Headphones Causing Phonecalls, Musicplayer Problems?!? - Droid X General

I have been experiencing this ever since I got my Droid X. I have researched it and found a little about it on some other forums. It seems like the Droid X's headphone jack is not a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack. Its the standard SIZE but doesn't have the normal 3 pins. The Droid X has 4 pins. The extra pin is used for music playback control and/or for a "headset" microphone. I can't get seem to find any official information from Motorola about this at all. The official specs just say "3.5mm headphone jack".
You're like "So what dude? Who cares?"
The problem is that most headphones (like the ones I have tested out) have the standard 3 connector pins. This means they don't fit exactly right into the jack, and can apparently bridge other pins in an undesirable way. What's that mean? For me the symptoms are simple:
-with the headphones plugged in, if I wiggle them, my phone tries to make a phone call
-Alternately, if I have music playing, depending on the player, the playback pauses / resumes. I'm not sure if its detecting the "headphones unplugged" event or the "control button pressed" event.
On occasion, this makes using my headphones on my Droid X really god damned annoying. The other forums I had read basically said you just need to buy a 4-pin adaptor. Radioshack didn't have any, and referred me to the internet.
Has anyone else experienced this? If you're feeling curious, try to reproduce it. Do I just have a screwed up headphone jack?

My headphone jack has been friendly to all of my headphones and adapter cables
However, I do have a pair of the iPod Touch 4 pin headphones with mic and controls, and the controls are screwy at best.

Do your headphones have 4 conductors like this:

Or only 3?

I had the same problem on my original Droid. I would be listening to Pandora with my phone in my pocket and then it would start a media player in the back ground and play another song over the Pandora station. I noticed of I twisted the headphone jack it would skip songs or stop them. I rooted and went with cyanogenmod and that has fixed my problem.

My iPod headphones are like that. My others are just the 3 conductor and they have no problems.
The iPod headphones act funny, volume up dials the last dialed phone number lol

I have this exact same problem on my droid 1. I figured I had to try to jam something down there to get it to work, but If there is an easier way to fix this I am definately interested. My headphones only have the 3 connections, so do I need to get the 4?

I guess no one has any ideas?

I have no idea, my regular 3 pin headphones work just fine, no errant phone calls or weirdness. It could be the jack on your phone is 'off' a bit and the one of the contacts think it's keeps getting signals.

Wizard generates noise when powered

Hi all!
I am using my Wizard in my BMW 1-series by hooking it to the AUX-port of the built in stereo. That way I can use it for TomTom, MP3's and phone, using the speakers of the car.

This works like a charm, but when I power the device using the cigarette lighter, it starts developing a lot of background noise. I can even hear the ESP computer kick in when I step on the gas to make the rear break out (rear-wheel drive rules!!!) It then generates a high-pitched tone.
I already routed power straight from the battery but this only made things worse. Appart from the noise already described, I then also hear the car's dynamo cause a noise that varies with the RPM of the engine.
I am starting to believe that this noise is standard when the Wizard is powered, but I would like to hear if you have similar experiences.
Thanks for your input!
Stefan
Same problem
I have exactly the same issue in a Ford Mondeo...
Tried alsorts, filters, supressors... no joy. When plugged in, it gives 'noise' on the line in, which is a total pain in the butt!
So, this seems to be a typical Wizard issue...
To bad, since I thought I had re-invented the wheel.... Anyone have a clue as to what causes the problem. Could switching to a lower voltage or lower amperage perhaps solve the problem?
Thanks!
Stefan
I dunno...this issue is lot older than the Wizard and older than mobile phones, too. Lots of audio devices have had this problem with car or 120v home adaptors.
The simplest test is to try another adaptor, like a Targus. If that works, your adaptor is not filtering engine "noise" (electronic, not audio). Or it's not smoothing the electric current sufficiently. Since mine doesn't have this problem in either my car (M-B) or my truck (toy), I wonder about your adaptor/MDA.
Does it do it in other cars? Does it do it when using a 120v adaptor, or (better still) when you plug the car adaptor into a 120v to 12v converter?
One 2nd best solution would be to carry a second, charged battery, and recharge when you aren't using it as an MP3.
Curiously, nobody seems to have come up with a reverse A2DP Blue Tooth solution that allows you to beam your Hi-Fi sig to a receiver that pumps it into the AUX on a car, PC or home stereo system. I haven't tried using the B/T Stereo Headphone adaptor that came with my B/T phones to see if it can receive as well as broadcast (You use it with non-B/T devices so they can talk to your headphones--I use it at night when I don't want to wake the house but want to watch a loud movie).
Good Luck!
Sounds like your garden variety ground loop troubles.
I would do a quick search on google for 'ground loop' and see what comes up.

Headphones question for Fuze

So I can not stand the giant stock adapter that comes with the fuze and how you have to plug that in and then plug a wired headset to it to listen to music. I use little ipod headphones that go directly into my ears and sound great, but I am stuck using the giant adapter that came with the phone since the headset does not plug directly into the Fuze.
So I have a few questions.
1) does anyone have a headset recommendation for the fuze that plugs directly into the phone
2) see the 3 options shown at the bottom of this page -
Code:
http://stores.ebay.com/One-Stop-Cell-Shop_HTC_Fuze-Touch-Pro-at-t-gsm_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ562650016QQftidZ2QQtZkm
they all plug directly into the fuze with no need for the giant middle adapter I have been using that came with the phone. do you think any of those will work. Or do you have any recommendations.
Thanks for your recommendations and feedback.
TV,
We keep shopping at the same places. I bought the mini-usb stereo headset at the same time I purchased my pink rubberized case (the same as the one that you had to shave down).
It works like a charm!

Hello and thanks for the info. Do you have a link to the one you bought? Thanks!
ebay store: One Stop Cell Shop
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-STEREO-HEAD...photoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262
thanks for the link - how do those feel in your ears. They look different then the traditional ipod headphones. Are they comfortable?
They feel fine. I don't wear them all day nor do I run while wearing them (I only run if someone is chasing me) so I suppose it's all relative. They don't fall out constantly like some nor do they feel like they are about to fall out.
The sound is as good as the OEM's from my past devices. The FM radio comes through as clear and sharp as it does with any traditional radio. No volume control on the wire, only an answer button, but I don't seem to miss it as the Fuze is after all at the other end of the wire, lol.
Like you, I didn't want to need the adapter so I found these right away. There may be others (better) out there now since the device isn't as new. FWIW, I have no idea what an ipod headset looks like.
HTH.
sorry about that - standard ipod headphones look like this -

i like the ones you suggested and for $12 they look fine to me.
Do you get sounds (phone calls AND MP3s) in both ears? My old HTC Wizard had sound in both ears, but when I use that old pair with the huge FUZE/Raphael block adapter, I only get sound in 1 ear for MP3s *or* in phone calls. I realize the phone call isn't stereo, but I like mono in both ears while on the phone.
The one I just purchased says that the phone and music work in stereo.
I purchased this one - http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-STEREO-HEAD...photoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262
paid last night and before morning I received notification that they were shipped.
100% stereo sound
They are 100% stereo. Everything I have on my device comes through in both ears...FM radio, phone calls, media player, videos and dvds, notifications and reminders.
Everything works as it should as well when a call comes in, they switch to the call and back to the music when the call is over.
Yes, mine shipped very quickly also.
Highly recommend.

help required: dr.dre beats solo acting wierd on the x10

hey
just got an x10 from rogers
i have a pair of dre beats solo, they have the mic on the wire as u can see there. it has hte up/down volume and a silver button in the middle to answer calls.

anyways when i plug them in to listen to music everything sounds really echo-ey and distorted, however when i press down on the middle button on the wire of the dre beats it sounds like regular headphones.
note this only happens with my dre headphones. tested it with regular headphones with no mic on the wire and it sounds fine
wondering if theres any way around this without having to swap out the wire on my dre's..
---- also on a side note does anyone know how to get the dre headphones working as a headset becuase i cant take calls using it, it wont work for some reason.
bump anyone?
Have you tried your head phones on a different phone? Sounds like it might be a problem with the head phones rather than your handset..??
It's a problem with the phone. similar problem has also been reported with iPhone earphone. solution: use another cable or don't use it
Solder the answer button pins straight, without the button.
Its a problem with the phone, because I have the Dr Dre bets studio headphones and they work fine when I used them on my Blackberry but on the Xperia they sound horrible. I think the phone just doesn't know how to register them if that makes sense because even on my BB I had to manually switch to headset mood in the music player to make them work. Well it doesn't really bother me because the difference between the solos and the studios is that the studios come with a extra wire without a mic and the headphones work GREAT with those.
yeha its a problem with the x10 and not my headphones, which i use for my laptop and touch pro 2/5800 etc.
i'll have to buy another wire which doesnt have the mic built in. another solution ive found is using a headphone jack splitter (wire which plugs into the headphone jack and allows 2 pairs of headphones to be connected to it) allows it to work fine as well.
thanks for the help

[Q] Microphones?

Anyone know of a microphone that I could just plug into the audio port and leave there or anything? Does it support audio input through the mic jack?
The recorded audio on the Iconia is completely awful and useless.
Where's the mic jack? All I have ever seen is the headphone jack, USB, HDMI and charging ports.
Yes it does support audio input through the headphone jack. The internal mic is so bad it's practically impossible to do a video chat. I used a psp headset I had lying around, works like a charm for gchat/skype.

Really? I tried plugging in a standard headset that works on my Acer laptop and it certainly cut off the internal mic but sadly no sound from the headset mic.

The 4 section headset comes standard with most of today's smartphones.
I have tried the headset that came with the Iphone 3GS and the Blackberry and they both worked on the A500 for making calls over Skype. The sound quality from the Blackberry headset was much better that the one from Apple.
But, I did notice that the internal mic produced better results when using the recorder function.
Probably need to adjust the mic level on the external headset, but I could not find the setting to adjust this. When pressing the volume button on the A500, a set of slider bars would appear - sometimes there would be a setting for the mic, but more often this would be missing.
Can someone shed some light on how to get the mic slider bar to show up. Thanks.
Dug out the headset that came with my Nexus One and it worked! Couldn't see a volume control for the mic though, just the three standard ones.

Almost all headset with mic will work on A500, just ebay it
can anyone else confirm the iphone headset works?
the mic on my iphone headset doesn't work at all in the A500. it works in the iphone so i know its not faulty.
i then tried an "urban ears" set and the mic works perfectly so i know its not my A500.

Wired headsets in which the button works?

Ive just accidentally broken the headsets that came with the phone, and now Im looking for another headset.
The problem with our phone is that the pinout (the mic and ground pins) is inverted in comparison to samsung, LG, HTC etc ). Therefore, we cant buy just about any headset. Also, I want a wired headset (not a wireless one).
Is anyone using a wired headset in which the button works? I want to be able to take and drop calls, and long press to skip track (which would work if taking and dropping calls works).
Yes, I'm using Jabra Chill headset (got it new for 10€), the pins on the jack are the same as original Huawei headset. Also I'm using Headset Button app, that can emulate multi button headset, so I can skip tracks, forward/reverse songs, etc.
Thanks for the info. Just needed to know one more thing. Does the mic work as well? Can you use the button to receive calls? Also, do you have a u8800 or one of the variants? Is there any difference in the pinout for the u8800 and the variants?
Mine phone is U8800, my brother has U8800 pro. Both phones have same pinout. The microphone and the button is also working. If you are using the Aurora rom, you should also tick "use headset microphone" in sound settings.
Do you know a headset like the one you pointed but in-ear?
Those are better at isolating the ambient sound.
Ive ordered one. Lets hope it works out when it is delivered. Thanks for the help Schrauff.

I haven't tried them out, but they have 4-pin 3,5mm jack and mic+button.
I'm also found the a-JAYS One+ which is a great looking headsets with a flat tangle-free cable and has a mic+button.

Anyone tried one and can confirm that the button works?
Just got the Sony Ericsson MH-650. In ear, perfect noise isolation and the button works quite well. Awesome sound quality as well. Thumping bass and crystal clear trebles
Totally recommended for everyone. At Rs. 1500 (do your conversions, I'm too lazy), theyre really nice.
Just bought a Novero Brooklyn Wired Stereo Headset with Mic http://www.novero.com/collections/music-headsets/brooklyn.html but it turns out that it's not compatibly.
I listen only one channel on both phones and when I click the button I listen regular stereo.
They seem to be great headphones, but not compatible with our 8800.
Crap

It switches the Ring2 with the Sleeve.
Probably there are more cheaper version on ebay/dealexterme.
Apparently our phone has Sony Ericsson Xperia compatible pinouts, not iPhone compatible.
