Droid 2 Verizon's first 4G phone? [update: verizon sales rep lies] - Droid 2 General

Just got off the phone with Verizon ordering a Droid 2. The rep told me the Droid 2 is Verizon's first 4G phone. She said they currently have 4G in 35 markets. I cant find anything about that anywhere online, so I called back and asked another rep and he again confirmed that the Droid 2 is their first 4G phone. Anyone heard about the Droid 2 supporting 4G?
edit: 2 out of 3 sales reps told me the Droid 2 was 4g. 3rd rep denied it, Customer service and Tech Support both denied it. Although the customer service rep did tell me she thought all of the phones would support 4g "Otherwise all of our customers would have to buy new phones when we roll out 4g". Uh, yeah, i think thats the point! I corrected her on the matter, and she then did some more reading and confirmed that 3G phones will not magically work on 4G. I hate it when you know more about a persons job then they do! If I sold phones I would know everything about the phones we sold.

Verizon does not have 4g available in 35 markets, and the Droid 2 is not 4g capable. According to DroidForums and BGR among other sources, Verizon will start rolling out true 4g around Black Friday with the first 4g phones to follow shortly after.

I am under that impression as well. But why are 2 different reps telling me this? Clearly either they are misinformed, or it's some super secret feature of the Droid 2. You would think if it was true they would be marketing the hell out of it. I'm going to call again when they open and see if I can talk to someone higher up. If its not true they absolutely should not be telling customers the phone supports it. She clear as day said "The Droid 2 is our first 4g phone".

As far as I know, Sprint is the only carrier with 4G at the moment. Verizon is currently testing their 4G, as is AT&T, while T-Mobile is touting its HSPA+ 3G network as having "4G Speeds". If Verizon launched the Droid 2 and it had 4G radios in it, I'm sure we'd know from them or the FCC. Those reps more than likely had no idea what they were talking about, it's just interesting you got the same answer from two different people. Out of curiosity, I think I'll call Verizon and ask them the same question.

Yes please do and let me know what they tell you. Next time I call I'm going to record the call and post it online
Im on the phone with them right now. Customer Service knows nothing about it apparently. It's the sales department that's telling people this. I'm being transferred to tech support now. Apparently this is absolutely not true (I assumed that). I'm going to call Sales again and see if I can get a 3rd rep to tell me the Droid 2 is the first 4g phone
edit: 3rd sales rep said the Droid 2 is not 4g. Interesting. Apparently they have different playbooks. I should call customer service and see if they can track down who took my order for the Droid 2 and give them a spanking. It was the first feature she mentioned! "The Droid 2 is our first 4g phone, we currently have 4G service in 35 markets". Naughty naughty verizon!

Yeah, whoever you talked to is either extremely misinformed, or just full of it. I called and talked to a rep today and said I was told that my Droid 2 I bought was a 4G phone and asked if my DInc that I'm currently on was too. He laughed and said Verizon doesn't have any 4G phones yet, because they don't even have 4G service so unfortunately I'm stuck on 3G for now. Silly telesales reps.

June 13th Release

Let the rumor train keepon a rollin'
Here's the link and another and one more.
Also, as some comments have said, I think they're mixing up 4G service for 4G hotspot. I don't believe (or cross my fingers/hope/pray/etc) that Sprint will charge extra for 4G, but will charge the $10-20 for the mobile hotspot.
That's over two months from now.... WTF lol.

Same here!!! I've been sitting on my upgrade since Nov. lol
Let me ask you Sprint customers about coverage.
I know they say Verizon has the most coverage blah blah and AT&T is next. I just think in sheer numbers these two get the most rezognition because of the 90Mil and 85Mil customer they have.
But I have been looking at the Spring Coverage and it seems they cover better of lots of areas that Verizon and AT&T are not that good at and equal to areas to areas they cover well.
Also any roaming charges? I ask this only because I am not familair with their data/phone plans anymore. The last time I had them was when roaming was a KILLER Charge!
So would you say their coverage is not given enough credit?
I don't like Verizon. I am inclined to pick up an HTC Telstra on April 27th for my AT&T network. I have no contract at the moment. I got the T-Mobile and returned it due to the bad coverage at some client locations and inside buildings the are horrid.
AT&T seems to cover almost every area that I need so far.
Sprint seems to cover them well but I like real life data not Sprint Data.
Thanks for your any input..
Sprint has fairly good coverage in my area. I live in a small town and have full bars inside my house. The only dropouts I have experienced in a 60 mile radius are in places where I doubt there is a tower for any cell provider and even then data just drops to 1x (I drive across an inlet bridge with land about a mile wide with the atlantic ocean to one side and the bay to the other side.)
I feel Sprint is getting back in the game full force. Time will tell when they roll out the EVO and 4G. Some potential problems could arise such as customers purchasing the EVO only to find out there is no 4G coverage in their area etc... But it's a risk Sprint will take and incentive to expand their network. You also have to remember not everyone is a smart phone junky or even cares about 4G. Most want a phone to talk on and text/picture message. I get asked by someone sitting on a laptop checking their email about why I play with my phone so much and I turn and smile and say I'm just doing the same thing you are and they still don't really get it. So it's an evolution although it will be marketed as a revolution.
I think Sprint's main problem, and something they have obviosuly known and been working on, is their device line.
Why is AT&T so popular? The iPhone of course...
If you don't like the iPhone, or don't like AT&T, check out Verizon, they've got that Droid!..
Oh wait, I don't like Verizon either... Tmob has a Droid Eris, right?
Wait, Tmob sucks... What's Sprint got? A TP2 that costs me 299?!, so yeah, that Droid looks good.
People are obsessed with what device they have, and THEN about their coverage. It's the only way AT&T can get away with jacking up their iPhone prices that high -- while Sprint offers the SAME plan for 30-40 a month cheaper.
But to answer your question, Sprint's coverage is great for me. Granted I'm in Texas (Sprint has 4G all over the place here), but for the cheaper plan and great coverage, I would say Sprint is probably the best carrier in my region. Why are so few people using Sprint? -my main guess (and I think its a good one) is that Sprint has crap phones.

I don't think you can call 51.9 million Sprint subscribers (as of January 2010) "so few". Verizon had 67.2 million, and AT&T was sitting at 71.3 million. So take into account that the AVERAGE cell phone subscriber only knows what they see in commercials, the 15.3 million difference between Sprint and Verizon is easy to imagine. I have run into countless employees who have no idea that Sprint rates are better than Verizon's. They always cite, "Verizon has better coverage...", then I show them the rate difference and they swap over. Not to mention that coverage areas for Sprint and Verizon are almost the same. That being said, AT&T only has 3.9 million more than Verizon, and that can be attributed to the iPhone craze.

I'm in the same predicament, except I started taking advantage of Sprint's 30 day guarantee, and am trying out different phones until the EVO gets here. (~$30 a pop when you return it)
I have a touch pro, and last month tried the Moment, it was cool, but had to return it.
Now I have the Pre, and I'm liking it so much (other than having to figure out how to pop open they keyboard with one hand) that I'm afraid I might not be able to return it.
[email protected] had mentioned that a number of 4G phones are to be released this year, I'm wondering if I should wait until the fall to make a decision on what phone is to keep my upgrade credit.

I was thinking of doing that lol. I had the Pre for a month and return it. All I need is a good device (the Evo) and being a sprint premier customer, I get 1 year contracts. So hopefully that hold me over till the next great device .

Not sure you can do that since Verizon and Sprint have different types of networks. Maybe a Droid 2 Global?
Verizon and Sprint actually do have the same type of network (they both use CDMA), but it would be next to impossible to get a phone from one network activated on the other. Unfortunately, it isn't like the SIM cards, where you can just unlock the phone and put in another carrier's SIM. From what I hear, Verizon won't activate an ESN (device identifier) that isn't from a device they have sold.
Not sure about Sprint, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully doing it in a LONG time.
actually, they dont operate on different network types. sprint and verizon both definitely run on CDMA, and their phones can technically function on either network. the problem is that the IMEI's for each network are only valid on their respective network. If your IMEI is not on the particular network then it will not activate on that network.
the general rule of thumb with sprint and verizon phones: if it doesnt have the corresponding carrier branding on the phone in some fashion, then it will not activate on that particular network.
Also, carrier reps for both of these carriers will not add in your IMEI no matter how much money you say you will throw at them.

My apologies for being misinformed.
I use to have a BB storm and once you "unlocked" it you could use it on other networks. I seem to recall a lively discussion on crackberry.com regarding which networks with which it would work. Now perhaps that's because the storm had CDMA/GSM capabilities, but I'm not sure.
I had a Storm as well. When you unlocked it, you could get it to work on AT&T and T-Mobile, because it was a global phone with a SIM card. You couldn't get 3G on any of the US Carriers, since the 3G frequencies are different in the US and in the rest of the world (so the data would be confined to slow 2G rates).
I did see a rumor recently that T-Mobile eventually did something to lock US Storms out of their networks.
http://crackberry.com/t-mobile-killing-service-unlocked-storm-devices
If you get the Droid 2 Global, you should be able to unlock it and run it on AT&T or T-Mobile with a SIM card. You most likely won't be able to get 3G, though. Probably not worth it.
Hopefully, when Verizon switches to LTE some time in the next year, the phones will be compatible across carriers. From what I understand, Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T are all switching to LTE. It sounds like Sprint is investigating, and my guess is that they will go that direction (ditching WiMax in the long-term). However, I wouldn't put it past the carriers to lock other US devices out of their networks.
Regardless, this won't help much with getting a device to run on Sprint. I'm sure that there will be some more cool Android Devices coming out for Sprint in the future.
A colleague of mine recently activated a DROID X on Sprint, but it was a hassle all around.
Programming the phone through QPST was annoying but doable, it was getting the phone's ESN added to the Sprint database that was a real hassle.
Eventually, my colleague had to work with somebody in Overland Park, KS. (Sprint's HQ) to get it done. After 11 phone calls to Sprint Customer Service (which were totally clueless), he finally sent a FedEx to Steve Elfman's office (President Network Operations) before anybody at Sprint was willing to even consider the addition. A few days after the Fedex was received, somebody from Mr. Elfman's office called my colleague back and worked with him to accomplish the addition.
After all is said and done, my colleague is happy that his DROID X is now on Sprint, but he has said a few times now that it really was not worth the effort that he had to put into it to get it accomplished.

[Q] 4G antenas

I have a question: when I move from *Verizon* to sprint they said that the town I leave in, had 4G, (witch is true) but only on some parts of this town.
I did call Sprint and mention to them my dilemma, (bla, bla, bla) they took me of the contract (nice on their part) and they said that they might put more towers in the future (now, you know how that works) "future".
Near where I leave is a 'tower' that they rent out to other networks, so I did the foot work to see if 'perhaps' sprint would be interested to talk to this person or business, and put a '4G' tower this side of town.
My problem I have try to call Sprint, and I have being bounce from person to person, on their system and getting frustrated, of their ignorance of their 'tech' and other support they have.
Has any one *help* ware I can send a email or text to convey this info?
Sprint and Verizon use different 4G networks. If your getting into a new contract with Sprint then you can get a WiMax 4G phone from them which will work.
Also if Operator isn't looking at that area already then there is little chance they will even consider anything. The fact is they have scouted potentional areas already and probably have gotten a offer from the person who owns said tower. Or that they already use the tower but wont put 4G in it for awhile. All places have a "future" for 4G. Also look at CLearwire's page and check out the coverage for 4G. Sprint uses Clear's services as they own a majority share in the company.
No offense, but Clear probably isn't looking for this kind of input. I'm sure they have a plan and reach out to the owners of towers as they need to. Clear is barely staying afloat at this point, so their expansion has slowed down quite a bit.
You're not even talking to the right company. Sprint buys 4G wholesale from Clear, who owns and maintains the network. (Sprint does own 51% of Clear, but it's still a separate company.)

Waaaaait...
Sprint will let you out of contract if there's no 4G in your area?
I don't get 4G where I live, I'd have to drive ~20-25 miles north to see 4G. Does that mean I can get out of the contract? If so... could I re-signup and get a Nexus S for $200 (which, btw, is less than what I could easily sell my EVO for)?
Completely serious question... will this work?

I highly doubt that. If I understand correctly, he had just signed up with Sprint. He was told there was 4g in his area - and there is, but not close enough - so he called Sprint. They let him out of the contract most likely because it was a legitimate complaint and because the contract was fairly new. I highly doubt that you could call Sprint, complain about lack of 4g, and have them cancel your contract... especially if you've been with them for more than a month.
Dream on, though

This is true; they know where the towers are, who the leasing representatives are, and if there is space available on said tower.
Nice footwork though!
Sprint contract
Guys, just to let you know.
That, when I call Sprint (moving from Verizon) my intention wasn't to get out of the contract, i have explain to them, that 'originally' said that our town have 4G, they (tech support) at first that maybe could be the phone, so they reset the phone two times reinstall the os, and they came to the conclusion (at their own) that 4G wasn't in my part of town.
They ask me what would I like to do, I mention that I like the Sprint plan $69.99, even I can't get 4G close by, they said that to make me feel better they cancel my contract, I said OK!
They give me a cancelation number, as a proof.
I stay even with that minor problem, I can tether my laptop, 3G is OK not to bad, I like the email part unlimited text and call to any network.
I have a question for the fellow that said: will sell his EVO and get Nexus?
I love the EVO and what the Nexus have that the EVO can't do? Will still be with out 4G?
Thanks I have post it on the 'clear wire' site.
Never said never, and you never know, ware the conversation will end.
Thinking positive!

Verizon

does anyone know if this will be 4g, I assume no, but a guy can hope can't he?
From what I've read on the tech sites, VZW is supposed to be the first U.S. carrier to get the phone and it's supposed to be LTE. Time frames talked about were Q3/Q4. AT&T is supposed to be next, following VZW by a quarter. No time frame mentioned for Sprint but they're supposed to be getting a variant. It looks like T-Mobile's getting a higher-spec version of the monster-screened Infuse called Hercules instead of the SGS2.

I pre-ordered the Note 3 on ting the day it went up on their website and recieved it on 11/6. I love the phone, but unfortunately 4G service has not worked once since I've had it. At first I assumed it was a bad phone so I called for an exchange. The tech support wanted to ensure I was in a 4G area so they asked me to do a side by side with another ting/Sprint phone to verify that it was indeed a bad phone. I knew for sure that I had been in a 4G coverage area with no luck, but I went along with it because overall, given some people's level of tech knowledge, I thought it was a reasonable request. I did the test, and just like I suspected, my wife's ting S4 had 4G just fine, while my Note 3 was stuck on 3G. So I called again a few days later seeking my exchange. This time, I was told that the problem was actually a known issue on Sprint's end. Apparently, because it was a new tri-band phone, Sprint was experiencing some problems on the new frequencies, so all newer phones were having the same problem. That would seem like a reasonable explanation; problem is the Note 3 is not a tri-band device. I kindly explained that to the tech, who then put me on hold. He came back with a new explanation: the problem was on ting's end, a software glitch that was mis-identifying Note 3's to the Sprint Network as 3G only devices. He assured me that they were working on the problem and would contact me when it was fixed. Sure enough, I got an email about a week later asking me to do a factory reset on my phone, and all would be good. I did, and all is not good, still no 4G. The tech than said he would elevate the issue with Sprint technical support. I'm still waiting to here the results. Frankly I'm getting tired of waiting. I'm going to call again tomorrow [12/3] and ask to return the phone.

Up until this issue I've loved ting. I switched over in March and have saved lots of money on service, $50 to $70 per month! I've recommended them to several friends. As far as I can tell the service quality and coverage is identical to Sprint. There is no data roaming, but I reviewed my Sprint bills prior to switching, and less than 1% of my data was roaming anyway so I could live without that in exchange for the savings.
When you call, a person answers the phone as well, which is nice.
I'm a ting fan, but they need to make me happy fast to me to remain one.
