I just bought a used Hero online and want to root it, install Froyo and then sell it. It is currently unactivated and came with stock .6 2.1 rom.
Is it possible to root it without activating it?
Would universalandroot work?
I seem to be stuck since I have no access to the Market and can't get a file explorer (Astro or eStrongs). Even if I had one, would it work unactivated?
You should be able to access the market via wifi. I have an old Hero (fiance switched to an Intercept) and I use wifi on it to update the market and browse the web.

I am going to be rooting my girlfriend's Verizon Droid 2 so that she can use tethering on it.
a few primary questions:
1. It looks like the best way right now is to use the instructions in this thread, right?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782556
2.Her computer does not have a wireless card. Are there any ways she can tether via USB? would she need additional software?
3. Any suggestions for user friendly / stable custom roms? I love Cyanogenmod which I have running on my Sprint Evo but it doesn't appear to be available for the Droid 2 yet.
Thanks in advance for help!
1. That's the method I used to root and it worked pretty easily. Just make sure that you install the motorola drivers before ever plugging the phone into the computer. You may be able to get it to work, but I've had terrible problems with my Droid 1 drivers.
2. I've never used USB tether so I'm not completely sure
3. I'd set her up with Fission using the Fission Rom Manager + bootstrap recovery. It'd be the easiest way for her to keep up with stable releases. Other ROMs you have to load the update.zip onto the sd card and update through clockwork manually.
If you are just looking at USB Tethering, just go get EasyTether. That's the easiest way to go about it. They say after 10 days, you won't be able to view secure sites. There is a way around this...
Uninstall the app, then reinstall it again.
As for rooting, that method you posted or the Z4Root method.
As for ROM's, take your pick. I am using Fission.
thanks for the replies guys.
so no one knows of a USB tether program free for root users? That stinks!
proxoid will usb tether by way of a socks proxy. You'll have to configure a socks proxy for each app on the client you want to use...

Kind of just told you.
EasyTether. It is free. Only problem is that after 10 days, you don't have https access, but like I said...
When you get to that. Uninstall the app, and reinstall it again, and it'll work again.
Thanks - Yeah I was aware of easy tether but that makes email impossible / hard she doesn't want to mess with that every so often. May be worth it to just by PDA net.
Just strange with wifi tether being available I would have thought a wired tether would be a much simpler feat.

hi, just got this phone for my son. wanted to update to android 2.1, had to jump thru hoops just to get to the update service. tried to download and install back and restore on the phone no go. it wont allow me to install other than market place. its stupid that this app is not already installed. is there another app i could use to backup the phone before updating? thanks. btw, sonyericson's site really sucks!!!
So you posted a thread just to tell us this?
I'm curious, what kind of hoops did you have to jump through to get the update service? It's rather easy to download the Update Service app via their website. Actually, I've found Sony Ericsson's website one of the easiest to navigate. The Backup & Restore application COMES preinstalled with the phone, atleast that's how it was when I got mine with 1.6.
*sigh*

Hello,
There are lots of backup apps on the market, I also did manage to search and download the backup and restore apk from the web. Haven't had any probs with x10 especially updating.
Ben.

Are you in the US by any chance? If so, you won't find 2.1
And market should already be installed - you probably did something wrong during the update process
You must be on At&t, right? My At&t x10 didn't have backup and restore installed on 1.6 and no 3rd party apps either.
Are you in the US, then? Hope you don't plan on updating with SEUS... We will NEVER get it here
You can get past the install block by using Sideload Wonder Machine- 2nd post HERE, linked you to the thread to cover common problems...
Or just search backup in the market and find another app...
And then once you backup you can flash to 2.1 with Androxyde & Bin4ry's flash tool. use x10a generic build 2.1.A.0.435
the phone kind of sucks as it is when you buy it. especially from at&t. as i did.
but once u get into things on this site the phone is completely awesome.
and does not need any more bashing lol
we are more than happy with out modded x10's.
sorry
hi, sorry i forgot to say it is an at&t phone. i have sideload 1.0, i copied backup and restore to my hard drive, tried to load it with swm, but would not allow access. i'll try market place and use a different backup app.
root and use titanium backup

First, if you just got it then there shouldn't be much to backup. Update to 2.1 and treat it like a new phone. Second, if you got it from AT&T your X10 is branded AT&T meaning they have put all sorts of restrictions and blocks on your phone. The one you are dealing with now is blocked access to non approved apps. Basically AT&T has pay services that they want to force you to use.
You need to forget about SEUS or PC Companion for now. You need to use the X10 Flash Tool 2.6 and flash x10a global generic firmware 2.1.A.0.435 found here on xda. This will debrand your phone lifting non-market app restrictions (you still have to check "allow non-market apps" in settings / applications). This will also give you the latest 2.1 update, including dualtouch. You can also use the flash tool to root your phone, giving you even more control to modify your system and remove the preinstalled junk apps you don't use that slow down your device.
Is there some way to crack this password they want , Is there a root for 2.2.2 VM intercept yet?
there are plenty of ways to root. search sdx android forums and use any wifi tethering app with the root.
1) Get z4 app (get it on google, install from SD card - watch for viruses)
2) Get Barnacle Free from android market. Install and run once your Android is temp rooted with z4.
Boom - - got your hotspot
Z4 is just a front end for SU app but gives you two buttons (Temp and Perm root options). If you are competent you can just get the superuser app and do it yourself
i turned my phone into a hotspot with superbox but cannot figure the password can someone tell me what the default might be
sorry i see no way to delete posts so im editing
Hey people,
I've been trying for a while now to root my sister's Intercept (virgin mobile). I've looked all over the place and no method seems to work. Does anyone know of a way to do it?
I've tried:
z4root apk (said phone is rooted but su wasn't installed and all other apps said it wasn't, including root checkers)
intercept root apk (same as above)
SuperOneClick (latest version) (stopped in the middle and never completed, always fails)
Gingerbreak apk (just reboots the phone and doesn't do anything)
Any ideas? Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
The intercept root apk worked like cake for me. I would try doing a factory reset then using that apk first thing after rebooting. It doesn't work with FB01 (Sprint) Intercepts after a February 29, 2012 update, but it should still work with EC07 (VM).
This is the one I used: http://intercept-root.googlecode.com/files/InterceptRootV1-35.apk
Once you've used the app once and reboot your phone, open it again and if it worked you should see options to either unroot or install CM01 custom recovery (recommended if you want to flash roms onto it).
Good luck!
Gonna try it out when I get a chance. Thanks!
The z4root dont work on the intercept anymore. and the inerceptroot.apk on my phone would say that it was failed or what not and i would use root apps and they would still work (even without superuser)
I have been using a optimus v but I have an intercept that's rooted with super one click. Its a brand new phone just opened it and runs like crap slow and just tards out. Rooted it to try and fix it still a no go. Any clues

I have the sprint version, interceptroot.apk worked until the latest FB01 update, after that I had to us samsung SWupdater to load customer recovey
Intercept root apk should work with the VM intercept. I recently tried that method on mine, but I had to do it a couple of times before it actually rooted it.

Id just start from scratch and find a stock rom to flash. I used to have a VM intercept for a painful 2 years. Sometimes you just need to start over with a fresh rom.

Its still stock rom never fa
lashed anything on the phone. Its actually started working like a normal intercept. Had it off for about 2 weeks then turned it on recently and works alot better. I'm pretty much using the phone as a play toy seeing what I can change and explore all the files to get a better idea about android. Maybe I can find a way to make the intercept a good phone.e( highly unlikely, since it is an intercept)

Intercept root
i have an intercept from VM and it was easily rooted with interceptroot.apk Google it, a safe copy will be found on sdx-developers website.
this should get you started, make sure you download the file with your phone, click the home button. Next, click the settings button on your phone, go to applications and then in the following menu, go to development and turn on usb debugging and use the back icon, next allow unknown sources in the menu you are now into again, and click the home button yet again.
Make sure you have some sort of file browser, I personally prefer the app "file expert" but others have their own preferences. (you can use any file tools, like: es file explorer(free), file explorer(free and paid), file expert(free and donate versions), root explorer(free and paid verisons). Anyways, go to your sdcard with the file tool, locate the folder called download, and tap the icon that says "intercept-root.apk" make sure its version 1.35!
You should be asked if you'd like to install, select install. *** NOTE: if you have an antivirus on your phone(whats the point?) you'll get a pup warning, it does not mean its a virus, just a Potentially Unwanted Program, which means that you might not want to install just because it will void your warranty.. if you don't mind, JUST IGNORE! ****
next, you will have a few options, might I suggest permanent root so you don't have to keep rooting your device, it will also have other options and install a handy icon inside your applications menu screen for safe keeping!
You should be all good to go, to find out, go to the google play store and download a program thats free called "root checker basic" It will let you know if your good to go or not.
That concludes the fast off the top of my head tutorial! happy rooting!
*** Update ***
This intercept root apk file also has the option to install the CM01 recovery mod (flash) if your into modding or wanting to flash the phone to a new network sometime (why????) you might want to use this too, make sure to read up on it, I personally have not done it and choose not to, at least yet.. This is important if you want to install roms, kernels (like crappy-kernel) and opens more features to your phone, but can render it into a paper weight if your not careful and PAY ATTENTION!
hope this helps everyone.
