I have been trying to figure out a way to choose wifi or 3G when i want to surf. For instance if i click on the intrrnet app and it should give me an option, to surf through a wifi or 3G service.
What happens now is that it just connects difrectly but i do not now which service it is connected to. How do i achieve this option or at least get the option to surf through eithet wifi or 3G?
If you don't know what connection it uses you should at least read the manual or find out the icons from somewhere else.
Have you set up wifi in the settings? If there is no wifi available I believe it uses 3g automatically.
There is widgets to turn connections on/off.

That would be quite annoying to get the pop up everytime you open the internet up. It uses whatever connection you have active. If you have wifi and 3G on, and you are on a wifi network then wifi will override the 3G (and save you battery in the process). If you have 3G on and wifi off, 3G will be used. However, if you have no connection, a popup does come up saying "please connect to a wifi network" when you click the box, it brings you to the wifi settings, where you don't have to hit a single button and it will turn wifi on and bring you right back to the page where you were (honestly, this might be different across firmwares, but if you don't have it then expect it in the 2.2 update).
So, how to fix the problem you have, I have two recommendations for you:
1) QuickDesk, it's a UI screen that will pop-up over any program you have running without exiting the program (even games). Double-click of home button will allow you to access 1 page of apps (such as a wifi on off switch or power control widget...see below)
2) Power control widget, or at least a wifi on/off toggle switch. Before I had an always on 3G this was a widget I never lived without. I'd have wifi off 3/4 of the day and 3G on 95% of the day, meaning if I wanted to connect to the internet I wanted something easy and simple to use... a simple wifi on/off toggle will work. I would sometimes forget to switch 3G off when I'd get home and half way through looking at web pages I'd think about it, so I'd double click home, find power control widget and activate wifi to override the 3G connection as I originally described.

Thanks. Thats the answer I was looking for. I have both services activated and they are active in the bar at the top of the screen; that is why I asked to see which one was actually being used in this case. So if both are on then Wifi takes perference over the 3G? Good to know this. I take it I can ger this on/off widget in the Market. I'll see if I can download it. The widget method sounds better.
BTW, just checked out the Market and there are quite a few. Any particular one that you guys recommend or just any will do-? I just downloaded the one by Curvefish
Now looking for one to turn off the 3G.
I think power control widget comes out of the box long press on your screen and go to widgets to look for it. As far as 3g goes you should be able to program a shortcut instead. Long press then access settings which should bring you to individual settings you can program like 3g toggle...ank program off the market will do just fine but I prefer to not give access to my phone unless necessary.
when both WiFi and 3G/H are ON
it will by default use WiFi
if WiFi fails or signal is poor, it will automatically switch to 3G/H
you will see the icon at the top of the status bar

When I'm in the house (and assuming I've got the wifi switched on on the Tytn 2), how do I get it to use the Wifi to access the Web as a first option?
Even when its connected to my wireless LAN (which it does with no problems at all - much better than my old Wizzard), if I launch Explorer it automatically makes a GPRS connection. The only way to force it to use the Wifi seems to be to turn the Phone off in the comm manager - which then means I can't receive any calls.
I can't find any setting that dicates the network hierachy i.e. that says if there is a Wireless LAN connection then don't bother with GPRS, or if there isn't, then use GPRS.
I seem to recall there was something similar on desktop Windoze where you could have it automatically use a dial up connection if there was no LAN available.
Can anyone help?

I'm now getting the same thing using Emoze - the thing is sitting here connected to the Wifi & will sync mail & contacts etc over the wifi quite happily - but as soon as I try & send mail from the handheld it starts up not one but two GPRS connections (!) Much the same as if I try & get a web page up - it automatically goes to GPRS as its default route to the internet despite that fact that its already connected via wifi & the only way to stop this behaviour seems to be to switch the phone off in Comm Manager.
Seems to be something inherrantly odd about the way the Tytn 2 is deciding what network connection is available & which it should use. It looks like it needs a little control application to sit between the IP stack & the hardware so that when a request comes it can be routed according to user preference - i.e. Use WIfi if available, Only use GPRS etc The Wifi doesn't seem to fire up a connection when it feels like it - only the GPRS. Do all the HTC devices with WIfi behave this way?
In the meantime, does anyone know of a simple way to turn off/disable GPRS without disabling the phone?

I use 3 different wifi networks during the course of a day, well 2 a day, 3 through out the week probably. Home/Work/Friends house
I have a very small data package (5mb) so i am very choosy about when I use my data connection!
Anyways, did some testing.
I already know that if I have no wifi, no data connection on, then I try and start outlook or Internet Explorer, then my data connection starts up (as it should)
now if i have my data connection on, then i turn on wifi on the phone, the wifi connection takes over and the data connection is not being used, even though it's on.
I also have no problems with when wifi is on and data is off, and if i goto outlook or IE, that gprs decides to go on. this does not happen tome (unless for some strange reason wifi cuts out, gprs tries to take over)
So i dont know if its something with your settings or not, maybe your phone goes to sleep and wifi turns off then gprs takes over, or i could be misunderstanding your question, because now that I think about it, perhaps you are asking something like..
- at home no wifi or data connection is active at that moment
- you navigate to a page in IE and instead of gprs turning on, wifi turns on/scans for lan and uses that

You should be able to use the comm manager to turn off the data connection, but as for keeping it off permanently, until you decide you want it to be even allowed to be active again maybe you can try this, it should disable your connection until you see fit.

Great little utility , thanks very much for pointing that out - it at least allows me to do what I want manually - i.e. use my wifi without having to turn the phone off.
Although I know you can disconnect GPRS from the Comm manager, it also doesn't seem to have an idle time out so once an application (like Emoze) has started it up it keeps running in the background. Also, as soon as you turn it off, inevitably Emoze turns it straight back on! The NoData application gives much more control so thanks for that.
I do go abroad reasonably often so also happy to be able to use it for its primary purpose of disabling GPRS whilst roaming to avoid silly charges
It would be great if HTC could build a bit more intelligence and control into the network side of these things though.

You may want to look into Schaps Advanced Config or KaiserTweak for wifi/gprs settings.
You can set timers and disconnects, etc, with those applications.

The Good News: I fixed this behavior on the phone w/o any 3rd-party utilities, etc.
The Bad News: I'm not 100% sure how. :-/ My apologies. Here is what I think did it:
Make sure your browser is closed and you have no open data connections.
1- Open the Wireless Manager and make sure "WLAN" is on and "Data Connection" is off.
2- Go to Start>Settings and choose the "Connections" tab along the bottom.
3- Open "Wireless LAN," choose your home wireless network, and make sure you're actively connected to it (should see a signal quality meter, device network settings, etc).
4- Close "Wireless LAN" and while "Settings" is still open and on the "Connections" tab, open "Wi-Fi." Your list of known Wi-Fi networks should be showing: make sure your home network says "connected."
5- Close everything back out to your "Today" screen.
When my Tilt is set this way -- and actively connected to my WLAN -- the Wireless Manager grays out "Data Connections" and doesn't even respond if I tap the icon. IE automatically uses my WLAN, although it won't connect to some of its pre-loaded favs b/c, I think, they're on WAP servers and the Wi-Fi/NAT router assigns/negotiates TCP/IP protocols for your phone.
I think now I accomplish all the above by simply opening the keyboard and pressing the FN/Wi-Fi key.
FYI -- In truth, I solved this problem by installing Opera Mobile and setting it as my default browser. Opera Mobile is a full browser, i.e. doesn't use WAP.

I was playing around with my friends Nokia E71 and was amased by how easily it handeld connections, with WIFI off i choose to reciever new e-mails, in a flash the phone started the WIFI and let me choose between available WIFI networks or if i wanted to use the 3G. After i downloaded the new e-mails the phone automatically turned of the WIFI...
On my X1 on the other hand i have to go to the comm manager turn on wifi press another button to choose between different routers, go to the e-mail press update, and when it's done i have to turn the wifi off again.
Is there any solution for getting my phone more like a nokia
I would like to choose connection before the phone automatically connects to 3G, and also that it automatically starts wifi scan and turns it of when I'm done.
If not is there anyway I can adjust which connections are allowed? Because right now I'm traveling in USA and I have a prepaid card, so i don't want to use 3G for getting my e-mails or go surfing, I know that if i'm connected to WIFI it doesn't connect to 3G but in the crappy hotels I'm living in the WIFI comes and goes and sometimes my phones jump over to 3G...

As for your second question regarding adjusting which connections are allowed, I use an application called NoData. It allows you to toggle the connections. It's a good way to save yourself from going over your telecom-plan.
Hi. Have a recent problem that developed on my HD2. It happened after installing the mod that activates a task switcher when holding the send button. Could have happened sooner but I think I would've noticed...
Problem is: I have my HD2 connected to WiFi at home and it works perfect for web browsing and all, but, the moment I use other apps such as updating weather or browsing google maps or the Windows marketplace they use the 3G regardless of my WiFi being active and working.
I am on 1.48 stock ROM.
I have uninstalled the mod BTW and I use duttys task manager.

doubt it has anything to do with that mod... i dont have any mods on and 50% of the time even tho i am in WiFi covered area with WiFi on it will start using 3G instead of checking for WiFi. Its extremely annoying and i cant understand that HTC didnt atleast give you a small manager wich would give you different options how to connect to internet once you are trying to connect...
Its not that I am in a WiFi zone. my WiFi is connected and I am browsing the web. It's.not that it is just choosing a connection, it completely ignores my WiFi on everything but the browser. And it only started happening today. Marketplace worked on WiFi yesterday.
Nevermind. I found the problem. Earlier today I set no WiFi network to be treated as a work network instead of a internet network. this lead to most apps thinking I am not connected to the internet.

Hi. My problem is more or less as described by NESO1234 above. WiFi at home is is connected, but browsing Internet is done through 3G (I guess - loading a page takes loong and the arrows indicating WiFi connection are not moving).
You mention network not set correct. Could you or someone give me a more spesific hunch (path...) on how to make WiFi beeing used?

Go to the WiFi connection place (where the Wifi switch is and it shows ur acess point underneath) go to Advanced > Change Network then select ur AP and make sure 'Connects to:' is set to 'The Internet'.

i'd like to save some battery on my desire and i think WiFi is draining the battery a lot.
Like many people i use wifi only at home but i forget to turn off wifi often and then the phone is searching for new wifi networks all the time.
Is there an app out there which turns off wifi automatically when a certain wifi network is out of range? Switching on manually is no problem, cause when i use internet at home i realize quick that i am on 3G and not Wifi. I think there is no way for an auto-on/auto-off.
Any ideas?

There's an app called Sweet Dreams that turn Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Ringer/ on or off based on some things like current day, hour of the day, location, sound in the room, movement of the handset.
It's more focused on saving battery and turning sound down when you sleep but works perfectly for what you need.
There's also something like Locale

If wifi XXX is out of range for more than 5 minutes -> turn off wifi
Or you can use "Setting Profiles" which I use and prefer much more over "Locale"
With Setting Profiles you have the option to save a location based on either
Lat/lon or Cells ids or WIFI location.

Well both have the option of using GPS but it can work just fine with cell triangulation. If your GPS is off it can work just fine based only on approximation from GSM towers, similar to what Google Maps does for the "My Location" feature.

Well if you want it to turn off WIFI when your leaving home and get out of reach of your WIFI you do the following:
1. Press "locations" and press the menu button and press "New location". Choose "Wi-Fi AP Identified" and put a mark where it says the name of you WiFI at home. and name it like "Home"
2. Now press the profiles button and create 2 profiles. First one you can call "At Home" and set it up like you want you telefon with WiFi enabled and so on when your at home.
Next create another profile and call it something like " Away from Home" and set it up with WiFi disabled and so on like you want it.
3. Now press the "Rules" button and press menu again and create a new rule.
Again press "Menu" and then "Add condition" and choose location you just created before.
Now press Menu and choose "add action" and choose "Activate profile" and choose the profile "At Home" that you created before.
4. Now press the "Rules" button and press menu again and create a new rule.
Again press "Menu" and then "Add condition" and choose location you just created before. But this time put a mark in "Inverse condition logic"
Now press Menu and choose "add action" and choose "Activate profile" and choose the profile "Away from Home" that you created before.
Now your telefon is set to turn off Wifi and what else you want off when you leave reach of your network at home and also it is set to turn back WiFi on when you get back home in reach of your network.
Simple once you learn the logic of setting up profiles and so on. And extremely powerfull as you can basicly set and rule and action for anything you want and get it to do anything you want.

That isn't going to work, when coming back from 'Away from Home' the wifi is in an off state therefore it won't detect that it is back in the home wifi range.
You need to set-up lon/lat for the wifi to turn back on again.
Ive set it up with location.. surely tht needs gps on tho?

No, I think it works out your location using the mobile network masts
I thought the HTC desire switched over to the 3G network when out of range of the wifi anyway.
How do you know for sure that it continues scanning for a wireless network?
And if this is certain, does it do this only when the phone is on and not in stand-by?
I think the best way to approach this is something like Nokia have.
Get the networks (wifi or 3g) in order of preference to connect. Then when sync is need if you have wifi network in a major priority of an 3g, the phone try to connect first to the wifi, if not in range go to 3g.
i downloaded the y5 app form the market and used it for a full day, i say it works amazing like how you want it...
at first i thought it was not working because when i was out of range, the wifi didnt turn off...but i found out why
when you first got your y5 app, open it and it will auto remember your wifi AP(if you are connected to the wifi AP when opening the app)
ok now the tricky part is setting it to turn off, you have to go out of range from the wifi(just go out the house until there is clearly no signal), then manually turn off the wireless.....
ok now go back into the wifi range, voila it will turn itself back on! and go away from it, will turn wifi off!
=D tried and tested....
ps: if you dont manually turn it off when you go out of range for the first time, it somehow wont auto turn wifi off after that......for me at least...
Does it have to be automatic? ToggleWifi shows a not connected icon in the topbar when you have wifi on and not connected. And it is not a widget, so you can customize the icon for wifi (which acts as a wifi toggle)

- cause i get a notification when an open wifi is awailable, and in addition, how should the phone know that i am at home without scanning (and do an auto connect)?

So I'm having trouble with getting wifi how I want it on my phone. At work we have a unsecured WAP with a web based authentication page. Trouble if you ever use it, it remembers the WAP and wants to login, but unless you you goto the web page, you have no internet. This is particularly a problem when wifi sleeps and looses connection.
The big issue with this is that my phone assumes it has internet when it doesn't. It doesn't fall back to 3g on failure to connect. That means I will not get texts for hours, facebook won't update, etc, etc.
Is there a way to force the phone to fall back to 3g when it fails to connect via wifi? Alternately is there an app that will parse a wifi login page and auto login for me? I'm running clean GB right now.

That's not the big problem though. If I lose connection (easy enough with out concrete walls and walking around) or simply don't login in first thing in the morning I still have the issue.
I either need a fallback to 3g or a way to auto login.

well i can tell you what i use Juice Defender and When WiFi is once it goes off my data kicks in so yeah that's my fallback to 3G so you could give that ago if you want.
IMO
Juice Defender= Battery Drainer and waste of money when i can do what it does manually.
To the OP:
the phone should automatically go back to 3g when wifi disconnects i just tested this with my router i had it connected then pull the plug and it went to 3g.

ive done some tests without JD also helps in other areas BTW, and to let you know i put JD on Extreme and let no apps get data unless i manually toggle data and i can tell that my battery lasts much longer by at least by a few hours but still helps rather than my data always being funny randomly connecting and disconnecting to 3G or even if it was off JD does help.

It does when it disconnects, however since the wifi point is open it auto connects every time it picks it up again. Aside from manually forgetting the wifi point all the time, there doesn't appear to be a way to stop this. Connecting remembers it. Its not that I can't get around this manually, but its really annoying.
You could probably do something with a tasker profile. I don't know how to do it but they have a bunch of examples on their site that may help.

I see your problem. You may be able to do this using scripting. The closest thing I have ever done like this is write a script that logged into my cable modem admin page automatically and grabbed the signal strength to log it. I used PHP (command line interpreter) but I would think any language should be capable of submitting data via a post request. Mine was triggered by cron. You would need to trigger on a successful wifi connection, check the ssid, and go from there. I dont know enough details about how that part is done to be helpful, but I know there are some apps that do detect active wifi connections (samba comes to mind) so it must be possible.

Good suggestions so far, u could also try spare parts wifi sleep policy settings..
It might also be something where the connection on the wifi network's (not your phone's) end times out, in which case I'm not sure what to tell u.
