Free Touchdown - Froyo - Droid X General

So... I'm on the leaked froyo and still can connect to my corporate email via the native app. I downloaded the demo of Touchdown and was able to connect no problem.
That said, I'm interested in taking Moto up on one of the free licenses they're handing out to those of us experiencing problem. However, they want a bunch of info emailed to them. I don't mind providing so long as they aren't able to use it to determine if I'm running custom (non-sactioned) ROMs.
So if they're wanting my phone number, HEX and DEC numbers... is that safe to provide if I like to run "custom" ROMs??

yes this is safe to provide, there's physically no way for them to know your running a custom rom from the info provided for your touchdown license key, which i have on my dx as well, and used the same way your probably using.

thanks gents!

where to email to Motorola to get the free Touchdown licence key?
what info they will be asking?
thanks!!!

Fed up, need working push email.

I'm fed up! I need a reliable push email service that works all the time, every time. I don't have the luxury of an Exchange Server, I did not get Live Mobile with my AT&T WM6 upgrade, nor can I get it to install after the fact.
Emoze only pushes on occassion, Seven pushes fine, but I can't reply to or send a new message.
What's next? I'll happily pay for good service. Any suggestions?
Thanx,

Maybe use a ROM with WLM etc already built in... then use hotmail or something...
I feel your pain. I'm the same way. I was just looking up solutions and wondering if emoze got any better since all the bad reviews.
I'm seriously considering the move to the BB Bold next month. The battery life on my hermes sucks with the push solutions. I just can't find any thing works nicely.

Perhaps you could recommend something, and point me in the right direction?
My experience with WM6 ROMS here at XDA is that they're all in a .rar format, and I've never been able to extract anything installable.
Your help would be most welcome.

Response from emoze
Hello all,
There are many builds of Windows Mobile out there, many of which are not endorsed or supported by the device vendors and/or providers.
Please understand that we cannot provide support for operating systems that are not officially approved and tested for specific hardware.
To summarise matters - If your WM ROM is from your provider/device vendor, emoze will work without a problem, and we can provide full support for it.

[Question] Using Android for Company Use?

Hi,
I am a system administrator for my company and i am considering switching from windows mobile devices to android devices in our company.
What i am looking for is people who use or have used there android with exchange.
This is mandatory in our company.
The phone needs to be able to sync Email, Contacts and Calendar with MS Exchange.
Are there people who can confirm that
- this works.
- what is your experience.
- Does is work like on a windows mobile device?
- Does it run smooth
- are there any complications.
- Is there anything that needs to be done server side (i assume not)
Any information would help.
Also i would like to know,
From the 3 android phones that are now available (g1, magic & hero)
Seeing that they are all HTC made, do they all have the htc exchange support implemented?
And if not, which ones don't support it, and is there an alternative solution for it?
Thank you in advanced.
Alex

Yes, this works. The HTC Exchange app "Work Mail" (mail.apk) allows for syncing of mail only. Complete Exchange sync support is available at this time via thrid party apps only. The best I've seen so far is Touchdown. A 5 day demo is available for testing. This solution is frowned upon by all my sysadmin pals because of two reasons... 1) added cost per end user and 2) its not native therefore you're relying on a third party for support. If they go under, your elegant solution is toast.
- what is your experience.
--> See above. Touchdown works well. Mail.apk gets the mail down but sync can be an issue and calendar, contacts and tasks is a NOGO.
- Does is work like on a windows mobile device?
--> Don't think I know what you're asking but... if you mean does it work like windows mobile's implementation of Outlook/Activesync then... not really. Sync is just like Activesync in that it polls your Exchange server periodically and checks for new items. See above for differences.
- Does it run smooth
--> Sure, though some have reported intermittent sync issues, I have not had that problem. Bear in mind pretty much everyone using Mail.apk is running some flavor of an experimental ROM.
- are there any complications.
-->typically, yes. See above
- Is there anything that needs to be done server side (i assume not)
-->no, no config changes are required to run either mail.apk or Touchdown

Mail.apk or Work Mail is a part of the ROMS for newer HTC devices, it is not intended to be used on the HTC Dream/G1 but has been ported over by kickass people to be used on the G1 and is included in newer modded roms like Cyanogens. I believe it first popped up in the Sapphire ROM, search here for in And.dev for the thread that clued me in to its existence.
So bear in mind, any solution you employ will either be entirely 3rd party or incomplete at this time. Also, the Dream/G1 is the only phone with a keyboard, I don't know about you but I wouldn't be composing emails with an onscreen keyboard.
Hope that helps and that I didn't misrepresent anything. If I got any of this wrong get in here and spank me good guys.

Thank you for your reply.
I assume that when i use the application Touchdown on the G1, that this will also work right?
On our mail server we enforce 2 things when connected to the exchange mail.
1. force password protection on the device
2. force encryption for files on device and SD card.
Do you have experience with this in combination with Touchdown?
Does it ignore it?
Will it enforce it?
Because i think we at least want password protection
(and then i mean that the entire phone cannot be used until the password has been typed. to protect all date on the phone.)
Just one additional point - the "work email" app DOES provide for full Exchange support (ie. contacts, calendar, email) on SOME ROMs. Any ROM that uses an HTC branded Magic ROM as its basis will have this, whereas Google branded ROMs do not (although they can run the application if one acquires it, in such case you'll get email only - most ROMs over on the development board bundle at least the email only version).
A good ROM to use for this is the Smartphone France ROM, which has full support, and is a moderately fast ROM.
I'm not sure about encryption and/or password protection for Exchange but certainly you can add passwords or even gesture based locking onto Android phones.
I personally found Touchdown to be complete and total gash, just couldn't get it to work at all well. Either it wouldn't sync at all, or it'd take ages for mails to appear, or you'd get a random subset of an inbox rather than a complete listing. However, most people who have used Touchdown seem to think my experience is in a minority.

Could you suggest one or more of those locking apps?
So if i understand correct.
The only way to not have to worry about which android phone people would like to use, and still have full exchange functionality is by using touchdown.
If i dont want to use that, then i need to get an android phone that is htc branded, or change the rom to a custom rom.
All Rogers and Hero ROM's have full exchange support NATIVE to the ROM.. do not go the Touchdown route.
As Android is increasingly supporting exchange, Touchdown will be less and less supported.
I am currently running Soulife's Rogers ROM and it handles exchange (email/contacts/calendar) totally native and works really well.
As for your company, it really depends on how many handsets you are supporting, and also depends on whether you really want to root and run different roms on all these devices as well.
I'd probably wait until an Android phone is released in your area that fully supports exchange natively.
There is no remote wipe for Android ... so if you are concerned about security or have to enforce password or locking policies then you should consider blackberry server ... I'm in the same boat as you, would like to use Android but the management tools are not there yet.
I have a magic flashed to jacHero, all aspects of exchange work fine, except one thing. When I try to change the date on a meeting invitation, I get a force close. I guess this is a problem with the ROM, as the stock Rogers ROM did not have this issue.
I have also tried touchdown, which works fine, and has tasks (which is a plus), but I prefer the native app.

i'm using an HTC ROM on my vodafone/Google branded magic (which does not sync with exchange by default) and the exchange sync works quite well. i get email, calendar and contacts.
one thing though, with regards to exchange contacts, there doesn't seem to be a way to browse the GAL.
in my case i have to click menu, then company directory. then i can type an entry into the search box.
it does feel a bit cumbersome, but i guess it's better than your phone trying to download several thousand GAL entries to your phone.
Do you need wi-fi?
If you need to use wi-fi in your company, and if you are using WPA-Enterprise (AD auth), keep in mind that android doesn't support it yet (at least out of the box).

Corporate lookup

Does anyone know of a free app that will do exchange corporate directory lookup? If these phones ever hope to gain ground in the corporate world they really need to have this functionality out of the box and built into the exchange app on the phone (i.e. being able to do a "check name" against the GAL). I've searched the marketplace but can't find one for 1.5. There is an app for the DROID that does this but it is either specifically written for the motorola phone, or only supports android 2.0 (doesn't show up as a search result unless it is done using the DROID). This is my biggest beef with this phone and i'm thinking of sending it back and just waiting for them to be released with 2.0 already loaded.
I know there are some paid programs out there that claim to offer this functionality but of course i'd prefer to explore the free route first. Thanks!
There is a beta program from Seven (also known as Good Messaging) that does what you are asking for at no cost (aside from testing new features).
http://www.seven.com
I've been using it off and on for a couple of years now. It perpetually has bugs (it's their beta build), but it works.
It supports direct connect from your phone via Exchange OWA, or you can install a connector on your PC at work which integrates with outlook to sync over the air with your phone (useful if your company only exposes exchange internally or via vpn).
How can I use this app from Seven? The link to Sprint links to other phones and not any of the newer smartphones...
*update*
Nevermind, I got it. Have to sign up for their forums and beta program. Installing now. Looks very professional. Let's hope it works well.
Finally I can answer a question for someone else. The Sprint Hero has a GAL built it. Unfortunately you have to be in an email to run it, but you can do a GAL from there. Let me know if you need help. No need to get an app, its already there.
When in an email, in the to box, type the name and a drop down will be there and select Company Directory
What about on the HTC Eris from Verizon? It does not have this drop down for corporate directory option.... Maybe I'll try that seven program.

I feel like a moron here, but I am not seeing this, I can start to type a name and I only get my list of contacts in the phone. This is not a GAL list. Would be OOBER cool if I can get this working, and figure out how to delete and email ONLY off the phone not the server too.

SMS and Exchange 2010

I've been using Exchange 2010 for a while now, all the way from beta, and one of the nicest things is it's 6.5 integration allowing you to send and view SMS's from the Outlook/OWA interfaces.
Problem is, it seems that HTC Messaging breaks this, I cant send any SMS's and they dont show up in the Outlook interfaces.
Anyone know how to get it working again? I know I can 'disable' HTC Messaging, and if needs must I'll do that, but it brings with it other issues if you do.
Anyone? there has to be a way?
Yes, yesterday I tried out to disable HTC-messaging, because SMS synching Exc2010 did not work.
And yes, after following all four steps, as described here, it did come back!
Downside so far is, you cannot write an SMS through the HTC-contact-app, so you'll have to use a different "new SMS" function, and you will not get threaded SMS view, just plain old classic view. But you still can view new SMSs in the HTC inbox of sense.
I can live with that
Yeah, that's what I used to do on the HD, however I've kinda got used to the new Messaging client on a device that can run it at least
I'll open a support case with HTC and see if they will acknowledge the problem, and see if they have an official fix. If not, it's the hassle of finding an ArcSoft that wont stuff things up as well, and back to TMail....
Just got this from HTC
At the moment this is not fully compatible. Please keep an eye on our website, I have noted the information on he new Exchange 2010 and we may indeed implement this in the future without having to hack the registry (please do not do this as it voids any Warranty and in some cases can brick the PDA). I cannot confirm if we will go ahead with this or not at the moment until I have more information.
Thank you.

I have to say a "fair play" to HTC re. this response - actually seems like someone who knows what they're talking about has looked at it (all be it probably briefly) which is a huge leap over the normal "have you tried resetting it sir?" response.
Obviously the ideal response would've been "yes we know, our guys are working on it as we speak, should be ready around Xmas time".. we can live and hope!
Probably wouldn't hurt for all of us interested in getting this working to drop them a line stating such and thus hopefully raising it up their priority list.. can someone please confirm an email address?
I've just used the standard HTC Support service through the website, I've posted a reply saying that it's a feature MS are Talking Up with the release of Exchange 2010 and WM6.5, as it is, and as it stands none of the HTC 6.5 phones will actualy work using the feature.
So let's hope...
I asked them to seriously look into it, as it's a Microsoft published feature that's being broken, and got this back seems someone at HTC (even if it is 1st line) has some common sense. Seems the Irish service center is a good one to target for problems
"Thank you for the feedback and suggestion Ashleigh, it would be a very good idea to include this feature in the future with new updates. I am going to see if this would be possible. I hope it is as I would use this as well."

Be nice to know if anyone has tried the new 1.66 firmware and tested Exchange. I am in Australia and as one carrier here is exclusive till end of March there will be no 1.66 for me for ages.
If it works. I will HSPL my device with the UK version but only if it fixes the issue. Then when warranty is needed I will tell them i had no choice as I wanted a default Windows Mobile feature back.
Unfortunately 1.66 doesn't fix this one
Just got my new SIM free HD2 and am having the same sort of problem when trying to Sync my texts via Exchange 2010.....have also contacted HTC support but guess I'll get the same answer i.e. we're looking into it.
Let's hope that enough people want to use the text sync feature and contact HTC so that they actualyl sort it.....ASAP?

I had consulted HTC a couple weeks back. Speaking to the service rep he mentioned that the developers didn't have access to an Exchange 2010 server. I found this rather odd.
Anyway as I run my OWN server I have offered to the service rep that they can have an account on my server if they wish to test with. He sounded very excited and I told him I would need time to setup an acount (and segregation from my clients). He even rang me back later that day to chase up the details. I had sent through all the info they need to for OWA and for Outlook via HTTP.
This was a couple weeks ago and early last week I received an email saying they are still working on the issue. So we will wait and see what happens.
Hey guys, any update on this?
This is a bit weird but... I have managed to get this to work fine, on 2 different ROM's so far (both Touch Pro 2's, one a T7373 and the other a T7378). To get it to work on my phone, I took my 3 SIM out, and put in an Optus SIM. On first sync, it worked. To get my mate's to work, we took his 3 SIM out, and put in an Exetel (uses Optus network) SIM. Same thing.
No idea how or why... but we all have SMS sync working properly now, can send and receive SMS via Outlook.
I've tried it yesterday and I've received a couple of SMS from the phone, but I can't send through Outlook, can send via Outlook OWA, but the messages never gets through and activesync on the phone takes 99% cpu and I have to reset the phone to get it to work again. It's frustrating.
You just send a message from Outlook and it goes to your phone via ActiveSync and sends correctly? Damn!
I've got a message from HTC support that it should work fine with the latest official ROM update, anybody can confirm?

Warning to Bell Galaxy S users regarding Froyo update

I just updated my Bell Galaxy S to the Froyo update Bell has waiting in KIES but has hidden from the public.
I quickly found out that anyone who is using exchange 2010 (and possible 2007) as an email server is going to be VERY unhappy. The security model needed for activesync to work properly with exchange 2010 is broken in JK3 and JK4 (the Bell Froyo builds). It seems that the model is there for full exchange security, but is broken and the phone will not let the server have access to things like password changing and remote wipe etc and thus the connection attempt during setup fails. There is a way around this, but if involves getting your exchange administrator to globally remove the default security policies in exchange (some say for a short time, some say permanently until the Android bug is fixed). Once the default security model is removed from the users Activesync profile then Android can connect and email can be set up.
Hopefully Bell realizes this as a major issue and this is why or at least one of the reasons why they have yet to release it to the public. Supposedly the issue has been fixed by the Android devs in current builds of 2.2.1 but whether or not this will trickle down to Bell's official release of Froyo for the Galaxy S is yet to be determined.
Needless to say, BEFORE YOU UPGRADE VERIFY THAT IT IS GOING TO WORK!
Another alternative is to pull /system/apps/Email.apk from the SDK (or various other locations on the web) and replace the one on your phone.
I've had to do this on mine and it's been working fine.
Originally, I used the "Improved Email" app from http://www.mwebster.us, but it's been having similar issues and the dev doesn't have time to fix it.. Too bad since it was THE best thing out there..

i'll say there's no need to panic yet, as it's not the final version for public use
that's why it's not accessible via KIES without the Registry Hack

As a software developer, I would say you should be worried. Unless they have completely different version they're waiting to upload, there's no way they're going to make any viable changes now to the firmware when they publicly announced Froyo will be available in mid December. If they want to change that, they will have to delay the release again. Probably to some time in January.

As far as I know, updating OS shouldn't take it into account whether the phone is locked or not, so I don't think you should have any problem.

Time wise that you are correct, if they do approve the current ROM as is, then it'll need to be manually patched later, or wait for the next ROM release.
the SDK work around is very sound and feasible for NON Standard users, people that don't even want to root their phone will be out of luck unfortunately
usually those kind of file swapping requires rooting.
I'm experiencing exact same issue now. There is no way I can benefit from my Exchange account with this Froyo release.
As soon as you have Exchange account with Synck ON + Auti-sync ON it kills th battery in 3-4 hours. Constantly high CPU + network traffic.
Having only Emails with pull interval option is not a good workaround as Exchange users mostly benefit from Calendar sync, and not only emails.
When Auto-sync is OFF calendar is not updated automatically.
Can someone put any instructions on how to replace email.apk? What version can we use on Froyo? is it from 2.1 ?

What Exchange version are you running? Do you have admin access? If you have 2010 I can help you get your phone syncing without needing to root it but it involves removing the default security policy for exchange so the server does not check if it has admin access to the phone during setup. If you have a large exchange organization then this probably isnt the best route for you. For me it was fine as it is my own personal server with minimal users/phones.
Does anyone know if the same flaw applies to hosted Exchange - microsoftonline exchange mail service?

It is large organization. And it is Exchange 2003.
I tried Touchdown today. It also has issues connecting and reports Too Many timeouts during one minute. But it has option to wait in case of such timeouts so it does not drain the battery. On other hand with such a wait Exchange is useless as I do not ger Push at all.
Is there any update on Exchange issue?
My phone behaves weird all those days.
I'm on JK4 and our Exchange 2003 just log error every second (it is Err 3005 Http code 400 in event log). The only way to keep my phone alive is to either disconnect from Exchange or turn off Background Data. Both leads to the same result - no sync.
I tried all email.apk available with exchange fix - no luck.
