hey guys,
am trying to connect to my office's VPN with my vario II. the default software provided does not seem sufficient. for one, i have one of those security key ring things which means my password changes every time i want to connect.
my pc uses cisco's vpn client...
any ideas? right now i'm just synching my exchange server with my pda using activesync, but wouldnt' midn having it on the go! there's no "external" access as such for the exchange server - it does have a web front end but its highly customized and isn't as easy as just configuring it as an external data source on my pda...

We use AnthaVPN at my university and it's supposed to work quite well with Cisco concentrator gateways, but be warned, if you have the latest 3.3 aku, you might run into problems like I did regarding loosing 3g internet connectivity on your hermes. However it could have just been a fluke as I didn't bother trying a fresh install of antha after a hard reset or anything since 3g is just as fast as my universities wireless internet anyways

I have installed this but can't see any way of configuring the VPN connection. How did you configure it?
You have to use the PC client in order to create a configuration file and then transfer the file to your device

bluefire is amazing. i bought it.
I came close to getting bluefire to work on our Cisco network... But once connected it would not transfer data.
I read on a seperate post here that alledgely the medianet unlimited plan uses the wap.cingular access point. That point is NAT based and some vpn clients do not like that... So they refuse the connection based on changing ip addresses.
I am not a networking expert so I do not know if this is in fact the case.
I do know I tried every freakin setting for bluefile and could not get a vpn tunnel from my phone to our Cisco vpn... So I gave up!

Well, NCP Secure Entry VPN Client works perfect for me with Lancom and other standard firewalls. And yes, configuration is made with a Win XP Desktop Application. Nice about this: They got a Desktop VPN client as well which will be configured exactly the same way. So if you got a working setting for your Laptop you can manually copy the settings and they will work on the PPC as well - thats what I did.

if it's that, this is not exactly what I expect because a proxy doesn't encrypt data as VPN do.
I want to use a VPN because public Network (or Network of a competitor) are not safe.
It's really easy to configure a VPN connexion on a XP or Vista laptop, but hard (for me) to configure it on Leo.

I have unfortunate and official information for anyone hoping to use PPTP VPN connections. Apparently Microsoft implementation of MPPE is not compatible with microsoft's very own mobile OS...shocking.
A supplier who was dealing with MS told me:

LT2P/IPSEC work perfectly with WinMo 6+ however.
There are 2 ways around this:
1: Find a software client that works with Windows Mobile and supports PP2P MPPE (none exist that I am aware of)
2: Find a VPN supplier who will provide you with LT2P connections. Though in my experience those are quite rare and expensive

Yes you can select PPTP in WinMo but it still won't allow any data to pass on a PPTP connection with MPPE (i.e. 99% of routers, services and providers) A major oversight at the Windows Mobile Developers Lab.
Aaaaanyhow, I found perhaps a complex but free method which works if your don't mind some of your connection being insecure.
1: You'll need a spare server (I have too many at home )
2: Set that server up to act as a proxy
3: Set that server to connect to your VPN Provider
4: Setup your phone to use your Server as a Proxy
5: All data will then pass onto your proxy which will pass on to the VPN.
Another much more secure, though complex method is:
1: You'll need a spare server
2: Set that server up to act as a L2TP SERVER
3: Set that server to connect as a CLIENT to your VPN Provider
4: Setup your phone to connect to YOUR server with the L2TP connection (which works in WinMo and is more secure than PPTP anyway)
5: Your phone will then send all that to your server which will securely pass all data to your VPN provider.
Et voilà, your phone will pass all data through your VPN. Not secure but it works. If you need a more detailed walk-through let me know
You could also try any of the L2TP VPN providers but they're rare and usually more expensive.

the second seems good... but though complex.
In fact, I don't know how to create a spare server at home, I don't know the material that can and should be use... and yes I'm a noob and I need help;-)

I also tried PPTP VPN connections via my HTC HD2 with WM 6.5.
The connection works fine:
- I can see on the W2K3 server, in the event log, that a new VPN client connected well (and I can also see the IP that has been attributed to the client)
- I can see in the active connection lists on the HTC HD2 the VPN connected
BUT, as soon as I try to transfer data, using VNC or Opera (for example), the VPN connection is closed!
What's wrong with this VPN implementation in WM6.5?
I'm really frustrated... Do you think it's linked to the unsupported PPTP MPPE?

Normally unless you have a Business account from TMO you cannot use VPN , because you are NAT'd and behind their proxy server, now it seems in some places it will work, due to different configs at that data endpoint, but, for reliable VPN on TMO you need their Business internet/VPN package ..

I dont think it's a carrier problem, because when I use my PC with dial-up connection on my phone, the VPN client on my PC works.

I'm having with trouble getting VPN to work on my Nook Color, running cm7.1 encore stable. It seems every time I enter my password to connect, the status changes to 'Connecting...' and freezes the nook. Has anyone gotten VPN to work on CM7.1? I'm outside the US so I would like to run VPN to connect to Hulu and Crackler...
Any help on this would be appreciated

I'm having the same issue with CM 7.1.0.1 (stable). Like the original poster stated in his post every time I connect to a VPN my Nook Color freezes and I have to do a hard reboot.
I use VPN a lot on my Android devices so it would be great if someone could tell me how I can get it to work on the Nook Color.
If you can use OpenVPN, that works very well for me via the OpenVPN Settings app.

My provider charges extra for OpenVPN so I'm stuck for now trying to get PPTP VPN to work on my NC.
I straight up have the answer for you. DroidVPN is in beta right now, search them on the forums. They will provide you with VPN for free. They require that you email them for a registration code and that's it.
Highly recommended. Quick connection and nice servers. Download and browsing speed mostly equivalent to what I was getting before.
Give them a try. You will need a tun.ko in your system/lib/module folder, but it is built into the kernel. I just bring that up so it doesn't seem to be a stumbling block to anyone looking into the app.

I already have a prepaid subscription to a VPN provider (StrongVPN) which allows me to have an IP address from anywhere in the world. I watch shows on the BBC iPlayer which only streams to UK IPs. I also used this before to watch Netflix while in Europe with a US IP.
This DroidVPN sounds fine for folks that aren't needing international IPs although I don't know how many servers they have and what type of speeds one can expect using them.
hi guys,the company i am current working at uses a proxy connection for accessing the internet.(you have to go through the proxy in order to access the internet).but the proxy blocked most websites,so i tried to use a vpn connection over the company proxy to bypass the internet restriction.The problem is ,vpn connections are not allowed to go through the proxy.is there any way to bypass the block to use vpn or bypassing the proxy?I am currently using my company's wifi on an android device.please kindly help me to solve this problem.Sorry for my bad english and thank you for any help.

The easiest solution would be to use 3G/4G and thus avoid any filter/proxy that your company WiFi has.
Assuming you don't want to do that, you should try to figure out what kind of VPN you're using. There are 4 main types:
1) PPTP - This one is old but supported in almost every OS natively (including Android). It's easy to setup a server for these using any Pro version of Windows. It's also easy to block.
2) L2TP - This one is more secure but also less supported. This one is also fairly easy to block. I think only Server editions of Windows can create this type of VPN.
3) IPSec - This is your Cisco-type VPNs. These tend to be more difficult to setup on the server side. Depending on how the network is configured this may be blocked too (but less likely).
4) OpenVPN - This is probably your best bet to avoid workplace blocking. You can configure it to use any protocol or port that you want, however it is very difficult to configure for a first time user. There are tutorials available online to help. You'll need an app (and maybe root) to use an OpenVPN-based VPN.
For anyone interested in data security the ability to encrypt network traffic is obviously important-- especially in light of the myriad of recent well publicized reports of private and government electronic snooping. It is also relevant to mention that to date no one has come close to cracking "TwoFish" encryption which can be used by SSH. With this in mind, consider the following tutorial which describes a method for encrypting all 3g, 4g, and Wi-Fi data, thus beefing up phone and personal data security.
Setting up a global SSH Tunnel on Android phones
This tutorial assumes the reader possesses a fully configured SSH server and rooted phone. In lieu of a server, (eg., the reader only has only a Windows-based operating system), research into CYGWIN is recommended. I use CYGWIN to run my SSH server and I have found that it is the most robust option for Windows users; however, setting this up on Windows can be a daunting task.
Setting up global SSH Tunnel on Android
1. Download 2 apps from the Google Playstore: ConnectBot and ProxyDroid
2. Install ConnectBot and ProxyDroid on your phone.
3. In ConnectBot set up Port forwards for your SSH connection. For "Type" field use "Dynamic (SOCKS)." For “Source Port” use 56001 or any local port not being used. The reasoning behind using port 56001 is this: System Ports (0-1023), User Ports (1024-49151), and the Dynamic and/or Private Ports (49152-65535)
4. Open ProxyDroid and configure as follows:
Host: 127.0.0.1
Port: 56001 (or the port you chose to use in step 3)
Proxy Type: SOCKS5
Global Proxy: Check the box
The above procedure accomplishes several things. First, ConnectBot remotely connects to your SSH server. Next, the ConnectBot connection forwards to the local port 56001. ProxyDroid then redirects all network traffic through the localhost on port 56001. Once you are connected through ConnectBot and ProxyDroid is activated all of your data will be tunneled through the encrypted ConnectBot session. This is an excellent way to set up a global proxy because it does not require manual configuration of any applications to connect through the proxy. You can test the functionality of the connection by opening up your phone browser and performing the Google search: What is my IP. If the proxy is functional you will see the WAN IP of the network of your SSH server. Additional and more thorough testing can be done with packet sniffers such as WireShark.
An application called "SSH Tunnel" is an alternative to accomplishing the above. However, I find ConnectBot and ProxyDroid is more elegant and gives better control-- not to mention being more sophisticated/chic. When correctly performed the ConnectBot and ProxyDroid method encrypts all 3g, 4g and Wi-Fi data on your phone. This is obviously useful for phone access of sensitive materials especially using unfamiliar or alien network connections. With the current proliferation of identity theft via electronic snooping on mobile devices I do not advocate using cellular phones for any banking or electronic transactions without setting up a robust and reliable encrypted connection.
I'm having trouble with this exact setup on Android 4.3 with DNS Proxy (proxydroid) enabled in China. When DNS Proxy is enabled, no traffic will come through at all. If I disable DNS Proxy, it works but without proxied DNS requests, I can't get to Youtube/twitter/FB.

Unfortunately, I have not done any testing with android 4.3 yet so I'm not sure why the dns request wouldn't be proxied. I'll look into it and get back to you.

So I finally had a chance to upgrade to 4.3 this week. I tested the dns proxy with proxydroid and it seems to be working fine. What rom are you using? I'm on Sacs rom and I would highly recommend it. Heres the link:

Tested on kitkat and is working fine. Ssh tunnel app not working however.

I was searching a big time for the solution you gave me.
First I was using SSHtunnel app from google play and it worked on my note 3 SM-N9005 (rooted) with jb 4.3. After upgrade to 4.4.2 kitkat (rooted) I could connect but there was no changing to my home ip in the browsers that I use with surfing by example to whatmyip . I also have a tablet "nexus 7" 2012 version upgraded also to 4.4.2 and on this device SSHTunnel is functional and the ip is changing??? I did not understand. Now I was searching for alternatives for my galaxy note 3 and I've found ssh connectbot and proxydroid. After I added the settings that I always used with dyn socks5 port 11723 on both programs.... -> connection to my DD-WRT router (with connectbot) was also possible. I also booted proxydroid and again after running chrome or firefox I still had the same ip so it didn't work.... Now I've found your post and read that the socks5 port must be above 49152. I changed the ports on both programs to 56001 in ('connectbot and proxydroid) and BAM! Connected with my home IP from outside my home :laugh:
The weird thing is that it worked on JB 4.3 with socks5 port 11723.
Now my woking SSH tunnel config -> Host = home-ip:7500 (default port = 22 in DDWRT)
user to connect to DD-WRT router = Root
password = Router password
dyn proxy socks5 port = 56001 as you suggest.
I have an app from my isp that I only can use with my home ip so I had to be home and connect by wifi. Now it's possible again with tunneling
Now the only thing that I have to do is thank you. :victory:

Does anybody know what type of private key this programm accepts? I have had no luck using putty keygen and the id_rsa I created in ubuntu does not seem to work either.

That's great news! I'm very happy that my post helped you, as my intention was to provide all the necessary information to do this in one place. It's not always the case that a user port wont work, but unless you are big on port level security it's not easy to determine if/when the port is being used. This is probably why 11723 did work for you, however it's always better to go with a dynamic/private port range. Also, if you want a simple way to improve the security of your ssh server change the default port from 22 to something else. You'd be surprised how many attempts to connect will be made by attackers on a daily basis.

Hi, the developer send me a mail saying that autotunnel should accept both private key types. None of them worked for me, though. He also suggested to try and paste the content of the private key into the bracket. I might give that a try. Edit: I can confirm copying and pasting the private key works. But it does not seem to transfer traffic via the the server, at least not the 3g traffic while using chrome. Edit 2: Turns out SSH Autotunnel does not use a socks proxy. Therefore secure browsing is not an option. The app is for secure pop3/ftp-server/smtp-server connections only. Thanks go to Matej for his kind support.
I've been using OpenVPN but I'd prefer to use ssh, as I have several ssh servers around the world, plus their pipes are bigger than my home line I have openvpn running on.
I have yet to get SSH Tunnel (apk) to work reliably; it randomly stops working and it's just a dead connection.
Using ProxyDroid unfortunately requires me to launch ConnectBot, connect ssh, then start the proxy. It'd be nice if ConnectBot could bring up the connection automatically, or ProxyDroid could do it. What I do right now is VPN unknown wifi connections and I can automate that with Tasker. I might look to see if I can automate connecting with ConnectBot then enable the ProxyDroid connection.
You can use ssh tunnels also with Drony if some proxy with authentication is involved. Works also on non rooted devices.

I think a simple bash script could be used to automate this task. I'm going to look into it; seems like an interesting/useful project.

I think so, it's just firewall settings etc.. Unfortunately for me, I need stuff that doesn't support SOCKS so I've gone back to looking into a faster OpenVPN service.
But this is good for browsing and things that use http etc.

hi have you figured out an automated script for this task via tasker, iv tried to create something but ended up no where lol.
Hi my collage wifi connection is proxy based
Whenever i surfed internet on that connection only some basic application are connected through that connection
But many 3rd party apps doses't connect by that connection like games
Any solution like connection tunnel apps or else
I don't want to root my device

Do you have to login to the proxy or is it an open proxy? If it's open, you could see if you can find a OpenVPN server that listens on 80 or 443. Then use any OpenVPN client on Android and you can add/update config to match the directions here: https://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/documentation/howto.html#http
