The camera is so incredibly bad that sometimes I actually carry around my Blackstone without a sim card just to use the camera because I don't want to use the Hero's camera. They're both 5 mp but I think the problem is that the Hero doesn't have a stabilizer so everything comes out blurrier, and it's impossible to take closeups. I've tried it with both the default camera app and Camera Magic and they are both terrible. Anyone know if there's a way to fix this or if it's just a useless camera?
Same Problem with me. I'm using Villian Rom 2.1. Camera is very blurry
The shutter speed on the Hero is quite slow so you have to be very steady when you press the trackball. And it will help a lot if you only press the trackball when the autofocus brackets are green, which means it's focused properly. A lot of people just press the trackball without waiting for the auto focus brackets to turn green and then blame the cam for taking blurry pics.
Personally I think the Hero cam is pretty decent, my shots are mostly sharp and in focus as I do take my time to take pics. Having said that, it's definitely useless for taking action shots or night shots.
It's only happenned on 2.1 Rom. The picture taken is full of yellow and bad quality compare to Magic, back to 1.5 is fine.
The biggest problem with the camera for me is the length of time it takes to capture a shot.
It's basically pointless trying to take a photo of anything that is moving at all.
I don't know if HTC generally have a problem making cameras work but my old TyTNII had the same problem.
Really I don't see the point of putting a camera in a phone if you're not going to make it work properly.
Things also look better if you change the metering mode to average.
I've found the Hero's camera to be ridiculously dark in comparison to even the Dream. It's just borderline unusable, IMO.
On my HTC Touch Pro 2, the camera was amazing, 3.2mp i think with flash, very clear picture. I was all excited to try the 5mp from the Hero, geesh it realllly suck
Sorry if this topic has already been brought up but has anyone thought about the ability to improve our camera and camera recording quality?
I mean the camera is pretty good and takes decent pictures and also records pretty ok, but there's always room for improvement
Maybe some codecs swaps here and there or increasing the jpeg compression or something. I'm no expert in these areas but I thought it may be something for the skilled dev's to be interested in and of course we all can be test bunnies.
Hope alot of you get into this, let's make the most of out glorius Acer Iconia! And put other tabs to shame! Hear Hear!
I was trying to do some pictures and the camera is out of focus.
When you press the shutter icon the camera is doing the focus, you can see that is passing through a position where the picture is really sharp and crispy but unfortunately isc not stopping there.
I was trying different applications from the market without success.
Looks that is a software problem.
Do not forget that Acer has not too much experience with digital photography.
In comparison the photos taken with my Omnia 2 phone (also a 5M camera if I remember corectly) are super duper.
Let's hope that Acer will correct this issue in the next updates/upgrades
Same results, must be a software issue, shutter activation not synched with focus lock properly resulting in blurry, soft images.
I didnt think of that at all but yes its true.
But the next update is for Honeycomb Android UI only 3.0 to 3.1
But there must be someone that be creative about this and create a modd of some kind.
There is definately a software issue here, try this............
Take a shot on autofocus and then change focus setting to infinity and take the same shot.
On auto, the shot will be blurry, on infinity it will be sharp.
Dont think this is a HC issue, something Acer has to fix.
Not sure if you guys know this or not, but you need to hold the button until it focuses completely. If you just tap the button it will take a blurry pic. It was pissing me off to no end until I relized that lol.
Great find! I didn't know this.
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
I hold the button, and it'll do its focus thing, but it still goes past being clear and in focus and to blurry. Its definitely a software Issue I feel. It CAN focus and I see it in focus, but it goes right back to being blurry before I unpress the button. :-\
Is matter of camera driver I think, I've tried with other free apps from the market but no improvments.
I did not bought FXCamera, only in pay version is supporting 5M camera so I can not be 100% sure that is the camera driver or Acer camera app.
Did anybody used the FXCamera full version?

My point exactly its acer that has to fix the camera.
Thanks for the infinity thing, spread the Acer minions!
I was very frustrated with my A500's camera until I read heathen's post. Thanks! I hadn't thought of holding the button down, but when I do it definitely autofocuses to a sharp image. Then I release the button and get a perfect shot. I'm using Android 3.2 so perhaps Acer did do some kind of fix. As others noted, the shutter still fires before the camera has focussed if I simply press the button and release. (Is this a feature or a bug? ) What's the point of having the button operate in 2 modes?

This hold and focus feature is also on my android phone android 2.2.so its the same.my Iconia takes great pictures.just holding still is the key.
Videos are not so good.
But i have a awesome Nikon digital camera for real pics.
Under 3.01 and 3.1 when you held down the shutter there was a beep when focus locked. This does not seem to happen under 3.2 but it seems that you don't have to hold down the shutter any more, and I get proper focus with a simple shutter press.
I was curious about the camera image quality of the shift. My pictures always turn out very noisy and washed out. I have read around and found the same complaints but no answers on improvement. My 1.5mp first gen Sony camera takes a better picture. I have the exact same issues on the stock HTC, other sense roms and CM7 nightly. The quality of the image changes very little. I am looking to get a decently clear picture. I do not expect perfection from a cell phone but when I see the 100% full size picture it's really bad even in on a perfect sunny day. I see the improve image patch that I have not downloaded yet. Is there a camera app that will take a better image ? Is the kernel code for the camera a possibly culprit ?
I know there are a lot of programs like camera 360 but that's not exactly want I am looking for.
It's a little disappointing to have a 5mp camera that is not very good. I could deal with a little washed out color but all the pixelation is what I don't like at the full 5mp resolution when on my computer. Thanks for any responses and help in advance

i was wrong for motorola phone boo !
Are you sure you set the image quality to 5 mp first? I own a really nice 16 mp canon camera, and the shift with 5 mp takes far better pictures, even in bad lighting.
Then again, I rarely take photos, I take videos then remove the frames I want as photos, ensures I always get the picture I want.
yes, it is set at 5mp. I have tried lower ISO and all the tricks but it isn't still blurry and lots of pixelation.

My shift takes pretty good images...in the right conditions.
Low light conditions almost always produce ruinous pictures. The picture displays huge amounts of noise in these cases. Flash is generally not helpful.
Choosing the ISO manually shows improvement, and I personally prefer the Touch focus mode. When shooting outdoors in daylight, I usually get very nice pictures, particularly if I shoot in 5MP and then downsize them.

How To Take Better Photos on Your Android Phone
The cameras keep getting higher in resolution, but there's more to getting good shots than the hardware.
By Ryan Whitwam
| June 14, 2010
.It's become common for even mid-range Android phones to come with some impressive cameras. A five megapixel sensor is usually present in most smartphones, and that means you can get some pretty reasonable point-and-shoot type images. A phone's camera may not be replacing your dedicated camera anytime soon, but you have to work with what you have. If all you have with you is a phone, you might as well maximize the image quality. Android has made some strides in the image capture department in the 2.1 and upcoming 2.2 updates.
Read on as we tell you how to get the most out of your Android phone's camera. The app that comes with the phone is the one most people will inevitably use, but we'll also tell you which third-party apps can add useful functionality.
Zooming[/B
]Zooming is something we've all become accustomed to on real cameras. A standalone camera most likely has optical zoom. This enlarges an image by using movable lens elements to vary the focal length. With optical zoom, quality is not lost. With the digital zoom used in phones, you are basically cropping out pixels at the edge and blowing up what's left. The result is a poorer quality image. We recommend not zooming in if at all possible, since you can always crop an image after the fact using desktop software. The only time you should use your camera's zoom is when you have to send that photo off on the phone without any post-cropping.
Stock Android phones running on 2.1 and earlier have access to zoom controls in the form of plus/minus buttons on the screen, but it only moves in steps. In 2.2 Google is adding a zoom slider to the on-screen controls. Camera Pro and Camera Zoom FX can add that functionality now for a few bucks. Sense UI phones have long had access to digital zoom in the camera app. The ease of use depends on the underlying Android software version. On Android 2.1 builds of Sense, users are presented with a large friendly scroll wheel to adjust the zoom.
The zoom option is there if you need it, but we suggest only using it when you have to. Even then, zoom only as much as you have to. Each step you zoom means fewer pixels in the final image. The small images sensors on these phones tend to have more noise than standard cameras, and the more you zoom, the more noticeable that will be.
Flash
Next, you need to keep track of your flash settings. Cell phones use LED flashes, which are nice as they don't use very much power. However, they tend to light a subject more harshly than a more natural-looking Xenon flash on a real camera might (this happens even at a distance).
It's always a good idea to turn the flash off when you don't need it. The stock Android camera app has a tendency to overuse the flash when it is set on auto. If you take a picture in medium light and the flash goes off unexpectedly, try it again with the flash off. We often find the resulting image to be preferable to the one with the flash.
Focusing
What's the good of taking a photo if it isn't going to be in focus? Android phones made early use of autofocus cameras and that means better images. Phones with hardware camera buttons sometimes employ a two-step mechanism like a real camera. That means you can depress the button halfway to focus, then recompose and press it the rest of the way to capture the image. This is helpful in that it can allow you to change up the framing without capturing an image if the focus doesn't look right.
On a phone like the Nexus One without a hardware shutter button, you can get similar functionality. When you press the on-screen shutter button, you can hold your finger there to inspect the focus. If you don't like it, just slide your finger off without removing it from the screen. This will let you try again without taking the image. Similarly, if using a trackball/trackpad as the shutter, depress to focus, and if you wish to abandon the image you can tap the screen.
Sense UI phones have a different trick up their sleeve when it comes to focusing. These phones have tap to focus, a feature we originally saw in the iPhone 3GS. You can tap anywhere in the frame to have the camera autofocus for that spot. This is functionality we have not yet been able to replicate on stock Android phones through apps.
Image size
The next thing to be aware of is what type of image quality you need. The default setting on most phones is maximum quality. That's fine if you intend to take important images to keep. But if you're just taking a snapshot to email to a friend, or send in an MMS, you don't need the highest resolution image.
A full resolution image from an 8MP camera like that in the Incredible or EVO 4G could be well over 1MB. If you're on a non-unlimited data plan, sending a large image via MMS may not be a viable option at all. All the stock apps, as well as third-party camera apps will allow you to change the resolution of the image being captured.
This is also a good idea if you need to take several photos in quick succession. Android can be a little slow to write images to the SD card and prepare for the next shot. By reducing the overall image size, you can get more shots in. This functionality is available from the onscreen controls of all the stock apps. Some third party apps hide this functionality in the settings menu.
Fine tuning
These camera phones are getting closer and closer to being the real thing, as evidenced by the plethora of image effects they can use. Stock Android 2.2 (and Sense UI) and higher phones can take advantage of different exposure settings. The exposure is just the amount of light allowed to hit the image sensor. This can be used to compensate for conditions that are too light or dark, bringing out detail. If you need a flash, but it makes the image a little too bright (common with LED flashes), you can try again with a lower exposure. Change the exposure around while composing a shot. The Android camera will change the preview to approximate chosen exposure. Stock Android 2.1 is unable to alter these values, so you'll have to wait for the 2.2 update.
You can also get better color representation by changing the white balance. The auto setting is usually fine, but we've found Android phones can get confused, especially in low light. This often leaves us with warm, almost orange pictures. If your phone is taking images that look to warm or cold, try setting the white balance to the type of light you're shooting under. You have options like incandescent, daylight, fluorescent, and cloudy.
Sense UI phones (even on 2.1) have all these tweaks and more. HTC has added a number of options to their Android interface that doesn't exist for stock phones. There is an option to change metering mode to spot, center, or average. This controls how the phone samples to determine how to expose the shot. This can be helpful if your subject is lighted differently from the rest of the shot. We find this useful for times when we're taking a backlit shot.
Sense UI also builds in ISO settings. ISO is basically how sensitive the image sensor is to light. A higher ISO will allow you to capture motion better, but the image will be grainier. The sensors on phones tend to handle motion pretty poorly, so this is a nice addition on HTC's part. We haven't found any apps that allow stock Android to do any of this either. Camera 360 is a new app with some fun filters, and it offers an ISO option, but we found it did not work on stock Android 2.1 or 2.2. It seems HTC rolled their own code for this.
With a little thought, you can capture completely respectable images with your Android phone. We feel that the most important first step is setting up the shot correctly. You have to evaluate if you need the flash on or not, and if you can avoid zooming. Make sure to examine the preview after your handset focuses before you take the image. In our experience, the stock apps that come with your phone will do nearly everything you need.
Most of the third party apps don't add much functionality beyond some effect filters. The only exception may be timer and timer and burst mode, which you can get from an app like Camera Zoom FX. Sense phones, of course, have this built in. Do you have any camera tips for Android? Any apps you've found that bring something meaningful to the experience?
Thanks this helps

I don't get it, every single picture I take is blurry and very noisy no matter what. You can not tell until you see the full resolution size 2592x1936. I don't need to save all pictures this size but I do a lot of cycling events that I would like to take good pictures at. My hope was to be able to have some nice larger photos to print . It would save me from buying a DC. I have noticed that older pictures before my rom flash are the same way.
The camera on my 3yr old crappy ATT samsung took clear pictures. Some were a little noisy because of lighting but not near as bad as this .
I am starting to wonder if my sensor is defective or my lens is scratched . I would attach a picture but the restrictions here would not allow it. Thanks for the help again. I guess I am SOL
What Rom are you on?
I have another camera related question. I have the CM7 nightly, my camera always freezed when I am waiting for a next shoot for too long, I have to take out the battery to reboot. Can anyone give some advices.
I am using cm7 nightlies. I have tried all roms with the sane results . As for the other question, did u format data, system, cache and dalvik cache( spelling) ?

I honestly can't figure out which is better for the life of me.
Stock camera is awesome. But if only I am taking photos with shutter button. On screen button makes the camera focus again after initially locking focus with touch, although it remembers where to focus.
This may cause some lost moments due to delay in shutter speed.
Now, Google Camera, on the other hand, takes photos instantaneously. Much faster than stock camera from my observation. Lock focus with touch, then either on-screen or shutter button takes photos instantly. This makes me a very happy photographer.
But this might mean that I am losing out on Sony-powered enhancements they made for the stock camera, so I am doing various of tests to see which camera is superior.
As for now, both camera takes exceptional photos, but I can noticing differences in color, where Stock makes colors colder where Google makes it bit warmer.
Which camera do you guys prefer?

For me stock all the way. I had a phone with very Shutter speed without focus before. Problem was half of my pictures came out blurry. I'd rather wait a milisec for the focus and have a sharp picture than hammering that button and hope for the best plus for me it's always really hard to keep the cam steady when pressing the touch button. As I said half my pictures came out blurry and out of focus with my sgs3. With the z3 every picture is perfect so far. Never had so much fun with a smartphone camera. And that because of the ergonomics and not because of megapixlz.
But why not have both apps side by side and use the one better suited for the situation?

Galaxy phones are the same i guess. I have an s5, previously moto x and iphone 5 user. Never had blur in my photos, but with galaxy s5 out of 10 i take 7 will be blurry but camera quality is really good if its not blurry on the s5 especially day light
Speaking of cameras, can you turn off the shutter sound in either of these camera apps?
I could turn it off on my old xperia acro s, but apparently Sony has decided this feature was too powerful for the z3 compact.

Haha ok. Sometimes it's hard to figure tone on the internet. :silly:
Last time I tried the Google Camera it didn't like the 2 stage shutter. I think Sony did a decent number on the Camera app, so will be using it for the time being.
I am also using the default camera app. Its awesome!
I think the google camera needs a overhaul. Its good for just point and shoot but it lacks features. Lets hope Android L apis can help with this.
I figure I'll keep the stock camera as well as Google camera installed for different purposes. Stock camera for everything else, and Google camera for panoramas and photo spheres. Have not compared the difference in panorama shots between stock and google camera yet though.
I found google camera to be worse in low light situations. However the app Camera jb+, gave me better results allround compared to the stock camera.

Crazy...then I'd think its based on what country's firmware is installed...I'm from Germany and some users report (on older Sony xperia z's) that they can't disable the shutter sound.
What coutry are you from? Is there a way to get the camera app from another software? I heard there are also complications with DRM

Sweden :good:
Maybe with the google camera app you can switch off the sound
The DRM complications might relate to unlock/root where some lowlight functions get lost for good - but if rooting/unlocking isn't a matter of life and death I wouldn't do it until a safe method is found.
I'm from germany (german stock .77 ROM, no branding etc.) and I have this option.
I'm a Google camera fanboy now. The stock app isn't consistent enough and too much time consuming. I like simplicity above the ultimate shot. Also like the photosphere ability. This way I can relive the moment in VR.
G2 D800 running CM13 nightly
On stock, the camera app when I am taking a picture and press the shutter button, the app will focus before taking the picture. This normally takes about a second, but gives me much clearer pictures
With any other rom, Bliss, CM13, DirtyUnicorn, etc. the app takes the picture immediately after pressing the shutter button. So I must wait until the picture is fully focused before pressing the shutter button.
This also hurts me because I regularly move the phone slightly when I press the button so pictures almost always comes out blurry unless I am super careful to just barely touch the screen. This is much more difficult to get a decent picture VS the stock camera app.
I can't tell a difference between stock and CM13 camera quality as long as I hold the camera extremely still
Does anyone have any suggestions on options to have the CM13 camera app focus before taking the picture?
The guys from CyanogenMod would say (and I bet there's a disclaimer in the CM13 Nightly thread): "Deal with it. You're using a damn Nightly Build. Don't expect everthing runs properly!"
Why don't you run stable CM13 instead of the nightly version? You wrote the focus runs properly on it.
At last nightlies are naturally meant to be TEST-versions to sort out stuff like this focus problem. If you stick with nightlies just wait for the next nightly. They may fix it with the next build.

Focus does not work as I would like on stable CM13
Stock = Stock from LG not CM13 stable. Focus works as I would like on stock LG firmware, yet I cannot run marshmallow and new features with it.
I have always experienced this issue with stable/snapshot/nightly CM13 camera. I do consider more of a usability tweak than an actual bug as some people may prefer to take the picture as soon as they press shutter. It would be nice to have an option to focus first then capture or capture immediately.
I have always had this issue with any snapshot/nightly I have run that is CM based. I was hoping people had possibly another camera app they liked.

Have used cm13 nightly week ago, found no problem of such as you mentioned. If you want something to stick to, always use stable version.

I have not tried the most recent nightlies as last I looked they were having some issue with adreno blobs. I will check if they have that sorted by now. I think it is more the camera app than any issue with the OS since I have the same problem across many CM based roms. I was hoping people had possibly another camera app they liked.

The snapdragon camera that is built in cm13 is by far the best that worked for me.
But if you want, you can try xdadebb's xcam : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2548974
