That's a hilarious assumption considering that as soon as you plug the phone in with a USB cable, the last option that pops on the screen is for tethering. At least for a Virgin Mobile HTC Legend.

But I wanted to do reverse tethering.
please star this issue to solve this problem in future version of android.

I've found out the same thing today with my new Legend. My old HTC Diamond had this (an I presume all other WinMo devices), it's a pity newer devices like Legend don't.
I presume this is more a limitation of Android than a limitation of the device itself. If someone get a way of doing it, please share.
Another story is synchronizing e-mails with Outlook via USB cable. The setup of an Exchange ActiveSync account failed for various reasons (this is not the issue) and I would like to have the "old" USB sync back as it was on Diamond or other WinMo devices. It this also not possible?
the problem is not with Android itself, but with the Windows, which cannot route netwrok traffic into USB pport.
Linux on the other hand can and there is solution /showpost.php?p=5050462&postcount=5. So I guess Google has nothing to do with this
I was able to do it this summer using the program, Connectify.
From my laptop to my Legend. Hope that helps.
I was just going to say I'm sure it's possible since Windows Mobile does it by default through the device center.. but I would imagine you need different software for an Android phone.
I would look into Connectify as the person above mentioned. Also you could probably setup a computer to broadcast its connection through wifi to your phone (which is the impression I get from the google results for Connectify)
It looks like this was added in froyo or htc sense 2 as i have it on my desire z now

Running CyanogenMod nightly (based on Froyo) and there nothing's added to it regarding this. Maybe it's a HTC addon (from Sense 2) if you have it on Desire...or they have this activated for newer devices.
Connectify allows your mobile to browse the net through your PC's Internet connection, by creating an ad-hoc WI-FI network to which your phone can connect. This is useless if your Internet connection is already through WI-FI. You cannot have the Internet connection AND the hot-spot working in the same time using the same WI-FI card...at least I couldn't make it work.

is there any way through which i can use my adsl internet from my pc to my htc hero
please help
If I was at my PC, I'd use my PC for the internet!
But hey, horses for courses eh.
No its not something I've heard anyone mention before. I take it you don't have WiFi then?
May be worth investing.
looking at HTCs website - does this work?

From my understanding he wants to do the opposite,... The hTC link is to use your phones data connection to connect your PC to internet,... I think they want to use their PC's internet connection to be able to surf on the phone?
ahh okay, my bad.
if the pc has a wireless card but the router isn't, you can set up an ad-hoc wireless network - but thats not something I have done on my hero, only with my elfs.
I'll have a look and see what I can find on my lunch break

OK,... So what CaptainStu says might be possible,... try to do a little research yourself if you can and post back what you find,... Just to save CaptainStu some legwork.
done a bit of googling on my lunch -
http://android.modaco.com/content/t...704/reverse-tethering-and-the-t-mobile-pulse/ post 9 may be of use - but I don't know if you are using a Linux PC. I haven't tried myself, but it is interesting to see what can happen.

I'm used to surf and download to my windows phone through bluetooth using the internet on my computer. I't can't be done with my new android phone?
I dont see why Android would want to waste their time with such inferior methods. 3G is faster than bluetooth. But WiFi is the option to choose.
I need this feature too.
I think the OP wants his laptop as the access point....not his phone (tethering). This can be done with WinMo phones. It is useful in places where there is no free WiFi....like in my workplace we only use LAN with our laptops. Whenever I connect my Desire to my laptop via USB or BT, I hope I could then update weather and download and install apps on my HTC Desire using my laptop's internet connection.
The only way to do it without some root bluetooth hacking would be broadcasting wifi from your laptop. Mac OS has this built-in in the sharing preference pane, Windows can do it but there are a few more steps. Nothing hard.
Thierry Parent has put up a working solution here ...

Worked great for me !
Cheers,
Vikram.
Im running sense 3.0 3d ..its got options to do that once u plug in a USB cable

i agree with mhotspot
Droid Wireless Tethering
Google a program called gingersnap. it works. It gives super user rights. Be carefull your data usage will be high. Make sure you have unlimited data. you will also need to download a wifi tether program
hi every body. i've just bought new T-mobile and i tried alot of adroid verson ( matt, SC...) but i cant share internet from my laptop to hd2 by usb connection ( i'm using HTC sync)..
i want to do this..please help me...
thanks all..
I dont know what happen but when ppp went live usb tethering stopped working. Everyone uses wifi tether now.
Your laptop doesnt have wifi?
I asked a similar question sometime ago, please check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=772244
The conclusion was: if you want to use your laptop's internet on the HD2 (in some kind of reverse tethering), the best is to use a software like VirtualRouter or Connectify to make an Acess Point from your wifi card that your HD2 can easily connect to. I am sorry, but there's not an easy USB solution like you have for Windows Mobile. I hope one day they to it, though.
You shouldnt need any special extra software. It just might be something that doesnt work in the kernal at the moment.
Native android devices can do it aslong as they are rooted.
Lets not say it isnt possible as that makes android sound gimp
My problem is: in my room..wifi is only enough for my lap ( HD2 can connect the wifi but because the wifi signal too weak...) and i'm using internet in my lap by wifi...so i cant using wifi tethering...hic....any solution??
Try WiFi internet sharing in Windows from your laptop.

when i using internet in my lap by wifi , how can i still using my wifi in my lap to share to my android HD2??
The HDSense builds are quite good in this job, with only one touch you can have access to your desktop internet on your android device with a USB cable. However, on other builds there's no option like that (that i know of). So my question is: is this type of connection possible between a pc and a non-sense build of android (via USB cable), especially on Cyanomod builds.
I want to know this because I dont have a Wifi router installed. Also when I try a different Android ROM I always sync my Gmail with the phone, and on 3G speeds its a bit slow.

That's why I gave a link to my thread that shows the "Wired Tether" link for download. He clearly states that he want's internet for his pc without use of a router.
ok.ı am asking you my old question again with my horrible english
.."my wifi is so slow and ı can't download big files for example map data..ı want to use differnt android builds with int.pass thr. not only HD but how?thansk and sorry terrible english"..
No, Ra_han is right, i meant the internet pass through, i dont have a wifi router so i cant use wifi on my phone. Thus i would like to use internet via a usb cable (on my phone, not on my pc)

Have your tried to set up a VPN?
i got this to work and i am using MDJs desire HD froyo build.
i personally am not sure how it all happened as the first time i tried it it didnt work. but i decided to give it another shot and i plugged in my usb cable, device asks me what to do (sync, tether, etc) and i select the internet passthrough option and my windows 7 comp started installing drivers and all of a sudden i could browse via my phone.
sorry i cant give details but it just happened that easily. i also installed htc sync first that was directly downloaded from htc website. i am not sure if that installed any drivers to make this process work. the htc sync program itself doesnt work.
hope my vagueness gives you some leads haha.
Yes, the HD builds have that option, so I would think that there are other programs on the market that can let you do the same without the HD Sense. I tried USB tethering (sharing internet of the phone with the PC) while my connections (pc internet and phone internet) were "bridged". That, I thought, should share pc internet with the phone, but it did not work. Did someone have more luck with that?
i gave up trying to find answer for windows xp,seems to be impossible,my pc sees my hd2 as a composite android device, but thats it,no matter what i have tried,no success, with or without usb tethering engaged, still nothing,so i tried EasyTether from the marketplace, worked first time for me,windows xp and sp3.
I have the T-Mobile (USA) version of the HTC HD2, still with the latest stock ROM, Windows Mobile 6.5.
I think I once read here that the European HD2 came with an app to use the phone's 3G connection as a wi-fi hotspot to tether other devices to. The T-Mobile USA version did not come with that though.
It didn't matter to me before. I have often tethered my laptop to the internet through the phone, but no need for wi-fi for that-- it works fine with USB or Bluetooth. (I usually use the Internet Connection Sharing applet. Occasionally dial-up networking.)
However, curious about IOS apps, and not wanting to change phone carriers and pay high monthly fees to get an Iphone, I just bought an ipod touch 4th generation to play with. It's only kind of internet connection is wi-fi. That will work when one has a wi-fi Internet connection, but one does not have that everywhere. It may have BT to connect to a headset, but I doubt it could tether through the HD2 that way. It might be possible with a couple adapters to connect the USB ports, but I doubt it would tether that way either. (If someone has found a way to do either though, to tether an IOS device through a stock ROM HD2 via BT and/or USB, please let me know.)
However, if I could find a way to make the HD2's 3G connection appear as a wi-fi hotspot, I assume that would work, to tether the Itouch with.
Is there an app I can download for my T-Mobile HD2, to use its 3G connection as a wi-fi hot spot? (Just an app. I do not have time now to deal with putting on a different ROM.) Do you have a link to it? If anyone reading has used the app, could you review how well it works?
Thank you.

Thanks, T.
Since I posted the OP, I discovered the app WMWiFiRouter.
Is this one you link to the same app with a different name, or a different app? If the latter, can anyone compare the two?
Also, since the original (not T-Mo USA) HD2 had a wifi router buoilt in, created by HTC, would that app work better on the HD2? Any way to download and install that to the T-Mo version? (again, without any ROM flashing.)
Doubt Wifi will work as HD2 will be adhoc wifi & ios device will want infrastructure wifi ...
Only way I have managed it is connecting HD2 via Win 7 Notebook (USB tether) then use Connectify on my Notebook to setup a infrastructure wifi hotspot that works with everything.
Amazes me in this day & age & level of development that we still have to jump through hoop after hoop to achieve basic functions.
Really about time the big OS developers pulled their finger out & make functional OS's that connect & share between devices with simplicity.
Amazing how even a Windows device & Windows PC alienate each other ! Microsoft could of really jumped ahead here years ago if had a bit of common sense & innovative development.
I'm sure WP8 will sort it all out ! not :-/

I think it is pretty much the same app as the one you found is actually the one I use to use on my HD2 back when I used Win Mo. But for some reason I could not find it, the app I linked looks just like the one I use to use. Also I think the app you found is just another version of the HTC app.
At Mister B, first it is good to see someone with your expertise in Win Mo still hanging out an helping others, have you ever concidered applying for RC status? Also I had two buddies that use to come over and connect via WiFi off my HD2 with a iPod touch and a iPhone three. So maybe not all of Apple's I products are so stupidly restrained.
Done a google on adhoc & iPhone, seems is possible, never had any luck when I tried but next time I get an iPhone volunteer willing to mess about with settings a bit more I will give it a proper go.
