HTC Magic w/ "unperfected" SPL: hangs with Cyanogenmod ROMs (and possibly others)
Hi all,
Sorry if it's yet another "my phone got stuck on reboot" post, but I've read hundreds of posts without figuring out what I have done wrong.
My HTC Magic from the French operator SFR returned from tech support (after a speaker fix) with a "perfect" SPL and a "standard" Android 1.6, so I could no longer install any alternate ROM:
SAPPHIRE PVT32B SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.007 (SAPP 10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.261
Jul 31, 2009, 15:49:25
To downgrade the HTC Magic to a non-perfected SPL, I followed Amon Ra's instructions (showthread.php?t=548218), created a Goldcard, and flashed ROM v2.53.707.2_-_sappimg.zip (Engineerings SPL v1.33.2010).
After that, my config was as follows:
SAPPHIRE PVT32B ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2010 (SAPP 10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-3.22.20.17
June 2, 2009, 17:27:03
Then I installed (fastboot flash) the recovery recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img. Note that this version wouldn't reboot (stuck on splashscreen "HTC Magic") until I removed the SD card - after the 1st boot, it worked even with the SD card.
From the recovery I wiped out the memory and cache, and flashed the latest cyanogenmod for the Magic (update-cm-6.0.0-DS-signed.zip). Everything went fine, but when I reboot, the phone gets stuck on the splashscreen ("HTC Magic") forever. I waited more than 15 minutes. I tried to remove the battery, and also to start without the SD card, or with another SD card - to no avail. I'm still able to fastboot and to enter recovery, so my phone is not bricked.
I also tried to flash other cyanogenmod versions (update-cm-4.2.15.1-signed.zip and update-cm-5.0.8-DS-signed.zip) with the same outcome.
I don't know what to do now. Give up and return to the Android 1.5 included in 2.53.707.2_-_sappimg.zip? Sad... If I should try other ROMs, which ones would you recommend (compatible with what is already installed)?
All that is terribly confusing and discouraging. Any advice about what to do next would be greatly appreciated.

I see that your radio is for 32A devices. Try to flash the 32B radio? I don't know what will happen, so letting you know in advance that it is your decision to take these risks.

Which radio do you suggest? The radio I'm using (RADIO-3.22.20.17) was bundled with Amon Ra's v2.53.707.2_-_sappimg.zip, which also included a 1.5 system image that seemed to work well (with that radio) on my 32B phone.

Or just download the EBI1 kernel available with CyanogenMod, then flash it after flashing the ROM and Google Add-on before rebooting.
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App

Thanks for your advices, but I think it's too late now, I'm afraid I bricked my phone...
After careful investigation, I found that I could reasonably try the combination of radio 2.22.19.26I (ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip) with an SPL 1.33.2005 (update.Engineering-SPL-HBOOT-1.33.2005-signed.zip) for my 32B Magic.
I planned to flash them from my NA recovery in sequence, radio first then SPL.
First step (flashing the radio) looked OK, at the end I did HOME+backspace to reboot and proceed to the second step (flashing the SPL). The phone did reboot and displayed the splash screen, but got stuck forever there... And no fast boot (backspace+power), no recovery (Home+power)... the brick!
I'm not totally sure I got the right radio. When I tried to download ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip, I found that there were several different versions: one for the dream + one for the "Google developer device" on the HTC site - a "ION" version, etc... I went for the "ion" version and apparently that was not a good choice.
I really think that it's incredibly complicated to find a secure way to do this. After hours of research on the net, I could never be sure that I was picking the right elements for my Magic. All this time spent represents more than the cost of the phone!
Thanks god I have also a working rooted Nexus one which doesn't give me headaches to update. Actually the Magic was my former phone that I gave to my wife - I think I'll have to offer her another phone
Cheers

This people is why those that say "oh no you have the the 32a radio on a 32b you may brick the phone" are self fulfilling.
The 3.x radio works on both the 32a and 32b but you need to use fastboot to change the 3.x radio / recovery to the 2.x versions.
Otherwise flashing a 2.x radio from recovery with a 3.x radio on any dream or magic system will always brick the system..
(Edit: also I think the ion/adp1 versions of the radio are the same, except for a device check in the install script. . But I have not verified)

I just read something today (too late) about flashing radios via fastboot in certain circumstances to avoid bricking the phone. But it was in a tiny comment in a section about how to unbrick your phone I wish I would have known that before.

I went through the same thing as you but got out of it. I tried flashing Cyanogenmod 6.1 to my rooted Magic and was stuck on the Vodaphone screen. I then read about the radio and tried that and the phone was then bricked. What I did was follow the Gold Card procedure again with the update.zip on a formatted micro sd and the sappimg.zip on the gold card. you will need a USB micro sd card holder as the phone is bricked. Then I used the cards in my phone and this got my phone back. Once I had Fastboot capability again I found the latest zip file for superuser and flashed it to my phone (no wipe). Then I installed Rom Manager and installed the latest version of ClockworkMod recovery. You may have to do this install through Rom Manager 2-3 times before it actually installs. It says it has installed successfully but the reason the phone hangs at the splash screen is because it needs to boot to recovery to complete the install of cyanogenmod. you can test this by using 'boot to recovery' from the Rom Manager after the install of the ClockworkMod recovery. If it hangs at the splash screen, then it hasn't installed properly. Just take out your battery and power up the phone normally then use Rom Manager to install ClockwordMod recovery again. Once you get past this, it is all plain sailing. Just install the latest CyanogenMod 6.1 for the HTC Magic(GSM) and the Google Apps (3 files in total), Back up the current Rom, wipe and install. This worked a treat for me. Hope it works for you.

HTC Magic won't boot after reset

Hi all,
yesterday I got my HTC Magic but there was Hero ROM on it already. First thing that I have done is a master reset (hold HOME+BACK and power On, then press trackball), because I like to start fresh with new fone, don't want to have old user settings and customization.
Now phone doesn't boot. It boot to the HERO logo but that's all. After HERO animation, it start loop, HERO animation starts again until the battery is removed.
Please help. How to solve this problem, I'm OK with HERO ROM on the Magic or with the original ROM.
So what to do? Thank you in advance.
You just need to re-flash the ROM. So find a Hero ROM or some other ROM that fits the board (either 32A or 32B), and put the update.zip on your SDcard and go to recovery mode and flash it.

Cheesebaron,
thank you for you replay. Can you give me some more instructions, I have Android phone for less then 24 hours (read: he is n00b) and which is procedure for flashing? How to go to recovery and start flashing part? Part for the zip package is OK, I can do that via micro SD card reader.
edit: And please if someone can post link for Hero or default Magic ROM that will work OK, it doesn't matter for first time, goal is that phone start working at all.
OK, so far I have managed to install various ROMs to my 32B Magic.
So I have some new questions:
On which ROM all features are 100% working?
Which ROM is closest to default ROM?
This is my config:
sapphire pvt 32b ship s-on g
hboot 1.33.0004 (sapp10000)

Phone Stuck On HTC Magic Logo

So my phone is stuck on the HTC Magic logo. I don't think it is bricked because I can still access fastboot and Hboot no problem. This all started happening after I went to an older radio and back to the newer one. Now when I turn on my phone it is just stuck on the HTC Magic logo. Why is that? Thanks
By the way here is the info on my phone
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT - 1.76.2007 (SAPP50000)
CPLD - 12
RADIO - 6.35.10.18
What rom did you flash? If you flashed the cyanogen test5 make sure you flash the port file by pershoot or bcrook which will allow the rom to boot past the screen where you are stuck.
yeah I did want to flash the cyanogen t5 but when this happened all I was doing was changing my radio...anyways I've downloaded the bcrook port so what do I do from here?
it was radio rom 1.33.2010
Re-Read // Flash the old version of the radio that was working back on your device via fastboot.
Then if you backed up your phone with recovery -> Nandroid restore it to that point.
Read more into the radio versions and for what boards, and then flash the appropriate radio.
Should be all gravy from there~
_________
EDIT:
This happened to me and after a litte the phone completely stopped working and TMobile sent me a replacement phone.
Be careful when flashing radio's etc.
Does anybody ever read or use the search function?? I mean if they were to read the posts even. On the first page, there is like 3 posts with the same issue.

Can't Access Recovery

Before you read, if you can't help, don't post criticizing.
I am fairly new at all of this and understand that this is purely my fault and I did something wrong. Before I call my phone a brick (which, by definition it is not) I thought I would see if anyone had any ideas on how to fix it.
I tried preparing my system to be able to use SuperEclair. I flashed my Radio to 6.35.10.18 and my SPL to 1.76.2007. I then put Amon_RA's recovery (1.6.2) for the 32A board. I boot up my phone and try to put it into Recovery Mode, doesn't work.
I then try to start anew, and reload the sappimg.zip using my gold card. It hangs on Radio2.
I then go to fastboot mode and try to redo the radio there, along with re-flashing the SPL and recovery. The radio goes through the whole process, but at the end of it, it hangs as the red bar reaches the top.
Basically I am stuck on Radio 6.35.10.18 and I cannot access recovery.
My phone is a Magic1.2/MyTouch3G w/ 3.5mm jack.
Basically:
Sapphire Unknown 32A ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2010
CPLD-13
RADIO-6.35.10.18
I can access fastboot (Power+Back) and Hboot (Power+Volume down) modes. I cannot access recovery (Power+Home). It hangs on the first splashscreen that says "HTC Magic".
I have read things about using Nandroid, but I have no experience with this. If you have an answer, but no time, just reference it and I can do my own research. Any help is appreciated.
Mod edit: not dev related, moved to general

Hello. There is a new AmonRA recovery. 1.7.0. I think what you did was make a mistake at what recovery you installed on there. Do you have a T-Mobile branded MyTouch3G?
I have one of those with a 32A boards. However mine says "G".
What AmonRA Recovery did you use? (G or H)
T-Mobile branded MyTouch.
I used the H version of the recovery.
Let me try using the H version of 1.7.0.
I have a T-Mobile MT3G. Mine is a "G" try using that one.
Did G work?
Everything is fixed. I suppose I was using both the wrong release and/or the wrong version.
Thank you very much.

Magic stuck on "htc magic" boot screen after Engineering SPL... and bad Nandroid, ugh

Magic stuck on "htc magic" boot screen after Engineering SPL... and bad Nandroid, ugh
Please help, I'm stuck on a boot screen, compounded by an apparently bad Nandroid backup
I just got a Rogers Magic so I can get 3G on AT&T. (couldn't with my T-mo G1) Rooted it, installed the RA-Sapphire recovery and took two Nandroid backups (one with, one without Ext)
Here was my starting point:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT- 1.76.0010 (SAPP50000)
CPLD-12
RADIO- 6.35.10.18
Plan was to install Cyanogen 6.1.0 (like my G1). This requires that I downgrade the radio, and I was planning on using RadioSwitcher tool to make life simpler.
The tool requires an engineering SPL be installed, and points to this Magic SPL Hboot collection thread
I've downloaded and/or tried (in this order):
Stock: 1.76.0010 (as noted above)
Engineering SPL 1.33.2010 (from the SPL collection thread the tool instructions pointed to)
1.76.2007 SPL (from the Cyanogen Wiki on Magic 32A with 6.35 radio)
Engineering SPL 1.33.2009 (from the SPL collection thread the tool instructions are pointed to)
So when I tried using the tool to switch the radio to a Radio_HTC_PVT_32A_3.22.20.17 [supplied], I got these results:
Stock 1.76.0010 - tool won't update radio without an engineering SPL. Device boots up no problem.
Engineering 1.33.2010 - tool uses Fastboot, I see progress bar, then screen goes black and tool reports "Radio update: FAILURE". Device now won't boot, hangs on "htc magic" boot screen.
Tried to restore - Nandroid restore issue noted below.
Engineering 1.76.2007 - same progress bar/black screen, update "FAILURE", and device won't boot.
Engineering 1.33.2009 - same progress bar/black screen, update "FAILURE", and device won't boot.
(I tried posting on that Radioswitcher thread but it's locked or closed or I'm just not able to post on it.)
I don't feel comfortable randomly trying SPL's, especially as I'm guessing there's simply a lack of understanding on my part as to which SPL is compatible with my current phone/radio. I'm hoping someone here can help with that.
Currently, this is how the phone sits:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT- 1.33.2009 (SAPP50000)
CPLD-12
RADIO- 6.35.10.18
...not able to boot, not able to restore:
I can get into recovery, but it's also testing me:
When I try to flash anything from SD, I get "E: can't mount SDCARD:" If I select "USB-MS Toggle" then disable it and come back, then it appears to work - but doesn't give me warm and fuzzies.
Nandroid restore - either backup gives "Error: run 'nandroid-mobile.sh restore' via adb!"
That really makes me uncomfortable and puts me a bit out of my comfort zone - I was counting on the Nandroid backup as my safety net... never had any issues with my G1 and Clockworkmod recovery.
Thankfully, I have the trusty G1 I can plug my SIM card into to use as a phone...
But I really need to get this working or it's a lot of money, and hopes, down the drain.
Help - please!
I used this guide to root my phone to begin with - I see there's an engineering SPL option in there also.
Although I said I wasn't going to try pot-shot SPL attempts, this was part of the rooting process I followed originally, and someone suggested that I try that one.
I can't boot my phone so I couldn't follow that process exactly, but I extracted the SPL file from that zip file and put it on the SD card using my PC, then booted into recovery to flash that Eng SPL...
...and still the Magic won't boot up. I can't tell if this is even any different than the previous SPL - or rather if the problem preventing boot is a problem, if it's tied to the SPL (numerous SPL-swaps would seem to indicate no?) and if it's different.
Now I'm here:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT- 1.76.2007 (SAPP50000)
CPLD-12
RADIO- 6.35.10.18
Stop...you have an eng spl... Thats all what you need!
You are working the BLIND...
For every spl there are matching radios...
For the 1.76.2007 spl, you can use any 6.35 radio for magic.
For the 1.33.20xx(xx can be 04,05,10) you can use 3.22 radios.
All the above are eng spl, which basically gives extends read/write permissions.
With the eng you can flash what ever partition you want, e.g. system, radio or recovery.
The reason you can't boot is that you have **** up your system.... That we can fix easy :0)
Radio/spl **** ups -> not to so easy to fix.
You have a good combo now, let's get you a good system.
First, you need to flash a different recovery to make sure it works with the 6.35 radio.
Download my fastboot commander tool (magic version, check my signature) and it will do it for you the easy way.
When you have the tool, go to magic 32A tab.
There you can find two buttons, one for 6.35 radio combo a.k.a new radio.
You also find one for 3.22 radio a.k.a. old radio.
The tool will flash an entire combo of radio, spl and recovery that matches :0)
so... this what you have to do, choose 1 and only 1:
1) use the tool to flash "new" combo, reboot into recovery and flash any rom that is for the new radio (6.35). Check out the development sections for roms.
2) use the tool to flash "old" combo, reboot into recovery and flash any rom that is for the old radio (3.22). E.g. cyanogenmod from this page:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_version#MagicCM6
Remember to flash the EBI 1 kernel or else the system will not boot.
The gapps (at the buttom of the page) are optional but recommend :0)
Good luck, and stop working the BLIND!
Sounds good...
Should I expect that after flashing the "old" images, that I'd be able to boot my phone into the stock OS again (1.5 with Sense)?
Or should I just skip that [if that's not a good test] and just proceed with loading the Cyanogen ROM?
Very much appreciated, and thanks again.
Also, one thing I'm concerned with - I've seen some notes along the way that the Magic requires a custom Kernel to install Cyanogen... I'm not sure what the Kernel really even is. Do you have any insight into that?
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=How_to_build_a_kernel_port_for_CM6
I've got the 32A - but those instructions are hardly 'download this file and flash':
"If you want to build a EBI1 kernel port package to get it to run on a 32A Magic (with 288 MB total RAM), or a phone with the 3.xxx radio such as the Rogers 32A Magic and Rogers Dream, then you can follow the instructions below:"
...and those instructions are long, and most intimidatingly - vague (much is implied, not all explicitly stated).
Yikes...
..........
I flashed the "old", and the phone now gets stuck in a boot loop on the "Rogers" (before the "HTC Magic" where it was getting stuck before).
The recovery is still the RA-sapphire-v1.7.OH... is that the Amon Ra?
I'll take a backup in this state, test-restore it (I know from experience with my G1 that the "HTC Magic" splash screen will be replaced with a Cyanogenmod one, with the Cyano 6.1.0) then put the Cyanogen on there and cross my fingers that I don't need to mess with that Kernel procedure...
EDIT:
I have a backup that restores - unfortunately it puts me back to the original "can't boot" state, lol.
Anyway, so after I took that backup, I proceeded to flash Cyano and the tiny Gapps.
I'm still getting hung on the Rogers screen - the Cyanogenmod boot screen doesn't come up.
WTF, you know?
EDIT 2:
I forgot to list my current state:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2010 (SAPP50000)
CPLD-12
RADIO-3.22.20.17
Let me know if you can help, thanks
i think now you can boot into recovery and wipe everything and then try to flash the rom from sd card/
READ what is written...
You are still messing **** up...
You cannot boot ANYTHING until you get a working system on the device...
You keep "booting" to nothing because there is NOTHING to boot...
STOP for a second and READ.
I have giving you 2 options... do one of them...
The Cyanogenmod need EBI 1 kernel which you can find on the same page i gave you..
if you read the instructions, you also find i have written that...
Once again to be sure, flash EBI 1 kernel after the CM rom, then you flash gapps and you should be good to go...
Or flash "new" combo and download this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778083
I can't help any more if you don't READ before you act!
I did... wanted to take it one conservative step at a time... operating with a bad backup here... ;-) And that Kernel page on the Cyanogen wiki is just evil... it should have a source to download one and apply, for us mere mortals lol.
I downloaded an already built, already compiled EBI1 kernel, and that did work nicely. Phew.
Thanks for the tool and the help - I couldn't have done it without your help.

Does your phone boot into the ROM?
I should probably explain a bit:
So my phone is caught at the "HTC Magic" screen at the startup. It won't go on any farther than that. When I hold down the VOLUME DOWN key and press the END key, I can bring up the screen that states the following:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT- 1.76.0010 (SAPP50000)
CPLD-12
RADIO- 6.35.10.18
The screen does give me some menu options:
HBOOT
<BACK> FastBoot Mode
<SEND> Simlock
When I press BACK, I get another set of menu options:
FASTBOOT
<VOL DOWN> HBoot Mode
<SEND> Reset Device
<ACTION> Restart to HBoot
<MENU> Power Down
..did that answer your question? ..i'm not sure.. LOL!
Yeah, so it's not booting into the ROM. Did you have root before? Did you have a custom recovery installed? Can you get into it by pressing home+power?
I bought the phone off of ebay so I don't know what was programmed on the phone before I got it.. :/

The HOME+POWER buttons bring me to a screen where there's a picture of a "!" inside of a triangle by the phone..
Your going to have to root using the goldcard method. A Google search of "root 32A magic goldcard" should get you were you need to be.
Okay, so I'm sorry to be such a noob, but I got everything ready for a Goldcard (cable and a new kingston SD), but then what I need is to set up the ADB which requires me to connect the phone to a computer.. I cannot access anything on the phone via the computer except for the memory.. the drivers won't install.
I'm using this website's instructions:
/theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/[/url]
So, the second step is to create an ADB, and then the third requires me to access the phone itself and unmount the SD.. I'm kind of at a loss at this point..
what should I do?
You'll have to see if a friend has a phone that you can borrow to make the goldcard. The steps will be the same and it'll work on any phone running Android.

[Q] HTC Magic 32B bricked? - Access to fastboot but no way to flash anything

Hi Everyone,
I own a HTC Magic 32B (Sapphire) and flashed it several times with different ROMS during the last months with no problem.
2 days ago, I decided to downgrade it to 1.6 Donut since I can't even write a sms properly with higher versions (Cyanogen, Vodafond OTA included)
I started wiping and tried to flash the rom but I faced radio and/or hhoot version issues and there began the nigthmare
At the moment, I've nothing loaded on my internal storage, only a sappimg.nbh on the sdcard. I finally succeed to install alternative drivers on my computer to make fastboot working and tried to flash dozens of different nbh/zip/img (radios, spl, hboot, recovery) without success!
So now, i have a soft/hard bricked phone with no idea on how to fix it.
Several infos to help you understand my case:
- Home + Power gives nothing, just the G1 logo
- Power + Volume Down let the phone detect the nbh file stored on the sdcard but when i start the update, it freezes at the first step (radio_v2) but no issue with signature checking
- Power + Menu gives access to the fastboot menu. From my computer, no way to flash any kind of file (signature checking fails everytime)
Below are the information provided by the "Android Skateboarding screen"
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G (i tried to switch security to off => no way)
HBOOT-1.33.0013d (SAPP10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-1.22.12.29

If you have any idea or beginning of an idea, just let me know
Thank you so much
Bertrand
Same issue here (from a newbie).
I downloaded to Donut per Unlockr's instructions but couldn't get any new ROM's to load, so tried Clockwork Recovery. Now the phone boots up into Donut and HBOOT correctly, however will not boot into Bootloader.
same problem here :S cant flash anything cant get anywhere.
Find a sappimg.nbh or zip and flash In hboot. You might need a goldcard
