The other day I was reading about Google voice being leaked from a G2 system dump in the android forum and I decided to give it a go. After installing, I launched the Google Voice app and then clicked the home button. I was prompted to choose which application to use: Sense UI or Launcher. I selected Launcher and it gave the default android home screen without any of the Sense UI extras, including the full 3D app menu. Not sure if anybody else tried this, but I wanted to share what I found.

EDIT:
I also installed the Gallery3DFroyo.apk from this thread:

I thought that was a feature of some custom ROMs. I could be wrong though. I'm running Skyraider 3.0 RC3 and this happens, although I set it to Sense as the default.

He didn't "disable" Sense. There's another launcher involved. Sense is still running in the background...maybe not accessible but it's still there.

You can make calls with the one in my roms.
We have been able to clear defaults on Rosie ever since Froyo came about.
Yeah there's also an app called clear defaults in the market which will just take you to the defaulted home and you just press clear default
Sent from my Incredible using tapatalk.
I'm running the Generic OTA of Froyo. I wasn't sure if it was known or not... or if it was anything special. I'm new to droid, I wasn't aware of the clear default app.

I am running a Sprint Hero with the Fresh ROM 1.1 with the Gumbo kernel.
When I am using the browser and I hit the home button a popup comes up and asks me which action with Home and Sense UI. I click the box that says make this the default action and click Sense. Its always happening?? How can I fix it?
Thanks

I cannot make it go away. Irritating.
Try reflashing whatever rom you're on.
Follow these steps to set the Android Home application as the default home screen rather than the HTC Sense UI.
1. Go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>HTC Sense.
2. Click on 'Clear Defaults'.
3. Now press the 'Home' button, and you'll get a window asking you to select an app to perform this function. Click on the check box to set an app as the default, and select 'Home'.
Now you'll use the default Android home screen and not HTC Sense. This will also enable you to select the wallpapers provided by the Android OS(including the blue landscape seen on HTC Magic\G1, etc). Just select the option so change the wallpaper, and you can select the Android Home gallery.
PS: You won't be able to use ANY of the HTC widgets now.
Enjoy...

You can Force Close it from the Manage Applications menu. That's the most I can do. I'm not a dev. So don't ask me hi-tech ways to stop it from running permanently.
Even with Sense running in the background the phone seems quite faster and I also prefer the default Android Home screen look.
Considering how Android handles running but inactive apps, I don't think Sense will use a lot of resources.

So it's basically the reverse of what you did to set Home as the default.
App called homesmack works.
Googled for a little while but couldn't find anything.
I would like to use the official 2.1 home app.
Does anyone know how to do this?
Thanks in advance
this is how it worked in 1.5, not sure if it does in 2.1 as i don't use it yet.
in 1.5 you could go to settings->applications and in the list of installed applications there also was "HTC Sense". if you looked at the details you could see that it was the default app for some actions and there was a button "delete default settings" or something like that. after that, when you hit the home button, you would get a question dialog asking if you want to use Launcher or HTC Sense for that action. you could also select to always use this setting there.
an alternative (also only tested by me in 1.5) could be the app "home switcher" that shows you all home apps installed and lets you select
hope that is helpful
I know, but this doesn't work anymore. I got used to sense now, but I'm getting really annoyed right now! It's just too SLOW
Using adw now quite pleased with that
can you share how you disabled Sense? i don't want to uninstall it completely
ok, i guess the htc didn't want users to switch to the default interface.
however, I attached the Launcher.apk from the emulator running 2.1, maybe it is possible to install it on hero as well.
hope it works!
So playing around I gigured out how to switch it:
Press Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Application
Press Menu > Filter > All
Scroll down to TwLauncher and tap that, then tap Clear Defaults
Press Home and you will be prompted to select Home (Vanilla Android) or or TwLauncher (Samsung TouchWiz). Check "Use by default for this action" to set Home as the default Launcher if you like.
If you ever want to undo the process, simply repeat the process but go to Home instead os TwLauncher.
Enjoy.
An easier way is to use the app "home switcher" from the market. Idk if it works with the epic but it should.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Once you install any different home launcher ADW or Launcherpro, etc it should automatically ask to switch home screens when you press home the first time.
I'm still looking forward to TouchWiz but more likely than not uninstalling it for ADW.
Wow! Nice job chris5h!

Hey Chris I have changed my os to Vanilla but when I try the reverse directions to go back to touchwiz it will not work. When I go into manage apps, then filter, then on to TwLauncher all is well, but then the option to press "clear defaults" is grayed out. Could you help out?

Definitely use Home Switcher. But yes, there's something with Froyo that makes it difficult to choose the "default" home. Unfortunately, if you select default on a launcher that you don't want, I would do what was mentioned above (variation of).
Go to market, search for Go Launcher, install it, uninstall, then you'll get the screen to pick your default launcher when you hit the home button.

Hey thanks this worked out, I kind of like Go Launchers interface though anyway.
But now I have the option to go back.
I guess I just kind of jumped into this quickly
I just rooted the phone and am not seeing many benefits to it so far,
I don't understand custom roms or kernals really either.
"launcher2.apk that's the aosp launcher"- I couldn't figure this out.
"I just delete the touchwiz launcher from any rom I use, then install LP,then delete th aosp launcher"
LP stands for Launcher program? aosp?
I still can't figure out how to get wireless tether through my epic!
Sorry guys, very new to this.
I picked this up on sale the other day. I like it but when I press the home button it takes be back to the default launcher screen, can't figure out how to fix that (I have used open home to make it default).

ADW Settings>General Behavior>Gestures>Home Button Binding
From there you can pick what you want the home button to do...hope this helps man..
Tried that but its not sticking... hmm thanks anyways
Ok now I see the problem. Using home switcher when selecting my default home app it is not keeping the adw launcher. For some reason it is reverting back to the stock android launcher.
Fix its, just cleared everything in manage apps...
A problem i have
I just installed ADW launcher on my tab and for whatever reason the damn "menu" icon won't go away on my homescreen. Its right next to the multitask button and it refuses to go away. I have seen many people who use adw not have this problem any ideas?

When you first installed adw and pushed the home button for the first time, you should have been given an option (pop up menu) to either go to the stock launcher or adw, and under those two options theres a checkbox to make it your default choice. You may have accidently checked it and went to the stock launcher.
I'd try going into settings/applications/all and find the stock launcher and if you select it than there should be an option to clear defaults for that app.

I know the last few updates for adw has had some issues so I'm not sure if this is one that people are complaining about.
But what I did was create a shortcut to show/hide the action bar.
Just long press the screen, than go to launcher actions and select hide/show action bar. I also replaced the icon with a transparent png so it's invisible on my screen.

I see what youre saying.
This must be something they added with the latest updates, but I can see why they did. If you use adw on a phone pressing the menu button brings up options for the launcher. These options are customizable by the way and actually come in handy. So maybe their just trying to make it more uniform to phone versions.
But I dont think theres any way you could get rid of it, adw is calling for the os to display the button, so unless theres a setting with in the app or unless you edit the apk youre stuck with it lol. The older versions like the one Im running now dont have this, so thats why you didnt see other users with the issue.

Solution.
I have been using ADW Launcher EX version 1.3.3.55 and I think this solution will work with other/older versions as well.
Search the Market for: Home Manager. Once you install and run this app it will give you the option to clear default then select the the default home you want. I've been using this myself and can assure you it works. I suppose it enables a service that ensures the default home settings 'stick'. Anyway once you're done and it works then you can disable the the status/notification bar option in the app as it doesn't need them running to function properly. Happy Home Skinning!
