This tutorial will show you how to convert your videos to h264 which is natively supported by the evo. Original sample files are .mkv, final converted video is .m4v.
Perfect sweet spot for -best- quality vs storage capacity
Step 1). Grab Handbrake. handbrake[dot]fr/downloads[dot]php
Step 2). Install Handbrake.
Step 3). Launch Handbrake.
Step 4). Top left, select "Source->Video File"

Step 5). Select the "Apple Universal preset"
Step 6). Output Settings, Container "MP4 File" should be selected. Destination, find a spot to drop the converted file, use "Browse" button.
We use the universal preset as a template to build a custom one. Simple steps, infact only two areas will be addressed on this tricks post. The "Video" and "Picture" tabs.
Our source sample reveals these details: --- .720p.BluRay.DTS.x264 --- : out in the wild.
--Length is approximately 1min 10secs, use your imagination.

Step 8). Video Codec: H.264(x264) :: Constant Quality: Set at 70.1% RF:15.25
Step 9). Either "Add to Queue" and/or "Start" your encoding...
Settings above resulted with a video that was 1.8GB in size, a running time of 1hr 42mins, encoding ran for about 44mins. Original source file was 4.7GB
Original sample filesize: 53.5MB, calculate the ratios accordingly.

Thanks for the tips. I will try it out.
Excellent! Will give this a try.
Another one:

I would recommend dropping the quality a little below 70% because the files will GET BIG and FAT! Unless you have like multiple 32GBs laying around... otherwise save some space by going with slightly less quality.
Has anyone tried this on a regular TV? I am kicking myself....I got ONE perfect conversion. Looks amazing on the EVO and on my 42 inch (via win7 MCE). I can't remember what I did other than setting the target file size to 1.5 gig. I like the idea of not needing two copies of everything I make.
That'll teach me for screwing around at work and not making notes.

Only thing what it doesnt have is 2pass option, but thats not a big problem.

Looks like enoght. I only need .avi I tried .mkv but it has problems with sound. Dont know if it is problem of program or of my computer.
- You can set a lot of containers and codecs
-you can set your bitrate and other things, resolution, pad etc.
-you can burn in subtitles, it supports many formats like .srt and .sub and few more like .ass lol

about 3rd picture : dont press activate high quality settings. If I did, my encoding crashed when started.
about 4th picture : I put 800*440 because of aspect ratio and I want to play it in Album. If you want to play in WMP, you got 2 ways :
1.) stretch it to 800x480
2.) set 800x480 but also set pad 20 bottom and 20 top, so your aspect ratio will be same as input.
I prefer this program because of .srt subtitles support. If you dont need subtitles, then you can choose from many converters. I would suggest handbrake which is free and also has 2pass option.
I get superior results to MP4, if I:
Select Pocket Player -> iPhone -> iPhone AVC H264
Select "iPhone H264 high quality" from the drop-down menu
Push "Settings" link and set:
Audio to double channel 128 kbits/secVideo to 1024 kbits/sec
And happy converting
Very smooth playback (in WMP), virtually no compression artifacting (blocky ****, which is what you get going through just MP4, apperantly MP4 is not the same as iPhone MP4). Currently trying to find the limit of kbits/sec on the video, 1500 is just a little too much, get choppy playback, 1024 is just too little, get very minor blockiness.
Hope this helps and love to have some feedback.
nice
Thank you
Nice tool !!
I really got to say million thanks to you!!!!!! And I finally found a perfect video converter for everything!!!! It is truly H264 converter, and the quality is absolutely good!!
Software: Super
Apps in Background: Gyrator, Total Commander, CorePlayer, S2U2(well cant be seen in task list),ActiveSync(not running but in icon, you know what I mean)

Process: All are done using 1 video
Top 3 underlined are what I used for all videos
1 (Half or Full)
Half = 400x240
Full = 800x480
2 No Aspect ratio as you customized your size, if there is, just restart SUPER
3 I used original video framerate
4 (528 or 1008) "written in file name"
5 Uncheck them all
Did you notice that checking top quality made the video actually worse? I think it goes same with High Quality, I've tested it, but not posting it
6 Well whats a good video without at least 128 audio
NQ means all unchecked or I made it a term for No Quality (but is highquality actually depending on your bitrate ) See 5 above
not tested = no point in testing, there is a better one

( 16.8 MB )Keep Your Mind Wide Open FULL 528 NQ.MP4

( 16.7 MB )Keep Your Mind Wide Open HALF 528 HQ.MP4 (not tested)
Core Player Settings
Just ask me which you need, i think mines in default except for orientation
Best fit since its 400x240
Core v1.3.0 build 6213
If someone can make a rapidshare, megaupload link besides this one, it would help me alot. I have limited bandwidth.
Hope this helps
i tried this one, when i set up bitrate to 1000kb/s or more, the video will be much laaaaagger.. lol useless of this software. i'd like to stick to projection's Encoder for HD .
Super works not very well under Vista.
I'm using FormatFactory now, very easy to use and it is FREE.
yeah it started laggy to me too when i was converting some vids, mustve been the original source video. I'm not sure super converts them perfectly, the encoder for hd for me lags lol, well not in all videos, so most likely we all still have to wait. Will try again with that bad video source
Just pointing out that setting it to 400x240 might be better just increase the zoom or fit best when playing rather than auto set to 800x480. Going a couple of full movies, too bad i cant batch with different settings
Hello all,
I found this great free program for ripping DVDs and Blu-rays. It is called DVDFab HD Decrypter. By following the steps below you can have distortion free movies on your Archos.
First download and install DVDFab HD Decrypter:
http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm
Next run the program.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Select HD Decrypter - Free Edition
Select "Do not show again"
Click the "Start DVDFab" button
Click the "OK" button
Select your region code
Select "Do not show again"
Click the "OK" button
Select DVD Ripper | More... | to MP4
Insert the DVD that you want to rip in the drive
DVDFab will automatically highlight the movie track. Select it by clicking the checkbox.
Click the "Edit" button
I highlighted in red the fields to be edited
Clean up the file name and title
Change Fixed Bitrate to 1500
Change Channel to Stereo
Change Bitrate to 128kbps
Click the "Video Effect Settings" button
Under Customized Size enter the max 16:9 resolution and click the "Add" button
Archos 101 display is 1024x600
-- DVD max 16:9 resolution: 852x480
-- Blu-ray max 16:9 resolution: 1024x576
Archos 70 display is 800x480
-- DVD/Blu-ray max 16:9 resolution: 800x450
Next click on the Crop tab
You want the Cropped Aspect Ratio to be the same as your displays ratio.
1024/600=1.71 and 800/480=1.67
Top and Bottom = 0
Left and Right
-- Archos 101 DVD = 17
-- Archos 101 Blu-ray = 21
-- Archos 70 DVD/Blu-ray = 27
Click the "OK" button
Click the "OK" button
Click the "Start" button
Select "Do not show again"
Click the "OK" button
Now it will start ripping the video. It may take 1-2 hours.
When it is done it will bring up a File Transfer window. Just close it by clicking the close button in the upper right hand corner.
Copy your video.mp4 to the Video folder or SD card on your Archos via USB and then run the Video app to watch.
That's great. It is able to offer high output quality for playback on Archos

For things like this, it will probably trigger a false positive. If your worried about it in a vm ware or something.

Nice how-to-rip manual!
If you want to convert full hd videos or non supported audio/video files, I can recommend AVS Video Converter. It is very easy to use and the output (video) is great.
I use it to convert ripped (full hd) blu-rays, that usually have at least 5.1 audio, to a MP4 file with stereo sound.
I normally use CloneDVDmobile but now I will have to give this a shot. Thanks
I've tried this software - videos look awesome but I have a disconnect between the audio and video... audio kicks in a bit before the picture... really odd.
Any one out there have a solution?
Thank you Tesla74. This is one of the fastest ways to copy video's for the Archos 70 that I've found. One question? Have you or anyone on the forum found a way to save the settings to the selected or default profile? I have clicked on "Set as Default" but that appears to only save some of the conversion settings. I haven't figured out how to save the video effect settings. This would make converting a large library much easier. Thanks a bunch!
Hello all, I am new to this forum and am looking forward to learning from the best! Here is my issue: I recently purchased the Archos gen8 101. My goal is to rip DVD to the tablet to view when on a plane. I have followed Tesla74 instuctions which were perfect for this Novice!!! LOL. My problem is, it is taking forever to rip and hasn't completed...i eventually get an error. I am trying again with different DVD and currently its been ripping for 2 hours and only at 16%. I have a Toshiba laptop/vista. (3yrs old) Also, I am really a novice so I appologize for any "wrong" terminalolgy. Hopefully I can get some direction on what to do.
I am also using DVDFAB to rip the DVD. I hope I have given enough of info. Thank you for any help you can give me.
The conversion is a very resource consuming thread and needs alot of processor power.
If your Toshiba has a nvidia graphiccard http://www.mediacoderhq.com/ might help you, othervise you have to find the right parameters for the conversion.
And yes, it can take a long time.
There's also a free program called Handbrake that will do this. You can give that a try if dvdfab gives you trouble.
AR Resize
Download: http://www.sendspace.com/file/qt61s0
Description: Adjust video aspect to better fit widescreen videos onto mobile devices' screens. Very fast, no video recoding. Windows-based. MP4 only.
Use: Unzip to a folder. Drag-drop videos onto AR_RESIZE.CMD to change their aspects. To restore to original aspect, drag-drop on AR_RESTORE.CMD.
Notes:
. Degree of aspect change is adjustable. To change, edit AR_RESIZE.CMD and search for set "_fudge=7". Possible values are from 0 to 10, where 0 = no video aspect change, and 10 = change to fully fit device screen. Samples below.
. Since this changes a value in the MP4 container, not all players are compliant. Anamorphic videos may be less compatible. Feedback on Xoom player (and 3rd-party Droid players) are welcomed.
DVD Catalyst just added this functionality too for Xoom rip although I am no fan of stretching my videos around.
Cool editing the MP4 info though.
The above is non-permanent and reversible, which is vastly preferable to having to re-encoding the video. As of this point, it doesn't do side-cropping, since I know of no way to do soft-cropping via MP4 container specs.
I'll implement soft-crop once there is a decent media player for Android that can handle the MKV format. MKVMerge has a cropping function, but sadly, most players won't recognize it. Since the MKV container is sponsored by the Core peeps, I'll be certain to get them to implement it for CorePlayer (if it's not already), and I'll be on the VLC forums as well.
I've always hated watching TV's where people distort the sd to widescreen. if the ratio isn't set properly it drives me crazy.
I agree, distorting AR isn't a good option, but it's between the bad and the worse. There are a few gazillion tablets out there with 4:3 aspect.
Which of the below looks the worst to you?
I hadn't realized that Leonidas was made out of the same material that Gumby is...Thanks for this.
Better image resizing examples. First image is of 300 trailer (2.41 AR) on the iPad, second is of same on the Xoom.

ehm and what is right 240 x 400 or 400 x 240 i will watch it fullscreen(from phone)
This settings ^ no working why? divx is no divx? its not all the same? say me what option the best
I used badaboom (nvidia tool to convert files with gpu -> real fast ), just took the mp4 format.
Resolution fitting the phones one, rest like lowest settings. If I have my big pc back I can make a testfile for you.
Ehm i would have the exact resolution of the phone that its not use so much mb so i can make 700mb movie to 200mb with 240 x 400 and no qaulity lose
For the record, our phone is able to play videos that consist of 720x480 pixels. I personally used easy video converter (probably costs but if you know to avoid that shouldn't be a prob), it had loads of presets and options to choose from, such as "Samsung galaxy S" which would convert your video with the correct settings for SSG.
Also you could use the free converter from Samsungs own crapware collection, I found it pretty good also.
If I remember right (It's been a while I've watched a movie on my SG3) the best codec that had the smallest file size and best quality was h.264, so try using that. I did some experimenting too and found that no videos lag, no matter how high you push the bitrate of sound or video, it always worked flawlessly.

which is best video converter for galaxy 3?
