I was watching a YouTube vid and someone said that you do not need to root the Magic in order to put the Hero Rom on the phone.
I just got my unlocked (AT&T) Rogers Magic and I was wondering if this is indeed correct?
I wonder that to, please someone give us an answer

It is my understanding that it is the rom that is rooted. Not the device.
So if you flash a Hero rom that has been rooted then you will have root. If you flash a rom (such as the original you should have backed up will nandroid) that hasn't been rooted then you will not have root.
Hope that helps
P.s some one correct me if I am wrong, that is how it has worked for me.
A better question would be why wouldn't you want to root? No, really. If your going through the trouble of flashing why not root? If you don't you can't get paid apps on the Rogers Magic, not sure on other brands but the Rogers phone does not allow paid apps stock. I had to root and install market enabler to buy apps. It just makes sense if our going that far anyway.

Good point. I went ahead and attempted to root, but at the point where I'm at fastboot mode and "fastboot boot recovery.img" instead of just saying "downloading" it just says "waiting for device". Any thoughts about what that means? The update.zip is on my sd card and the image is in my tools directory.
Are you sure your usb drivers installed properly? What OS are you running? If it's XP some people have had trouble getting the drivers to play nice, I didn't have any problems but some have. Here's the guide I used, about as easy as it gets. Just make sure the first steps work before moving on is about all i can say I'm brand new to this as well. Hope that helps you some.

Newb question
Hi.
I'm winmo user. Planning to buy HTC Magic next week. So i'm now advance reading topics about Android, HTC Magic in particular.
My questions are, 1) what is ROOT? and 2) how to install apps? I've seen files with .apk extension.
Thanks in advance.

Rooting is pretty much the equivalent of "jailbreaking" an ipod touch. It alows you to gain access that wouldn't otherwise be available from the vanilla google os. (ie tethering, running and storing apps from sd card, moving various caches from the browser and other apps to the sd to save space...etc)
What do you mean about installing apps? There is an app store the "android market" where you can search from many apps and just seamlessly install them to your phone (or sd card if you root).
Just a quickie..
Wondered if you could get apps like setcpu to work on non rooted phones? Dont really want to root my phone if possible!
(Silly but) Would i still get OTA Updates if i rooted?
Not had much success in the way of phones lol just want setcpu so my phone will run at its fastest.
Please post in right forum next time.

Hey I'm new here, but in my experience, no you need to be rooted for apps such as setcpu, and no, you wont get OTA updates if you aren't running the stock rom.
However, if you make a nandroid backup before you wipe your phone, you can always go back to your stock ROM. I've switched back and forth several times successfully.

OTA updates don't seem to work if you have rooted. They download and fail to install, repeatedly, causing massive amounts of downloads on your Magic!
I can't think you would be able to run setcpu without root ... I assume it must be adjusting settings in /proc which would be protected to stop accidental damage/crashes etc.
Guys,
Thanks for the help in fixing my camera issues !!
My next question is, am I still rooted once I updated to 2.2 ?? The Market doesnt seem as extensive as it was when I was rooted on 2.1
I am pretty new at all this stuff, how can you tell if your rooted on 2.2, and if I'm not, how can I properly root it again ??

root and Market are not related. You need to change your phone fingerprint to the Nexus 1 to show all the protected applications again as Google does not recognize the DK28 fingerprint.
However, you need to be rooted to edit the file. See the following thread for the fingerprint. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848778

One way to check is to open up a terminal and type "su"
To get root back, use the one click installer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388
Or flash a Tom to get all the apps. If you want to find out if your rooted just download titanium from the market. As soon as you open it it will say asking for root rights.

ok, here comes the idiot question of the night....
is there any way to root my phone, without having to use a computer to download any files ??
When my friend originally rooted my phone when I was on 2.1, he didnt have to use a computer, he was able to do it right on the phone itself (not sure what he did, tbh)

To tell if you're rooted - install an app like Titanium Backup, which needs root to function properly. If you're not rooted, there won't be access to the market.
For root if you've lost it, your best option may be to install a custom ROM, which are usually pre-rooted. Besides, most custom ROMS are better than what comes stock. Which custom ROM will depend on your needs.
I'm new to the Android experience and I'm loving it so far. But I wanted to ask about ROM's. I understand they're a modified version of the android OS (no?). What I wanted to is that if you needed an external storage to install a ROM on your phone. If so whats the minimum size? Also does adeo work with 4.1.57? or are we still waiting for a developer to release an update?
Thanks for any sort of help you can can give me =)
you do not need any extra space, it replaces the existing software/build.
However, the likelyhood that you will see any true ROMs for this phone are close to zero. The real thing to realize is that you really don't need them. Unless you like modding your phone for fun, or overclocking, or whatever it isn't needed. You can mod a lot of stuff with just root, and honestly most of the stuff people want, can be done without whole new ROMs.
as far as adeo, no idea, check the thread on it. Never touched it myself.
I'm trying to get GingerBlur on my phone, apparantly I am required to have adeo for that.

Why do people think that? You do NOT need Adeo for Gingerblur. How did your get that idea????

Adeo and gingerblur do not work on 1.57 there is a way to deodex 1.57 and I think they're working on or already have the recovery/reboot options available for 1.57 also I believe Ken is working on gingerblur to work on 1.57 as far as ROMs with the CWM there might be ROM development in the near future using the current kernel

GingerBlur 1.1 works on 1.5.7. However, you need the bootstrap recovery apk from the Android Dev section. The Gingerblur installer auto-deodexes your phone. However, you need an SD card to put GingerBlur on
This phone doesn't need all of the ROMs people want. It's a super fast phone, even without overclocking. My other two phones, the Captivate and Inspire, needs to be modded to function well. Says a lot about the quality of the devices
The true ROMs (Cyanogen, Cognition, Serendipity, whatever else there is) might never, ever be usable on this phone. This device has a signed bootloader, and we can't install custom kernels while it is signed. One of the only ways we might get around this is if Motorola pulls their heads out of their asses.

Is there any threads that go over how to install bootstrap recovery? How large does my SD card need to be?

I would recommend at least 4 GB. Anything less will probably get filled up quite quickly. I bought mine from buy.com for an extremely cheap price. Hell, you can get a 16GB for ~$20 on Newegg.
This is the link to the CWM recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019143
You need to have sideloading enabled. That isn't hard, just follow this second link to root and update to 1.5.7 correctly.
You need to be rooted, and at 1.5.7. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016060
This is a guide to getting root on the newest update. This is the direction you must use:
1.2.6 SBF Flash -> Root 1.2.6 (using retainroot from the second link) -> update your phone OTA with 1.5.7 -> run the afterupdate.bat from retainroot -> install CWM recovery -> put GingerBlur.zip on SD card -> boot into CWM recovery and install zip from SD card.
It seems complicated, but you'll get used to it.
This si the micro sd card I purchased: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ..._re=16gb_micro_sd_card-_-20-211-379-_-Product
It's a Class 6 - 16GB, for only $28. It's almost criminal not to buy it! Mine works great so far
Basically I want the phone to go back to the "welcome to android" page at the start WITHOUT losing root. Do i just do a factory reset? Will this get rid of root? Does it get rid of CWM?
I have accounts and stuff that i'd rather get rid of myself so the new owner doesn't have to hassle.
Thanks in advance guys, I want the new owner to start fresh, but keep root in case he wants to start adding roms himself.
EDIT: Can I just do a backup, flash a stock rom, see if it works then delete the backup? this way it is technically a "fresh start" but without any of my accounts, right?
if you are running a rooted rom you can factory reset without losing root
Well right now im running the stock rom but the phone is rooted, does that make a difference?
i rooted my fone a few months ago and all of a sudden it says s-on and it wont let me unroot. wat can i do??
Can anyone chime in? I'm selling the phone in a few hours and I still have my main account synced to the phone, will restoring to factory from the factory rom UNroot the phone? I don't want this to happen. What are my options?
I would just reflash the ROM your using and clear your SD card of personal things. I just did this with my HD2 running Android and it worked great.

Did you do an OS update? If you dont have root anymore why dont you just go back to the start and try your luck again?

The problem is i'm running the stock vanilla froyo rom that came with the phone. I dont have a backup that doesn't already have my main gmail account already synced to the phone.
Should I just download another stock vanilla original OEM 2.2 rom and flash over this one? then delete any backups of my old rom (the original)?
Forget about stock, just download CM7 and flash it

Thats not a bad idea, does netflix work with cm7?
Also I was having problems with a few 2.3.3 roms making my usb transfer incredibly slow, the only roms that didn't do that were virtous (sense) and stock froyo... I dont want to sell the phone with a rom that makes the usb port un-usable...
Edit: Forgive all the questions, usually I would do my research but this is super last minute, all I want is for the phone to be stock without my gmail account synced and still rooted so that the new owner can choose roms as he likes.
You know, I couldnt say about netflix. I was running meXdroid and netflix was fine. I flashed CM7.1 RC yesterday and can not seem to login. Reading comments in the CM7 thread it seems netflix is hit or miss. I have never had issues with USB so can not say either way. Why dont you visit the CM7 thread and read some of the comments.
Thanks a lot for the help. I went with just flashing another stock OEM ROM from THIS thread, and so far so good, I got the ODEX version just because I want to make sure that Netflix works, as it is one of my prime selling points. Not very many android phones can play Netflix, and im certainly going to miss that, aswell as the keyboard.
I deleted all of my old backups, so none of my gmail accounts should be on the phone anymore.
I hope this thread helps someone who is trying to do the same thing, its definitely tricky.
In the end I played it safe, but there are certainly many options out there. Thanks for all the help everyone who replied.
