Soft Brick? - Vibrant General

I was doing something with my rooted vibrant that prompted a reboot.. which cause my phone to either wipe something and this caused my phone to only go to the vibrant screen and not even go to the Galaxy S screen and not even boot.. so does that mean i have a soft brick and is there any way to fix this? eh.. if there isnt this will be my 3rd Vibrant i need to replace.. thats a good sign from samsung right? *sarcasm*

The search button does a lot. You should try it. Look in the development section. There's a way to get it back to stock using ODIN. Bricking the Vibrant is extremely hard to do. Damn near impossible.

So it's Nov. and I still have no OTA update.

I got this phone in early Sept. Running it completely stock except using Launcher Pro Plus. Haven't rooted it because it's hardware locked. I read that all the customers will get the update by the end of October. Am I the only one that hasn't received their update officially over the air? Should I just wait a couple more days?
I just tried dialing *#*#8736364#*#* to start software update and just got connecting to DM something in notification bar. That went away after a couple mins. and tried start software update again. Got the same results.
I would wait a few days and if by Nov 1st you don't get the update then you can call your carrier and ask them to force it to your phone.
Or you could just do it manually, which honestly I suggest, because I just like many others , got a soft brick when I installed the update over the air.
You can use the software that Samsung put out, Mini Klies , to apply the update.
here's the link: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=560&AT_ID=341559
I encountered a strange issue updating through mini kies. All went well, and my phone was running sluggishly so I did a reset and my build number went back to'eclair' but my baseband stayed ji6. I odin'd back to stock and I might just wait for the ota

I guess I can wait a couple more days. I waited this long. I'm just afraid of anything negative happening. My vibrant is hardware locked, so I'm scared to do anything to it. If the official OTA update messes me up, can I do anything to fix it, or get a new phone or anything?

Honestly, if you want to take an hour or two to read up on it, it's really easy to get rid of the hardware lock by flashing a fix through Odin. Yeah, it's daunting at first, but I took the plunge and now I'm a ROM-flashing whore. You probably don't need to read that much, but I did just because of my cautious nature. There's a thread in the Development forum with the fix and instructions.
My take is that it's far more likely the OTA will mess you up than using Odin (use v1.3!). Once you remove the lock, it's *almost* impossible to brick this bad boy.

Heh, I came from an ancient Blackberry, if that makes you feel better.
But yeah, using Odin is stupid easy (but you need to be on Windows AFAIK). Just to give you a quick overview of what you'll need to do, you need to download
1) the Samsung phone drivers,
2) Odin 1.3,
3) the hardware lock fix, and
4) the Android SDK (just for adb, which is like a terminal program that you use to boot your phone into download or recovery mode; since a hardware locked phone can't get into download or recovery with the buttons, you use adb to force it to reboot into download or recovery).
Use adb to boot your Vibrant into download mode, drop the right file into Odin and go. There are actually good Youtube videos on using Odin too (can you tell I researched the crap out of this before risking it?).

The word brick is used too losely around here. Unless you've messed with the boot loader, and can no longer get into download mode your phone is NOT bricked.
Bricked means your phones is just a hunk of metal/plastic that's good for nothing but a paper weight.

It is really hard to brick this thing believe me ive done it all, FCs, errors in clockwork, stuck on samsung screens boot loops and yesterday officially bricked!!!
The only reason it bricked is some charge card in a beta bonsai rom, but thats what tep is for.
And remeber if you can see something on your screen of your phone use odin or heimdell to go back to stock if you phone wont charge, gointo download mode or go on or go into recovery then its time to take it in and replace it.
Mnhertz26. Did you fix your epic too or is it another real brick?¿
I know what a brick phone is. Im just tired of people not knowing what to do asking questions that are already explanied and sticky on top of the page. Not researching will cause this problem until people realize that if you dont understand this then you need to read, read, read. I had a wm phone and if you flashed the wrong file...DONE. Atleast with the epic as long as it can get in download mode you should be fine.

Atrix will not boot

I am returning the Atrix back to factory so I did a factory reset from the phone, but it's not booting into the phone now. It stays stuck at the AT&T rethink possible logo.
Im pretty sure this was caused by the root. Anyway to get it to boot again?
Returning the phone back to AT&T, not liking the phone. I will never buy another AT&T branded phone.
EDIT: I forgot to unroot the phone, that's what caused it..

Yea. sounds like he rooted the phone and didn't un-root. Bricked the phone and now hates ATT because he has a brick.,
I am not blaming AT&T. I simply don't like the phone and forgot to unroot the phone before I did a factory reset. Now I hate it more that its bricked Maybe I should just bring it to a store and return it since they don't usually check to see if the phone is working.

[Q] How to Lock up your Nexus one (please read)

I want to demonstrate to someone how the phone can get stuck on something like bootloader or failed rom installations.
I currently have a nexus one with the bootloader still locked (but rooted). I dont want to try anything and render the phone dead. So I want to know if there is a for sure way t put the phone in a mode where it looks as if it doesn't work, yet be able to recover from it easily. Asking for opinions first.
I still want to have my phone maintained such that the bootloader stays locked.
Thanks

If i understand what you are asking, try backing up your rom, then flash completely different rom without wiping. That should by all accounts give you a bootloop.
Might be easier to have them watch some youtube vid's of flashing, rooting, unlocking, etc. They then should get the idea...
I would just nandroid and wipe my phone (I dunno how well that'd go I've never tried it but I don't see how it could totally brick your phone, who knows!)

For the record, I think this is a fair question, and not particularly condescending.
OP: You are asking a legit question, but you have to admit it's a bit of a strange request. You can't blame people for wondering what you're up to, I thought the same thing. Not that you were scamming someone, but couldn't understand why you'd want to do this (I get it now... sort of). It's an impersonal forum, so there shouldn't be any hard feelings.
One thing that constantly caused bootloops in the CyanogenMod forum was to flash the Froyo gapps with a Gingerbread install. Bootloop every time.
You could probably flash a theme that wasn't designed for Gingerbread. I'd bet that would give you a bootloop (especially the further you go back... flash a cupcake theme for a G1 onto an N1 )
Maybe I'm just being cynical but it seems to me that the OP is doing something shady here. He wants to do something that makes no sense and then immediately jumps down the throat of someone who basically calls him for it. His reasoning for why he wants to do this nonsensical thing is also pretty nonsensical. I'd guess he's trying to scam something from someone.

Yes, I completely agree with your first statement. YOU ARE BEING CYNICAL!!!
Ok as an avid lover of my phone (nexus one), I have the right to ask the means of breaking this phone if i'm going to root it and install a ROM which is only supported by the community that helps develop it (that includes primarily folks over at XDA). If you think I'm upto no good, too bad. Assume the worst, do whatever the F*** you want. All I'm trying to do is show my cousin what a bootlooped phone looks like. And apparently each time I am in the process of doing it, he wants to use the pc. He likes killing all the running apps when he's on the PC, and i need to stop him from screwing up something that can potentially f*** up my phone. I often switch from Stock N1 to CM7 to blandroid, and thankfully i follow directions which is why my phone hasn't boot looped til date.
Yes I jumped throat on the 1st person who responded, but look at my response before jumping throat. I didn't really think of the response as condescending, until had posted my answer, hence the edit.
Don't bother posting such crappy posts unless you want to feel like you're getting scolded by the DA's office for wrongful accusation.
C
Well you cannot blame people for coming up with these various speculations. My 2 cents, but you just redirect your energy towards your cousin more rather then get angry over forum post.
The way I see your situation is this. The PC used to flash your phone, who is the owner? If you own it, tell him to wait like a good little boy or he can GTFO of your computer, ban him. Or if the PC belongs to him, maybe it's time you suck it up and respect when and how he wants to use his PC, and flash your phone using another instead. Or maybe get a job and buy your own?
Time to man up. Either you tell him to GTFO of your PC, or you GTFO of his. Simple solution to what I see to a simple matter. No need to complicate things by semi-bricking your phone.

Well if it fails, then I guess I gotta try - or come up with - a different program. The thing is, I had two SGT 10.1, one recently went back to Best Buy after the ICS update started freezing up my internet (not tripping tho, I was able to get a raincheck for the Note 10.1! Good thing I got the Product Replacement Plan!: victory, so I have literally a spare SGT 10.1 to mess around with. I've already rooted it and flashed different roms as well as unrooted it back to factory settings. So, to be honest, I simply have a tablet for having a tablet's sake right now.
I'm actually trying to "hard" brick it. The thing is my little program works on a "soft" brick palette so it has (usually) been able to unbrick an inadvertantly bricked phone as well as the SGT 10.1. I'm trying to see if I can brick it without rooting it to see if I can resuscitate it back to working condition.
"hard"brick it means you'd have to produce an hardware faillure, You wouldn't be able to fix an hardware failure unless you change the part that failed.
IE: Your memory chip has fried, your CPU overheated FUBAR, this kinda things
Well mine is pretty screwed. Wish I knew how it happened so I can tell you, but I don't. Yesterday I watched a movie on it and put it on the table. Later when I wanted to use it, nothing happens.
If I plug it into my PC I can get it into APX mode, but thats all. The backlight doesn't even go on. On NVflash I get the rcm version = 0x4, which means I got a locked bootloader.
When on charge, also nothing happens. The camera flash just flashed about every 2 seconds. Same thing when I keep the power button held in.
I could try your app for you on mine if you want...
