I love how the iPhone does it it... by showing a number next to the application updates icon showing you how many and which apps can be updated. A simple click or two and your app is fully updated.
Will Android be able to do something similar? I don't see anything currently on notifying us of updates in the OS. There is a downloaded section in the android store that shows which apps you have downloaded and installed. I guess in here it could say "Update Avalble" next to an app that has been updated?
I really hope this feature is already there or will be added ASAP. There's going to be a tone of software hitting the store soon and most devs will probably release updates every 1-2 weeks. Right now, I don't think it's even possible to see what version of some apps you have installed.
So far what I encounter is that once I open and application and an update is available it asks if I want to download the new version. No so sure about the OTA build update...
Actually, it's quite annoying, for the apps I've had that are updated the update box pops up every minute or so until I hit update. This is only for marketplace apps.
My point is, don't worry. If you have an app that needs an update you're gonna know.
That's good news. I'm glad they thought of this. It's one of the things I disliked about WM. I'd have to open each app and check the version number, and then visit the devs website to see if there's a newer version available. I really like that I can now spend more time working (or playing) and less time checking on things like the latest updates.
That would be pretty annoying to have it pop up every minute or so... hopefully they'll fix that in one of the next updates. But if it were me I'd just update it right away so it wouldn't effect me.
What apps do you guys have giving you update notifications?
I had the following apps for the past 2 days that had updates but Android never notified me of the new updates:
QuickPedia
ShopSavvy
FatSecret
I had to visit the marketplace and scan for apps be newest release. If I clicked on one of my installed apps and there was a newer release it would have an "Install" link instead of the normal "Open" link.
i checked atrackDog this morning and its says that the default map app has an update.
3.1 I believe has anyone else seen this or know what this is all about?
**after waking up the info is as followed:
JF 1.5 adp1
aTrackDog 2.40 (2.50 doesnt show system apps)
Maps Installed 3.0.1 New 3.1.0
Old size 3137 New 1.9mb
Market search comes up with nothing
Are you sure it wasnt MY Maps Editor? Because i believe the google apps are only updated through OTA updates... if not that must be a glitch of some sort
Yea never installed my map edtior but it could or been a glitch cuz its 3.0.1 and 3.1.0 but I was thinking maybe its from another build .
ok so at least I wasn't the only one that see's that when I searched with aTrackdog, its funny how a stock app has an update.....maybe it is a glitch of somekind, and I'm pretty sure its the stock maps app
Screenshot : http://picasaweb.google.com/m/viewe...ght28/5337966037861647569/5337967798392863058
Did you guys select update to see what happens? Before you update go to your current maps and see if you have lattitude, then check the about section and check what version you have. Then hit update and check the about section again. Also when you hit update, does it take you to the android market with description and comments?
it does take u to the market, but it doesn't find the adress because maps is not in the market. and everything is up to date witth mine when I check the maps app
I have an update for it aswell... wonder if this is a home built version from someone
This is what happens. Atrack dog scans all users system to see if there's an update. If a user (with a hero rom or something) has a newer version of something that you have (maps) it will show as an update.
Conclusion, someone that uses atrack dog has a new map probably with a different rom, so it's showing you it has an update, but it's not on the market.

Well that explains it. I always hate how aTrackDog skips over 4 of the apps I have because it says theres a new version out, even though the market says NOPE.
Anyone have an apk of atrackdog 2.4? I was a bit lost for a minute when I updated and my list of apps went from 96 to 82 lol.
tehseano
i got atrackdog 2.4 and the reason your apps drop is because its no longer checking for system apps only market install.
give me a place or and email and ill send you 2.4 I try my hardest never to delete old files
Long story short, Google Maps fails at life. I can be sitting at my house (in Chicago) and it says I am in Des Plaines (15 minutes away).
I go to my g/f's house about 3 hours away and it has me going in circles if I follow it's directions.
I finally just went ahead and bought a stand-alone GPS

Hello,
I just received my new GS4 last night. Google Now crashes repeatedly. It will run OK if I don't add a sports team or a stock ticker but once I "customize" it, it will crash every time I start it.
The error message is "Unfortunately, Google Search Has Stopped".
I have cleared data and then I go through the opt-in process. It will run fine but as mentioned as soon as I change a setting, it will crash and then crash every time after that.
It's Google Search 2.4.10. I can't update it via the Play Store since it's a built-in app. Software version is L720VPUAMDC.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Erick

Google search is updated via the Google Play store. That's where I always get the notification to update. Sometimes it is a manual update. Check there for an update. Google Play > Menu Button > My Apps > See if it has an update available.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had checked that option and there was nothing. I checked the version number there 2.4.10 and that appears to be the most current build.
I just wiped my phone this morning (factory reset from recovery) and signed in. I did nothing else, didn't install any apps, nothing. Went to Google Now, added a sports team and the app crashed as I backed out of the screens. If I press the google button (to the left of the search bar) on the home screen, it hangs. Sometimes it comes up for a sec and then disappears but most of the time I get the "Unfortunately, Google Search has stopped".
This is really odd. I would be very surprised if I am the only user having this issue

Although my sports teams setup in Google Now carried over from my GS3, I decided to try adding another team. I was successful in adding one and backing out of the app without it crashing. I also hit the google button and still didn't have an issue. Not sure what's going on with yours, unfortunately. I'm running 100% stock MDC Android that came on the phone out of the box one week ago.

I have not tried this but I have read of others apparently solving this issue but uninstalling Google Search using Titanium Backup (requires root) then re-installing via Google Play.

Thanks. I saw that too. My only concern was if I should just bring it into the Sprint store first for them to have a look at it. I was worried that if I went the root route to correct it (and I do intend to root anyways), if that didn't correct the problem, then I would need to bring it into the store for them to look at.
Will the restore OS/Wipe Disk option (from stock recovery) bring it back to 100% "original" in case I needed to take it in?
Thanks for the reply. I may just go that route
Unfortunately, Google search has stopped... followup
Did you go with the Titanium backup route an deleted the Google Search app (actually, as I understand it, from the actual ROM... not only as a regular installed app) and re-installed from the Play Store? if so, what are the results?
Both my N4 and my N7 started showing "Unfortunately, Google search has stopped" messages after I edited one sports card in Google Now. Since its happening in both devices it is clearly either an app related issue, a Google related issue or something in between but, definitely NOT a hardware issue...
Your comments are welcome, thanks in advance.

I tested with a friend who got the GS4 last week from Sprint also. I walked him through all of the steps and his search application did not hang at all after adding a sports team or stock ticker. He was on firmware version MDL.
I took it to the Sprint store (even though I bought it from Costco) and they agreed 100% that something was wrong with it. They didn't want to work on it since I just got it from Costco. They said to just take it back since it's so new.
This morning, I received the MDL update. I applied it but unfortunately, it didn't fix the problem
I called Wireless Advocates this morning (the company that sells for Costco) and they suggested that I go back to the store to return it (even though their instructions that arrived with the phone specifically says Do Not Return To Costco In Case Of A Problem.
So, I'm kind of at a loss. If I root it and try to Titanium to delete it, I'm worried that I will lose any recourse with Costco. Once it's rooted, I am out on my own. I am thinking that I will try and return it tonight and if I am unsuccessful, then I will root it and delete the app.
Well, to be honest with you... as annoying and pissing it is to have the "Unfortunately Google Search Has Stopped" problem and Google Now not working properly on its last update, the problem seems not to be as bad to return your shiny new phone to Costco or where you bought it.
This is actually a software problem that Google should be fixing very soon and releasing an update to do so. Bear in mind, also that this very week Google I/O conference will take place in San Francisco and most probably they will release a new Android version 4.3 or 5.... which should include most probably a fix to this.
In the meantime, go to your Play Store, search fo "Google Search" and un-install all upgrade to this app, also disable auto-updates for this app and that should work. I have done it and it is OK (not the latest Google Now..but it works, at least doesn't crash).
During the lifetime of your phone you will encounter bugs in software, as long as they are repaired quickly and there are not impeding the usage of the phone and its critical functions, those are not reasons to return it. My 2 cents.
Good luck.

Thanks Piensa. I appreciate your detailed response.
I am right there with you. I can deal with it as long as I know that it's a software issue and not a hardware issue. The more and more I have been reading (and your reply also) indicates that it is a software issue. The weird part is why my friend's Sprint GS4 doesn't have this problem and the Sprint Store also said that it was a definite bug. That's the part I don't get. Why does his Google Search work and mine is crashing?
Good point about Google I/O (excited to see what they announce this week) and maybe an update will be released. Unfortunately, the version of Google Now included with the GS4 is the very latest (ver 2.4.10.626027) and I am unable to back out any updates (thanks for the suggestion).
I guess I will ride it out this week and see what comes out of Google I/O.
Question. Do you know if I root the phone without installing a custom recovery, can I back it out simply by factory resetting the phone and will Costco/Sprint know that it was rooted at one point?
Thanks again for your help.
Thanks for your comment.
Well, we are all here to help each other...that's the beauty of the Internet !
It seems to my that because of your phone's use pattern the bug got hit and appeared... your friend may not be enjoying his phone as you are...so, no bugs have appeared. Or, he may not have the latest version of Google Search (so he is using an outdated phone!
Pretty much the same happened to me... since few days ago, my Google Now worked perfectly, actually I had no sports card...suddenly, I wanted to check what the heck people was watching on public TV (a sports event) in a restaurant I went to...so I asked Google Now to search..and it came with the names of the playing teams...and decided to add them as my favorite sports in the sports card....everything went down from there when I tried deleting those "favorite teams" from the sports card...everything Google Now started crashing.....
On the other hand, my wife's smartphone, another Android, still works flawlessly... no crashing of G-Now, no weird messages...and she has the exact same Android version as I do.... so, well, we both got lucky finding that SOFTWARE bug.... let us hope that Google will fix it very soon. There are MANY people experiencing this annoyance so, I am confident Google will not let it pass too long...(I understand they may be a little busy with their 2013 I/O event...so, I can wait a few days....).
Again, just downgrade to a previous version of Google Search, by deleting the upgrades of it in the Play Store and don't let it self upgrade Google Searh, for now... if you do that, you will be fine.

I can't back out any updates as there have been none to Google Search. The GS4 ships with the most current. The only option for Google Search in the Play Store is "open".
I can uninstall updates to Gmail, etc but not Google Search (see attached pic).
Thanks for your assistance.
"Unfortunately Google Search Has Stopped
Woow. you are correct.
The version of Google Search that your GS4 came with, from factory, is in fact the latest one. My Nexus 4 came with a previous version installed thus I was able to do the downgrade.
So, if you are not rooted, and/or do not want to mess with your firmware, seems you have to wait for Google to fix this issue. Sorry to learn that friend.
Lets hope it gets fixed very soon.

Yup. I'm trying to decide what to do now. I went to Costco tonight to look into swapping it out for a new one and they don't carry Sprint products in store. So I would either need to work with Wireless Advocates to ship it back and pay $600 for an advance replacement or just wait it out, hoping that the phone itself is fine and wait for Google to correct it.
If I was still on MDC, I would have used motochopper to root it, uninstall Google Search and then test re-installing it to see if it corrects it. But the MDL upgrade today killed that option.
I think I will wait a couple days, see what comes out of I/O as well as the root exploits for MDL and make a decision. It just sucks because I don't want to spend time customizing the phone to my liking in case I swap it out or wipe it, etc.
Again, many thanks for your help.

With Google officially starting the GA rollout I am curious if anyone has yet to get it? I updated to the Google Play Services Beta and latest Google apps via apkmirror.com. And NO I have NOT got GA working.
I STILL only have this (Screenshot)
I used a beta APK that was linked from Android police a couple weeks ago, but it broke the Feed part of the Google app, so I deleted it. Assistant did work.

The switch is server sided no APK's will get you the assistant anymore.
At least that's what I've been made to believe. We'll all have to patiently wait.

re assistant
I updated to nougat. Tried beta's too. Still no assistant!
I have unlocked the secret to getting Google Assistant and it unfortunately it requires your Google account to be activated server side. I tested it on 2 other devices including my own. As long as your Gmail account is on a phone with Marshmallow or above and you setup Google now to your account the next time you hold the home button it starts the assistant setup. The downside is if you remove that google account it does not stay unlocked to that device. So if you have family member that has it you can get it but otherwise Google will have to unlock your account.....
Cleared Google now app's cache, went through the setup and customization and let it run for a few minutes and got the assistant setup
Don't think it had to do with clearing the app cache they had a massive rollout of accounts the night before and yesterday looks like we got lucky.
Google assistant just landed on my phone about an hour ago. Google must be rolling things out slowly, but didn't have to do anything special.
It became active for me last night around 11pm.
I've had assistant on stock 6.0.1 for weeks... I didn't realize it was a big deal lol. Just checked for system updates though and Nougat is FINALLY available
With everything that Verizon WON'T allow us to have... (ie. Samsung Cloud, Samsung Pay @ Launch), we get a little giddy when something does land on our phones LOL.
And Samsung Pay is only still allowed because there isn't a "Verizon Pay" yet!
This sucks lol. I still haven't gotten it.
My wife hasn't either....
I still don't have assistant. Anybody else not get it yet?
Strangest thing happened with me.. I read that I needed to leave the Google services beta program to get assistant to work. So I did and uninstalled the beta version and updated to the current version. Almost instantly received Google Assistant. Then the strange part is it was gone after I used it once.. no clue why and can't get it back no matter what I try.
Many people are receiving their Pixel 2 with Camera version 5.0.009 and cannot update it to the new version 5.1.014. The difference is that version 5.0.009 does not allow Portrait mode on the front camera. When you go to update in the Play Store, it doesn't show an update. All you have to do is clear the data for Google Play by following these directions.
Go to Settings> Apps &Notifications> Google Play> Storage> Clear Data
Then check your Google Play Store and It should show an update for the Camera.
This actually directed me to update well over 20 apps, and fixed me pixel launcher issues. Thanks!
Google should release some update in the Play Store servers to push the latest versions when the user manually check for updates...

Yeah pretty interesting, doing this fixed a lot of software issues I was having (in particular the pixel launcher was janky and missing some features). In my opinion this should be something everyone should do once they have their pixels set up.

Update: within a day, the update showed up along with like 12 other updates. Its like google had to process that I had a pixel before it served me the updates. I recommend waiting a day or two and then reinstalling the stock one and seeing if you can install.
This didn't work for me but I was able to Google that APK and install 5.1

Yesterday, I received my new Pixel 2... and SORPRISE! Neither me haven't the latest version (5.1). I've deleted the store's data and I haven't seen the most recent version... Why does this happen?
I only got it through the link "apkmirror.com". I'm rather disappointed with Google.
Check Permissions
Check the Play Store permissions. As soon as I accepted the Location permission, all of the missing updates, including the camera showed up.
