Bye bye, X10! - XPERIA X10 General

Yesterday I sold my terrible phone called the Xperia X10.
Why?
Because I decided to return back to my delightful, happy iPhone. The Xperia x10 is much more complicated and advanced.
There are so many un needed apps (Moxie, Officesuite, GMAIL? Who uses Google Mail?).
The jailbreaking on the iPhone is almost 100 times easier. Go to a site through iPhone browser, slide a button, and you're done! And with Cydia, you can get themes, Installous (which gives you free paid applications) and Ringtones, anything without having to use all the codes and going to the root of your SD card.
The iPhone has iTunes. Much easier to browse applications and download them from your computer.
The battery life is MUCH better. I don't have to worry about it one bit, I don't have to say "No, I can't risk turning internet on or else I'll lose 50% of my battery."
The screen is much more responsive. The X10's lock screen lags and is sometimes unresponsive.
I agree, the iPhone's camera is a bit worse than the x10's, but honestly, when I swapped between 8MP and 2MP on the x10 I could barely see a difference. So it's not a big problem for me.
Overall, iPhone has a much better background for me and it is a much better phone than the X10. I will never buy a Google/Sony phone again.
Thank you to everyone who helped me out, but thank goodness I didn't root or debrand my phone. If I did, I would be stuck with this phone forever. This will most likely be my last post.
Bye!

Glad you are happy.
So am i with my X10.

Who are you trying to convince?

Maybe i'm the only one who uses Gmail.

@M3mPh1z You!

I totally agree with you man. The only thing keeping me with the mofo useless phone is windows phone 7. Once a phone is released for it I will dump the x10 into the river. This will be my last Sony product ever.

Congratulations! The iPhone is the smart phone for dumb people after all. Android phones are smart phones for smart people so not everyone can be expected to be able to use it properly.
Btw, who doesn't use gmail? Gmail is the best mail client.
I find it disgusting that you use installous. It is people like you that ruin the development of applications. If you really wanted an app like installous on the market though, that's what Apktor is for.
Yes, so much fun browsing through so many useless and pointless apps.
You seriously can't tell the difference between the 2mp photo and an 8mp photo? You more then likely didn't realise that too notice the difference you have to look at the photo on a computer with higher resolutions, or zooming in but that is why you have gone back to the iPhone.
You're just not intelligent enough to handle an android phone!

This is a great example of people having different tastes. The OP likes the iPhone better for the reasons he mentions and that's his prerogative. My taste in phones differs, I'm not a fan of iOS and prefer Android. What's so hard at leaving it at that, is it unreasonable to expect common decency?
I got rid of my iPhone because I had problems with the way the App Store procedure works but you don't see me flaming iPhone forums about it. Doing that would only take up time and I have way more productive and better things to do.
In short, ditch the X10 if you want but leave us out of it. Topics like this only reflects badly on the OP anyways so what's the point?

Sorry but in my class 3 of the top 5 students uses an iPhone. And a confirmed fact, iPhone users get laid a lot more than android users. True talk. And no I don't have an iPhone and will never get one.

Hey, I'm not flaming anybody. I just posted this topic to inform any people who are planning to get either an Android phone or another phone about the differences (in my opinion, anyways.) It was also just a farewell notice for the people who had tried to help me get through my problems with the phone when I had it. Ignorant people like Findee could obviously not understand that, and shed tears and blood to defend their phone because they want to know that they spent their money in a good fashion. Calling me dumb for my opinion? I think we all know who's not "intelligent enough" to even handle a post!

So you found rooting the X10 difficult??? just downloading a 153kb file, installing it then clicking root was difficult??? Yep,stick to the iPhone then, i understand your other points, but that one is a tad ridiculous realy.
Hope you enjoy your iPhone as much as im enjoying my X10 ive found multiple 3rd party app stores like Cydia for it without having to codes or whatever you were on about.

No, of course that wasn't hard. I didn't say it was hard. I said the iPhone jailbreaking is MUCH easier, and just the tad bit of ease can save you from bricking your phone.

Well to be fair, jailbreaking the iPhone can potentially brick it while rooting the X10 can't. There's just no way you can mess it up with the apk-root.

Don't feed the trolls people.....

Hah, as if am gonna listen to any word you say after that.

Rooting is done by installing an app, themes can be installed through launchers, and tones can be set through settings, all free btw.

You said it all, iOS is more easy to use, with cydia everything is easy.
But for me it's dirty, jailbreak really ruin the perf. (I got a iOS device too).
And gui is outdated, too poor for me.
Anyway, if you like it, go on !

So you just shown us that you haven't used your X10 enough.
First of all, to root your X10 you only need to download an app called x10root(150kb), install it, press ROOT, you are done, if you what to revert it, press unroot, hard, isn't it?
About free apps, you have an app called APKtor that has thousands of paid apps for free, working like the market, it even tells you which updates are avaliable.
About themes, there are hundred of free themes(launchers) like ADW, about wallpapers and ringtones, you can download them in your PC and then copy them to your phone or you can download an app called ZEDGE that let's you browse through thousands of wallpapers and ringtones, everything without rooting your phone.
The iPhone has iTunes. Much easier to browse applications and download them from your computer.

Universal to an iPhone?

Hello fellas and ladies!
My brother got an iPhone a few weeks ago and of course I have been testing it and comparing it to my first love (universal), which is still up for sale if anyone is interested !!!
I would like to mention the following (based on my comparison with my Uni) and ask you a question!
Pros:
3G/wifi internet is faster on the iPhone
- On Uni I have tried with Opera 9.5 and IE
Games are so much more advanced and flawless especially with the accelerometer!
Battery with heavy use on the iPhone lasts a little over a day! The Uni lasts much less with heavy use!! The battery on the Uni is terrible...
Cons:
No SD slot
Battery is not easily accessible
I hate iTunes
practically no cracked/patched soft/games <----- Huge downfall!!
At the moment I can't think of much else.
I can't wait for Omni any longer, they've been promising it for over a year and nothing yet.
So my question is: Would you consider switching from the Uni to the iPhone, and why?

I have respectfully read and agreed with most points in that thread!
However! my main reason for getting the iPhone would be internet access and battery life. Yes! I said it! battery life! my Uni will not last 5 hours internet browsing + video + music + games + work (word, notepad, calc, txt, mail, camera and so on) And I don't want to get an extended battery as its bulky as it is.
As much as we all want to hate the iPhone (me included!), we can't deny its internet browsing speeds both on WiFi and 3G (which is at the moment my main interest) Also GPS, accelerometer (fun!) and the crisp LCD! + more of which I can't think of right now.
I also have a problem with my Uni losing signal quiet often, and I get complaints that I'm unreachable!!! and I have tried many ROMs and Radios to fix this.
I don't know if its the hype of the iPhone or my frustration with the Uni that I'm considering it.
I guess, I just want a phone that works and capable of browsing 3G speeds...
But I will miss all the necessities that PPC offers!
Why can't someone on this forum flash the iPhone with WM6.1???!!!! Now that would be sweet!
I don't know what to do, I'm in dire need of battery life + 3G speed + 3.5 LCD (and above) + compact and accelerometer lol
Any thoughts?
I had an Iphone and sold it....as a gadget is nice specially for its multimedia features, but as a convergence device falls short in many ways..I wouldn't even consider trade it back for my HtC tilt much less for the Uni.
Could you buy/check in your country Samsung i900 Omnia? Much more features than iPhone, everybody speaks very good about it, and in Italy even cheaper than iPhone.
If I had to choose between Omnia and iPhone no doubt for Omnia, but I still have my Universal and it still works so good (even better with all the ROMS here )

I completely agree with you and I'm not even thinking of it as a replacement of my beloved Uni no matter how many times my Uni losses signal. I've even considered carrying them both in my two pockets, and yes I am joking!! but the thought did cross my mind!
But wouldn't you confirm that the battery life is better, 3G/WiFi is faster, and undoubtedly we'll see some development as far as hacks and manipulations with the ROM... I'm really hoping that someone can flash it with WM6.1 now that would be an awesome phone!

We do have the i900 up here, but I don't want to downgrade to a smaller screen if anything I'd like a larger one. Aside from the screen size it's a very impressive phone!
I don't understand why manufacturers do this moronic.... THING!!!! its absolutely frustrating why would you compete (i900) with the iPhone which has a 3.5" lcd with a 3.2"!!!!???? if only i900 had a larger screen I wouldn't even turn my head in iPhone's direction....... uuuuhhhhggggghhhhhhh
Why not get a touch diamond or touch pro? I have gone from the XDA Exec (Universal) to the diamond and am happy.
The on screen keyboard is tricky at first but my diamond flies and gets over a day so far when using GPS / Wifi etc. I would have gone for the pro as I am very used to the unis keyboard but in the end I couldn't justify the £150+ on top of what I got my Diamond for to go with the Pro just for the keyboard, card slot and extra memory. Try one out you might be surpised how nice they are and what they offer

I wish it was that easy, but I can't seem to settle with a smaller screen size than the one I have now.. I simply can't.
I appreciate your recomendation but the screen size is stopping me from moving past this obsession with the iPhone! Also, the speed of the 3G/WiFi as I mentioned above is what pushing me to get the iPhone...
All the people I know who own an iPhone not only are they happy with it but with every passing day they enjoy it even more.
The iPhone is far from being a good phone for buisiness use. You have limitations with e-mails, you don't synchronise easily with Outlook, the contacts are not accessed as easily as on WM6 and that is a very important aspect, if you have many contacts in your list.
The iPhone will make you scroll much more through the list, which is time consuming.
I tried the browsing, but the lack of keyboard is frustrating. The browser might be quite good, but it is not THAT much better.
iTunes is too annoying for me - I don't want to synchronize my musics, I just want to copy my mp3 songs. I HATE iTunes and would NEVER buy an iPod unless they change that.
Then you get a completly locked device, no memory expansion, no SDK, no freeware,...
I know - there now is a free SDK, but it is limited (cannot access all funtions) and developers have to pay to publish it, which means there won't be freeware.
All in all, I would say, the iPhone looks good, is a nice gadget and suits a normal user fine.
I however like to have something more powerfull: great screen, keyboard, lots of software and emulators. Hell, on the Universal you can even run DOS!
Cheers,
vma

These are the reasons as to why I still haven't committed to an iPhone.
It would be very hard to go from a Uni to something so "LOCKED" and "ONE DIMENSIONAL" But I do need a fast internet browsing device and a better battery life without the bulk, and not to mention the ability to receive calls in a home's basement which my Uni is not capable of doing.
Perhaps I'll wait until the G1 comes out as orb3000 said but than again I've seen it and its hideous!
I don't know... I just need a phone that works with fast browsing abilities, but then again I'll miss all the things that the Uni and WM represent!!
Honestly try a touch pro or diamond for a few hours - get one and send it back if not happy? I think you will be surprised

ahhh...Not true, with the latest firmware you can search through your contacts like in WM6
[QOUTE]
The iPhone will make you scroll much more through the list, which is time consuming.[/QOUTE]
Again, this is not true; for alphabetically arranged stuff in a list you can use the Alphabet row on the Right hand side to quickly scroll, otherwise IMHO scrolling is a lot easier with the new Multi-touch vs taking out the stylus and using it to scroll.
[QOUTE] tried the browsing, but the lack of keyboard is frustrating. The browser might be quite good, but it is not THAT much better.[/QOUTE]
Again, safari is miles ahead of internet explorer, using NF or opera reduces the margin by a fair margin, but guess what, all the sites that have been "optimized" for the iphone really fit seamlessly with the entire UI, and that is what makes safari a joy to use. Actually if you have an iphone (or can beg, borrow or steal one) try going to web sites like google, yahoo, amazon, facebook and see the difference yourself
[QOUTE]iTunes is too annoying for me - I don't want to synchronize my musics, I just want to copy my mp3 songs. I HATE iTunes and would NEVER buy an iPod unless they change that.[/QOUTE]
with the new itunes and the 2.0.x firmware , you can drag and drop your music into your iphone.
if you don't want to sync your PIM to outlook, you can forgo itunes completely and use a "FREE" winamp plugin"
going a bit off topic i simply HATE active-sync.(i may be a bit biased here as i owned a palm pilot and simply loved the simplicity and stability of Hot-sync
[QOUTE]Then you get a completly locked device, no memory expansion, no SDK, no freeware,...[/QOUTE]
Again, when we got our devices (UNI in our case) did we not have to worry about CID unlock, SIM unlock ???
How is jailbreaking and unlocking the iphone any different than what we did??
As far as an memory expansion slot is concerned, HTC is coming out with more and more devices without expansion slot, so why just blame apple??
[QOUTE]I know - there now is a free SDK, but it is limited (cannot access all funtions) and developers have to pay to publish it, which means there won't be freeware.[/QOUTE]
1)Yes, the SDK is free but is limited
2)Search for open toolchain to know how to get complete access
3)since you don't use iphone/itunes you have NO CLUE about the amount of free ware available through itunes. And did i mention that most of the software on the installer app and CYDIA is FREE.
talking bout "limited access", did the CORE player guys ever get access to the nVidia graphic accelerator in some HTC's??
[QOUTE]All in all, I would say, the iPhone looks good, is a nice gadget and suits a normal user fine.[/QOUTE]
very true
[QOUTE]I however like to have something more powerfull: great screen, keyboard, lots of software and emulators. Hell, on the Universal you can even run DOS![/QOUTE]
1)Uni's screen is CRAP. on a mildly sunny day, at max brightness the screen is completely washed out and unreadable.Yes it does have a VGA screen but the color reproduction, contrast is really really bad.
the iphone's screen on the other hand is FANTASTIC. with the sun beating down hard, the thing is still very readable!!! not to mention the contrast, brightness and colour reproduction is very good.
BTW when will HTC realise that it is time to R.I.P for the 65k screens???
2)leaving the 3g stuff apart, the iphone is way more powerful than are UNI (which is to be expected as the UNI is almost 3 years old)
3)if you can run DOS on the UNI, i can run UNIX bash on the iphone
4)there are loads of free QUALITY softwares and emulators available for the iphone (free and paid)
P.S- i made the switch from my uni to the iphone last year in oct. and have not regretted the decision even once.
heck its been more than 3 months since i last charged my UNI

not a problem at all.
however bear in mind that your choice should be decided on what you intend to do with your phone.
if you REPLY to lot of emails/ need PUSH-email/edit documents / then stay away from the iphone.
if on the otherhand , you only read emails (or only occasionally reply) and want a good, simple and stable phone with excellent multimedia functions, go for the iphone.
on a side note, i felt that my UNI was never a good "phone", i always had problems with signal strength, people complained that my voice was to 'muffled' or choppy.
after switching over to the iphone, i have not experienced these problems, now it very well may be that my cell service provider has upgraded there equipment or installed a new tower in my vicinity, but i have reason to think otherwise
Never get rid of my Uni
Yes, I'll never get rid of it! It's a great device!
I laugh at those who carry around their laptops and cellphones. I have it in my pocket... Running WM, linux or Dos - trying to run Android, what would you want more...
hey guys just got my iPhone...
Would like to point out that so far I'm not impressed but I am loving the fast internet speeds. YouTube quality is absolutely horible; I am very disapointed with its quality very choppy but is still watchable.
I'm enjoying the fact that I can post using my phone, hoever entering text is very difficult and uncomfortable but I'm sure I can get used to it.
I will try to compare it to the Uni and report back

choppy video...
how fast is your internet speed???
Sorry I haven't been home enough to make a comparison to my Uni...
What I found out is that the streaming video quality of the iPhone is as much pixelsted as on any other device, so I take back what I said above.
The 3G speeds are well beyond what I expected and a significantly faster than on my Uni.
I am very pleased with it right now and I can't wait to jailbreak it. I wish we had a section for the iPhone on this forum...
I'm posting using the iPhone, and the texting i'm getting used to so no issues with that!
Overall very pleased!
P.S. I've yet to try out the games..

X1 goes in the draw tomorrow...

time for an iPhone 3G S tomorrow! yay...
X1 was the biggest dissapointment ever for me! this phone was so over hyped and then when it finally came out the panels interface was just this biggest flop ever! still is...i mean seriously?!?!? where are they all?
anyway...enough of all this windows mobile ****...even 6.5 is a let down...
i guess thats why i'm also buying a MacBook Pro next week too!

Well .. I'm quite disappointed too .. but iPhone just wont cut it for me. For example I require playback of non-converted videos in common formats (avi, mpg, flv). No smartphone can do that well at the moment.
I'm at the moment I'm staying with Xperia and hoping that Palm wont block 3rd part media player development ..
But sure, iPhone, especially the new one, looks great, and everything it can do it does better. Way better.

The panels interface was indeed the most useless thing ever. That's why I uninstalled it. Although you have had some problems with the X1, you'll encounter new ones with the new iPhone. Add to that, you'll be paying a bucketload of money for that new device. Why would you buy a MacBook? Windows mobile =/ Windows.

Interesting that you're still using both. Apparently the iPhone lacks something that the X1 doesn't.

All in all, personally I prefer the X1 (or any WVGA HTC WM phone) over the iPhone because it's customizable. I like being able to tinker around with it. I also prefer Microsoft's approach (although, I'm aware, they're just as imperfect as any other company) to operating systems.
Then again the iPhone does have much better graphical support, smoother UI etc.
If only Apple and Microsoft would merge
iPhone is for tech illiterate sheep that want to look trendy in front of their equally degenerated friends. Flashy, useless, unproductive toy with features that phones had in 1999............
let us know how you like your iphone.
i was looking and playing with one the other day. it was ok but i like the customization that you can do on the windows mobile. i like the big screen but i didnt like the touch (capacitance?). i like to use my fingernails a bit and it doesnt work on the iphone screen.
The major problem with the iPhone for me is the lack of a hardware keyboard. I can handle a normal phone keypad, prefer a qwerty keyboard but cannot type on a touchscreen. I don't care what some people say, for me, a touchscreen keyboard is not good enough.

Its not just the xperia its self that puts it down - its the lack of a Microsoft Marketplace yet and Windows mobile 6.5 - xperia would be a lot better if Windows Mobile Market place was available and if the scrolling on it was iphone smooth other than that i like my xperia

have You ever had an iphone in Your hand? obviously You are talking nonsense. these days You can do almost every thing on ipod that it's doable on winmo. okay... it is not so customizable, but it's interface is simple and just works. works like a charm. I am keeping xperia only untill september and after that I'll get iphone 3gs or something else, maybe n97 or omnia hd. dunno... it pisses me off that for instance I cannot view videos recorded with my wifes n95 8gb without reencoding. that is just f... silly this days.
why iphone 3gs? well... I went to o2 store yesterday to have a look and I am simply amazed. speed. SPEEED..... it is just that feeling of smootheness of whatever You do on those non wm devices.

please, feel free to give me some reasons why it is worthy to stick with windows mobile except rom flashing and customization of visuals... multitasking is nice, true, but how often You just cannot live without it?? well I can...

Exactly what i want in xperia and the smoothness is the main reason i am drawn to the iphone - if the xperia is just as powerfull as the iphone 3G (if not more) why cant it be as smooth is it to do with the resistive touchscreen????

u say that u cant view videos recorded with an n95 8gb on ur x1 without re-encoding it(i can btw), but how do u intend to do it using an iPhone?
if You are saying that You can view those videos recorded @ 640 x 480 highest quality on n95 8gb smoothly without massive stuttering, then You are lying. period. I never said that I want an iphone to watch my wifes videos, the other thing is that I never said that I hate xperia. as a matter of fact I still like it a lot, but I am bit tired with this all customize & tweak me for weeks stuff just to realise it is still slow.

I guess when you get something like an iPhone it works fine out of the box you dont need to tweak it to get it right which is which is what i dont get from windows mobile devices - why are they not already tweaked to offer the best performance?
simple example - why, oh why those simple tweaks like increasing of glyph and filesystem cache are not factory set for performance??
couldnt agree more with u on the disappointment part, sony ericsson produced one hell of a **** expensive phone.. sometimes im even using my old 1st gen iphone :s
Xperia broken.
Last Saturday my X1 broke. I was at a party and decided to jump over a car gate at an old summerhouse. Thing is, it wasn't steadied at all or fastened in the ground, so it swung with my body, resulting in me landing hard on it and it gave my Xperia a good blow. Now half the screen is dead and the slider part is crooked, and I don't have insurance on it so it'll cost me about 100 - 200 dollars to get it fixed.
That is why I'm getting an iPhone 3GS when it comes to Sweden. I like the seamless Mac experience that just works (and is really great looking) and, actually, the fact that I'm not gonna want to flash it every other day.
Don't get me wrong here, I'm quite the avid customizer of all things techy, and I love playing around with settings and tweaks just to feel like I'm improving my device. Now really. I understand why the people here at XDA like their devices - it's because of the new roms. BUT. It's simply retarded for the company making the phone not to include those optimisations OOTB. I understand that a lot of things is set slower by default to gain battery and ensure a safe phone, but let's face it. An iPhone provides a better experience for ALL customers, not only the ones who know how to tweak their device.
I'd suggest by simple human psychology patterns that people like tweaking their phones because it brings them a satisfactory sense of being special - knowing something not all the owners of a particular thing knows. Though, think about it. It would be kind of nice to be free of the constant urge to flash your phone, all you flashoholics? I sure know that I feel that way. Sort of like being free from a time consuming freedom or wanting a schedule when you have nothing but free time.
That's just my two cents, I won't miss my Xperia much. I'm rather glad it broke (although it was a blow to my economics, but hey).

Xperia gripes. Help

I've had my xperia for about 3 days now, using it non-stop at home, on the go, etc.
I'm having a lot of mixed feelings: i like it, and disappointed in it at the same time.
Please enlighten me in each of the following.. help me learn to love the phone instead of regret it.
1) My biggest gripe: The form factor, the thickness, the small touchscreen embedded WITHIN borders as opposed to a front flat. Admit it.. it feels like a brick.
2) Lack of panels.. Lack of applications (look at apple's app store)
3) The responsiveness.. the overall phone is dodgy, menus take seconds to load, camera and its settings are slow, buttons and inputs are not instantaneous... I've an ipod touch for about more then half a year now, those who've experienced with Apple products know what I mean by 'immediate response' (and in NO WAY am i supporting apple, I am just doing this comparison to illustrate the difference of response)
All these gripes i would have set aside if the price tag was about $100 - $200 dollars CHEAPER. When I'm paying so much, I expect something decent :|
Now for my praises:
1) Biggest plus; It has windows live mail, and windows live messenger, something the iPhone will never have.
2) Panels CONCEPT.
3) The beautiful colors (xperia wall)
4) Keypad, lots of control/input: trackpad, d-pad, touchscreen & stylus
If you've read all that, In no way am i critcizing the xperia as a whole. It's my user-preference I speak with and individual opinion. I, for one, am bothered by all the gripes I have mentioned. I've searched for smartphones for a long time now and none has even PEAKED my interest besides the xperia and the iPhone. The problem is that the iPhone is out of the question because I can't get it. So my question is... What should I do? As in should i stay with the xperia, what can I do with the xperia to make me satisfied with it, etc.
Hey,
dude u need to flash a new ROM. Xperia 'out of the box' looks nice but doesn't work as well as it looks. once you've flashed a ROM it works nicer than it looks.
Im using agent_47 ROM...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=512050
admittedly there are a few bugs every now n then but its nothing that eventually won't be fixed.
Dude there are loooaaddss of panels available. just search the forums. there are also loaaadss of apps available...you just have to find them. tomtom7, facebook, skype, super mario just to give some examples.
So in summary, find a ROM that you like and flash it
Adam
Thanks but it doesn't compensate for the fact that the phone is bulky with a screen embedded within borders. Even though the iPhone may be bigger in volume, at least it has a large screen (thats NOT in border) to make up for its size.
My issue is.. i feel no matter what I change about the software and interface, it'd still feel bricky in my hands, when getting a call; trying to touch the tiny buttons on the embedded screen with my thumbs -___-
What other third party panels could possibly benefit me? Aren't most of them just home screens, mobile shell, etc.
Panels I'd like to see include paralelling the apple app store; at least have the defaults like the facebook panel: twitter, youtube, notes, pocketoffice panel, dictionary, games, etc. Funny how advertisements show panels with different colours but none are remotely worthy to be put. I only have about 7 panels, and i even tolerated putting the fish and clock one.
arikado as adam18488 has said you need a new windows mobile rom.
Most of your Points are related to the Software of the Windows Mobile Computer Operating System.
The WinMo ROM that is shiped with X1 has heavy lags with video rendering.
You are not the only one who is disopointed with the OS on X1.
Iphone works out of the box -Apps store has loads and is v easy ...but you can't customise!
Xperia WILL dissapoint out of the box ...you need to make it yours -customise, tweak etc
If you are new at all this ....the last thing you should do is Flash a custom ROM imho
You need to read LOADS and start small with the tweaks
I was underwhelmed when I first got mine ...a couple of weeks of reading and trialling were quite frustrating (without this forum it would have been impossible)
About a month in I got it all set up the way I liked it ...8 months on I still LOVE it and have continued to make small tweaks (including upgrading the stock ROM twice -now on the current R3A & video works flawlessly BTW)
Take a look at threads like "post your today screen" and the like to see how wide the options are
The WIKI is a must, as are most of the Stickies

arikado,
Did you not at least feel the phone in person before buying it? You can't really whine now that you've bought the phone. It was your responsibility as a customer to ensure that everything about the phone met your expectations before you handed over the cash.
Should've done your homework first. If the phone feels like a brick to you, then even the Touch Pro 2 or even the N97 will feel like a brick because those are -huge- phones.
If you don't want a recessed screen, I strongly suggest the TouchHD, that's about it or wait for the next Xperia, or go with the HTC Hero, or HTC Magic.
Cheers.
Yes - we can't help you now with hardware issues. If you don't like the hardware you should not have bought it. Anyway:
If you are a fan of finger UI's then read about Mobile Shell 3.0. It allows you to do almost everything with your finger. There is also a cab available that imrpoves the responsibility :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=485037&highlight=softtouch
Here you go: X1 SoftTouch.
Well..there are panels, but you are right - not as much as I would have liked!
And there are apps, but not as much because 800x480 screensize is rather new
to phones. Give them some time.
The "borders" around the screen you are taking about is a negative thing on that phone. But like already mentioned: swop with a Touch HD. It is more likely "your" kind of phone!

Orelsi reporting in .
1 - I don't mind the thikness, because you get a full keyboard. You can't beat that. The recessed screen is one of my major gripes as well, but it has one (only one lol) good thing going for it - when you drop it, the screen will not get damaged. I admit that it is a brick.
2 - Not true. There are some panels floating around. There are THOUSANDS of apps and games for WinMo and most of them are NOT like these:
http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2009/fortune/0907/gallery.dumbest_iphone_apps.fortune/index.html Just read and search .
3- Everything that you listed can be fixed by custom ROMs or tweaks of the system. My only advice is to read the "sticky" topics and then browse the forum for whatever you want.
My X1 has the regular firmware and is lightning fast thanks to massive tweaking and installing of useful apps.
If you can't find anything using the search function, feel free to ask the helpful people in this forum .
If you want a phone that works fine "out of the box" : got an Iphone but you will never be able to customize it
If you want a bigger screen: Got a Touch HD but no hardware keyboard, screen less responsive (my opinion), not really faster
If you want to keep your Xperia: learn about tweaking and flashing rom
My 2 centimes:
- Yes the firmware is painfully slow. This is really the major limitation of this phone out of the box.
- I have not yet flashed a custom ROM (on R2A) but am very hopeful that this improves the snappiness
- Buy SPB Mobile Shell 3.01. Outstanding software and well worth the price.
- After a couple weeks/months, I think most Xperiites ditch panels because they are slow and a fairly silly idea. Why press three times to run an application when you have the option to press only once?
- The hardware on this phone is superb and I think you will only come to appreciate it more and more. Bricks may not look the best, but they last a helluva long time.
Is it just me or am I the only one getting a bit bored of the iPhone fanboys repeating the "My iPhone/My mate's iPhone/My fashionista's iPhone is great, the X1 is crap, why?" question?
If you don't like it's size and shape, why buy one?
In regards to apps, typing "Windows Mobile Apps" into Google gets approx 292,000,000 results. Yes, a lot of these will be repeated/links to each other, but there are at least a few sites off the top of my head that can provide hundreds of *legally free* apps, let alone several that can provide lots of paid-for ones. "Oh but the Apple Store is one place" yes, we all get all of our purchases from the same shop. Unless you're a Tesco/Walmart fanboy also?
I must admit, it is a bit of a pain getting fluff and dirt out of the corners of the screen, but a lot less of a pain than smashing the screen like several of my iPhone loving mates have, especially on a thin-bodied device which depends on the screen to work...

HERE is a possible fix for the screen being pushed into the phone - basicially what i noticed was that when i put a screen protector on it obvoiusly raised the screen so i was thinking - maybe if you put two screen protectors on ! it would be at optimum height! just a thought - i might try it

Agreed, everything is down to personal preference, but the iPhone losers cannot stop claiming that their device is THE BEST!!! It obviously isn't and any objective man comparing it to a normal phone can see that. It is a glorified mp4 player and barely qualifies as a feature phone.
The attitude of being uneducated and tech illiterate, but still claiming that your device is the Jesus phone, is what annoys me.
Especially when people start posting about it at a WINMO forum. WTF seriously? Use it, enjoy it, but don't try to make it something it clearly is not. That is why the apple fanboys irritate me.
End of rant lolz .

No one ever accused you of being "objective".
1) My biggest gripe: The form factor, the thickness, the small touchscreen embedded WITHIN borders as opposed to a front flat. Admit it.. it feels like a brick.

Wrong, it feels like a luxury device. Even if the OS was a basic symbian it would still feel grand. Admit it...it feels like it's the ****.
The form factor is perfect. The thickness is actually pretty thin. The touch screen is not satisfactory.
2) Lack of panels.. Lack of applications (look at apple's app store)

Why are you complaining on something that is still being developed? You are one bull****ing fanboy.
Palm Pre > Lack of apps
Android > Lack of tethering @ apps
Apple > Applications are mostly games you turd, and apps are only foreground apps so what is the freaking point?
Look how manys apps that I have for my X1:
3) The responsiveness.. the overall phone is dodgy, menus take seconds to load, camera and its settings are slow, buttons and inputs are not instantaneous... I've an ipod touch for about more then half a year now, those who've experienced with Apple products know what I mean by 'immediate response' (and in NO WAY am i supporting apple, I am just doing this comparison to illustrate the difference of response)

I know what you mean, actually. I have to agree on this. Played with my brother's ipod touch.
All these gripes i would have set aside if the price tag was about $100 - $200 dollars CHEAPER. When I'm paying so much, I expect something decent :|

I think the X1 is worth 900 bucks, but I think it is unfair that the X1i version is a lot cheaper. ****ing bull****. Europeans are lucky!

If you aren't for being organized then get the iPhone...that's all I have to say
Even using apple's software is very inorganized and there is no way for me to mother****ing installed 3rd party schedule applications / alarm applications / automatic profile applications ...so iPhone is just a toy with a lot of games and foreground-only apps.
Xperia keeps me so organized... why? SPB Diary baby. Anyway, just get the Apple because I don't think you're the kind of guy who needs simple features only.
Just listen to me and get the iPhone 3GS and you will be happy.
My most used app is SPB Mobile Shell 3... and AE Button... try them out and it will boost your productivity...
i really loved the batt life of Xperia.. (coming from O2 Atom Life)

Upgrades that will trump the iPhone

OK before anyone starts to flame this thread, these are IMO things in Android that could be upgraded to make the average consumer prefer it to the iPhone.
Now I own an EVO and am fully rooted and running a custom ROM and know a lot of people on here are too, I and I assume everyone one else on here already thinks android is better than IOS.
The point of this thread is to point out improvements in the Android OS that will make the average consumer-meaning someone who doesn't know what an .apk is or has heard of XDA developers, or who thinks a task killer is good for your phone. Keep in mind this is a majority of android users. However I will say that android most likely has the largest amount of developers out of any other mobile OS that tweaks/customizes their phone as well.
Now I owned an iPhone 3GS when it first came out, however returned it because of monthly costs with AT&T. I was on a family plan with Sprint and at the time their were no Android phones at all, the only decent touch screen phone was the palm pre.
I really liked the iPhone because of its user friendliness, and the apps.
I have owned the Hero, Moment, and Now the EVO. My cousin needed help JB his iPhone and I am pretty good with that stuff so i did it for him. he has the 3GS, He was gone most of the day and I really got a chance to look at the iPhone and play around with it.
Well Here it goes..
Core apps/interface improvement
Now I know android is supposed to be open and how the user wants it. Their are widgets, apps, live wallpapers, a lot of cool stuff. However scrolling between screens could be a bit smoother, I think we can all say the iPhone may be dull but the physics engine when it comes to scrolling through lists or screens is pretty damn good. I believe that on android would make it a much better user experience.
Another thing is getting rid of all the blackness. The settings menu, text messaging (before eclair) are all black and very dull looking. brighter, more crisp colors makes the phone look alot nicer.
Lastly a battery indicator when charging the Phone. this is one of the things I liked about the iPhone when it was charging, you get a nice clean battery icon to show how much is charged.
keyboard
Now, this kind of still goes along with that boring black look. The Onscreen KB has certainly gotten better with auto correction and learning the way you type, but it doesn't look like something such an advanced phone would release. I know their is the HTC KB, and Droid X KB, but most people don't know about that stuff. I believe a KB that had brighter colors would make it easier to type. One thing IMO the iPhone does better than android is the On screen KB.
Media sync
Now most people on here hate iTunes, but alot of people like having all of their music, videos, and photos in one place. But I believe with clever advertisement and a good optional media application for your PC alot more people will want an android phone. Lets be fair the EVO's screen is huge, but HTC Or Android did not give users a place to download videos in High quality. I think a nice application for your PC that helps users put stuff on their phone would help people who want music on their phone. I know alot of people with iPhones and 99% have it filled up with all their music. I know a few Android users, and I am the only one who actually puts music on their, the rest still use an iPod.
Now before I get flamed for this. I LIKE ANDROID AND PREFER IT TO IOS. however I believe these are fair things that would make Android better. Yes, for developing and flashing ROMS and tweaking their device Android without question is the best IMO. However the OS still needs a little work to satisfy people who just want a functional but "cool" phone.
Agree?
Disagree?
The are a lot of improvements that could and should be made...
None of them I want marketed to the iPhone "lowest common denominator" crowd. When my brother first switched, he complained about every extra menu he had to go in. When I showed him that that extra menu meant endless customizations he said "cool".
We did that enough times that he now says he won't go back.
Lets go through these line by line.
Now I know android is supposed to be open and how the user wants it. Their are widgets, apps, live wallpapers, a lot of cool stuff. My Evo with custom kernel is very smooth, but I have seen some android phones that are a little laggy. What causes it? Multitasking to many programs? Maybe to many running widgets? I will take the ability to do both of those things over "smoothness"

I like the blackness, if you don't change it... You don't buy android phones to have the color dictated by the manufacturer, you pick, change and choose

Again, choice. DroidX, Stock, Better keyboard, Swype, etc etc etc. Try them all find one that works for you. Or use speech to text, you get the picture. If you buy a 200 dollar smart phone and you can't figure out that there are a **** ton of keyboards in the marketplace the enjoy your iPhone.

It allows you to find your own music and movies without needing itunes. What is easier than drag and drop? Why do I need a clunky interface for what essentially is an easy process?
re: music sync
try doubletwist if you want a syncing app. i don't really want or need it, but it works really well for some others.
the android app was free on the market a few days ago, but for a limited time only is what they said. grab it while it is
Man you are missing the point of the whole post.
I know android allows users on here to customize it to their liking, but I meant for the average consumer who doesn't know what ROMS or rooting is, android could use a little bit of touch ups.
I prefer not having to use a program to manage music, but be honest out of all the people you know with android phones or iPhones which group has more users with music on their phone? I would say the iPhone.
Like I said in the post I know alot of people on here don't like having to use a program to control their music but for their average consumer it makes it easier and more people will like it and buy it.
The KB, again the AVERAGE CONSUMER doesn't know that they have more options. IMO the average user would prefer the iPhone KB because of the brighter colors than the black one on stock android. I Know their are many many different ones to customize and pick from, but most people don't know about those.
I am not saying that the iPhone's OS is superior, but it is popular because it is user friendly and looks nice.
Android works well and lets you customize and with that added smoothness or brighter colors to the OS I would say it would make the average consumer want one over the iPhone.
By physics you mean "easing"

The Evo will never trump the iPhone. Not as long as it's running the second best OS on the market.

Because I got sick of waiting for the white iPhone to come out.

Thanks for confirming that all Evo owners are incredibly shallow. See what I did there? Over generalizing ftl. To each his own. I swapped to an iPhone after a month, not because I hated my Evo, but because Sprint was bad in my area. If you read iPhone boards, they don't whine and complain about the Evo. I don't know why everyone on this board has a complex about the iPhone.
I can agree with the guy above me, its a phone!
Yes this is an Android forum, but the second an iPhone is mentioned everyone starts talking trash about it, its a phone for god sake.

1.) Your call-out makes no sense. The poster was being sarcastic at the other for making a blatantly shallow remark as to why he got the Evo (because there was not a white Iphone available? What the ****? Really?), and you, in turn, called him shallow... that makes absolutely no sense.
2.) As for the rest of your post, I agree... it's more than just fancy specs that make a phone one to buy... in your case, simply HAVING SERVICE was the deal breaker, and rightfully so, lol. I'm the opposite, and AT&T users get absolutely NO service in my apartment buildings, so even if I thought the Iphone was amazing, it'd be a no-go for me.
3.) It doesn't matter what the people post at the Iphone boards. This isn't the Iphone board. Most people here don't visit Iphone boards because **gasp** they don't own an Iphone. With that, you tossing out how "they act" comes off pretty "holier than thou" and has a weird "stealth trolling" vibe to it, because it's irrelevant. At least when you hear most comparisons here, it's about specs and features... you're just grouping the users into categories based on a generalization of how you THINK they think/act, and calling one group better than another. Get that **** out of here.
Anyways, on topic:
It'd be nice if there were more out of the box features that really let android shine over the competition. I completely agree on this. Showing my friends all of the theming, power saving, and doodads is definitely downplayed when they ask about simple features like MMS and I my phone is taking 300 kb files and downgrading them to 17 kb.
I agree with the OP that it would help if the stock OS came dressed up more, just not to the point where you have features you can't change or that the OS becomes bloated. Maybe something like an OS wizard so you can choose how the GUI is set up and it downloads them as needed. With all the different ways to customize it you have to spend a lot of time researching, and you will still always find cool stuff you've missed before.
Also people forget that the iPhone is basically the Gold standard for smart phones right now, wether or not it really is a superior phone. Most everyone knows somebody who has one so it's just something easy to compare too.

Engadget: T-mobile G2 Review

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/06/t-mobile-g2-review/
now that its officially released, engadget got a good look at it. Pretty thorough review though there are some iphone comparisons. best of all "If you're looking for a top-tier Android player with little in the way of compromises, look no further. " oh and they scored it 8 out of 10. Hit the link for more!
Good post! Although I hate Engadget's obsession for Apple.
Reading now.
i think their cons are a bit weaksauce.
hinge issue is overinflated in my opinion (i have one that sorta does the "loose" thing but who holds their phone like that?)
also its bulky. duh. its got a keyboard. i think its actually quite slim for having a keyboard when compared to a nexus one, which i used previous.
though personally, i feel the bloatware(well kind of) which i can't remove is enough to drop it by two. i wish it was FULL stock froyo. no tethering restrictions and not an app for every service google ever created. though swype is a good addition.

When I hold my phone upside down my hinge just drops the screen... But it doesn't seem to be a problem because I don't hold the phone like that... No one does!
In my opinion the hinge seems fine and seems pretty strong... Doesn't move in my pocket despite the apparent lack of resistance.

Main reason I havent made the plunge.
One point, don't like the extra apps? Just hide them with LauncherPro until root is available...
The phone is great and solid and gorgeous but not without flaws. The "hinge issue" isn't really an issue, just a different approach to a slider and it's actually quite impressive since it enables the keyboard and screen to be even. I think people are just used to rigid sliders.
Also, The trackpad should wake up the phone because the power button is kind of annoying to try and reach. Leaving out the front facing camera doesn't affect me AT ALL because I think video chatting is lame and awkward (whether on AIM or a phone). How many people have really used Qik or Facetime more than a handful of times? But I do see why some people would be mad that the G2 lacks it.
Once this think gets rooted (*crosses fingers*) and we can enable wifi tether I will be totally happy. Free tethering definitely beats whatever paid tethering option T-Mobile is currently working on.
Call quality is great, and texting is superb compared to the iphone thanks to the keyboard. The only reason I'm still using my iPhone is for scrabble (Words With Friends) although according to the developer they will be coming to Android in a few months. In the mean time Wordfeud is a good alternative (s/n masaiandrews for both apps btw)
If you need a keyboard, get the G2 (or the Epic or Droid 2). If you want Android but don't want a keyboard, get the Evo or Incredible or Droid X. If you want more games, get an iPhone and jailbreak it immediately.
8/10.

Ok, so there's apps you don't want. It isn't like storage is an issue with this like it was on the G1.
Take them off your home screen, auto kill them for good measure and don't worry about it.

Exactly!
Whenever a media-review or forum-poster reviews a landscape-keyboard phone and says "it's hefty" or "it's thick" in comparison to the heft/thickness of a keyboardless phone it just makes them seem clueless.
It's fine to say you don't need/want a hardware keyboard or that it's not worth the size -- a lot of people don't need/want a keyboard, but it's still an apples/oranges comparison.
It's like saying: "The Lenovo Thinkpad is so much heavier and thicker than the Apple iPad!"
But really, the Engadget review is still very positive...and they actually minimize the hinge-looseness more than I do.

The problem is many of them always want to do something in the background. If I open the app and turn everything off (which I shouldn't even have to do), I don't want it to run at all. I shouldn't have to run yet another service just to keep a bunch of applications I will never use from running. If I could just set a switch to completely disable pre-installed apps, the G2 would be almost perfect.

Of all the bloatware, the only one that runs in the background is Finances (on my device). So out of sight, out of mind.
Like I said, it's better than nothing til root is here. I got sick of seeing the 15 or so apps I would never use that were preinstalled.
