Airport mode and wifi. - XPERIA X10 General

Hey ppl just wanna know if there is a way to use wifi in airport mode?
Sent from my X10a using XDA App

I need too
Sent from my X10i

That makes no sence, airport/airplane mode is supposed to not under any circumstanses interfere with air radio and controllers. And you are by international laws forced to use this mode or completely turn your device off in flight, or in hospital enviorement where sensetive machines are in use.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

yes you can
I use the paid app called switch pro widget from the market
it allows you to switch wifi on in airplane mode......

...doesn't that defeat the point of Airplane Mode?

could be useful....when you are roaming, and don't want to receive calls but want to browse the net and use less battery...

And also useful to ..um..use in-flight wifi services. Its available on a lot of flights now..Emirates for one.

Im travelling to US they are offering wifi at the hotel, so i dont wanna take calls or use my data while im away and pay lots of $$$ for roaming. Therefore its always handy to use wifi in Ap mode. Did u get it??

Yes, it works perfectly with SwitchPro Widgets.

No, it's totally understandable.
But, my point is, why bother using airplane mode? You can just turn off cellular services... There's plenty of widgets for that.

No, no, I meant that if you just want wifi on when in airplane mode, you can use switchpro widgets for it, but if you want to use GPS and Bluetooth too, without cellular service, just using a widget to turn it off.
Sorry if I did not get explained well, my english seems to be not good enough

GPS is not affected by airplane mode since it is not sending anything (unless you are using aGPS) if you run a program with pree installed maps, google maps require gprs or wifi so that wont work ofc.

Oh yes the maps are not on your device they are downloaded!!
Google Maps gets your location from the GPS sensor, but then has to go online to download the actual map data for that area.
so if the map of the area we are in, was downloaded befor then i think there wont be any problem ! i think it would be just like the quick gps software in diamond ! am i right ?
I think that should be a way of download the map and use it offline. Some cracker should make it easy

hehe, i tried 5 different apps and currently use gpsVP /w cached Gmaps imgs
pretty good for a free app, altho not totally easy to set up as there is no info...
since there is no maps for japan that i know of, never tried a commercial product, then again i prefer gmaps and my brain for navigation

in the last few versions of gmaps just install it onto the storage card and then you can just save whats in the applicationdata\googlemaps folder and use that offline

hey everybody, first post here....
i read that i should not start new posts if theres one going already.
I got my diamond about a month ago, its an alltel cdma diamond with original ROM, no registry tweaks, pretty much stock.
the GPS is being finicky. ive tried atleast 10-15 different GPS applications (all freeware or trials) and they are alway hit or miss. sometimes i get a 6-12 sat lock in seconds, even indoors... but sometimes i cant lock on outside even after 15min or more (even if i had a lock on less then 8hrs earlier). Ive been trying to find a pattern to why it sometimes works (certain settings, maybe after a resets, quick gps, etc)
side note, i used the G-Watch app while in poland where i have no phone coverage. it worked perfectly everytime i turned it on with almost instant lockon. but back in florida every program i try sometimes works and sometimes doesnt, even if i turned the phone to airplane mode.
question 1- is this considered normal for the alltel diamond
question 2- does the software that costs money (ie tomtom) work any better/more consistently
question 3 - could there be something wrong with my phone
question 4 - any ideas how to make it more stable
thanx for the help
also, on some of the gps programs, it will say i have found up to 8 or so sats, but wont lock onto any of them...
thanx again

GPS Roaming Charges?

Am thinking of using copilot on my phone when I go away to Portugal. What I want to know is will using gps incurr any data charges? Will be using the phone in flight mode and run nodata as well to make sure all connections are cut but don't want to get a nasty surprise when I get back. Anyone used their hd2 abroad for navigation before?

gps is totally independent of your provider, you won't be charged anything for using it. (as long as you do not download any additional maps etc, but as you said you set your phone to flight mode this shouldn't be a problem)
or get the app dialup enabler/disabler which lets you deny access to your mobile data connection with a simple toggle. THen you dont need to use flight mode.

How GPS works:
SENDER: Satellites in Earth Orbit send slightly falsified signals (this is why only the fu...... as....... of the military receive data exact on the cm/ft) to Earth surface (24 hrs a day worldwide free of any charge)
RECEIVER: Your HD2 has a GPS-receiver and by the different travel times of the signals from the different GPS-satellites calculates Your position (Lat/Long/Elev) with aberrations of 5-10 m (15-30 ft)
UNTIL NOW EVERYTHING IS FREE !
For quicker lock-in to the satellites the HTC-PDAs use a "Quick-GPS" function (download of GPS-sats-position for a period of 6 days)
THIS You have to switch off in Roaming mode to prevent costs for data-traffic
Have fun in Portugal

Navigation without data possivle?

If I were to remove my sim and therefore have no data or service with my nexus could I still use Google navigation? Can I basically keep my device as a GPS? And if I can does the navigation suffer (slower, not as accurate, etc)?
Well, you would have to use WiFi to get the directions and load the route. Google Navigation does all the routing and maps online, but caches the directions and appropriate maps for the journey itself. During the trip you wouldn't be able to search or reroute, though.
There are various apps you can purchase that will let you do that, though, such as CoPilot. You can use WiFi to purchase CoPilot and download the maps, then use it connection-free as a GPS.

The maps may be off-line but you'll still have to connect for live traffic. But yeah, it should work without data and just update whenever it has connection such as 3G/4G or Wifi.

Well, I just suggested airplane mode as a "trial" test to see how it would work out. But I assume that the results wouldn't be too good doing this.

Do we need a internet connection in order to use our GPS

Do we need a internet connection in order to use our GPS
i ask this because i only become connected to Navigation when i enable my service providers data, which tells me our phones GPS is actually just location by data & not from satellites. however the phone is advertised to have a built in internal dedicated GPS reciever.
Some one please clear this up
GPS conection is free of charge..but in some navigations like Google maps, you must have internet access,.you schould find navigation sush as iGo,couse it doesn't nead one..hope I answer to your question..
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
Its because in the Nexus the GPS chip is helped by knowing roughly where it is using the phone data to know which radio tower it is near to. Once the phone knows approximately where it is the GPS can pin-point much quicker.
Its called A-GPS (assisted-GPS)

I prefered iGO on my old hand-set,couse it was realy great..you schould try it..But you cant get it from market, dont know why..You can find it on internet.
There is a planty of navigations.it really depence what phone do you have, becouse of screen resolution or performance of the unit..?
what ive noticed it requires a data connection get u directions. it doesnt need one to find you.. but if u want the arrow to move like a normal gps, needs to INITIALLY have internet.. so u can get all the directions and whatever on a wifi and go from there.. works. ive done it that way xD
You don't need data at all for GPS itself to work. It will take quite a while to get a lock but it will. You would of course need a app that has the map area downloaded. The arrow WILL work as normal without and internet. I did this when I first got my nexus. I did not even have a sim in for a month due to the fact I was waiting for my other prepaid plan to expire.

3G works like on-demand

Hi All,
I have been having problems with my S3 for some time now.
HSDPA. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. It works as if it was set up to work on demand.
Where could it be set up like that? I have checked every menu and cannot find anything.
Help much appreciated.
I don't understand, do you mean it keeps switching between 3g and H when you ate using it and not using it?

HSDPA works and in a few seconds stops. No data at all. Then HSDPA works again for a few seconds and so on. No pattern or anything. I tried to keep it running by keeping Skype work, but it would disconnect from data completely again. It is connected to HSDPA network and I can make calls over that, but no data.
Sounds like your being ping-pong'ed between antennas.
Usually flashing a eastern modem (I can recommend the ZN... ones) should fix it since they are optimized for large cities which have this issue.
Also, having a proxy server configured in the APN settings may cause this issue if it's overloaded and causes connection resets.
If you have one configured, write down the settings(in case you need it ) and try removing it.

Some good ideas.
Heading to the modem collection thread.
No proxy in APN.
An interesting thing is, that I went to another city a few hundred km away and everything was ok, so I thought it was the phone and it started working again. I am back in my area and it is happening again. The only thing is, no one else is having these porblems, even people using S3.
EDIT:Just fashed ZNLH3 using CWM and will start testing. Right after starting the phone, there is no data active.
EDIT2: I forgot to mention, that when I switch to GSM only mode, EDGE works just fin, no disconnects at all.
Try fast dormancy apps from play store and disable it.
The switching between hsdp and 3g is not a problem. It is a technology to preserve your data usage when you are not using.

There is no problem switching between 3g and H, there is a problem with switching between HSDPA and NOTHING.
ZN modems did not work.
Will try fast dormancy, the setting was not available in the ZN modem under *#9900#. Will try LH1 and Pay Store.
EDIT: FD switch installed and FD disabled. Will do some testing and report back. Working on LH1 modem now.
If you still have suggestions, they are more than welcome.

I am having exactly the same problem on 3UK... the data connection just stops working for no apparent reason
For another test, download a terminal emulator app from play store and then ping google.com or any other site in a loop ... See if you get breaks ...
Keep phone still ... Then try same with moving it around your house ...

Position has not effect, it happens wherever I am.
I will try with ping and see.
EDIT: PIng seems to make the connection persist. Will keep it running and see.
Been running ping for over an hour now and no data cutoffs. Means there is something that keeps disconnecting me.
How do I find out what and fix that?
To answer my own question:
I instaled DLI1 last night and so far in almost an hour not a single data blackout!
I was wrong blackouts still happen
Using DLI1 and FD switch, it now works much better, but there are still blackouts.
I will look for the GSM Monitor software and see if that can help me identify the problem..

Of course, I have had it set up like that since the beginning.
Remember that my problem is not with constant switching between HSDPA and EDGe, but with switching from HSDPA to nothing.
