OK guys, if you've been doing your research, you've probably heard of Jeff Sharkey, the guy who messed with SurfaceFlinger and found a cool little hack for the Nexus for some color filters. Anyway, here's the link: http://www.jsharkey.org/blog/2010/07/01/android-surfaceflinger-tricks-for-fun-and-profit/ https://review.source.android.com/#change,15613 (Second one is the source on Gerrit). Pretty cool, right? Now I've been looking around the Galaxy Forums, and unless I missed something, nobody has put it on this phone yet. I'm starting another of my soon-to-be famous think tanks to get the dev community inspired to make a cool little hack or kernel. So surprise me!
I want this just so I don't have to wear sunglasses to web-browse in bed.

No joke!! I'd like this option or even better a way to dim the screen even more than we are currently able to.
This is for the devs:
https://review.source.android.com/#change,15614
I have no idea what to do with the source code myself, soooo you devs have fun...
Though we do need SurfaceFlinger first, which I can't seem to find. Only search finds I get are what it does...
I already started a thread on this, but nobody seemed interested.
It's probably not that no one is interested in doing it, it's probably more due to the fact that our active devs are currently entrenched in trying to fix system critical problems (Lag, HSUPA, etc). Definitely keep this idea bumped though, I'm sure someone would be willing to take it on, and with readily available source it probably wouldn't be too difficult to port.
I am definitely interested in this. For reading this would be awesome I think, especially at night.

Best case for the money bar none. And yes, it does protect lens on bottom and screen up top depending on how you lay it.

It's just a cheap red rubberized case I bought on eBay for $6. I use it around the house. Don't really trust it if there's any chance I'll be out and about. I use an Innocase II when I'm carrying it around out of the house.

It doesn't provide much protection. Honestly, IMHO, it's more for looks than anything. The top edges of the phone look cool with the red.
does this brain your battery? curious if it makes battery worse than out of the box
Jury's still out on battery. Overnight results were not encouraging. I usually drop < 10% with the radios off, last night I dropped 30%. I'm going to swap setCPU for oc widget and lower the off screen rate to see what happens during the day.
I may turn off overclocking and use stock freq setting because what I'm mostly after is the better fps. I don't really care about the benchmarking in practical use because I don't game on it.

I believe it's Toast's GodMode kernel you'll find it on this very forum. It's pretty sad that the developers on this site have done a better job on this phone than HTC themselves heck they recently released an official patch update that bricked a user's phone. That's worse than Apple's you're holding it wrong campaign. Where the hell is the QC with these new devices quality control has gone down the drain.
It's not really a theme, I just cobbled together a few things I like from various places.
- Wallpaper came from the DroidX chocmatic posted in the Theme Playground thread.
- Lock Bar is BlackBarLockScreen-signed (sorry, I forgot who made it). This also installs transparent Rosie.
- Clock is Godzson's Black Gloss.
I think that covers most of the visual elements. All of this stuff is downloadable from XDA.

So what's the best kernel to breaking FPS limit if having Epson screen? I'm currently using GoDmode
There was only one previous question about this issue, but no replies!
I was thinking of something like the HTC deskclock but working as a typical screensaver, i.e. it runs when the screen is off.
Any suggestion?
Astro
I dont think many people would use this.. As it is, most smartphone users are looking to increase their battery life, and the single biggest battery drain is having the screen on. Ontop of that, Live Wallpapers, and in extension screensavers, tend to use battery power like mad since they are constantly re-drawing the graphics. Docks (like cradle and car docks) are only useful cause they are general plugged in when in use.
The only way I could see them being semi-useful, is if you set your backlight brightness to very dim which would save you most of the screen on power loss, but you'd still suffer from the constant redraw and processing power.
A screensaver is (and that is not my opinion but a fact) probably the most useless peace of software that can be running on a smartphone (for arguments see the previous post )
Thanks for the replies.
However, a low consumption dim clock would make a great addition to android phones and would be a useful tool for the ones using their phones as watches as I do. I never meant to ask for a flashy screensaver such as the ones you find on computers.

That's still going to use up your screen and CPU. As previous posters suggested, it is not recommended, unless you want your juice to run out before you even manage to come from work. However maybe 'Digital Clock' does something similar that you need?
I believe it IS possible! All you need is to set the screen refresh rate to 1/60 a second, make it go to minimal brightness, make the text cover as small area as possible, make it grey, dark grey, and add the refresh cycle to the cycle where it checks for some regularities, like cell signal.

You can't do that. At least not without modifying the kernel...

Very true indeed...
Screen is a bit too bright for me even on the lowest settting. I remember reading about an app that let's us knock the brightness below the minimum level, ideal for night reading by all accounts.
Can anyone tell me what this app is called? Does it need root?

i don't have this issue. i keep mine on about 40%
Once the devs start doing custom kernels, we'll get one that can go dimmer. Supercurio, the VooDoo lag-fix guy for the i9000 and other Galaxy S versions is big on color correction and gamma and all of that. One of his early fixes including making it less bright on minimum. He's looking to get a Nexus S, once he does we'll see lots of good stuff.
Meanwhile, even without one, he's chugging out lots of stuff for the NS community. Big fan of his work.
i'm looking through the samsung.git (the kernel source) in the android source, and came across some very interesting commits from Arve Hjønnevåg on this page
http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=kernel/samsung.git;a=shortlog;pg=1
click on the commit link for the details
they point out that the colours were actually wrong, and have now been reset. so, actually, all's good - so stop whining!
personally, i prefer the new colours!
looking through the commit logs is actually really interesting. a really annoying bug in googles where, if you pressed flash, it would turn itself off was fixed here: http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=ke...it;h=65799b8cfd15cb61201a0492d8d7799136c4d440
and the explanation is informative too!
What was the point of "fixing" the colors? It's not a bug.
The colors may have been "wrong" before 2.3.3 but that's how I saw it in the store and that's what it looked like when I bought it. If I saw it at the store with the 2.3.3 colors there's a good chance I would have purchased a different phone.
I prefer the "fixed" colors as well. I mean, would you buy a TV or monitor with inaccurate color representation?

things that are generally 'wrong' in software are bugs. your logic is wrong. let's face it, we didn't buy the phone for pretty colours.
and it's not a bug in android, it was a bug in the samsung crespo (nexus s) firmware that's been fixed. only users of the nexus s will see the colour changes. the samsung.git is the boot kernel code.

So are the colors now similar to the Epic or "washed out" as a couple of people have noticed.
I am going to store today to consider change from Epic. I love my phone, dont care as much about GB since it is rooted and rommed to 1.3, however
what I want is the size.
Just not sure about using my upgrade just for size since I know there will be newer, flashier things out, which I also don't know that I really need . .

The argument just stems from the fact that the original colours on the Nexus S were over-saturated and were not 'correct' by any definition of valid colour space. Those that accept that there is a 'correct' colour space are generally happy with the change, and so don't consider the colours washed out.
Those that prefer the incorrect colours and over-saturation consider the colours to now be washed out.
As for pros and cons of the Nexus S, check out the many other threads giving detailed reviews or 'compare and contrast' opinion pieces.
For me the biggest seller to getting a Nexus S was the fact that updates come straight from Google (previously was on Milestone and Motorola are crap at providing timely updates), closely followed by the speed and responsiveness of the phone in general.

you look the your screen 99% of the time you use the phone it plays a huge part in hardware decision for allot even its its colors
like someone said earlier its called bait and switch
and whats worst with this is that they are fixed with the exception of kernel with voodoo
Also i never seen once person complain before about the colors Google used prior to the update
BUT now that this "problem" was fixed i see tons of people complaining including me and then other just lay back and except it becasue Google said it was a good choice
also try owning a phone prior to this with OLED like i did with my nexus one and vibrant...even WP7 has accurate colors for and OLED panel.
Google is just made a stupid decision.

apples and oranges.
still, google and samsung even give you the complete source code for your phone, so, you can:
a) continue to whine and have it fall on deaf ears.
b) buckle up and modify the source code to your heart's content and hell, maybe even fix other problems.
c) use an existing solution.
whatever you choose, no one really cares, you're either happy, or if not, make the change.
so, start today.
make the change

It's not terrible for me. It's just the way our screen is.
Our screen was built for -> battery saving, that's why color reproduction has problems.
And for me the choice paid off, I am getting the best battery life than with any android smartphone.
If color reproduction was more important to you, you shouldn't have bought an Atrix.
Supposedly pentile screens also have advantages with sunlight visibility. My wife has an HTC Desire S, and it is literally unviewable in the Sun and yet mine remained completely usable and clear. She was not impressed and I was left gloating

but if we're on that wave, if you're well aware of the problem and searching only netted you no new answers, what did you expect asking would do? net you more non-new answers.
The Atrix screen indeed makes everything a little "bluer" (are your yellows slightly green?).
I read that in CM7 you can alter the color scheme a little bit, or there's an app that can also do this...I'd have to search a little bit to find what I'm talking about, but I'll post a link in just a sec.
Edit: this is what I was thinking of...Might not be exactly what you're looking for, as it requires you to have CM7 it looks like (not that that's a bad thing, but of course it's still in pre-beta and you might not want to use it). It's a start though, and gives you a little more info.
