WTF ?!
Just keep the Red button (hang off) ~3 seconds. It will cancel the DATA connection. Then you'll be able to surf over wifi.
Same procedure with messenger in case of you want it working through Wi-fi instead of DATA/GSM/3G connection

Well:
- start your wifi and connect it
- then you'll start messenger and connect
- it will try to start a data connection
- press red button quickly to stop it
- then messenger will use the Wi-Fi active connection.
This is how i proceed.
Regards
Use MoDaCo's NoData when you dont want any grps data, turn it off when you do
thanks
Thanks guys yes all of your advice kind of worked. Even though the MSN messenger is a big pain in the butt, it is always trying to connect itself. And to free my ram if I try to stop it running, the program restarts itself.
you coud try also placing device in flight mode - this will allow connections via wifi
I have been using a dialing CDMA cell over bluetooth for internet access from BlackStone.
The connection goes dormant after 10 sec inactivity. Each wake up from dormancy is charged a new call
Is there any app (preferably freeware) that constantly pings a public server say yahoo.com in background to keep the connection Alive?

HD Tweak has this ability just download and install and check what you want your phone to do I believe it has the option to remain connected when phone sleeps
Thanks for that ... I already have it.
Here the problem is not HD going to sleep but the external phone data connection... So I need to ping it repeatedly. I do on desktop with the ping command. (and earlier in my palm PDA by a IM client for Jabber).
Now on PPC I am lost. I tried an app called GPRS keep alive for WM5 but doesn't seem to work well on WM6 of THD.

Do you found a solution for the disconnect problem? At the moment I use "hrping -t -s 5000 google.de" at my desktop or vxUtils directly on the TouchHD.
vxUtils unfortunately makes the device so slow/unresponsive as to be useless. (looks like some incompatibility with the graphics processing of HD becuse CPU utilisation is not high). So still looking for a useable solution.
Hopefully some one writes a simple pinging utility... My service provider is minting money by data calls every 20-30 sec!!
Hi guys,
I have recently moved from symbian platform to WinMo. I do have a question regarding data connection. Does it ever auto disconnects? (for example in my old N95 if I clicked sync in my mail application, the phone would connect, download new mail and then auto disconnect when the job was done)
Also the phone would disconnect from data connection after closing app that was using it.
Now with my HD2 when I sync email, refresh weather etc the data connection stays on. Do I have to disconnect it manualy every single time so it doesnt drain my battery? It is very annoying since I have to do it manually very often.
Please advise... maybe I am missing something...
Cheers
Pete
Hi,
There's a few threads on here on data connection disconnection. There is also a hints & tips thread right at the top of this page.
Use this tool to find what you are looking for..http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=+site:http://forum.xda-developers.com&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all

install the 1 min disconnect tweak thats on this forum.
if you only set emails to check automatically it will disconnect ok using the above tweak but if you have weather and/or twitter apps connecting to update for some reason it will not close the connection at all i have told htc but never heard back
The only real reason for disconnecting a data connection is if you want to prevent unwanted costs associated with data exchange.
If you're in a weak signal area you can save battery by switching the connection band to GSM rather than 3G, but in a strong signal, 3G is more power efficient.
An open, but quiescent data connection has little or no effect on battery life as it's simply using the network infrastructure; battery usage only occurs during actual data exchange. So, if you turn off all the auto-update features and set email polling to a longer interval you should be OK. Kind of defeats the purpose of the device though

From my experience all Symbian devices and the iPhone auto disconnect from the network once the data connection is no longer needed. They also reconnect in the blink of an eye. It kind of irritates me that Windows Mobile doesn't allow you at least the OPTION of doing so. It's particularly annoying if you're connected to a speaker and can't get 3g as there's a constant noise going off. I also think it can't be great for your balls having that connection constantly active! It's not HTC's fault though, just I think a result of Windows Mobile being inherently quite archaic...perhaps Windows have just overlooked it.
There's a great free app HERE to tweak the WinMo connections for individual apps. It's a must have for me.

This really isn't a problem, I've seen N95's that retain their connection at all time (and some that don't) and to be honest it just makes your handset a little quicker.
WMLongLife is the nuts. You need it.
Thanks for the link, I pay per minute on my connection (rather than data transferred) so an open connection is not good for my bank balance
I am using APNdroid app for switching data connection from WIFI to 3G. However, I need to restart the phone every time to make it work.
Is this normal ? or Is there anyway we can fix it? I have searched through all the threads but didn't get much info.
Your help is much appreciated.
Not the answer to your question, but if you turn off 3G *only* when you turn on Wi-Fi, you don't have to do anything. While connected to Wi-Fi the data connection isn't on.
If you leave 3G on, Wifi (when enabled and connected) will disable 3G. Also superpower (in the app store) will turn off wifi and 3g when the screen is off. I also recommend Power Control Plus which provides a widget in which you can customize each button and toggle 3G and Wifi on the fly.
Thanks for the replies guys...To be more specific on the problem , I don't have any issue while I am on wifi its only when I switch to 3G...i tried beautiful widgets also ...looks like the problem is with phone rather than app
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
switching wcdma to gsm gives problems here too, .. so i wont!
Hello, few days ago I megrated from WM6 to Android in my HD2: everything is so better and it works very good, excpet the data connection settings!
In WM6 I installed a tweak (Montecristoff), and it turned my connection on/off just when I opened/closed internet or other apps.
Now I have the connection ALWAYS or NEVER...everytime I need to send mms, open market or internet, first I have to turn on the H/3G and then open the app I wanna use!
I'm searching an app that gaves me the connection automatically when I need, but when I stop to use, that app has to close the connection after few seconds!
I tried with JuiceDefender but it doesn't work like I want!
Please help me!
I try to explain it better:
I need an app for Android that allow my data connection just when I request, for example when I use Internet, Meteo, Market and so on...the rest of time data connection has to be down!
JuiceDefender does it, but not like I want...when the display is black, the data connection is off, but it's ok when I turn on the display...but I don't want this...I want that my data connection starts just lunching specific apps!
Thank you!
