Storing and Running apps from SD Card - EVO 4G General

How do I "properly" do this? Is it the option on ROM Manager where it says "partition SD Card? or is there another way I am suppose to do it.....? Please help...My phone is getting bogged down or held back because I am using too much memory on the phone. Thanks, Ratmuscle

Depends if your rom supports it & of course you have an ext 3/4 partition, if all is good go get you apps2sd, for me on the evio rom it can be enabled in spare parts...
Or go to settings/applications & you can move some of them to the sd, you should see the option there if the app supports it, in froyo.

when you connect to pc via usb cable choose disc drive on phone and wait for pop up
you can then put apk files onto sd card then disconnect and navigate to apk with file explorer, open and install,
you will also have to check unknown sources in applications settings
If you are using normal froyo app2sd. Settings > applications > manage applications > go to an app and pick move to sd.
But are apps in SD slower than apps in phone?
If you have a slow sd card and the app has to support froyo app to sd

Since all the apps cant be installed to sd card, therefore i recommend you download "app2sd enabler" from the market. after downloading it, just go to settings>applications>manage applications. and you can move you desired apps to sd card.
I have done it with the following tutorial

I just told you, read my post above... if you have an ext partition and app2ext enabled, they move auto to your sd, you need to darktremmor for this.

Applications which do not have support must be installed to phone first and then have to moved to SD card through Application Manager.

[Q] HOW TO INSTALL ANDROID APPS TO MicroSD CARD, INSTEAD TO PHONE MEMORY?

OK..I've done everything, installed DFT Android ROM for HTC LEO etc...everything seems to be working fine, BUT..((
Most of the apps from Market or any other cannot be moved from Phone memory to SD card, thus consuming all phone memory very fast, and disabling me to install any more apps...and we all know that Android rules just because there are so many apps for it...
So, my question is: is there any possible way of making Android install apps to SD card, rather then phone memory? 'Cause this way, my 16Gig card isn't much of use on Android )
Please help, because there is no point in having Android on this device, if I can install only so many apps on phone memory...
Very thankful in advance....
Greeting from remote Bosnia ))
Which Rom are you using?
I am using Hyperdroid and it allows me to move apps to SD.
And they are working fine.
I'm using Desire ROM...from DFT 2.2 Froyo..
And this one also allows moving apps, but just some, not all.....
Could anyone be as kind as to point me to a ROM with Sense that allows moving all apps to SD card?

The best method would be to create an ext partition for your phone. ALL the apps that would normally installed on the phone will be moved onto this partition on your SDcard, saving you space. However, the trade off is speed. It will be slightly slower, but I don't think you'll even notice the speed difference day-to-day.
You can follow my guide here on how to make an ext partition without losing your data on your SDcard. It should only take like 5min to do. [HOW-TO] Make Ext4 from Recovery Without Losing FAT32 Data
well, there are some apps on the market that allows u to move all the installed apps in the internal memory to the storage card.
Try App 2SD Enabler. When you run the app, be sure to read the instructions.
If that doesnt work, Titanium Backup has a function in it that allows you to move any installed app u want from internal to storage memory (when u open the app, press Menu and then Batch. There should be an option somewhere there)
edit: keep in mind that some apps such as widgets, have to be on the internal memory to work properly. The Ext4 method is good if u want to increase the internal memory (by sacrifasing some storage memory), but you won't be able to connect your phone to the pc via Mass Storage. Plus, if it's the method with the 3 partitions(tbh i don't know if it's just for the 3partition method or any partition number), some of the storage card will be used from the OS as well, making the removal of the SD card impossible.
I would recommend App 2 SD. I use it to move all the apps it can to the SD card and it really does free up a lot of space.
Does Titanium Backup allow all apps to be moved too SD card? Just curious because Apps2SD doesnt move all apps to the SD card just some of them from my experience..

The original DFT Desire ROM wasnt rooted correctly so use Z4Root from market then try using apps like Titanium and App2SD etc etc.
As an alternative, if you like sense but without all the bloat and lag try the rom in my signature, its a stripped down version oh DesireHD it flies like **** of stick and has all the best bits of sense
Try a different ROM
The DFT rom was also my first, but the internal memory filled up in no time and made it unusable for me.
In my experience, if you move an app to the SD card, some residual data goes onto the internal memory so you will find that you still use it up. As mentioned above, you will need to put certain apps and all widgets on the internal memory anyway.
I would go for a 'clean' rom that gives you plenty of free memory. You should then have no problem with it filling up. Titanium backup (free from market) is a good app, although Apps2SD (also free) is good as it lets you know how much space you have left.
I settled on the prj rom in my signature as it gives 180Mb free space from install and everything works as it is based on the DFT rom with minimal tweaks. There are plenty of clean roms out there, so try some out.
The best solution really for EU HD2's (512MB) is to use a rom that supports Data2SD as that actually extends your internal memory to the partition on SD card so you have say 1GB of internal memory, this is much better then any other current methods as its much more compatible with apps.
Also, dont mess about with Gpartid or other partition apps, You can use CWR to do it, just partition 1GB and then choose 0 for swap. (unless told otherwise by dev).
Thanks everyone, really...
I did this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931126
Partitioned the card during setup and now I have 1Gig, which is OK..also the ROM is really stable and fast.... Try this, I'm quite happy, it works great and it is an upgraded version of DFT Desire ROM... Cheers!!!

[Q] Apps on sd

Ok I've got a stupid question but havent stumbled across the answer yet... HTC Aria, I've found plenty of info that says you can move apps over to the sd card to free up phone memory but I cant find the option to do this. I've gone through the settings menu, gone to the apps, but there is no button to 'move to sd'. Do I need to upgrade this phone to 2.2 in order to do this?
Personally I'm using the Samsung Captivate loaded with 2.2 and have no problems moving apps over to the card. Even apps that are 'apps2sd' enabled dont have the option to move on the Aria, apps that I was able to move around on my Captivate dont show the option on the htc.
Rooting and custom roms are not an issue for the user, they just keep getting 'out of memory' messages and asked me to fix the phone. The only downside to loading the official 2.2 update is the fact that all data is lost but I do have some spare time to reload everything - I just dont want to waste my time downloading and running the update if it still wont let me move apps over to the sd card. Thanks for the help
Android's built-in support for moving some applications to the SD card (apps2sd) requires Froyo (2.2), so that is why you aren't seeing the option. It is supported in the official 2.2 update for the Aria.
Those of us here don't like to recommend updating to the official 2.2 release because it makes it impossible to root your phone or install custom ROMs at a later point in time. There are a few custom ROMs available on this forum that can give you 2.2 Sense on the phone with things like sideloading and free tethering enabled, and most of the AT&T preloaded apps removed. However if you're OK with AT&T's limitations and don't have a problem not being able to use custom ROMs, then that's your prerogative.

not with the built in a2sd. but if you create an ext2 or ext3 partition on your sd card you can use the s2e app from the market to move apps to the sd card and still use your widgets.

Just to clarify (and potentially save someone some trouble), S2E only works with ext3, not ext2.
Also S2E only works with CM7, don't try it with any other ROMs!

rom memory

I own a hd2 with the lates nand hyperdroid rom, and a a2sd partition on my 16 gig sd card.
Now, my phone's memory is full at the moment. I cant even update my current apps due to low memory. So I deleted 5 apps worth of 4 mb. However i can't still update for example the shazam app, which is a 1,5 mb upgrade.
Now, my questions are.
1. If I delete 4 mb worth of apps, why can't I still update the shazam app? 4-1,5 would mean I have 2,5 mb left, right?
2. Second, how can updating apps cost so much memory. Sometimes I need to deleted a few apps in order to update some apps to the newest version. I assumed a new app version wouldn't cost a lot of extra memory.
3. in titanium backup I see there is 28,9 of system rom, 26,3 of internal memory and 800 mb of a2sd left. How come it says memory is full?4
4. Is there a solution to installing more apps?
I'm sorry if my questions are a bit vage, but it's just frustrating that I cannot install the apps I want.

try going into settings and than applications than manage it should show you a list under downloaded. go into some of your apps you downloaded not widgets or important things that you use like button savior cause they wont wont when on sd card. youll see an option to move to sd card move it wait for it to say move to phone than its complete do that to a couple of apps then try to update the app, but take shazaam out of sd card if its there then try to upgrade it if it doesnt work. or back up all your apps than reflash.

Hi,
I noticed when I moved apps to my sd card using SuperBox,that it moved the app,but left the data on the phone.
If you have apps with large amounts of data(saves, etc.),these will be causing your problem.
Try using root Explorer or something similar and look into the cache folder. Apk files that you download from market are saved there sometimes. You can delete them there. You also can move your dalvik to sdext. Easiest way is a2sdgui.

Yup... I usually back it up on my computer and format the sd card periodically. Especially whenever I go on a rom flashing marathon. Just keep the "meat and potatoes" apps close by like Gapps, kernel manager, market, Rom manager, and Titanium.
