[Q] Shuts down on detecting sim card - Streak 5 General

Anybody have had this issue? It likely has something to do with the ROM I am using, as I the problem has somewhat disappeared before when I was in 2.1 (but a bunch of severe problems I have had with 2.1 make it otherwise unusable). Is there a way I can further troubleshoot this by either flashing specific portions of the rom or by digging through engineering mode? (by the way, how do I enable the engineering options?)
Basically, if I shut my phone down outside airplane mode, then when I start my phone up it goes to the carrier splash screen, then the capacitive buttons blink and the thing shuts down. If I start up in airplane mode, then the moment I leave it the capacitive buttons blink, the service indicator goes from 'airplane mode' to 'no service', and it shuts down.
I am using a beta streak on Softbank mobile, Japan.

Have you tried it with a different sim? Just thinking that the sim itself might be causing it or that it might be something to do with beta units having their 3g service terminated elsewhere?

Haven't tried it with a different sim, but I know there isn't any special problems with the sim I use as it works just fine on my other phone.
I have got it to work occasionally, but if I turn my phone off its an excruciatingly long process of removing my sim card, turning the phone on, turning on airplane mode, setting it to GSM only (there's not GSM service in Japan), turning my phone off, re-inserting the sim card, turning the phone back on, turning off airplane mode, turning off data connection, and setting it to WCDMA. At that point it usually shuts down, so I have to restart the process until it works.
I REALLY don't want to have to do this every time my phone shuts down or overheats (which it does a lot of!)

weird bug with phone indicator not functioning properly

by the phone indicator I mean the reception status indicator. after I wake from sleep mode it would not show any reception status at all. I cannot go into phone settings after that, would tell me wait 15 seconds then try again but after 15 seconds, same thing.
I can use the phone however, calls would connect and incoming calls would connect.
a related bug that I noticed, I cannot disable flight mode properly either. after entering flight mode phone shuts off (normal) but when I wake it would not come back alive. phone indicator remains with an 'X' on it and I cannot force it to register on my network.
running on Rogers Wireless in Canada. although I doubt the network is causing this grief.
anyone else experience this? so far there's only 1 ROM version available that I'm aware of. so I don't think that'll have any effects on this.
suggestions would be appericiated.

btw forgot to mention I'm on an I-mate K-JAM.
all else set aside this is an excellent device. being my first pocket PC I know I will have a great experience playing with WM5.
I have tried manually setting all sleep options to 0 with PHM regedit. that includes BT and phone.
in case any fellow Canadians are wondering about the availability of K JAM in canada. the answer is NO. I had to order it from a US store, paid a fortune clearing it from the customs and waited 2 weeks for shipping. tough luck being a Canadian .
Yep, this happens on mine as well. Sometimes it goes so far as to say "SIM status unknown." I hope a ROM update can fix it.
I have had the same issue on occasion... Not sure if it 3rd party software doing it though... Don't want to hard reset just yet...
I could not exit flight mode one time. Soft reset fixed it.
somewhat of a fix. I just turn power off after 3 min thing off while on battery. manually lock keys and turn screen off everytime I finish using the unit. the battery definitely sucks a whole lot more but phone don't go to sleep anymore which fixes the whole not recovering reception issue. and flight mode seems to work better as well.

Same here with my Qtek 9100. And my 9100 continues to show the roaming icon even if I am under coverage of my home network (Vodafone Italy). I think that this one is a SIM related bug (I tried to use another SIM and everything was fine), waiting for the next ROM update.

No signal strength after flight mode

On my K-Jam when coming out of flight mode after a flight the signal strength meter shows no signal but I'm in a strong signal area and I can make and receive call fine. Switching the device off and on restores the signal meter.
Anybody else seeing this?
do you have anything installed that displays stuff on the top bars? maybe it's just a re-draw problem. if it doesn't affect performance then maybe it is ok?
No nothing installed which uses the top bar.
So, am I the only one with this problem? I am trying to stablish whether this is a WM% issue or due to something I have installed on my device.
anything that affects the radios then [i.e. stuff that turn on or off the BT/Telephone/WiFi]???
Only PPCProfilespro. I can try removing that I guess. will let you know.
i had a similar problem with older PPC phone. It would not turn the phone part back up, if my battery is low. Plug it in to a charger and it's back to normal.
Same problem here with an 8125 - need to reboot after using flight mode to get phone connected again. Means turning off and then soft booting vs flight mode is the best way to get on/off a plane. Annoying - the RIM guys are up and running instantly.
I've also seen this on my kjam a few times.
It doesn't show any signal bars but the green led flashes which indicates that there is a signal and i can make calls or send msgs!
Either a soft reset restores it back or by turnin Flight Mode on and off again..
how do u put the 8125 into flight mode
Well I uninstalled my PPCProfile Pro and it still does it. I then tried with another profiler (Phone alarms) and same thing. I think this is as MS software problem by the looks of it.
After flight mode it recovers... eventually
One of the things I've found is that if, after leaving flight mode, you just leave the phone for a while (at least 5-10 minutes) it eventually seems to show the signal strength properly.
Of course, that's a pain, so I usually just soft reset it.
When you say that it's showing the "..." and you can still make calls, do you know if GPRS also works? And, what about incoming calls?
Thanks!
sorry a bit offtopic: i can't find the thread with the GSM Test Mode (Reg-Hack, calling a phone-number...). Anybody has a link please?

Having big problem with SPV M3100 freeze/sleep of death

It seems that a lot of people with the Hermes has the phone crashing/freezing/sleep of death to varying degrees of seriousness. But most of you have solved the issue by offloading programs, etc.
My device from day one has crashed/frozen regularly & still doing so right now.
Upon reading about users with the same problem I assumed it was a piece of software but no matter what apps I had loaded or unloaded the phone would freeze, usually after waking up from sleep mode. Sometimes it wouldn't wake up at all & other times it wakes up only to freeze again.
Right now I've nothing loaded onto the phone just plain hard reset & set up 3G & wifi & even removed the sd card but guess what it still freezes up.
I've noted that 99% of the crashes occur under these circumstances. When wifi is activated & the phone goes into to sleep mode without deactivating wifi, when I try to wake it up it'll freeze & not wake up at all or sometimes it will wake up but then freeze up again.
Maybe you guys can try it. Just activate wifi & let the phone go to sleep. Wake it up & see if it hangs. Please bear in mind though that it doesn't do it everytime.
Another thing I noticed is that when the phone freezes up it also gets very very hot which is a bit worrying.
This one single problem has spoilt what is actually a great device. I'm not sure what to do with it as I got it off ebay sim free. I've tried all the available different rom but no change. I'm beginning to think I might a defective wifi module or some other hardware issue.
This is a ROM problem, wait until newer ROMs come out and they will fix the sleep freeze issue.
This is happening to me too with my Cingular 8525 on the Black Majic Rom with WM6. Very, very frustrating! Maybe there's a program that can automatically turn off the wifi when I accidentally forget to turn it off?
I have Dopod Lite and I have option in Wifi Setting/Powersafe mode, where I can set Auto turn off after few minutes
I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM + AUTO) depending on your requirements.
Also read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2where the resolution was to get a new SIM.
Obviously this only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.

Mobile network stopped working MoDaCo 1.1

So, my brother and I have been running MoDaCo 1.1 core for a couple days now.
My phone has stopped connecting to the mobile network. All it says when I try to connect is "Standby for connecting to mobile network" with a green checkbox. I also notice now when I select the checkbox to connect it turns green instantly and shows that standby message. Before it would take a couple seconds to connect and turn green.
I have tried changing the mode of operation and it still doesn't want to connect. There is no 1x or EVDO in the notification bar. Wifi and GPS still work fine.
My brother's phone is still working fine. I have no idea what the problem can be.
Anybody else having this problem with MoDaCo 1.1?
I think that it has something to do with airplane mode. I enabled airplane mode yesterday, then turned it off. I didn't realize my data wasn't working after that since I don't use it while I'm at home. I am not sure if that is exactly the problem, just trying to think about how it could have stopped working.
I've noticed mine will do this at random on the MoDaCo 1.1 ROM. Every now and then I'll look at my phone and realize my EV symbol at the top is gone and I have no network connection. When this happens both the option in Settings and the small on/off widget on one of my home screens say it's still turned on. If I turn it off and back on, then I just get the "Standby for connecting to mobile network" message too. The only way I've found to get it to work again is to reboot the phone.
FYI this same problem happens to me with the stock ROM, even when it wasn't rooted. I've noticed it only happens when you turn airplane mode on, and then off.
Hmmm...I never touch airplane mode and I never saw this happen once in the month that I had the phone with the stock ROM. Maybe my problem is unrelated then.
Even when I reboot my phone it still doesn't work. I have tried messing around with the widgets turning things on and off multiple times and still nothing can get it working again.
I just went back to an old nandroid backup from before I put MoDaCo 1.1 on the phone and it seems to be working again. I'm going to put 1.1 on again. I'll use it for a while and try to recreate the problem to figure out exactly what it is.
Sprint/HTC has to fix that. it's a bug.

Odd Behavior on Boot

I have a stock unrooted Verizon Galaxy S5. For several months my phone has been plagued by several issues at startup. Whether I reboot the phone or start it up after the battery has died, it always enters an odd state immediately after loading and seems to get stuck in this state for an undetermined and variable amount of time (anywhere from a few seconds or minutes to hours or even overnight).
While in this state, this is what happens:
1. Screen stays on. Once I unlock the phone, the screen stays on. The side button doesn't do anything to lock the phone or turn off the screen. Holding down the button, however, still triggers the power menu. The screen timeout never triggers, even though it should turn off the screen after 2 minutes of inactivity.
2. WiFi and Bluetooth turned off. Even if they were turned on before I powered down the phone, they are not enabled when the phone first boots up. I can manually turn them on but the WiFi will not connect to a network, even if one is available. It may show it is connecting to the network, but it gets stuck at "Checking the quality of your internet connection" and continues to use the 4G network for data connectivity. This happens no matter what WiFi network I am within range of, so it's not an issue with the network or router itself. If I am not near a network at all I will still experience the other problems of not being able to lock the phone, etc.
3. Startup applications don't load. I have Tasker on my phone, but it doesn't load and show it's notification bar icon.
Otherwise, I can use the phone normally and open applications, surf the web, etc. It seems that loading some applications and using the phone eventually causes the phone to exit this mode, but I haven't been able to find a single particular application or series of steps to fix the problem. If I power on the phone and don't use it that just seems to make it take even longer to fix itself.
Once it gets out of it's weird state, the WiFi connection will become active (it will turn on WiFi if I haven't done so manually already) and it will connect to a known network if one is available, the phone will lock itself or I can do so from the side button, and things like Tasker and Power Save mode will turn on.
I am stumped as to what could be causing this problem or how to fix it. It seems the phone may be doing some kind of check, maybe related to Knox, that hangs during startup and prevents certain things from working until it straightens itself out.
Any clues into what this problem is, what is causing it or how I could further analyze this problem and determine its cause would be greatly appreciated.
Never heard of or experienced these issues. May want to contact Samsung.
Have you installed any official updates from Verizon at any point? I've heard of phones having phantom problems like this after receiving a bad update. I would definitely contact Verizon if you did update at any point. If not then like BigBot96 said, contact Samsung about the problem.
My wife's Note 2 did something similar when the battery died. I had to factory reset. Her phone was rooted/unlocked & running a custom TW ROM, though. May I suggest doing a complete factory reset and Odin. Backup data to computer or external sdcard since this will clear the entire device.
Edit: After rereading OP's post it actually sounds like an app is hanging at startup which could cause this behavior. A logcat should tell you what's going on.
