[Q] Apps Not Working...Saying Cant Connect or Fail - EVO 4G General

Ok first off I am a noob when it comes to smart phones and flashing. I recently got a HTC Evo and had it flashed to be on metro pcs to try and save a little cash on the bill. Well I think I am learning you get what you pay for. I am hoping I can get some tips or tricks from this forum. My phone will not run any apps really. It wont connect to facebook or the app store or google maps and youtube. Basicly all the social apps dont work. However if I connect it to WIFI it will run it them. Is it cause metros data service sucks. Any help or advice is appreciated. Again I am new at this and would love some help....thanks again

To be honest, you probably screwed up when doing the Metro PCS hack, and now your data connection is non-existant. Good job.

Just to give a little more detail. When I am at home and the EVO picks up my wireless connection all the apps seem to work just fine. Its only when I am not in range of WIFI and am forced to be on Metro Data feed that the apps dont work and give me the connection error. Example I can connect to to the app store when I am at home and when I am on metro data feed it wont connect. Any help is appreciated

Oh and I can get on the net itself...i can go to facebook.com and google.com basicly the net works but the apps them selves are the ones that are having the prob over metros network...

Dodging T-mobile's detection

Hey folks,
First up I know this is against my T'n'C's but we're talking hypothetically here ;-) oh yes and the fact that I was originally sold this contract for connecting my laptop and PSP to the internet even although it's expressly against my T'n'Cs so I don't feel wrong about doing it.
I'm trying to connect my laptop and PSP to the internet via my Vario II (aka Hermes) from t-mobile. Several concerns crop up
1. since i'm not on the pro package I'm not allowed to do this. Ergo t-mobile must not know I'm using a laptop.
How do they detect it?
I suspect VPN on the phone might get round it...although I've had difficulty configuring it.
Would opening a VPN from the laptop after connection decieve t-mobile?
As regards browsing I assume they're just taking the browser information that the laptop's browser gives them. I suppose you can spoof that somehow?
Lastly for the psp I simply want to stream media from my desktop to my psp when I'm on the move using 'pimpstreamer' - I doubt this protocol will be too noticable.
To effect this connection though I'd need to perform the 'wifi AP' hack I've seen talked about on the wiki....
Problem is I can't seem to find Internet Connection Sharing under programs....Is this something that can be tweaked to be invisable under the registry like the GPS module in the settings section?
Thanks again for your help folks!
If you have the unlimited data plan (only $20 a month), simply turn on Internet Sharing via your phone and select "Modem Link" or whatever it's called. Plug in and voila. The PSP, not so sure.
I have a T-Mobile contract also. You shouldnt worry too much. Even if they can detect it, they dont particularly care so long as you dont go over the 1GB fair usage limit. I connect my laptop all the time and have been doing so for the past year and a half. I even went as far as buying a datacard and using that and still no complaints.
Once, I downloaded 4GB of data via my contract when my internet connection at home went down. Not even a peep. Now I only use my phone for basic usage and connect whenever I cant find a free WIFI but I still use it.
In case youre wondering I have Flext 30 with Web n Walk but I only pay 18.75 GBP per month.
Dont worry and enjoy!
There's an awesome program in the development section that actually allows you to turn your hermes into a wifi hotspot. it connects to the internet through the phone's connection, then shares that connection over wifi. It works perfectly for me, although I rarely really need to use it. Very hand; I wish I could remember what it's called. Search "Wifi Sharing" in the development thread and you should find it.

OT: WHAT!? How did you do that! I've got Flext 30 with WnW and I pay 32.50! And that is with a £5 discount!
Its against T-Mobile rules to use Internet Connection Sharing?
I got it because I signed up as a Curry's Employee and got a permanent lifetime discount of 50% off.
Yes it is againt their terms of service but as I said.. really doesnt matter.. just dont do anything that would make you jump out. Dont use more traffic than you should. Dont use it for VOIP and dont stream music/video to/from it.
I know what you are talking about because I also use it on my Hermes. It's called WMWifiRouter.
I do it all the time and I've never gotten in any trouble for it. Then again, T-Mo EDGE is usually too slow for me to want to use it on my laptop anyways.
I just use it when there is no WiFi available --- the edge is a bit slow, but still VERY usable. Never had an issue either.
I'm looking into that WMWifiRouter, looks cool as hell.
Thanks to everyone for their advice!
That program looks amazing...The website is currently down however...
Any chance someone could email a copy of the program to me at
verylastninja at yahoo dot co dot uk ? It sounds like exactly what I'm needing.
Also the cached page from google says I need ICS installed. 'Windows\IntShrui.exe' - I've checked and there's no such executable in my windows folder.
Does anyone know where I can get my hands on this exe? I'm about to try googling but am worried about getting the wrong version
Your sim works in a datacard? that's cool. How much do those things cost? Never even thought of trying it
Lastly I should say I'm running Microsoft Windows Mobile Version 5.0 (OS5.1.195 (build 14955.2.3.0).
I'm very curious how you access via a datacard as well.
Ah.... Sony GC79/GC89 is built for tmobile!
Although I guess you couldn't use your phone if your sim is in the datacard. Any workarounds to use both at the same time with same service plan, he he?
T-Mo charges $49.99 for unlimited internet, wow... but only $19.99 if it's unlimited on a phone, could consider adding a new "phone" to your account with unlimited internet and just pop the sim in the datacard and go.
Suppose there's not really a lot of difference between using your phone as a modem and using a datacard mind you. So unless they're pretty cheap I'd probably be best sticking with the varioII
Anyone know about the ICS bit? I've seen people reffer to it before. (I gave my windows mobile version etc on my earlier post btw) at first I thought it would be like the GPS settings in control pannel - hidden by some registry entry by t-mobile (and I can think why they would want to).
However that file reffered too Windows\IntShrui.exe
also what's AKU3? Sorry for being such a clueless n00b on this but I've got a little bit of a steep learning curve here!
Pretty pretty please?
Ok found ICSinstall.cab on here and installed it, soft reset, and attempted to install the latest version of the WMWifiRouter program (which I finally succeeded in sourcing!).
However I get a message telling me cryptically that it 'cannot be installed' after attempting install. I wonder if this is related to ICS...
I now have the InShrUI.exe file in /windows/ *but* attempting to run it gives:
'The file 'IntShrUI' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate or one of it's components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file.'
I reinstalled it over itself (i.e. ran the cab again) same error.
:-/
Was this the right file? I seem to remember it was dated 11th January 2008??
Thanks again for hte help folks!

Tethering: Is there a way to avoid being detected by Big Red?

In my sig, you'll see my phone history. With Alltel, I paid a low flat rate for internet service that allowed tethering. Now that I have the Ozone, Verizon requires that I pay $30.00 a month for unlimited access through my phone. The moment I tether, Verizon recognizes it and requires I sign up for their Mobile Connect plan of 5GB access a month for an additional $30.00 a month.
That's $60.00 a month folks for a service I paid half for with Alltel.
Is their a way to circumvent detection? I'm a truck driver and the phone and computer are my only sources of entertainment while I am gone for weeks on the road. I really love hulu.com. But the limits that I am now restricted to makes it difficult to enjoy CHiPs (go Erik Estrada! lol...)
Seriously, I'm a Battlestar Galactica addict and I need my fix of sexy cylon ass. Any help would be awesome.
Try out
junefabrics.com PdaNet. Worked well with my Palm Treo 700wx as well as my Ozone.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how Verizon detects tethered traffic from handset traffic?
Its not so much that VZW can detect that you tether... its that they've locked down that option from your handset.(*)
I believe that on all VZW smart phones Internet Connection Sharing is either locked down or not even included in the phone's firmware. This means, from VZW's perspective, if a Cust wants to tether they need to get the Vzw Access software... so thats how they know and how they can charge you.
As mentioned in a previous post... pdanet does allow you to get around this. Its worked really well for me, although I've never gotten to Bluetooth tether to work :-(
(*) I have heard rumors that VZW has monitored traffic and has contacted customers who they suspected were tethering under the rationale that they were using too much bandwith w/ their smartphones. This is just second hand rumors though...
Use this and avoid the verizon tethering software.

Correct me if I am wrong... but, I looked through that thread and isnt that software package for Windows Pro?
The Willow(Snap/Ozone/3G) are all WinMo Standard. Also, I believe that before you can have a VZW phone like the snap broadcast as a WiFi spot it has to have ICS installed.
Sadly, I've tried to get ICS installed and have tried to get several different HotSpot programs to work an so far nothing has worked on my Ozone. If anyone has successfully done it and wants to share I would greatly appreciate it.
I thought there was also some number like *___ that you could dial when connected to the Maple as a usb/bluetooth modem as the dial in number that would let you access the data. I don't know if this would be detected.
Hate to say it but T-Mobile rocks. I tether all the time on 3G and no extra charges, 20.00 a month and I have unlimited data. Why anyone sticks with Verizon is beyond me... And dont give me the old coverage line, T-Mobile has grown a lot coverage wise and 3G will be nation wide by the end of the year. GSM is the only way to go

While T-Mobile has a great data plan, their calling plans are not great. I require national coverage due to where I travel. Alltelwas awesome, Verizon, not so much.
T-Mobile, Sprint, Alltel, and AT&T don't work locally at my house in appalachia, only Verizon. So, it just seemed the logical choice.
I wish Alltel stayed around.

When was the last time you checked T-Mobile coverage? I have friends that live on Brown Street in Appalachia, they use T-Mo.
This issue was my first to take care of. Use WMWifirouter. I use it all day, can teather via USB or Wireless. No additional charge.

Couple questions for you then...
Are you using the OZONE for VZW? And if so, where did you get Internet Connection Sharing since VZW removed it from the phone.
Thanks!
ICS is found here.
Download Here!
You may need to change some settings in ##778 before you connect. Here are some instructions I found on ppcgeeks.
Before you start using Internet Sharing, you need to go into EPST (##778 send) from the Phone Screen,
Choose Edit
Password= 000000,
Press View Info
Select M.IP Default Profile,
Edit DUN NAI and change it to [email protected] (this should match the above 'NAI' setting.)
Phone will reset. Now try using ICS. Should work fine.
I used the above method and was able to connect. wmwifirouter will connect to, so I may purchase that now.
Or just try that WMWifiRouter for free for a month, then buy it, no ICS, cool app.

WhatsGoing on here
I cannot download the link to ICS that was posted above (I dont know if it is dead or what) I do havea copy of ICS that i was using on My 6800 but when i Install it on my Ozone it says that it was for a previous version of WinMo. and when i try to install WMWIFIRouter It simply says "Jorrit Jongma WMWifiRouter cannot be installed. Try installing again to a different location choose a location: " Device or Storage Card. and Neither one of them work please help
I know a lot of you out there are using windows pc's but there are a few of us using a mac, with my mac I was able to set up a bluetooth modem connection without changing any settings or buying any programs. When you pair your device (I use a verizon Ozone) it will allow you to use your internet connection. The settings are available in drop down menus and are as follows:
Phone Vendor: Generic
Phone Model: GPRS (GSM/3G)
Username: <blank>
Password: <blank>
APN: <blank>
CID: 1
then I chose to show modem status in the menu bar and it makes it very easy to connect from there.
After that you may need to go to network pref. then to bluetooth and under the default configuration put in a telephone number of #777 include the # sign.
I don't know if this will incur additional charges I just figured out how to do it, I'll update when my next bill comes.
I hope this helps mac users and maybe sheds some light on how a pc user could get their's to work
They work with Window Mobile... I was told that they have a contract with Window Mobile and Window Mobile would report all internet usages on all phone lines to Verizon.
Hi all,
Don't you thing tethering is simply detected from the user agent ?
When I had this type of problems in France, I used :
https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/59/
This way, you can have you laptop to send the same uder agent as you Snap with, say, Opera mini.

What exactly does a ported rom mean?

Hey guys, I'm new here but I have some (nooby) questions. I'm currently using an iphone to tether my laptop using web2go from t-mobile. I got a g1 from someone and of course rooted and started tinkering with it so that I could get web2go to work on the g1.
My question mainly is if I port over say another android based os, like the droid eris os that is available, does that change the way the phone interacts with t mobile? Or would t-mobile still recognize the internal imei and not care about the os and settings? I'm mainly asking if I can port over another os onto the g1 so I can tether like I currently do.
I know there will be the people who say just buy the more expensive plans, but if I could I would. I'm tethering with these phones because I can't afford real internet!
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
Tmobile will recognize the IMEI although I have used the wireless and wifi tether's both and not had a problem on Tmo.
wait you use the 9.99 web2go? What settings do you use? Because whenever I try it has trouble "finding internet connection" or whatever. although technically the internet should still be coming through right? It's just being subverted by the g1's software that requires the higher tier services?
If its rooted, just use the wireless tether app. You can find the link here and put it on your SD card. Download Linda file manager from the market and use it to install the tether apk. From there, you will change your phones 3G or Edge signal into a wifi one that your laptop can use. You can use that on any rom, and it doesn't matter wether its droid eris or stock. The only thing that tmobile can see is your imei and your radio version, not the rom.
ok I will try this tomorrow and get back to you. Thanks for all the help
well I tried it real quick right now and I guess I forgot to make clear whats going on. When using the G1 as opposed to the iphone, the web2go subscription gets subverted. So while web2go works with a proxy on the iphone, on the G1 it does nothing.
I have the tools to tether except the G1 / T-mobile subvert the internet. I wanted to know if this was based on imei or on a software lock. Because I have heard of people using their G1's with web2go I'm assuming it's a software lock. So if I use a rom of an os that can run web2go, will I be able to use it? or will the imei lock it out?

there's only really two different os versions. well, more, but two popular ones. 1.6 (donut) and 2.1 (eclair). does the g1 have a data plan? does it even have 3g? you say you just got it, so if you don't have 3g, there's nothing to tether. as for it not working - if you're rooted it will work. there's also a app on the market (for now) called easy tether. just use the free version.
edit: read top post more clearly - no. you can't tether if you don't have 3g. if you can, it's new to me.
one more edit: you can do what my friend did - take an old satellite dish, hardwire it to a router, and just connect a lot of wire clothes hangers to the satellite's receptor or.. er... thingy and steal wifi for like miles. ha ha.
The thing is web2go is a data plan that can access unlimited 3g through a proxy. T mobile wants users to use their strict g1 data plan, so any other data plans get shut off. I'm wondering if it's imei or software. If its a software lock then I can just install a different rom I'm guessing.
When I tether with the same data plan on my iphone i get edge speeds, the main reason i want to get the g1 working is so i can get the 3g speeds
Ok, then try this. Go to the tmobile.com website, sign in using your number and password (or create an account). When you get to the screen that shows you a picture of your phone, select the option right under the picture that says not my phone, then select any other 3G capable, non android device. That should put you in the clear for a few hours/days/weeks/months, or whenever they decide to check your account.
Ok I tried it but it still didn't work. I'm starting to think it might be the g1 software which is helping shut off the Internet. I'm going to install a new rom and hopefully I'll be able to set the settings for t mobile. Will keep u guys posted

Couple of quick questions

Hey all,
I have a few quick questions, i have been using search but i havn't found my answers yet. I was wondering if there is a .cab for a barcode reader app like on android. Also is does anyone know if t-mobile USA has a fair use limit such as 5gb for data (i know verizon does). Also i'm having trouble connecting to anything online with my phone after updating to TMOUSA's new rom today.
check out omarket for a barcode reader, i use i-nigma, it does the job.
Tmo usa will definately have a "fair use" policy on data usage, it'l be in your contract or their site, the last time I checked in the UK it was only 1gb. They say everythings bigger in America though.......
Cant help you with your rom problem im afraid......

I think you mean that they didn't include an app for it? I've been using it since the HD2 came out (and before that I used it on my HD) and it works just fine. Pretty much all custom roms have it cooked in, but you can always just download and install wifirouter cab.
As for the limit, I believe it was 5gigs and has been changed to 10gigs (pretty sure it's one or the other). If you go over, I believe they just throttle you down but they don't cut you off and there's no overage charge.
no there is an internet sharing app tmobile is doing away with it. i bought my phone back in march and it had an internet sharing shortcut and worked up until this new update. it blocks communication to their network when the phone recognizes the phone is connected via usb
I'm not a fan of the WIFI app, i think WMWIFIROUTER is much better. It seems that the Wifi app on winmo just piggybacks on my wifi network at home and extends the range. I noticed that it still has the same hostname under "status" on my pc.

[Q] Aria - Still nice without data? Can Wifi be locked?

A friend has offered me an Aria for very cheap and I am considering getting it for my son for Christmas. I don't want to pay for data and at the moment I don't want my son having mobile porn ... err um.. mobile internet. So I am planning on disabling the data connection and wifi.
First question is are there parental controls on the phone or can I at least disable wifi and data and keep him from turning it back on?
Next, how much of the usefulness of this thing is tied to being able to use data? Will it still be worth it or should I just get him a txting phone for the same price? The Aria sounds a lot more useful than a txting phone, but is it really or will he be always running into stuff he can't do?
Thanks!

Wifi cannot be disabled to prevent someone from accessing a network hotspot and there are no parental controls on the phone. You can have AT&T disable data on the phone line.
You didn't mention how old your son is, but a texting phone may be a better option than a dataless Aria.
There are apps that you can use to lock apps such as internet. I don't use any so I don't have the names. I just did a market search to "app locker" and found a few.
My last Intruder was a Grumman A-6E.
I don't think you can use the phone without data activated, at least the AT&T branded version. If they know it's a smartphone, they add the data when you put in your SIM.
Really, they add data just by putting in a SIM even if its purchased out of contract? That's nuts.
We used an old iPhone for about a year with no data. So I assumed it would be OK for an Android phone.
He's 12 years old and I agree if I dont want data now a txting phone makes more sense. It's just a cool little phone that has more options like playing some games and music and that sort of thing. Then when the time is right, we'll open up the Wifi
But if I have to pay for data, that's not going to happen.
Thanks

They can't tell what phone you're using. The only way they could tell you are using a smart phone is if you're using an assload of data an a dumb phone data plan.
How much is the aria? I think it'd be better than any normal testing phone, even if he can't go on the internet
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
They can tell, they did it with my old blackberry when I let someone use it. I guess they can tell by imei or something.
They just started doing it, too. I used my blackberry without data until I got my aria, and then I let someone use it and they got a text saying they added data to their plan.
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
I wonder if they still so that if you get a non-AT&T smart phone.
The Aria was going to be mostly barter in exchange for helping with some computer problems. So pretty cheap considering I'd help him out anyway.
Thanks
I am certain you can call att and have that phone on your account without a data charge. As long as you buy it outright they have no say. But I would be certain to make sure with att that data be disabled for that phone.
I love the aria. But if it's texting you want it for, my suggestion would be to get another device.

Thanks. I'll give them a call before diving in.
I agree on the texing phone. Just trying to get some more flexibility for the future and encourage his inner geek.
I'll have to do some learning about txting phones, I know nothing about what good ones are.

If you have another phone (non-smart phone), when you start getting charged for the smart phone data plan just call them and tell them it's wrong and you don't have a smart phone...they'll ask you for the IMEI of the phone you're using...give them the IMEI for the non-smart phone that you're not using lol
Another option would be to root the phone (a safe and painless process with unrEVOked) and delete Android Market and Browser. If you are trying to disable data but still have games for you son I have to imagine that you are planning on side-loading apks, or at least you will have to after removing Android Market. No browser = no web. Phone becomes just a phone/texter, media player, and plays whatever games you decide to allow.
