Widgets stop working randomly, help anyone? - XPERIA X10 General

Hey guys,
I've been having a minor problem with my phone lately; widgets stop working randomly. This happens from time to time but lately its starting to happen a lot more often and its getting really annoying. I only have four widgets running on my screen and yet my phone still manages to screw up lol. I have Beautiful widgets, Gauge Battery widget, Xperia Flashlight and Google Search. I'm on an older version cuz I can't be bothered to root my phone again, my current version is R2BA023. I've searched the whole forum for the same type of problem but couldn't find any. When it stops working, the widgets would still be on display but it won't change anything. Like for example the digital clock from Beautiful widgets would just display the time before it stops working, same with Gauge battery. It's annoying cuz sometimes I don't realize the time until I double check it with a watch or something. Does anyone have the same problem? can anyone help? Thanks in advance

I feel quite daft saying it cos I'm sure you have checked it.... you've not got a task killer running? If you have received an update on it your ignore list may have changed.

Junk, are you using adw? Xperia flashlight widget dies every time I restart my phone with adw. I have to remove and re-add for it to work again.

@suzed: Nope, I don't use any task killer whatsoever cuz I don't think it does anything. I've tested my phone and when I had ATK, my battery drains a little faster. And it screws with a lot of my apps as well
@AdamUpNorth: Yes, I'm using ADW Launcher but my Xperia Flashlight works fine. I think I had the same problem when I had Advance Task Killer but when I uninstalled it, the widget works fine. But lately my ADW crashes often though, I don't know why either I still can't figure out why my widget stops working randomly. Maybe I'll try and switch to a different launcher...

Make sure you have the newest version of ADW, mine kept crashing a lot before I updated.
Same with Beautiful Widgets. I use Weather and Toggle Widget, and the clock used to stop all the time, but with the latest update, it seems to be running fine.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know that ADW Launcher doesn't update itself automatically or it's just me. But I've tried updating it to the latest version, I was on 0.8.9 and I assume that was a while back ago. I'm having no problems since the update so I hope that fixed it. Thanks for the help guys

There are no applications that update automatically. They require manual updates through the Android Market. Android 2.2 makes it a little faster to update, but that's about all.

You only get the notification that updates are available if you downloaded the app from the market. If you installed from SD card, it won't show up.

I tend to check in my Downloads section on the Market couple of times a week anyway and quite often there are updates available. I don't always seem to get the little icon in the notifications bar to say this tho.

Anyone getting CONSTANT force stop errors after HTC magic Update? (ROGERS)

If i sometimes try and open a 3rd party app or even some 1st party ones like Gmail, i get into a force stop loop. (app then android, app than android) that i can't get out of unless i take out the battery. This happens ALOT! never experienced this before the mandatory bs update!
Anyone got any suggestions on how to fix, will a factory reset do anything?
ive been getting FC on my gmail and email app
odd, but would you expect less from a rogers update?

oh im not hating on every little thing... my phone is VERY HARD to use!
Task managers??
Hey, I found that happening to me on this new update ROM and another i was running before if I was using "Free Advanced task manager"
It would work great for a while, then start force closing.
Just restarted phone, by removing batter because the FC's were so constant, and then downloaded another app for that duty. Running fast and smooth now.
Hope this is your issue and not something more.
Force close...
I recently ran into another issue where having the full page weather widget would send the system into instant FC as soon as it tried to load the weather...
Honestly I'm still not sure what the problem was there but I ended up just switching "scenes" and it worked fine on another scene.
Simple but odd...
havent had any f/c since the update but the rogers rom SUX big time, my phone is slow as hell, no voice dialer and to be honest i dont really like sense UI very much
kicking myself for giving up root access for this lousy "update"
If the Rogers ROM is slow on your phone, there is indeed something wrong because it actually is very fast. It's the same as the HTC EU 3.05 update, the Rogers version just has a few Rogers apks added. I have tried the EU 3.05, the Rogers 3.05 and Cursorsense and I honestly couldn't tell which one was the fastest (Cursorsense maybe but it's so close that it's almost unnoticeable)
My guess about those speed problems and FC is that the old data is messing things up... I'd make a backup of my stuff and try to wipe the data (and as you don't have root : settings->sdcard and memory->factory reset should give the same result). If it doesn't help I'd then try to reinstall the update.
if u are using a taskkiller on your phone, make sure its not killing any of the tasks that are required for the rom to run, e.g HTC checkin Service, if the taskiller is killing the required services, it can lead to alot of random force closes

Helix broke time auto update

I installed the Helix Launched and played with it for a bit but decided that I wanted to go back to the stock home/launcher. So I uninstalled Helix, rebooted and chose the default home/launcher when prompted.
Ever since then, my clock won't auto update. If I lock the phone and unlock 30 min later, the clock will be 30 min behind.
My only guess is that is that time update code that was linked to the stock home/launcher got severed when I installed Helix.
Now, the only instance where my time is correct is immediately after reboot. After that it won't update while the screen is off.
Before someone suggests it, I've already uninstalled my app killer (StartUp Auditor) but it had no effect.
Any ideas other than re-installing the OS?
UPDATE: Just realized that nothing on the my home screens are updating. Time (top right and widget), Data counter widget, Juice defender widget, timescape). The only time they update is if I go into them. That never used to be the case.
try factory reset to see what happen.
Ya, I was trying to avoid that. I'm hoping there's an option to fix the prob vs starting from scratch.
I have been going back and forth between helix and others, and have never experienced that problem. Have you tried removing the widgets and re-adding them?

Ya. Doesn't seem to help. Plus that wouldn't effect the time in the top right corner (what is that called any way..."system tray"?)

I have the same problem..
Max, I was impatient and did a system reset and it fixed the problem. Installed all the apps again and I'm good to go. Annoying but at least I'm back with a real-time clock. LOL. Funny concept, eh? I'm getting a full day on the phone with one charge so I'm going to stick with the stock home and hope that SE's software/firmware fixes will help with the speed/battery life like they've said.

Sorry, not following you there. I tried uninstalling apps that I thought may cause the problem and rebooted a few times to see if that helped. Not luck. After the reset, all is well in X10 land.

LauncherPro always hanged in 2.2

I tried different leak rom before,
and right now I am using official froyo
Every time after starting up the system, or after mounting the SD card,
when the media scanning is finished, launcherpro is not responding and hanging.
Anyone got the same thing?

I think another update is coming soon for lp. I sometimes get a lockup and fc in 2.1 with lp

I have the same thing, it's so annoying that I switched to Zeam. Hopefully a new update will come soon.
Same thing happens to me. I am running official Rogers Froto on my AT&T Captivate. I tried looking in the logs for something, but I couldn't find anything. Send a emails to the developer.
Yea I've tried like 20 roms.always locks up and force closes after reboot. Sometime it sits for like 5 mins before the fc message pops up. I have the plus version and running Axura 2.2.7.1 Voodoo.contacted tech support about it and he said that its my rom.can't be. tried 20 different Roms.pisses me off.

I have had this happen a couple of times as well. However, I have noticed that it only happens when I try to start opening things or moving between home screens before the media scanning has finished. If I let it do its thing, then it doesn't seem to hang ever. Still kind of annoying, and I don't know if that is the case with you all as well, but that seems to be what causes it on mine.

Nope because I always wait till the media scanner is done.but it still locks up and a fc message pops up.even let it sit for like 20 mins before but was still stuck until it errored out and fc again.they need to fix the dam bug.I even got the plus version.

LP runs fine for me, but I'm having a problem having it stick as the default launcher. Whenever I use Titanium Backup or long-press the home button, I'll get the prompt asking me which home application. There are a couple of other apps that result in the same problem, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. I've tried using Home Switcher to see if that fixes it, but no luck. I have the same problem with ADW EX.
This is happening to me as well.
If it locks up, try repeatedly hitting home, usually will give me a prompt to wait or fc. I never get this issue on my galaxy tab and it's running 2.2

Looks like there is enough evidence to show them launcher pro has some kind of problem in vibrant 2.2
This happens to me as well. Hold the hime button then go to task manager and kill lp.

When lp acts funny for me I hit the power button then unlock it and that usually works for me.
LauncherPro has worked great on my device with 2.2 (Nero V5) the only time I seem to notice anything is when the media scan is finishing its thing and there are to many apps running at start up in the background. I use advance task killer to kill the apps that do not need to be running and I never seem to have the problem again until I reboot. It doesn't seem to me to be a LauncherPro issue, media scan seems to bring the device to its knees until it is finished. Once my device is running smooth I never seem to have that issue again only after I reboot my device.
Love my Vibrant and LauncherPro Plus is far better then all the other Launchers I have tried (in my humble opinion) but each of us have different needs I guess. I actually use almost everyone of the widgets and can not wait for the update coming when the gmail widget will be added to the Launcher.
cheers

So just to update on the topic I downloaded Launcher Pro again today and everything works well. No hanging after reboot and no other problem from what I've seen. You guys may want to give it a try.

I was using Nero5 and got the same problem FC alot in LauncherPro. I couldn't save the LP settings though. What seemed to fix it is removing LP and reinstall it. After that, things seem to work better and less FC with LP.
I'm using stock Froyo now with fresh LP install from the market, no FC so far. So I would say it's not LP always hanged in 2.2...but something is stuck or got carried over from previous installation/ROM. Just try remove it and reinstall LP again from Market, it should work better - at least for me, it did.

Same thing happens to mu phone on adw ex... when i turn my phone off and turn it back on, the screen goea blank, i can only see the notification bar scanning, but would hang on black screen then shuts off by itself.. that's with stock ka7.. now im on ka6 kies version and my phone is fine...
or maybe the cause was the lock screen? I used the pin code lock screen.. it could be it? Now im on ka6 official and with pattern lock screen, it seems fine... and i domt wanna try and use any other lock screen besides the pattern one. Ive done countless reflash because o this issue.. so no more flashing, lol.. but i could be wrong though, it could be something else that's causinrit, just speculating..
The only time I've experienced a FC of any kind on LPP, is when I had Colorize running with it. They don't play nice together. Other than that, it's been 100% stable for me with any rom.

Anyone else experience slow home screen rendering with GB?

I'm running the rooted, official version of GB on my DX (no rom) and whenever I exit out of an app and back to my home screen it takes like 5-10 seconds for my Agenda Widget to render. Annoying to say the least.
Anyone else having this issue? Is there a solution?
Edit: The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking this may be an ADW issue, which worked great on FROYO.
May have to check it out with LauncherPro to compare.
i'm on a non-rooted DX with OTA Gingerbread downloaded and I'm having issues with LauncherPro being slow and often times force closing on me. Maybe MotoBlur isn't playing well with other Homescreen apps?

I had the same issue... I noticed a severe lag and then eventual Force Close - Blank Screen situation using LauncherPro on a rooted DX after the Gingerbread update.
Is anyone else having issues with LP and Gingerbread too?
i went on launcherpro forums on their site and few people are having issues with the force closing as well after GB update. glad to know i'm not the only one having this issue. i've sent out errror reports through my phone so hopefully there'll be a quick bug fix for this.

My girlfriend had this issue too. I didn't update, since I'm waiting for a rootable OTA(which judging by the OP, there is one now?), and for the first 5 minutes, her phone was locking up because of Launcher Pro. I couldn't do anything, because any touch on the screen would then cause Launcher Pro to stop responding. Force quitting just gave her a blank screen. Luckily, after 2 battery pulls, it stopped force closing and seems to be working just fine now.
OP, can you point me in the direction for the root hack for the recent OTA?
I updated to GB via OTA and haven't had a single issue with my launcher or any of my apps freezing.
The stock motorblur launcher in GB occupies much more memory than it did in Froyo.
Could this be causing a contention for resources if you have multiple launchers installed?
Sent from my unrooted DroidX using XDA App
I had issues with Launcher myself, but if you go in and tweak settings about how Launcher handles screens such as transition speeds and extra visual effects, you can speed it up quite a bit and I haven't had anymore force close issues (knock on wood)
Now to figure out the Gallery's issues. "sigh"
Just kept rebooting...
I just rebooted a few times (like 5 i think) anyway, that seemed to work fine as I have had no issues after that.. Def much 'smoother' with official GB... now i need gingerbr*** v1.30!!!! (to work with 2.3.3)
I notice when switching screens the brightness will tick up a bit after the animation. It's as if the animation stutters a bit. Turning it off makes the transistion instant, but the brightness still ticks up a bit when going backward on the menus or screens.

[Q] Homescreen widgets not updating/freezing

Any idea what would cause ALL of my homescreen widgets to stop updating i.e. freeze for no obvious reason? I'm completely stock & un-rooted, and when this issue first came up I did a factory reset but the problem still comes up out of nowhere. Everything will be working fine and then out of nowhere they all stop updating. Here are the widgets I use:
Fancy Widget
Switch Pro
Android Pro Widgets
BattStatt Pro
I've been using these same widgets for at least three years, and over three different devices, and this has never been a problem, which makes me think it's something weird with KitKat. At this point I'm removing widgets one by one to see if I can narrow it down, but it is so f-ing frustrating because everything will be fine for a day or two and then WHAM all of my homescreen widgets just lock up and the only way to get them to update again is to reboot the device which is a pain in my ass. It's worth mentioning that even after all the widgets freeze the stock 'Weather' widget still works fine...
Help!
Nova launcher much better than touched just use that?

Thanks, I'll give it a try to see if I still have the issue. I used to run LauncherPro back in the day - even paid for the plus version - but then the dev promptly stopped releasing updates, and I felt somewhat ripped off. . . From then on I've stayed with whatever launcher came stock on the device.
How did you manage to put widgets on lock screen?
I had it on my S4 but I couldn't find that settings in the S5.

I posted about the same issue in the Verizon GS5 forums: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2738912. Hopefully one of us will get an answer. My weather widgets were stopping the refresh (BeWeather and Beautiful Widgets), and I use Go Launcher and Apex. And my interval between requiring a launcher restart drops - initially its a couple days, but as time progresses, I need to reset more and more frequently.
Not sure its a KitKat specific issue - my Nexus 7 (2012) running KitKat runs all widgets fine.

So, I'm NOT the only one after all. And you have this issue even on Apex? Not good - I was hoping that would be a solution for me.
In searching around online I found the following info on another forum:
"this issue occurs because kitkat has changed the way it manages background alarms. most widgets that update frequently use "alarmmanager" to trigger each update. but in kitkat, the trigger event is intentionally delayed so that android can group processes together, saving battery life and data use. so, for all those clock and weather widgets, the developers have to write a bunch of new code for kitkat devices, so that their widgets update at the intended time."
After reading this I tested a theory and set my alarm to go off in 2 minutes. The alarm went off, and sure enough all widgets were frozen . . . I figured it must be the 'Timely Alarm Clock' app causing the issue, so I uninstalled and went back to stock alarm. This didn't work however, because two days later everything froze up again . . . I'm wondering now if it might be one of the other apps I'm using in the background, but there are so many possibilities and the issue is so intermittent. I never use 'task killers' or battery monitoring apps, so that isn't it. I could spend weeks trying to narrow it down, and it's always possible that more than one app could be causing the problem.

I can't speak for the author, but I believe he was referring to "alarms" from a programming sense. I.e. the alarm is what "wakes up" the phone to tell it to go on the internet, fine the latest weather info, and update the widget.
Widgets are working fine on my Nexus 7 (2012) that runs KitKat. I think I had a similar issue on my SGS3 when I first got it, and I posted to those forums a couple years ago, but now for the life of me I cannot remember what the solution was...it may have been to move to Apex!
Interestingly enough, the problem seems to have fixed itself. There were updates to Apex in the meantime, perhaps its that.
My friend with Go Launcher is also seeing the same impact - the issue is gone.

I hesitate to respond for fear of tempting fate . . . But since installing Nova launcher two weeks ago I haven't had a single issue with home screen widgets freezing. I am also experiencing truly great battery life now, but I'm not sure if Nova had anything to do with that since I made a number of other tweaks I'd done trying to fix the widget issue. In any case, I finally feel like my S5 is glitch free and functioning as a next-gen device should.
