32 bit or 64 bit and when i down load it do i save or run if i save were should i save it
thank you
What operating system are you using? XP, Vista, or Windows 7? click start, my computer, towards the left had side of the window you should see "view system information", click it. If you don't see the number "64" anywhere their then your running a 32 bit. Download the 32 bit (i personally click "save"). Then go to your download folder and run if from there. (right click and press if "run as administrator" if your using vista or windows 7) After it's installed. On the rom file you download right click and hit extract here or extract file if you have a certain place you want it.

anyone else ona mac that cant get on a pc figure out how to do this i wanted to flash via sd card and cant ? i guess soo what am i to do i am already downloading wine/macports/x11/xcode3.1
as directed by
http://davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/#part-5
anyone who acctually knows what they are doing wanna lend a hand i think im almost done waiting on terminal to finish then maybe run the update .exe
i don't have a mac or a tmous but here's my theory.
i'm pretty sure the .exe won't install under wine, however the exe is nothing more than a zip file that can execute itself, so first off i'd try using a mac version of winzip or similar to try open it as an archive, or if that doesn't work, try running winrar in wine and again see if you can open the archive.
(you could even try simply changing the file name from .exe to .zip, see how your compression software reacts.)
once you get it open you can extract ruu_signed.nbh and move on to flashing from sd card.
alternatively, something like bootcamp to boot to a windows install.(go for xp if that's all you're using it for) and then you should certainly be able to unzip the .exe, though i'm uncertain whether you'll be able to usb flash, even from xp.(i know you can't use bootcamp for hspl.)
ok
ok soo i downloaded the leaked version cause i cant get to download the offical download, but i download the zip file and im runing 10.6.3 (latest) it gets unarchived and i get the exe file and how w ould i extract it just opens up in a txt edit and get the usual symbol jamble.

For those of you who are uncertain of how to use adb commands or are afraid of editing their db check out the link below for more details about the app.
This is a quote from the site below explaining what it is:
"It's a Windows application that lets you sideload apps on ANY Android device, on any carrier, without the Android SDK installed. And you DON'T HAVE TO BE ROOTED"
Sideload Wonder Machine
***Note I am not the developer of this app or have any connection to it other than the fact that I happened to see the post and figured I would spread the word to everyone here. I have tested it on a ATT Captivate (which was already rooted) and it works as described.
so does this mean you can load any .apk file from the web into this Sideloader program and when the Captivate is plugged into the computer it will install it without issues?? and no need for modifying the no-market value settings thru root explorer?
Sticky Needed.
IT WORKS!!!
I tried this program yesterday and can confirm that it works
so its a cleaner way to install apk files into the captivate instead of editing the dbsettings file?? do I just save the apk file to my computer then just plug the captivate into the computer then select the file and run the program?
This lets you sideload any app (.apk file - android app file extension) that you can download on your computer, and it does not require rooting.
You need to download the samsung drivers for the phone (sammy website), upgrade to .net 4 (google search), download the wonder machine program from the beginning of the thread, and turn on usb debugging on the phone (settings>applications>development>usb debugging on)
Download an .apk somewhere on the net (I chose bansai blast as my first one). MOVE THAT FILE INTO THE FOLDER WITH THE UNZIPPED WONDER MACHINE. If you don't then you will get a "loader.bat" not recognized error when you hit go. Next, plug in your phone, pull down the notification tap and mount your sd card to the computer (I know that the instructions on android central say to keep your phone in charge only mode, but then the program will not find your phone if you don't mount the card). On the wonder machine hit choose file, and select the apk file you downloaded (again, in same folder as wonder machine program). Hit ok. Then hit go. It should pull up a dos looking command window and display your serial number (If you have a firewall like zonealarm, be sure to let the program access the net and your trusted zone - serial won't display if you don't) and a "press any key to continue." Do that and it should take a second to say "install successful. press any key..." Check your phone and the app should be in your apps list. Hope this helps, as it took me a while to figure all this out.
droid explorer offers better functionality. still, good find
with droid explorer am I able to copy the dbsettings file directly to my micrsd card then open SQLite from my phone edit and paste back into the origin dbsettings and overwrite it? or does that have to be done thru the comp??
I can confirm too that this program works great.
Sorry for the late responses but here they go:

That is correct, plug in your phone, place the apk anywhere on your comp, and browse for the apk thru the app. this then installs the apk directly into your phone.

With this app you do not have to edit the db, the only down side of this app is that you have to install the apks via your comp.

You are right, with this app you lose a bit of flex ability since this method installs via your comp. But for those people who dont want to edit or use the adb push method it could not get any easier. I personally end up installing apks when i am on the road all the time so i prefer the permanent methods on my phones.
this works awesomely!
just make sure to put the .apk's in the same folder as the sideload program
+1 to this. Not the most convenient method but quick if you have your computer with you
i hate logging into windows. I'd love a mac version!
but I do have this on my windows ( i believe it is an androidcentral.com app ) and i used it a lot until i started messing with my phone and learned about adb.
I just wanted to say thanks for the quick guide. I was concerned about messing around with the db settings and screwing stuff up. I have absolutely NO problem installing non-market apps through my pc--thanks a lot dude!
I've been using it. My phone is unrooted. I used it to add 2 apps. A live wallpaper and a need for speed game demo.
Thanks to all of you !!
by following all that you posted I was able to root with super user , save with rom mgr , load wireless tether which was my goal.
Just to update were i screwed up must remember with super user (update zip) put the whole zip file on phone as a stand alone not in any folder . With side loader must be in the same folder as side loader to work , of course with micro net 4 installed, on the pc and debugging enabled , samsung usb driver installed on pc and superuser must installed to use side loader
thanks for all you help !!!
I am trying to root my (my wife's) NC and I have on 1.0.1.
I am using WinImage and following the instructions.
When I get to the part where I select "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image on physical drive", I do that but in the box where I am supposed "to select a physical drive from the list"... I have nothing in the box to choose from.
I did the previous step in choosing my SD Card but for some reason when I go to the Restore part, there is no drive for me to choose.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Marc
Next to the file name box, theres a dropdown menu where you select the file format it looks for. Select "All Files *.*"
That should show the autonooter file you downloaded after you navigate to the directory you have it in.
Marc,
There's a how-to video at the following link: http://theunlockr.com/category/howto/android_how_tos/nook-color-how-tos/
Follow the How To Root Your Nook Color (Autonooter method).
You can also try win32 diskimager this is the program I used when I first started out, I feel its easier to use at first anyways....

My problem is I am not sure what exactly I am supposed to be doing and why. I am just following the directions line by line. If I am putting the "auto-nooter-2.12.25.img" file on my SDcard, can't I just copy it to my SD card (drag and drop)?

I should have explained better. I can't even get to the step to select all files because there are no physical drives for me to select in order to get to that point.

I know what you're thinking about just putting the .img file onto the SD card and calling it a day. The thing is that the .img file is an image of an entire, carefully configured, SD card.
This includes the boot sectors, etc. The author of the .img file took the time to make everything perfect on his SD card and then "zipped" it all together into a .img. When you use a tool like, say, Win Disk Imager, you will be "unzipping" the .img file to the SD card, effectively making it a clone of the original source card. The process of applying the .img file to your SD card is, of course, a destructive process. Anything on that card will go bye-bye.
I was also having similar issues...if I remember correctly, right clicking and running as administrator might help. Good luck...I hope it works. No guarantees haha.

I just copied the file using Win Disk Imager and it seemed to be a lot easier. Just select the file to copy, select the SD Card drive and click write... it renamed the SD Card to AutoNooter2 so I believe it worked. I will find out soon enough. lol

Yea, that worked. I needed to run the program as Admin. But I also did it using Win Disk Imager and it was easier. HA!
HELP! lol
It seems everything is working but now it is asking me to compose using "HOME" or "Soft Keys". I am not sure which one to select. Help please!
Just select Home. This is the launcher default you are choosing to use. Choose the regular Home launcher and make sure the app SoftKeys is running afterwards (it's in the app drawer). This SoftKeys app is a little button that activates virtual home, back, search, and menu buttons on-screen.
Also, check default when you choose Home, so it stops asking you.

One other question... when I download aps they don't show on the screen with my gmail, you tube (which won't work by the way. lol) and other shortcuts. Is it possible for me to put them there?
Duh.... nevermind. Once I rebooted, everything showed up on my home screen.

Hi,
I am pretty new at this. I have rooted my Fire and installed TWRP. Now I would like to install CM7. I copied the folders 'Update-wipeall' and 'gaps-gb-20110828-signed' to my Kindle as in the video but when I get to 'install' in TWRP I don't seem to be able to select either file. When I touch the folder, it opens displaying the files inside, and nothing is displayed in the selection area like in the video. What am I doing wrong? Everything else including backup seems to work fine so I know it's me at fault.
Any help appreciated.

Tap on the zip you want to install and TWRP will display the selected filename in the lower left corner of the screen.
I have tried this but it doesn't work for me. Nothing is displayed.

you copied the extracted folders ?
you have to copy the zip files !
I downloaded them on my Mac, maybe it unzips as it does it. Then I have been copying the folder to my windows machine. I will try downloading directly to my XP laptop.
Thanks,
bbc0
Ok, I downloaded the file zip file to my windows machine, copied it to my KF and installed CM7 which works very well however, now when I connect the KF to my computer, it does not go into the 'connection mode' but stays in CM7. Have I done something wrong?

Same happens to me - CM7 doesn't switch to USB mode automatically (and I haven't found any settings where you can change this behaviour).
You need to expand the status bar, click on the "USB/select to copy files to computer" entry and turn on usb storage.
Thanks, I thought it was just me messing up as usual.......
Dont forget about ADB folks... those three letters can pull and push pretty hefty images to and fro your device.
adb push name_of_rom.zip /sdcard/*
What is the benefit of using ADB rather than just moving files around using windows? I know there must be one but I don't know enough about it yet to judge.
I use adb when I don't have time to troubleshoot other things, or as androidcues said, very large images. Also, your problem with the original zips is that you needed to disable "Open Safe Files After Downloading" in Safari
good that it's working now !
with adb you can do a lot more as copy to sdcard
you can copy to system, install apps, edit permissons, change bootmode ...
use the search function if you want to know more
please mark the subject of the topic (edit first post) to [Solved]
Thanks to everyone. I feel like I am beginning to start to understand this stuff........kinda!
Used minimal adb. In recovery with mtp disabled I Pulled /sdcard/TWRP TWRP I had one backup and it successfully pulled because it took like 10 minutes and I watched it progress with zero errors. But I can't find the pulled files in the folder where I had the minimal adb installed. I also have 'show hidden files' on. How can I find the files in Windows 10? Is there something similar to 'disk usage' app but for PC like a file finder. The whole folder size in properties is 3.7 mb so I don't think it's there.
Hi... There is a buit-in file search in Windows 10...
I used a nice app on an older laptop which was faster than built-in windows 7 search, but i don't feel like it's usefull anymore on the new one which has a fast SSD... I give you a link if you want to try it though:
http://voidtools.com/
There's a portable version if you just want to try it...
Cheers...
