Hi all,
I'm trying to put a font in my new wildfire so I'll be able to read stuff in Hebrew.
I tried this guide : https://sites.google.com/a/bardavid.com/android-g1/Home/adding-hebrew-fonts
to add the fonts to my htc, but I had a little problem.
When I tried to give to command su in the shell, it worked, but then I tried the:
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
and then it told me: mount: Operation not permitted.
I used the SoftRoot to get the root permission, but it did not help, as you can see.
If someone here has a better idea of getting root permission, or a way to get Hebrew fonts on my HTC, I'll be more than happy, since I feel like I bought a plastic box and not a smartphone.
One more question: When I go to settings in my cell, and check for updates - does the update check is made in my cell provider (which in my case is Orange), or does the update check is made somewhere over the net?
And is there a date for Froyo release to the wildfire?
thanks all, I really appreciate it!

Just signed up for it, but thought I would let the community know about it!
MobileDefense.com > that
..and jesus that video is annoying.
Wavesecure as well............
Just took a quick glance at the three iTag/lifehacker, Wavesecure & MobileDefense. Is MobileDefense the only one that has free features on it?
mobiledefense is the ****. And the devlopers support custom roms.

I second/third/fourth Mobile Defense.
Here's why...
1) When installed as a system app on a rooted device it will automatically turn on GPS to get an accurate location whereas wavesecure will NOT turn on GPS and only use the cell tower location which is not accurate.
2) Their support forum is FANTASTIC, they support custom ROMs and are aware of those ROMs out there and any problems associated with them. I had a few issues at first (none of which was mobile defense's fault) and they had everything resolved in a few hours.
3) Their GPS ping time is very fast. Instead of just sending a signal every minute, its more like every 10 seconds.
4) No international SMS charges like with Wave Secure (although I know wave secure is getting a US gateway soon, still...)
5) The upgrades they have planned are superb (just check out their site)
Sorry for the n00b question but how do I install MobileDefense as a system app on my rooted Hero?
adb push MobileDefenseNameHere.apk /system/app

that wont work...
Put the com.neevo.mobiledefense.apk in your ADB tools folder
Code:
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
chmod 777 /system/app
exit
exit
adb push com.neevo.mobiledefense.apk /system/app
adb shell
su
chmod 755 /system/app
mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
reboot
Done.
I disapprove of the program.
Why you ask?
Becuase it has an i as the first letter in name, and it is then followed by a verb which is then captilized.
Reason why they didn't call our phone the iHero is because it sounds stupid. Hence why apple has the iPhone.
Another Mobiledefense user here. Great program. Excellent for tracking your kids.
Hi,
I got 4 days ago my new ARIA & this is really amazing machine.
I root the device & also tried installing the latest rom published in the forum - cm-6.0.2.1 but i liked more the originl ROM which came with the device.
The only problem i'm facing with the original ROM is that it doesnt support the Hebrew language so i'm getting squares instead of letters.....
I tried to use DejaVuSans.ttf solution.... the one with the instructions to do in the terminal the following commands:
1. mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
2. chmod 4755 /system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
3. dd if=/sdcard/DroidSansFallback.ttf of=/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
4. reboot
The 2 first command lines worked ok but when i'm putting the dd line (#3) , i'm getting an error saying there is no room on the device & then it gives me 2 lines - something about 0+1 checked in & 0+0 checked out.
After rebooting the device, its not sulving the Hebrew problem, any thoughts?
i want to keep the same rom & not updating it, just adding language fonts....
Eran.
So the current update, after fighting with the device i was able to complete the replacment of the DroidSansFallback.ttf file but it didnt solve the problem, i still getting squares......
Please anyone can help me with that, i really need it.
hey guys,
coming over from the DHD, i got a SGT and i love it !!!
but ive done the whole clockwork mod and all, and i was lucky to get a Tab from Carphone Warehouse in this country free of that dreaded locked bootloader problem.
I was just wondering, any chance if someone could give me a quick run through to check if i have EXT 4 file support / type.
I don't know if there is an easier way to do this from the phone but you can use ADB. As far as I know, you can't see the filesystem type from the phone only the files in /system.
Hook up you tab and connect to it via adb.
> adb shell
> su
> mount
You should see a list of mountable files of the filesystem. Look for
/dev/block/stl9 /system and 'ext4' beside it. That means its in ext4 format. If you see 'rfs' beside it then its in rfs format.
Hope that helps.
Well all done using terminal emulator.
Turns out i do have it
Now wait for the custom mods to come to the gate

Hi guys,
I'm really new here, I can't post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836022
I created a working ubuntu11.04 .img, with unity-2d. I don't know if anybody cares, it was funny to make.
It is just a minimal install with unity-2d and tightvncserver. Really minimal. Firefox, office applications, anything else DOES NOT installed.
However, you can install anything using apt-get install.
I installed wget and nano, because it was needed to configure the vnc. I plan to make a bigger one with all the programs and stuff installed. Maybe tomorrow. Or next week.
How to use: Unzip, rename to ubuntu.img and simply replace the original ubuntu.img with this one. Use root as user/nickname and ubuntu as password, as usual.
Download link to .img:
Download link to the other files needed:
Links tomorrow. "New" .img too.
If you are a mod and you're reading this, please move this post it the thread I linked in the beginning, or anywhere where this post is in its place.
-Sorry for my english.
Please help! Give me additional space by using my referral: http://db.tt/W0knUea
edit1: So, now I've got 10 comments, I don't have to write everything in separate comments. What I've done yet: make some simple script to automatically turn on/off the vncserver (1024x600, tab native res, I found it enough), and get tired of the resource hungriness of unity-2d. I mean it needs about the same CPU power (I guess) as the galaxy tab has, and it needs about 200MB RAM. But this is to run native. The VNC version is far from native, so it's slow as f..., I mean, very slow. Then I looked for a little less resource-hungry desktop environment, and I found lxde. I made an image with that. It's slow too, but much faster than unity-2d. I need to configure it a little more, to be more touch-friendly. And I want to do a few other thing, and write a how to make your own .img file thing. If you want to do it now, here some links, I will write about it sometimes.

I also suggest reading mount, umount and rootstock man pages.
This image works quite well. As with every VNC build, its a bit slow and Unity doesn't help that (even in its nice Unity-2d form), but if you want Ubuntu on your Tab this is a pretty sweet image. Ultra-lightweight, too. Nice work, OP!
Firstly, thankyou for not making 10 spam posts just to get this posted in the Development section, shouldnt take you long to get 10 posts under your belt in this thread then I'll move it into the dev section for you
Good job by the way..
how to run this?

It's writen down here.
The link to the files is in the first post.
Do I write 'bootubuntu' in command line instead of 'bootlinux' or do I have to change the filename of 'bootubuntu' file? I guess first of the two is correct, but it's better to ask than to brick
Oh and is the AndroidSDK really needed? I don't see anything about usage of it in instruction....

Hi!
The SDK is not strictly necessary since you could use a Terminal Emulator to run the necessary commands but using an ADB shell is just bit easier sometimes. That being said, you should install the SDK if you ever want to do much with an Android. It's easy to install and very powerful.
And yes, write bootubuntu instead of bootlinux when prompted. I know what you mean
Allright, I went through it and now got it installed . But I can't see firefox nor any office application... How to access them? Also can't get into terminal to write 'apt-install' there.....

I'll write a howto tonight or next day or I don't know. I need to study to university too. You need adb or android terminal emulator (from the market) to use apt. Short version: when your prompt is "[email protected]:/#" simply do this command: "apt-get install firefox"
Just poked around a little. Now I know (or at least I think I now) what else I have to do.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/41806444/bootubuntu2
Cleaned up version of bootubuntu. Copy it to /sdcard/ubuntu and simply run it. You need to use the sh command, so type "sh bootubuntu2" in android terminal emulator or adb shell in /sdcard/ubuntu foler.
Oh, sorry I forgot to mention, this script only works with overcome kernel and rom. You shold modify the
mount -o remount,rw -t ext4 /dev/block/stl9 /system
and the
mount -o remount,ro -t ext4 /dev/block/stl9 /system
rows. Enter "mount" to android terminal to see your /system dir type and path.
Synaptic looks like to work, software-center doesn't even start.
To really enjoy full linux distros like this, one should have a swap-enabled kernel. Instead, kernel on the Tab has no swap, and if you dare open some large app, the lack of ram makes it slow and unresponsive.
This is the main problem imho.

Thanks. I didn't know this is the problem. I will try out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=483110 this and see what happens.
@sisa7 do you have any update?

Sorry guys. Anybody know a decent upload site?
Also, I'm working on LXDE desktop. But the university makes me busy, so I haven't got too much time. Sorry.
Minus.com
Box.net
Multiupload.com
Is this still alive?
I tried installing the one in the other [MOD] Forum but when I try to install apps to Ubuntu I get a conection "404" error
Do you guys think this image will work?
Hi everyone.
I've been sitting for almost 6 hours trying to get my wifi fixed after upgrading to 4.3 and rooting it etc.
Last time I tried I was unable to stick to carrier network but wifi was working.
This time it was the other way around.
After ALOT of trying and failing, I finally fixed it.
mount -o rw,remount /
and
mount -o rw,remount /system
after this it was just to set permissions, I did chmod -R 777 on /dev and /system/etc/wifi
My guess, without any more checking, is that alot of permissions are set wrong within the image I downloaded from samsung-updates, and the one from sammobile, that is from samsung themselves.
The weird thing is that my father has a 100% stock phone wich got the update, it all worked like a charm.
Min did not, and it was not rooted......until now with knox 0x1 and everything else
Also, I did alot of searching, but the only thing I found was a fix for my modem, wich did nothing for me.
And since I did not find anything else, I figured this might help others in the same situation
Update: the "fix" has to be re-done after reboot.
Anyone has a better fix ?
It doesn't help with full wipe and reinstall.
Hi,
I have the same problem here
How do I?:
mount -o rw,remount /
and
mount -o rw,remount /system
Thx

after mount -o rw,remount /system
do a
chmod -R 777 /system/etc/wifi (I think this one makes the difference)
and
chmod -R 777 /dev
All requires root
I had a similar problem - no matter what I tried, I couldn't turn the wifi on, quick toggle would immediately switch back off and same in Settings. Every time I tried to switch it on I also got a Knox warning. Brilliant, well done Samsung.
I did some reading and it seems you can turn it on if you use a custom Kernel, but by then I'd given up and installed PacMan ROM, which will do until a proper 4.4 comes out.

I have tried two kernels, none of them fixed the problem, so for now the workaround have to work, I'm refusing to flash my phone.....again
Tody I actually had to go back to 4.2.2, I happy I for once did a nandroid backup yesterday befor I flashed 4.3, the phone stopped responding a few minutes after reboot, and gave me a flashing red light i the upper left corner, when screen was on.
After screen went off, the red light changed to a blue light.......
And I just saw that samsung pulled the 4.3 update as well....
I think my nex phone will be a nexus....if they at some point come with microsd slot.....if not.....perhaps going back to my old Nokia 6150, it was rock stable and had a week of power on one charge.
