<HOW TO> Easy Guide to Using Odin/Unbricking Your Phone - Captivate Android Development

I have noticed that while there are many guides to do this, people still ask the question in threads, so I'll simplify it here. It is meant as an Odin helper.
Make sure you have downloaded the files you need (firmware and odin) from the bottom of this post. I have only included Odin v3.1 and the needed file for UCJF6 restore, cause the jh3 and other stuff is too big to upload directly. This Odin works with all firmwares. Just d/l the desired firmware and use this odin to flash. Just unzip both my files and there you go.
1 - PHONE MUST BE POWERED OFF (not plugged in and pull the battery for 5 seconds if you have to).
2 - Open Odin and choose the files you need. Do everything EXCEPT press start.
3 - HOLD BOTH volume buttons and, while holding them, count to 2 then plug in usb and wait 2-4 more seconds. Phone will enter download mode and Odin will recognize it on a COM.
4 - Press start in Odin. When it completes and your phone reboots, close Odin.
5 - BE PATIENT!!! Your phone may now appear to stick on one of the boot screens or a blackscreen, but it is really doing stuff. Wait 5-10 minutes before you impatient people decide it didnt work.
I can only say this: THIS METHOD HAS NEVER FAILED FOR ME
I hope this helps someone, as someone was kind enough to do for me.....
Enjoy, and happy modding! =)

I have read almost every sticky here, and I swear of the 15-20 threads I am subscribed to I see AT LEAST 3 a day saying ".... I think my phone is bricked.....", so I figured I'd just put it right there on the 1st easy post in kind of a monkeys-could-do-it-like-this mode. I'm just trying to help those that DON'T read the really long threads. We know they should, but they don't.

It seems like most people are messing up AFTER they have the necessary firmware files, which is why I didn't add any links. At least that's what I'm getting from the posts they make.
Honestly, and really I mean no offense here because I love your work AND advice, I see 1 flaw in your post, at least on my captivate which is all i can practice on. Copied from your post:
1. Download and install the correct drivers below (mac and linux don't need drivers)
2. Plug in your usb cable to your phone and computer
3. Open Odin
4. Enter Download Mode (see below)
5. Click Start
If I plug in BEFORE opening Odin, Odin does not pick up my phone. Doing it my way, holding both volume and then inserting usb while holding them with the phone powered off, has NEVER not worked for me. That's all I was trying to clarify for people. Sorry if I stepped on your toes.

Uploaded Odin and stock jf6 to the OP

Then what you can do is ask DG to include this as a method. There is no reason for you posting the same info which is already a sticky thread. This will eventually get lost while the sticky will stay at the top.

Alright i just wanted to say thank you to everyone. With your help i was finally able recover my phone using odin 1click. I have to say thay i was convinced that it was an unrecoverable brick and i had that sick feeling in my stomach but i read, read again, and re read the entrire odin 1click thread, and i discovered that i was booting into stock recov and not download. I think out of the 10 plus times i tried it i actually got it to go into download, by luck im afraid. Anyway the point of my long post is to thank you guys for being so smart lol u saved my phone. And me from getting an ulcer. Note Do Not download circle batt mod with black evo notification bar with the vibrant hybrid rom. from eugene. It Will brick your phone. At least it did mine. Now to figure out if i want to root again after dodging that bullet lol

Also i dont care where it gets posted to be honest. I am one of those monkies that probably should not root, but cant help myself trying ti learn all i can from you all lol

I didn't even think of that. You are right. Although I personally prefer my 3.1 odin to the 1 click, it should've been added to his, since my main point was/is the ease of getting into d/l mode if needed. I'll think before I start a new thread next time =)

An alternative to three button combo recovery

I don't know where I found these files, probably in a thread hidden away on XDA but looked again and had no luck!
Basically, the attached zip file, unzip the files. Plug in SGS with USB debugging on and open the recovery batch file.
The phone automatically goes into recovery.
Useful if anyone is struggling with the three button combo!
This has been posted in the rooting guide.
ADB reboot method does not help the phone when it fails to start properly.

I couldn't find the rooting guide! If you do, please credit that thread and poster with this but this is useful for people in a separate thread. I've used it numerous times!
It's certainly no good for a crashed/bricked phone but is useful for just testing new firmwares, rooting, lagfixing, etc.

That's not entirely helpful, the reason why the 3 button modes are needed is if your phone cannot be reached by the SDK.

I've used it several times just to reboot into recovery to flash a firmware rather than the hassle of taking battery out because three button combo didn't work.
You don't have to like it or use it but if it was useful to me then even if there's ONE other person who this is useful to, then great.
Considering a guy takes his time to make a post to try and help, maybe it'd be better if you didn't just slate it because it wasn't useful to you?
Just downloaded the file, all it does is use adb.exe from a batch file. It's not something new and I'm pretty sure it's been posted before. This is only useful if your phone is booting into a functioning OS state.
You are right that for phones without working 3 button modes, it's how you would get into recovery.

Sorry man, but the guys are right. It is against XDA rules to repost threads. As well, this should be in the General Section to begin with as it isn't directly related to Rom-Development.
Please see the new sticky about forum structure...
Thread moved to general section, and closed as it is redundant.

I just got my Fascinate today. 9/29/10

I want to root it and deodex it.
What is the easiest way to go about it.
I read his thread but it says you have to be rooted for it to work.
But i dunno what my OTA or what ever is im just being apprehensive cause i don't wanna go in gung ho and **** it all up!
Thanks guys
First start with the thread Root, Recovery, and Update. Follow the first section called "Note 1" to root and flash clockwork recovery. Then you can follow the steps to flash the Deodexed system. Make sure you make a backup of your system before you try to load the deodex just in case.
Yeah... definitely do your reading before you start cluttering the forums with these silly posts. If you read the Sticky Thread at the top you would not be having these questions. Call me an ass, call me whatever... but if people would just read everything would be so much better.
I did read that thread. it hasnt been updated in like 3 weeks so i didnt want to do something out dated, As i said i didnt know what OTA that would be great if there was a sticky for lingo too. But Im sorry im cluttering your precious little forums bro. Hope you can sleep at night knowing that will be not packed with posts about people looking for advice without people being condescending assholes.
The thread hasn't been updated because Theirs no updates simply everything in the root thread is confirmed and working just follow instructions very carefully and you shouldn't run into problems. But as you know it if "You" screw up then you might can get bricked.
I just followed the One click root method like 5 mins very easy then Clockwork recovery was easy trust me not hard.
Seriously.
I feel that if the first five posts on the forum were just stickied copies of the LOOK HERE FIRST thread, people would still be making these waste-of-space posts.
Human nature, I guess.
I'm happy you got your phone and I share your excitement over it, but I don't really care that you have it, and I don't need to know that, either.
After you're all Deodex'ed, Rooted, and Backed-up, just wait around and lurk like the rest of us until somebody makes something for us.
and btw i learned all of the lingo by typing things i didn't understand into google.
Very well put... lmfao at people getting all butt hurt. Come on mods, delete the thread.
When i run the root with the 1 click method after it says exploiting my phone its going to force the files on it says error: phone not phone. it retries about 5 more times and then it just ends.
Any help?
When you ran the Odin did you click Phone or PDA your suppose to click pda and select the files.. you shouldnt mess up anything if you just read carefully so simple.
I havent got to odin yet. After It restarts my phone and tells me to unlock it it says it should take 3 minutes to finish. It says it error: cannot find phone. this happens when it is trying to put thr.files on the phone.
^^ The same thing happened to me until I downloaded different drivers than what was posted in the one click thread. Google "Samsung Fascinate drivers" and click on the link through Verizon.
I couldn't tell you why the ones in the thread didn't work, but I guess sometimes that's the way it is... Also, the less you have running on your PC the better. I made a different login just for hacking/cell phone stuff that doesn't have much of anything running on startup.

need serious help ASAP! Please!

Tonight I decided to mess with my phone. I flashed eugene's new r13 rom, got it working fantastic. Then. I decided to try a lagfix. I heard of one in the market so i searched and found an "unofficial" app that applied the voodoo lagfix. needless to say it messed up my phone big time. At first, it restarted and some voice said "converting partition........not enough space on partition." So reboot into recovery mode and to my surprise its a diff, voodoo, version of clockwork recovery. I look at the voodoo options, cant find anything. found the area to partition the sd card. I partition 512mb i believe with no sway (i think). phone restarts. freezes on galaxy S screen. try booting into recovery. will not work. tried 10 times. tried to reboot into recovery via adb, phone is recognized and reboots but doesnt get to recovery mode, just galaxy S screen then freezes. I have NO idea what to do! Please help!!! if i left out any info, please ask!!!
first restore back to stock via Odin.
second, root and install roms again.
third, use your newly working device to read the post about non-development stuff going in the Q&A section.
adb reboot download and use odin to flash back to stock (froyo or eclair) there are plenty of threads on how to do this method. Best of luck
Use ODIN to go back to stock. no?
Umm, calm down, i think you will be fine.
Although some people are going to scream at you for putting this in the developers section.
Can you get to download mode? Turn phone off, hold down volume up and volume down at the same time, but don't touch the power button. Then, with your usb cable connected to your computer, plug the usb into your phone, while still holding down the volume buttons.
If you can get to download, then can't you just put your phone back to stock using ODIN?
I'm not an expert, but I'm assuming that should work for you.
edit:
I just uploaded odin, and the tar and pit files you need to get back to stock JFD.
I found all these files in xda originally, but didn't feel like finding each thread individually, so uploaded them on sendspace for you, much faster than searching the forum for each of these.
ODIN latest version:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/o0ivp2
Pit file:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/j9ytb3
JFD tar file:
still uploading...will post soon. ...nevermind upload taking too long, found the download link providing by justanotherdev
http://www.justanotherdev.slackdev.com/T959UVJFD.tar
I'm not an expert, but maybe you should ask everyone else if it is safe to ODIN to stock once you have messed with a lagfix and partitions.
good luck
Sounds like a trip down the "odin" lane to JFD is in order for ya. Go to the vibrant bible sticky, grab odin 1.70 and the JFD stock ".tar" file. Follow the tutorial posted, should get you back up and running.
p.s. wrong section...
EDIT: This should help you out

Correct. I'm not going to scream, but it's generally bad for to post "help me help me" threads in the development section. Either post them in the appropriate ROM thread (in your case, the thread for R13) OR in the Q&A section. Otherwise, you'll get posts just like mine that probably wont be as nice.
As for your issue, you have a soft-brick. Download ODIN, download the correct PIT and TAR files, follow the instructions in the ODIN thread to flash to stock and start over. Thats the only way you're going to fix your phone at this point.
im sorry if i placed this thread in the wrong place, im kind of new here. Guys, i really appreciate the help! can someone point in the direction of how to use odin? I have literally no idea what it even looks like or how to install it.
Also check the bible
the Vibrant and gallagherm1993 guys are right, but when you have flashed 2.2 it is safer to use the disable voodoo lag first (may not work cause you are saying it some hack version) but I d go that way first then flash the eugenes froyo that does not brick.... no repartition (do not check that box) reboot back to recovery then flash back to stock when going back to stock, you do check the repartition...from there, you can do anything you want
There is in the 1st page a thread that has a complete zip but not the froyo that does not brick you will need to get that from the bible sticky
good luck

hey wolf...look up a couple posts, i'm putting all the files you need there.
The only way to fix this is to use odin. Are you familiar with odin? You better be! Since you played with VooDoo without really knowing what you got yourself into, you need to do this.
You will lose all of your data!
First ODIN Eugenes froyo that doesnt brick. Search for it here on xda. Get used to using the search feature. Then after that you can odin back to jfd and work from there. If you read enough, there are ways to work through this. Good luck and if you still dont get it, PM me.

Why does he need "eugenes froyo that doesn't brick" ???
I was Running Axura 2.0.5, and used ODIN today to go straight to stock JFD.
Then I flashed the leaked JK6 froyo.
what is the point of "eugenes froyo that doesn't brick" ?
if you flash a rom without disabling voodoo, the partition stays as ext4 eugene's froyo that does not brick reformats that partition. JFD doesnt work the same way.
Follow this guide, if it doesnt work look at the other tutorials in the BIBLE section in Development.
Follow exactly no skipping steps.

Ohhh I get it. So people who f*cked up their partition or messed around with a lagfix, should use eugenes froyo that doesn't brick first. BTW eugene seems to have pulled everything off xda, I can't find that in the search.
Your phone is totally dead... give you $20 for it.
I'm all for lending a helping hand, and it's clear that all the relevant information has already been posted, but it still amazes me how often people will attempt to modify their device without doing their homework first and then freak out when things go awry.
I know I've f-ed up my phones plenty of times either by bad builds or not paying attention to details, but I've never thought the best fix would be to start a new thread on a forum under the assumption that I'm the first to have this problem or to avoid having to search for a resolution.
We all start somewhere and are always learning as we experiment with new tricks, but jeebus cripes people, why would you install something risky without having a backup plan in case something goes wrong?
Ah well, whatever. Sorry for a useless response.

Froyo Update Won't Install

I have the Samsung Fascinate and I recently rooted it to get all the wonderful benefits that come with rooting.
I downloaded the leaked Froyo update, renamed it "update.zip" and put it in my sd card folder in order to update.
I then turned off my phone and pushed the power button plus the volume up and down until I got to the boot screen. I kept getting an error saying it couldn't verify the package (or something along those lines) and then it sent me to a screen with the triangle, exclamation point and the little droid guy.
I also tried using Rom Manager but the same thing happened.
I hear you are supposed to use Odin, but I am running on a mac and Odin is a windows application.
Please help me, I'm desperate to get the Froyo update on my device.
Thanks in advance.
Yikes u didn't do any research at all did you?? U can't use Odin on Mac....and u need it. Do u even have cwm? Probably not since u didn't Odin. U need to Odin cwm...Make a backup...Odin eb01 modem...flash rom. Update.zip is not correct...u don't rename .zip roms...you flash them via cwm. Not trying to bash u....but you are way off...and getting help via forums will b tough.
You need to go to irc and be polite and find some help there. Someone should hopefully be able to help you...I will b on eventually.

I did my research but if I'm not literate with how or what a CWM is or how to use it, that doesn't mean I didn't do my research.
But are you telling me I can't install the update without a windows computer?
I have access to one where I am but I would rather know all the steps before I get on someone else's computer and start trying to figure it out there.
I looked through all 50 or so pages of the Froyo leaked thread and I saw a few people who understood all these things, but if I don't understand and there isn't a tutorial it makes it harder for me to accomplish my goal.
Can your phone boot up?
Someone varify my directions.
This might work if u can get into download mode. U need to find all the links urself since I'm on tapatalk.
First off...find a pc. Without one you can't do anything. Put ur eb01 rom on sdcard for later. Instal the 32 bit or 64 bit Samsung drivers depending on ur pc. For many..its the 32 bit. Then get Odin. U will need to find a link to cwm...if I'm not mistaking there is one on like the 2nd or 3rd page in android development section...will say updated cwmq for dj05 or dl09 or something like that. Find directions of how to use Odin...but simply place the cwm.tar file in the pda section on Odin...then click start. When that's done...u should make a backup...however...u may not b able to boot up because of what u have already done. U may try odining the eb01 modem. Once u have that done...hold up down and power to get I to your new updated cwm. From there click instal zip from sdcard...and flash ur eb01 rom of choice....wipe wipe wipe...reboot system.
Again...this may not work since I'm not possitive what u already did to ur phone by not doing your research. Like I already said...be polite and head over to irc. .someone will have more time than I do to fix ur phone.

No, but I also don't see the need for the disrespectful way you are treating someone looking for help.
Not everyone out there is as "smart" as you may be with modding but that's what this forum is for. Questions and answers, not smartass replies that don't help at all.
I appreciate the other posters response because at least he gave me information with no attitude. If you want to help someone, help them, don't demean them and offer a little advice.

Honestly, you haven't done anything to your phone yet, so it shouldn't be running any differently than it was before.
There is a way to push CWM using ADB and Terminal on a Mac, but you would still need Odin to flash the modem, so might as well do everything that way. Download this Odin package from Android Central, and flash that using the PDA box in Odin. After that, you can flash a different 2.2 ROM or theme if you like
The only thing I am having trouble with is how to "flash" something.

Go to the Eb01 modem thread and read it. They will tell you how to "flash". You download the modem, plug in your phone, select PDA in ODIN and hit write or whatever...
It's as easy as reading and searching,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948679
Not searching for things will get you flamed, ignored and banned (If not reading the rules). The reason I suggested you flash back to complete stock is because until you know what flashing is, difference between a ROM and a Radio...you are in dangerous territory of bricking your phone.
Guys, I'm also new to this flashing thing, but I've used Odin before and have read all the steps in the EB01 thread. My question is: can I install EB01 on top of stock, unmodded EA28 (which is the latest Eclair from Verizon) without wiping my data? All sets of instructions I've read include wiping, wiping, wiping... But since the new ROM is supposedly signed with the same Samsung/Verizon key as my current ROM, why shouldn't I be able to just install it on top, without wiping my data?
Or is it that because the guy who posted the ROM actually modified it, it's no longer signed with the Samsung or Verizon key?
I searched, but didn't find. I think the answer to this may be relevant to the original poster of this thread too, that's why I'm posting here.

It's always recommended to wipe. Those that don't are typically those who end up complaining about bad battery life, force close loops and utter suckageness...now flashing let's say super clean 2.0 to 2.2...that's fine bypassing the wipe, but imho that's the only exception.

You can install without wiping (saying from experience) as long as you dont mind problems later. I had plenty of force close problems and widget problems when I didnt wipe data.
Most ROM here are modified, to help protect the person who leaked it.
Interesting. Do we know the cause of those problems? How come no such problems exist when you update OTA with a similar official build?
I'm a developer and it seems weird to me that if you're starting with a stock ROM and upgrading to another stock ROM, apps will have issues. Or are the issues due to the fact that the newer ROM is still buggy (and that's probably why they haven't officially released it yet)?
Also, it doesn't hurt to try, right? And if I do get problems, THEN I can just do a simple wipe and start off clean. But if I don't have huge problems, I don't have to go through the trouble of restoring all my apps and settings, logging into everything again, etc.
it's not hard to restore apps/data, use titanium backup.
go ahead and try it without wiping, just do a full nandroid backup first. then if it sucks or you get funny errors you can revert really easily. I'd wipe with a major change like this, but if you're determined to try it there's really no big downside. just back up!
I ran EB01 over the weekend, didn't like a couple of things and was back up and running on DL09 in no time when I decided to switch back.
Its recommended to wipe but I've seen it a lot where u OK not wiping... u can try without and it u get bootloop just do a wipe. Like posted...titanium backup is ur bff when I mod.
Also about the post about me being rude.. I gave u the info u need...just telling you to research. U said u did, and I pointed out u didn't. If your not going to take the time to learn what ur doing...then expect help ASAP...expect ppl to b a bit rude. Ppl are welcome to help...but if u do something dumb without research...expect people to tell you.
Glad u got it working ok

Just FYI everyone, I was able to to install Froyo without wiping and everything works fine. (except that my home screen shortcuts and maybe even some of my settings got reset... which was one of the things I was trying to avoid... but whatever.). The only issue I've run into so far is that Google Maps hangs for many seconds every once in a while. But I reset its internal cache and it's better now. All other apps are working fine.
umm "TheFake" is obviously a troll
nobody is that stupid, and his screen name gives it away

I think I bricked my Epic...

I was on AA ROM V5 and wanted to switch back to ACS frozen. So I was following the instructions and flashing. I successfully flashed EC05 stock, and I was flashing the CWM 3.1.0.1 tar here. After it said it had finished flashing, it had the symbol which was a phone with an arrow pointing to a computer. I tried to flash EC05, but it kept failing immediately. I tried one last time, and then it got stuck. I waited twentyish minutes then pulled the battery to try again. Now the phone won't respond to anything.
Keep battery out, then plug in usb. see if that gets you into download mode.
You shouldnt check repartition!!! Try the 'button' and uf ut doesnt work, unplug everything from your phone, pull the battery.and leave it like.that obernight. Then try odin
I'm assuming my method worked since u thanked me?

Thank you!!!
And yeah, Marc that was bad idea but I was following this guide. I'd read it the past you shouldn't but I wanted to make sure I didn't screw it up when I flashed the rom so I did it anyways. How ironic.
