to start listening again.
If I have to do that I might as weel just use speed dial..
Maybe I am using it wrong??
Try vlingo.

Choice Dialler Works fine for me even with a slight Welsh accent. Speak slow and it also picks up on contacts mobile, home or work number.
So since the froyo update we can finally do webcam to pc video calling the only problem seems with the yahoo app is you have to hold the epic sideways to be normal on the other end which then makes you the person your chatting with sideways on the phone.
Anyone know a way to fix this?

i am having this same issue and i noticed its the same thing on the 2.2 version on the galaxy tab so its not a bug with the pre release version. I think it must be a compatibility issue with the galaxy devices and yahoo video chat. When i am video chatting my Epic has to be upside down for them to see me right then i see them sideways. This sucks
Try Droidcam- it's in the market- it has a fix for this. Definitely works with Skype and flash-based webcam clients like chatroulette. Don't see why it wouldn't work with Yahoo.
Can you use Droidcam over 4G? because it seems like it's just a wifi cam app. BTW the new yahoo update has made the sideways thing even more annoying. They added landscape support which automatically rotates your video feed which means now you are ALWAYS sideways.
I have the same problem as well. Voice is also slow through wifi and 3g. However, the image coming from the phone has great quality but sideways.
Update on this
I emailed them about this now and got a response and also included and idea to allow mobile users to rotate their webcam in case it's not right-side up. Here's the response in case anyone is interested:
"Hello AndroidIsEpic,
Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Mobile.
Before I go into addressing your concern, I'd like to first apologize
for the delay in my responding to your inquiry. We are committed to
answering your questions as quickly and accurately as possible. However,
we are currently receiving unusually high volumes which caused the
delayed response.
If I understand your inquiry correctly, you would like to be able to
rotate the webcam with Yahoo! Messenger on your mobile device. Thanks
for your suggestion of a new feature for Yahoo! Messenger.
AndroidIsEpic, the current version of Yahoo! Messenger doesn't have this
feature, but we appreciate that you took the time to tell us about what
you'd like to see in a future version. I'll pass your suggestion on to
the Yahoo! Messenger Product Team, and they will put it under
consideration for a future release. Please understand that our
development cycles can be quite lengthy, so your suggestion isn't likely
to be added right away if the development team does decide to include
it.
In case you have another suggestion in the future, we created some

it. Suggestions entered through these feedback pages are regularly

Hi guys,
I am new here and forgive me if I am asking something that was already discussed before.
Is there a way to install Skype on this device? I tried to go to Skype android section and download it from there but it always requesting phone number and type....
Regards
I FOUND A WAY TO FAKE OUT SKYPE!!!!
1st off let me start, i have the 1.0c mod added to my A7, and i extracted the vending .apk for 2.2.6 marketplace from the update zip found here on xda, cleared out the cache and data, and FC the marketplace, then installed the apk like a normal program, so i have an updated marketplace as well...
but like most of us at this point, when we try and logon to skype it gets caught in a loop...
im very short on time, so ill be quick... ive also got an N1 running cryo 6.1
i get to the login screen for skype for both devices, i have my GF's account entered on the A7 and my account entered on the N1, both have WiFi turned on, i press signon on both devices at the exact same time, and the A7 gets pasted the loop and logs on to skype, i have to very quickly logoff of skype on the N1, and the A7 works!
it does cause a lot of FC's but atleast its progress, and maybe a direction for the devs to look into....
ill give much more detailed walkthru when i get back tonight, or maybe tomorrow...
Whats wrong with skype? I logged into skype and made a phone call to my house with no trouble except when i tried to end the call, it locked up.
My Skype sits at logging in forever. What version of Skype are you running fisher?
Where did you find Skype android version to download? ...and I believe that it is in Skype interest to fix the bugs and make it work on Elocity or any other android device using WiFi or 3G...
Regards
Help - Skype
Same issue - trying to use Skype downloaded from Marketplace (A7 using Dexter version 1c) - seems to be stuck with getting logged in - got it to work once, but I am not able to repeat - please advise ...........thanks - Love the A7 just wish I could address these shortcoming
Installed Skype 1.02 for Android build 1.0.0.659...cannot make it work ...whenever I try to log in it stops working ..sometimes it shows the message "logging in" but it cannot complete the atsk...Have anybody made Skype work on Elocity?
Thanks
as stated earliler i have been able to get skype running on several occasions...
skype currently does not have a valid electronic signature for the tablet, or the tablet the build.prop was copied from...
that is why when we attempt to logon to skype, its checking for the signature, getting caught because it is getting mixed signals from our device and getting stuck in the 'loop'
but my N1 does have a valid signature... which i think is why skype is getting faked out when both devices are logging on from the same wireless network... the signature is going out from my N1, and the tablet is logging on...
Interesting...Unfortunately I do not have phone to use it to log at the same time...and I am trying to do it over WIFI
I bet you Skype will fix it eventualy
Regards
just a quick note.
it has been written in forum for a long time, that Skype somehow is protected from being used over mobile data connections.. im not sure how that affect regular users, but they have done something for US users to protect against Skype use. but this was all primarily on mobiles, im not sure how this fits into a tablet being used.
You may be right...the Android so far was always connected with the smartphones...tablets are very new thing and have been coming out only in last 6 +/- months with latest version iteration of 2.1, 2.2 ans hopefully this summer 3.0.
Regards

Weird. I'm in Russia
I installed Market by self (it isn't hard for me) and don't use DexterMod yet)
There are some difference, maybe some libraries absent.
Will install DM and check soon.
In Canada, Skype works fine. Now if only Skype had video calling everything would be golden.

thats explains it.. the build.prop of official rom is not approved by Skype so it fails.. you need a different rom install or "steal it from my mod", it will solve it you dont want the new version.

heya,
I've got the new 2.3.4 update for my Nexus One, and it seems that there's absolutely no voice or video support in chat.
Other people on the forum seem to have confirmed this as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061270&page=2
It seems like a pretty lousy move from Google.
On their blog post:
http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2011/04/video-chat-on-your-android-phone.html
they specifically mention that Google Talk with video and voice chat will will launch on other devices in the future.
I can understand there not being video on the Nexus One, as there's no front-facing camera (although they could still support it, just with the rear camera...lol), but it seems like a pretty low move to leave the Nexus One in the dust like that with voice as well.
Does anybody know if this is perhaps a bug in the Nexus One update, or perhaps you need to do something to unlock the voice functionality?
Cheers,
Victor
Strange, because with just the normal gtalk app installed on my nexus one (2.3.3 CM7), i'm able to at least voice chat. A pretty lame move if it doesn't allow voice and video.
Seriously, no voice and no video. Google needs to just make a universal gtalk app and put it in the market. Oh well at least there are better alternatives on the market that work now like tango and yahoo messenger.
Has anyone tried manually adding the new talk/jingle lib? I doesn't seem like its included in the update. See here for a link/how to. I would start by copying JUST the lib (second to the last line)
Google just isn't going to bring video chat to phones without a FFC (they said so in the announcement which was pretty clear to me). It offers a pretty bad experience for the average user. Voice chat is certainly possible and there's no reason to not allow it. Hopefully they fix this in a future update and hopefully put chat in the market so they can update it more often.
Just use the app and lib from the Nexus S update. Problem solved.
I agree though that they should at least allow Voice Chat. The only reason I can think of for not doing it would be that it competes with Google Voice but considering that's only available in 2 countries in the world it's hardly what I'd call "widely available".

Yes, the slightly modified Talk2.apk and lib from the thread that we both linked to above works on the N1. There is no reason to only copy the lib as it would be useless without the apk since there is nothing in the old apk actually loading the lib and calling the functions it provides.
I wish I could say I used the Talk app and I cared about this... but I can't.

Cool! Do the 'other' things that didnt work in 2.3.3 work? Like being able to initiate a voice/video call from the pc? Or sending video?
Gapps 20110503 fixes everything. I can send video AND the other user can call me. Awesome!
CM7 nightly #60.
heya,
Hmm, interesting - so you're saying if I just install the gapps 20110503 package, I'll get Gtalk with voice/video support?
Do you mean the one from here?
http://goo-inside.me/gapps/
I'm on stock Android, and I'd like to stay that way for now. This package doesn't have any dependencies on CyanogenMod, does it? And it's not going to cause any other weirdness or breakages if I install that package, is it?
I thought that package was just the stock GoogleApps package that's split off as a separate download due to licensing restrictions - what difference is it to the one that's one my Nexus One 2.3.4 now?
Cheers,
Victor
I'm pretty sure you need to be rooted. I'm running CM7 nightly #60.
So that means that the hardware is capable of video chat for sure. we should write to google and ask the nexus team to give it to us, the official way!
It is 100% capable. Confirmed working on my N1.

It says I need to be connected to WiFi to initiate a voice/video call. If someone else tries to initiate it, it'll tell me I missed a call because I wasn't on WiFi.
A buddy of mine has the Desire and its working fine on their 3G connection.

Probably needs a good 3G/3.5G connection.

For those of you that want to video chat with gmail, but don't want to wait for 2.3.4...
Vtok is in the market. It works pretty well on the Evo, but one of the weird things is: the application has a blank screen if none of your contacts (that can video chat) are logged in. You do not get a list of people that aren't logged in, and you don't get a list of people that are logged in but haven't updated to the latest google video chat.
I used it over 3g to test with my wife using her laptop, it worked well, pretty clear, but a slight delay. Check it out.
I tried this app. It's nice to see development but emphasis on the word beta at the moment.
Meh. Pretty cool. Wish I had more people to use this with though.
Does this thing use push notifications ? I refuse to use an IM app that doesn't. It's just unacceptable by today's standards.
I tried this over my home wifi, with my laptop and my EVO.
The image I saw on my laptop was good from what the phone was recording.
But my phone was receiving a horrible pixelated image from my laptop, which has a decent web camera.
Also my the image was upside down no matter which way I help my phone in portrait, but was fine in landscape.
