Is there a software or something to make it get better signal. I don't want to switch to another carrier for now. Sometimes if I am lucky, I get 1 or 2 bars, but mostly 1 or none. I have to walk around to find the good spot.
You can just place the phone on edge mode.
The X1 has poor reception. My signal level has dropped down from HSDPA all over my home and city to mostly GPRS after switching phones to the X1. Often I find my phone with no service and searching for a signal in certain locations of my house.
Even when it shows the H symbol, when I try to browse the web, most of the time the phone then drops down to Edge or GPRS.
When I pop the sim card back into my other phone (HTC Polaris/Touch Cruise) I get and connect to HSDPA without any connetion problems whatsoever.
That's one thing I hate about this phone... poor signal. Hope Sony will have an update sooooooon
I have a feeling the poor radio is a hardware issue rather than software, but I do hope I'm wrong.
Are you guys picking up 3G on ATT? My reception has been steady on the X1i. I'm connected on HSPDA most the time. However, I'd like to know whether any X1a users have picked up 3G on ATT's network. Some bloaks have posted pics of the X1is picking up 3G in the States.
My X1i can get 3G here in some parts of alabama.
Mine is an X1i and I get all the signals available from AT&T.

I have an X1a in US with ATT. During the day, the area that I am in has a weak signal but I have always been able to receive and make calls from this area, however, my X1A drops the calls in the Auto setting. When I change, the settings in "Settings"---> "Phone"--> "Band" to "Select your network type from Auto to GSM and GSM/UMTS setting from Auto to UMTSA(850+1900)+GSM(850+1900), I am able to receive and make calls without a problem, however, the phone stays in the "EDGE" mode. I am unable to get the 3G once I go into the city...The Xperia helpline was totally clueless...Can anyone assist me with this problem...? I would hate to have to change the settings each time I leave this area.

Have the exact same problem. When I contact Sony they act suprise to hear about poor signal. I posted what they respond to me some where here.
That's because technical support is in Canada and only familiar with Rogers Wireless. I called corporate headquarters in NC and complained today. Hopefully, they will be more receptive to US users on the ATT network...In the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions to avoid changing these settings? Does updating the Radio software solve this on the X1A?
My reception and call quality is absolutely amazing...
This is for X1a and problem was when connected to internet trying to get 3G or whatever.. The respond I got from sony:
Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Xperia Support.
We don't have a list of the newest updates for this phone, but I have heard nothing of your issue before, it is worth trying a reset if there is no update available.
Try resetting the hardware. To do this, hold down the two keys on the front with silver "-" signs. While you are pressing them, take the stylus and press the reset button through the top opening through the casing of the stylus.
What I also suggest is resetting the phone software via "Clear Storage".
To do this, select Start icon, then Settings, then tap the System tab. You will see Clear Storage in the top right corner.
1. The Sony Ericsson Update Service is a free download that can be found at www.sonyericsson.com, after you click on "Support" and then choose your phone model.
2. Select your country and region.
3. Under the section titled”Software and Set Up” choose, “Sony Ericsson Update Service”.
4. Download the application to your computer and install the program.
Once you have installed the program and run it, it will give you instructions on how to install it on the computer and how to run it on the phone afterwards. Please make sure the phone and the USB cable are not connected to the PC throughout the installation process. The Update Service is meant to update the software on the phone.
If you require more information, or have any other questions, please visit our website at SonyEricsson.com/X1 or call us at 1-877-7XPERIA.

Same, reception is excellent and the first time I heard a call on the x1, the quality floored me.
I'm on AT&T and have the x1a
Defective?
This may sound nuts but, back in November when I originally ordered the phone, I remembered calling a Sony Style store in my area in hopes to expedite the process. I got an employee on the phone that told me they had the phones in the store but were told by Sony Corporate to send them back and not sell them. When I attempted to confirm this on a visit to the same store, the store manager was very evasive and denied that was the case. I could tell that his response seemed a bit "defensive".
Anyhow, I was relatively fortunate and got mine on December 8; purchased online from Sony. After that, I don't think the next batch made it out until mid January.
So, my conspiracy theory is that people who received the X1a prior to mid December are proud owners of handsets that STILL have whatever problem Sony recalled them for. This would seem to explain the differences found in GPS/signal quality being found by the variety of people either complaining or praising the phone. Oh, and BTW, I can confirm that contacting the Xperia support line is a complete waste. I got a female on the line that wanted me to do a hard reset on the device for the poor GPS signal. She then went further to say that I would need to subscribe to the GPS service of my phone provider to fix the problem. I had to hang up on her to avoid verbally dessimating her.
I have one of the "original" first batch X1as ordered on the day of release. I haven't had any of the gps problems (apart from one from using advanced configuration tool, which I posted about in your gps thread) and my reception has always seemed to be at least average or slightly above.

The reception problem is operator (location)-dependant, seems to me.
AT&T has not implemented it's network at the same level around the whole country and nor even in the same frequency band
You shall remember several companies have "merged" thus incorporing a tower-signal puzzle. I guess those who luckily have a 3G-upgraded 850MHz tower nearby are performing better since the 850MHz freq tend to span signal over a greater area than the others
I was thinking of posting this in the general section but posting it here seemed more appropriate as I think the issue at hand is of a more technical nature. If this is not the case I apologize in advance.
I recently purchased a Black HTC Magic (Rogers branding) for use on the AT&T network here in the states. Since then I have had a very difficult time initiating calls while connected via 3G (UMTS/HSDPA). Even in high or low signal situations.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any consistency to my ability to make a call while on 3G. At times 5/5 calls would be successful and other times 1/5 calls are successful (the latter being true more often than not).
Suspecting there was some issue with my device being on 3G I forced my device to use 2G (EDGE) connections only. At which point my reliability issues go away completely (from what I can tell).
I don't experience any strange issues with using my data connection while on 3G/2G so it seems to be specific to voice.
Another interesting thing to note is while trying to initiate a call with the Google Voice application on 3G, I experience the same call initiation issues as mentioned above. Google Voice works as expected while on 2G.
I experience these issues on the original shipping Roger's ROM, as well as all the other 3rd party ROMS (HoFo, Cyanogen, etc...)
Here is information about my device from fastboot...

Is it possible that my SIM card may be causing issues?
Anyone else with a North American Magic experiencing issues on AT&T? I appreciate any help you guys could provide.
your phone is ok
perhaps you might have heard... iphone great phone...AT&T absolute **** network
with dropped calls, and constant diverts to voice mail. dont sweat it. its AT&T not
your mobile.
I would have to agree that it's probably the network, although I might be wrong. I also have a Rogers Magic running on AT&T in Arizona, and I have this issue as well, but not nearly as frequently as you do. This same problem used to happen from time to time with my HTC Fuze and my BlackBerry Curve.
I've had a variety of different devices on the AT&T network (Northeast/Washington, D.C) and although yes I have experienced AT&T's wonderful network. What I'm experiencing just doesn't seem right. Makes me wonder if it's my SIM or particular build....

MOD EDIT
Moved into general discussion forum as not related to android development
if you are not using a newer sim card i would start by changing that. i was using an older 3g sim which i have used with many phones and i found that by changing to a brand new sim the few connectivity issues i had have gone away
which ROM?
Just a question, but which ROM is everyone here using? I, too, experience the random inability to make phone calls over HSDPA. I was told by an at&t rep in-store today that the Rogers Magic does not 'show up' in their system as 3g capable. Pure bs is what I think, but lets rule out software, yes?
If it is not your sim card then it is most likely your network.
Calls over 3G/HSDPA is fine on my Magic and was also fine on my Nokia N79 using the same Cingular SIM card that I have. However, making outgoing Google Voice calls over 3G/HSDPA is a no go.
Yeah...making calls was fine on my Unlocked Touch Diamond, too...but it's NOT on the Magic (32a).
SO...I'd just have to guess that it's *probably* not the SIM card.
I was told (via an exceptionally helpful phone rep) that the "voice 3g" in my area is not very good, but that the "data 3g" is much better. Which (she says) is why I have trouble making phone calls, but that data works fine.
I don't think so...but without *that* answer, I'm left with the AT&T stock "well, we don't support *unlocked* phones, sir, we can't guarantee that they'll work with our network".
ARRRRRGH! REALLY?! SO, phones with the same chipset, using the same technology won't have the same results?
PLEASE, FCC, INVESTIGATE THIS B.S!
Hey radikaled, I have some new developments with GV and outgoing calls. If I set the GV call options to "ask for each call" the issue of calling over 3G appears to be alleviated somewhat. Basically, when initiating a call, you will be prompted on whether you'd like to make the call via GV or not. At this point, wait a few seconds at this prompt and then choose GV. So far the call has successfully connected 100% of the time.
It appears that the data connection is too slow to establish fully over 3G, therefore, the call fails if you don't wait the few seconds before choosing to call via GV.
Let me know if this works for you.
I too had issues with my ROgers Magic unlocked on ATT. When I first got it I used the original ROM and then the HoFo ROM. Both had similar issues with dropping calls when switching from EDGE to 3G and back. I also dropped more calls than normal.
I recently switched to Cyanogens ROM and new radio. I have not had any issues since and then. Calls and switching is very stable. Also the clarity and volume is also much better. Just my experience. Very pleased with this phone on ATT now.

Thanks for sharing your experience. May give CM ROM a shot.
Good read.
Nice post. Interesting topic.
I tried to send several other users your way...I'm sure they eventually checked this out. I've come across this issue with some other folks recently too.
Best of luck though.
Me TOO!
I also have a similar problem. When connected with HSDPA, about one third of the calls I make fail immediately, even with full signal strength. I then wait a few seconds and dial again, and it works. I actually am using the sim card from a previous nokia POS phone I had from two years ago; the ATT people just took it out of the previous crap phone and put it into my poor fuze. How much does a new SIM card cost? Can I get a new SIM card without att bothering me about not having the stock rom? I'm using Da_G's clean fuze 23008 winmo 6.5 with the 1.12.25.19 radio. I live in the Youngstown, Ohio area (between cleveland and pittsburgh), so cell reception on any network is pretty bad, but it seems the ATT/cingular network around here is particularily bad. Any ideas?
Hi,
Just got the Galaxy S, im on orange and im finding that the phone is going straight to VM even with full signal, this seems to happen about 80% of the time, i get a message straight after saying i have a missed call. It seems to be worse when its in my pocket, i had a similar issue with my nokia 5800 but not as bad, i just thought it was the phone getting old.
I have a new sim but same number etc.
Anyone else having similar issues?
I had the exact same thing on mt old i8910hd on orange.I put it down to the fact the phone had a few knocks but who knows? Hasnt happened once on galaxy s with vodafone
Also on Vodafone, not encountered this problem yet.
You may have to consider that this is a problem with your provider. In the netherlands, tmobile had an issue with this due to an overloaded network. Since you live in london I guess that would be a likely reason (tmobile mainly had issues in crowded areas). My suggestion is to try and disable your 3G connection and see if that makes a difference. Here people couldn't receive calls when their 3G was on but when they turned it off, the problems seemed to disappear.
If this works for you, you may want to contact your operator. The sounds to me like it isn't a device related issue.

Thanks for the reply, stepping down to 2g did seem to help, i have found some other posts on other forums, one forum suggests that orange are aware of the issue, lets just hope they resolve it soon.
I had this problem with orange at least 8 months or so, so i wouldnt hold your breath
Hey guys,
I'm here because my Mom recently switched to Tmobile and while things do work, she is having an issue with dropped calls. The APNs are set correctly, she has data service, I've set the "network mode" to LTE/GSM so it shouldn't be trying to connect to the CDMA network. What could be causing this? She's about ready to buy a new phone, but I know there has to be a solution to this. The phone works, and granted it's her phone not mine so I can't say for sure exactly what's going on when it happens but she claims it happens ALL the time (7 dropped calls in a single conversation with someone) and I can't imagine why it would/should happen at all. What's the solution here? I'd like to keep her on stock firmware if possible, but if necessary I can either root and/or flash cyanogenmod.
If it were my phone I'd first root, try that, see how it goes, then try CM, see if that does it... but she's not going to put up with that back and forth and repeated wipes. She's just going to get annoyed and buy a new phone despite the one she has being just fine. It MUST be somewhere in the software. I'm not sure if it's trying to switch to CDMA before realizing it can't, or if maybe it has something to do with VoLTE trying to kick in and connect to Verizon.
I'm pretty proficient with this stuff (been modding my Nexus' for years) so I can follow directions pretty easily, but I do need a pointer in the right direction because I can't figure out what's going on with this custom Verizon crap... Thanks!
Probably a non-issue, but is her cell signal strength really low?
We recently did the same thing - moved Verizon S5 to T-Mobile, but my wife has had no dropped calls. Her signal actually is better on TMO than VZW (hence the switch). Our TMO rep set the APN and network mode like you mentioned, so that shouldn't be your issue.
Verizon VoLTE shouldn't be a problem either since you have a TMO SIM, its not even connection to the CDMA towers.
Hi guys,
I've been a visitor of the forums over many years now. Learned quite a bit reading all these great posts.
I'm constantly changing phones but always return to Samsung. Now I'm moving from the Note 5 to the S7E.
I just picked up the S7E today and I'm very impressed. Phone looks great and is very fast. A couple of hours playing with the phone I noticed a big problem. I'm unable to make calls when my phone is connected to LTE. When I attempt to call someone it doesn't drop to 3G to place the call. Also my Internet stops working. I can't force 3G/2G and my only option is to reboot the phone. Once I reboot, I'm able to force 3G/2G and I'm able to make calls and Internet works before and after calls. But in this mode I'm stuck without LTE.
Do you think this is faulty hardware? Or should a software update fix this?
Many thanks to XDA community!
Who is your carrier and which exact variant (SM-G935T, ...935V, etc.) of the device do you have?
Are you in the U.S. or somewhere else?
If this is a carrier-specific device being used on its intended carrier's network, then this problem is something their support people could (and should) be able to help you with.
There aren't enough specifics in your post for anyone to have a reasonable shot at helping with this issue.
Also, I just noticed you posted in the general discussion forum. This post is really asking for help and would be a better fit for the Q&A forum.

Hi,
I bought the international version (SM-G935F). It does not have any carrier branding.
I bought it in Switzerland and I'm using it in Switzerland with a Swiss carrier.
Mods, please move this thread to the appropriate section if it doesn't belong here.
Thanks!

I also had an S7 Edge with calling issues (dropped every call after a few seconds, possibly trying to switch from 4G to 3G or from 3G to 2G). It turns out it was defective and the replacement works as intended.
Just did a hard reset now.
Was able to make one call. When I tried a second time, same issue. Reboot seems to allow me to make an initial call but then same issue again.
Will take it back tomorrow and hope they have a replacement in stock.
The Feature you are talking about is Voice over LTE! Here in germany this is only anabled in the branded Provider Firmwares like from Vodafone or t-mobile germany. If you have an unbranded Device like i have G635F than VOLTE is not working cause its locked! Not Sure how this works with swiss Providers. In germany VOLTE only is working with Company branded Firmware! And to be honest i am rally worried about that cause i will never use branding Firmwares.
Update: took the s7 edge back to the store and of course the phone worked perfectly. There was nothing they could do as the phone worked fine and we were able to make many test calls.
Phone worked fine during the day but when I got home the problem started again. After some testing, it seems the problem only occurs when connected to 4G+/LTE+/carrier aggregation.
Couldn't place any calls at home this morning but at work where I only get 4G everything works perfectly. Very strange.
In Switzerland I don't think we have VoLTE. When we place calls the phone drops to 3G but for some reason it's not happening when connected to 4G+.
Ill do some more testing today to see if I can find any 4G+ areas near work to test.

Same issue
Hi,
I just got my new S7 Edge (SM-935F) and I think I have the exact same problem. When I'm in the city where I live (Morges, Switzerland), I can't make or receive any call while on 4G but data works. Switching to 2G allows me to make or receive call though.
Then, when in a different city (50km away), everything works as it should be (call and data on 4G). Did a factory reset and it also didn't change a thing.
The guy from my carrier's shop (Sunrise) told me that there was a known issue with 4G calls on the S7 and S7 Edge in different cities (mostly in the canton Valais). I've also been told that Samsung is working on an update to fix it so returning the phone to get a new one would be useless. Did he tell when that would probably be fixed ? Of course not..
I hope someone find a fix soon
Looks like the antenna gate from the iphone 4 but seriously how can something like that still happen
Hi,
Looks like we have exactly the same problem. I work in Geneva but live in Gland. Today I tested my phone in Geneva and it worked perfectly everywhere while in 4G or 4G+. As soon as I arrived home in Gland I'm unable to make calls so I have to force 3G/2G in order to receive and make calls.
By the way I also have sunrise as a carrier.
Good to know that it's a known problem and that they are working on a fix. It's very annoying... Hope they fix it soon!
