[Q] Camera.apks - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

So I was just wondering why all the Android builds are using camera's that don't pics in widescreen format like the Winmo camera does. I like to take pics of the kids and stuff and I prefer the wide pics using WinMo but if Im using Android I don't want to have to switch.
If anyone has a widescreen camera.apk they can post it would be appreciated, thanks

Which android build are you using? I'm using the one on my sig and it works great in portrait and land scape mode.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App

So does yours take pics in full screen or is it the 640x480 ratio? Can you post the camera.apk you are using? I just switched to Bangsters today

I also want one of those .apk's. My camera shows the images in widescreen when looking through the lens, but then are captured in a different ratio, annoying...

It's a minor annoyance but an aannoyance nonetheless

So anyone have any ideas?

in my understanding the camera in winmo is 4mp in widescreen and 5mp in regular?
just use camera 360, that has full features.

Yes you are correct and it's not necessarily the 5mp I am after but just the widescreen angle that Winmo shoots in 4mp. And those pics come out really well for me at least, I am just looking to duplicate that experience so I can take that quick shot without having to boot to Winmo

Vignette has full resolution camera. Love it.

Nexus One Camera Quality

I'll tell ya, the quality of the camera on this thing is bad ass. Attached is a panorama I shot with it yesterday.
The original is really high resolution too.

Glad you were in such a nice place. I was wondering how you took such a good panorama shot? (was it a specific panorama app?)
nice shot.. i too am extremely satisfied with the cam on the nexus. care to share the app you used to take that panorama?
I too am interested in that app
Sent from my Nexus One using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Not sure if there's an app that can be used directly on the phone but there's many PC applications that can stitch together a series of photos flawlessly like this. But if there is one on the phone I'd be interested in it!
And that's a beautiful picture!
It's not an app on the phone. I just shot the photos then stiched them together with Windows Live Photo Gallery.
All you do is put your photos into the live photo gallery, highlight them all, right click and select "make panorama".
The optimized version doesn't do it justice, the original is 7500 pixels wide. Took a lot of other ski photos, it was nice not needing a separate camera - every photo came out stunning.
Looks fantastic! Is that with the Desire Camera, or the stock Nexus one?
This is the Desire ROM Alpha 21. I would assume that this is the desire camera app, although I've never seen the normal nexus app so I wouldn't know.
Thanks for the info. The stock camera is good... but the Desire camera is way more adjustable. So far the standalone Desire camera app that PaulOBrien ported for us is the only reason I'd consider rooting.

5MP Camera on Android

So I was just wondering if there are any fixes to the camera on Android to make then 5MP. I know that the XTarantulla build has a 5MP Camera but I can't say the same for darkstones or dan's. Or at least I didn't get it. Also, I was wondering if there was a fix to make it 8MP like how we could go into the registry and edit it so that it was superfine and stuff. Just wondering. Didn't see anything about it here on the forums so I thought i'd bring it up.

First off, they are working on it.
if you can successfully find and pull the camera drivers from the XT build and put it in another congrats.
as for the 8MP, that's just silly. the camera only is a 5MP, it can't be set to take pictures better than the hardware is capable of
cyanogen rom by shubi has 5mp camera. it has proper flash exposure (no full white pictures) and camcorder with flashlight.

Maybe not up to true 8MP, but improvements can be done in software.
My old HTC Wizard's camera sensor is 1.3MP, with a scaled res. option for a pseudo 2MP mode.
Yes, it is not true 2MP, but an extra option over the standard 1.3MP.
This was done 4 years ago, why not now with our HD2?

Is there any hope that we might ever get 720p video capture?
Theoretically both the 5MP sensor and Snapdragon chipset are adequate, so is there any hope for HD capture?

I've been without an HD2 since mine broke a few months ago, been thinking of buying another HD2 to dual-boot WM and Android... if we can do HD capture I'm definitely buying one!

This is nonsense ...you can make it 20mp if you want in photoshop but you will lose quality. Ex there are 5mp cameras that are taking better pictures than a 8mpx cameras, the result is important!

The 8mp superfine hack in wm rom development has already improved picture quality, as side by side comparisons have shown, it's not true 8mp but the difference was noticable. The camera is capable of slightly more than its spec.

As I said, not true resolution, but an option available on a device 4 years old.
Something like that can be done for the HD2 also as an option, being aware
of some quality loss.

I thought all that did was reduce the compression, and the HD2 had huge issues with the camera in WinMo underperforming to start with, any of the improvements used in WinMo brought it to a standard your getting in Android already.

From looking at photo's I've taken previously in WinMo (With those teaks) and Android, Android comes out the overall winner, those tweaks for WinMo simply give you what HTC should have given us out of the box in the first place.
Android does not seem to suffer at all in the camera department, at least not for me anyway.

[Q] Fullscreen pictures on HD2 running Android

Dear all
In all the Android builds that I've tried on the HD2, I can't seem to find one that will take 5MP pictures in a format that automatically fills the entire screen on the HD2 when viewing the said image in an album.
I realise that the Android builds come from the likes of the Nexus One (3.7inch screen) or the Desire (again 3.7inch) - and the HD2 screen is 4.3inches, but some of the Android builds come with the option of the EVO camera, and the EVO shares the same massive 4.3 screen as the HD2.
I've noticed however that the 5mp picture outputs from both the stock Froyo camera and the EVO camera app (as well as the Camera360 app from the Adnroid Market) all provide a 5mp output image that does not fill the HD2's screen.
I would be grateful if someone would shed some light on this subject - my searches have proven fruitless as no one else seems to be complaining about this (hence why I think I must be missing something incredibly obvious).
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
(HD2 running NRG GTX Sept 14 and Bangsters 1.3b - but tried a whole load of Android builds prior to this current one! Radio 2.12.50.02)
Maybe it's because the HD2 screen is not 5M pixels and also does not have the same aspect ratio than a 5M pixels pic.... =P

The camera is, the screen isn't.
Thanks for the responses thus far.
So is there any way to get the camera on android to take a pic that fills the entire screen when looking through them in our albums (as it does on the hd2 running stock or cooked WM roms?). I would've thought the ported EVO camera would've done it as it was designed for a screen that's similar to the hd2.
Is there perhaps an app on Market that allows you to tweak the 5mp format to identical dimensions as those pics taken by the WM camera on the HD2?
Being a bit of a stickler for details, I find it annoying to scroll through my albums and see all the WM images filling up the screen perfectly, only to see an image taken whilst using Android (3 or 5mp) with black borders!
the picture's aspect ratio is 4:3, and hd2's screen is 16:9, that's why it won't fill the screen. You could use vignette to crop the picture to 16:9, but that cam app runs pretty slow on hd2.
winmo's camera has a wide screen option which crop the picture automatically.

Thanks for the info re widescreen, macoy - I did notice the widescreen option on the WM camera settings, but I would assume then the the EVO would also have a similar widescreen option as it shares the same screen dimensions?
Thanks also for the vignette app suggestion.
If anyone knows of any further app's on the market which have a widecreen option please do let me know!
I don't see the point of cropping pictures. Surely there must be a gallery app that zooms in automatically to fit screen?

Yes - there must be!
Or a camera app with widescreen options suitable for the HD2's 4.3inch screen (which is similar to the EVO's...)
I created a thread asking the same question a few weeks ago and have yet to see an answer to this. I have long wondered what it is, when I was using Froyostone v1 Clean the Camera had an option for widescreen but when selected it would still not take widescreen pics. Like the OP I am a stickler for the detail and I like the fullscreen view of the Winmo Cam. I only take pics in WinMo until a solution is found for this.

I'm surprised that this doesn't seem to be a big issue for most people - one of the "wow" features of the phone for me when I first got it (and indeed - it still impresses me) is scrolling through my photos at fullscreen, showing off the HD2's display in all its glory!
I can't believe that there's no way to do this on the HD2 running Android? Especially wih EVO and the upcoming Desire HD coming out (both sharing the same 4.3inch screen from what I understand).
I've tried searching as well using, and this, albeit not a big issue, is one of the cool things about viewing the pictures. Let's keep this going, hopefully someone may chime in.
Photos takin in wide screen are actually less than 5M.

I think the same. It's as the white balance doesnt' work fine, isn't it?
Hi
they are worse! thats just one thing!
the resolution of the android photo capture is 2MP (1600x1200) instead of the real 5MP (2560x1920). ant the light exposure whith the LED's in the dark is sometimes to bright... (white-balance)
(on MDJ's ROM's not sure about the other ones..)
the video recording is pretty good in image way: WVGA (800x480), but the sound is [email protected]!
did some re-search, with VLC.
The audio.
codec: samr
samplespeed: 8000hz
bits per sample: 16 @ 128kb/s (windows says 13kb/s)
Tje video.
codec: mp4v
sample rate:15fps to 30fps (varies from light and dark environment)

afaik the current camera apps have real 5mp.
a foto taken by my cam shows a resolution of 2592*1944 thats ~5mp.
but the white-balance with led flash is really a problem
I've just taken some photos and when I saw it on the pc, it looked terrible. My SE W610i (2mpx) takes a lot better photos...

Yes there is no arguring. Android photos suck compared to those in WM! I have tried to take photos with wm and android at the same time...
I noticed some diference. Forcing widescreen photo's does'nt matchup with the widescreen photo's taken in windows mobile. But nonetheless, i dont care. I just want a working camera on Desire HD build!!!! And I can't find a clue how far the developing is

I've actually noticed BETTER quality in Android than in WM. I made a post about it a while ago, but can't be arsed to find it now. The white balance is actually more realistic under Android.

I'd have to agree, all my android pics look so much clearer and detailed compared to the same objects/scenerys under winmo
I agree... photos taken with winmo always turnout better for me. But I can't complain ... atleast we can take photos with android. Most andrid ports for winmo phones can't use camera at all. We have a very good port for our hd2s.... but its still a port.
Alot of people seem to expect android to work as well as a native android phone. Amazingly our android port does function better than a native android phone with a stock rom in some cases.... but when you mod, root and put custom roms on a native android phone with similar specs, it definitely outperforms our ported android.

Is your camera/photos WIDESCREEN? (disadvantages?)

Are you folks taking photos in widescreen?
I found that, although it looks much nicer, when I use a camera app and make the camera take widescreen photos, and then look at the details of the photo, it is no longer 5mp. It seems it downgrades the photo to 3.2mp or something like that.
Is there actually a disadvantage in taking widescreen photos?
ps. how come phones like the Desire HD utilize fullscreen camera right out of the box but we dont?

The same reason older phones navigate the web more artfully, or why the similarly-powered SGS2 and single core machines can run Full HD .mkvs and we cant, or why our camera (still) doesnt take 1080p shoots: because several parts of our software isnt optimized.

web browsing in GB is amazing, smooth as butter. still use dolphin browser though
My widescreen photo's (the default) have always been 3.2mp -- even on Froyo. It's because of the way the photo is cropped. If you set the camera to 5mp, the photo's do not fill the Atrix screen because of the aspect ratio.
Yep, widescreen appears to take the 5MP roughly 4:3 and crop the top and bottom to make it something like 16:9. I changed it to the 5MP setting and always use that.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
So pretty much, even though the widescreen makes sense and looks proper on our phones, it is actually not a good option to use
i actually like it, looks great for landscape pictures, or long portraits. if you just want a normal picture then you should know not to use "wide"screen.
