I've started this thread for the viewing of benchmarks for TMOUS compatible HD2 ROMs.
The benchmark tests were done using SPB Benchmark (freeware) which you can get Here (Thanks to ThaDeanesta)
Benchmark Info:
• All tests have been done on the same device and with the same rules I used with the Topaz benchmarks.
• The list of ROMs in this spreadsheet is not complete, if users find this helpful/useful I will continue to update the new and updated ROMs.
• For the actual benchmark tests (columns H-Z) remember that LOWER NUMBERS ARE BETTER (tests are calculated in milliseconds - 0.001sec) and, at least until the spreadsheet is finished, there is no 'Overall Score'. The spreadsheet should be used only to compare the speed and available RAM of the ROMs.
Spreadsheet Info:
• A link to each ROM thread has been included (column Z).
• Added 'Android Friendly' to Column F (if "Android Compatible/Friendly" is stated in ROM thread).
• Also included 'Free RAM on First Boot' to Column G.
• I had originally made this for my self as a reference so most ROMs currently benchmarked are 23xxx+ builds.
HD2 Benchmarks Spreadsheet
For more info about SPB Benchmark and how to use it take a look here - Topaz 'Official' and 'User Submitted' Benchmarks.
Notice: highlighted/grayed out rows are for test purposes (different ways of initial setup after flash and before the test) and I will leave them up for reference. As of now (Sep 12th) I will be using a combination of tests #1 and #2 (referring to highlighted EnergyROMs). The Hd2 is a very tricky device to accurately bench for speed, but I basically figured it out. This is how:
1 - Flash using flashaholicRUU (task29+flash)
2 - Hard-reset + soft-reset
3 - Install SPB, remove SD, Airplane mode, disable "screen off", disable Sense
4 - Soft-reset and plug into power (let it sit for a minute)
5 - Run test
Please let me know if you want a ROM benchmarked. And if you're a chef and think my results for your ROM are waaaaay off let me know
UPDATE: I have recently finished testing just about all updated ROMs that are TmoUS compatible (including many 21x versions) and will put them on the spreadsheet on Sep 16th. Please let me know if you want anything added.
Oh No not another benchmark thread. LOL Good luck.
Already a question why is it that my test for write 1mb file are 304 and on your test 351?
Maybe you should check your Storage card? Just stating that your numbers are far off from mine with the same test and software.

All devices are different, that's why all tests need to be done on the same device
What steps did you follow for the test? (like airplane mode, was it charging..)
And I didn't leave a storage card in for the tests. Which ROM were you benching?
EDIT: Ok so you are right lol, sorry. For some of the later benched ROMs I didn't realize that since I use a USB hub that is plugged into both the PC and AC, it was causing the device to sync w/ PC via activesync (depending on airplane mode status). I just ran the test for your ROM, Touch of Glass, again and the Write 1mb File came out to 303 .
Thankfully I logged the date each test was taken so I will be re-benching most of the newer releases :/ ..my bad.
For reference, the setup process I use is as follows:
task29 and flash ROM (flashaholicRUU)
hard Reset
move spbbenchmark.cab from sd to device root
remove sd
double soft reset and check free RAM
install SPBbenchmark.cab
turn airplane mode on and plug into AC power
run test. (thankfully the test only takes 5 min, 1/3 of the time it took w/ topaz!)
Awaiting the all new test results so accordingly I shall decide the ROM to put on my baby.

I received you PM, but I'm busy with cooking some new builds at the moment so I don't have time to do them. Glad you got it figured out anyway.
Awaiting the test results for the ones Market in RED.
Finishing them now
Should be up soon.

No hurry, I'd much rather you release new builds than waste your time benchmarking
I think, you should add FREE ROM available.
Please include Stock Roms in the comparison
Great work. Can you please include stock ROMs 2.10.531.1 & 2.13.531.1 in the comparison spreadsheet?

Yeah I had to take some time to figure out how to accurately test ROMs on the Hd2. Not sure if you noticed the highlighted Energy Roms on the sheet, but that (with some other tests) revealed the most accurate way to use SPBbenchmark on the HD2/Leo.
I have a lot of free time for the next few days so I can get almost all of them tested correctly and quickly.

Yes I had noticed the highlighted but mis-understood as an error.
So next few days you will waste your time on this.
The reason I need such stats is At times The ROMs are not as promising as they are shown by the Chef. Thus these data's should help. Further even the Chef can understand after their modding how their ROMs perform.
Yes that's all very true, that's why the numbers have to be accurate
hey dude,
by the time you update this, few other rom's will be out.

Yeah sorry, I had to have someone else test all the Roms on a seperate device to see what differences we could find. I benchmark just about every Rom I flash, which is most of em', so the list wil be updated with the latest releases when finished (Also going to wait for a few more Roms with CHT2.0 built in to be released to get those marks on there as well)

I have started working on an app for Windows Mobile 6 phones w/ GPS to do run/walk/bike tracking like the Nike+. Here is a little Video of the app in action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIqKHCb21cg&feature=channel_page
Version 0.6.5 9s attached
- Smartphone detection is in
- Run Form updated to be smartphone happy, view log is next.
Version 0.6.4 is attached
- Calories burnt calc!!!! (put your weight in...lbs for now...kg coming )
Version 0.6.3 is attached
- 1 Mile/KM kills the app bug fixed!
Version 0.6.2 is attached
- I am not dead! I promise
- This is mostly a maintence update. All the tracking code has been pulled from the views and put off in modules (as it should have been from the get go) so I can get a Smartphone version working soon.
Version 0.6.1 is attached
- Audio updates - new sounds for mile/km passed and distance goal hit
- Audio updates - updates to how the power management is dealt with for audio, still not perfect, but better
- Center button (on your direction pad) now turns the display off and on and also it stops the phone from sleeping when you use that display off method. This is great for phones that get a bit wierd on their GPS in unattended mode.
Version 0.6 is attached
- New internal tracking code to improve performance and make new feature additions easier (this was more about me than you )
- First audible notices. Each mile/km and distance goal hit. It is just a tone right now, but I will record and add voiced stuff tonight.
- New Settings tab for audible notices
- Smartphone users can atleast start the app and track a run now! (still no settings or view log...that is coming)
Version 0.5.9 is attached
- Fix the View/Save log bug (I hope)...you might have to delete your Run Log (yeah for Alpha testing!)
- New way to calculate speed that is more accurate for me. This might depend on what GPS chip your phone uses...try both and see which you like more (change in the Settings Screen)
Version 0.5.8 is attached
- AppToDate bug fix
- Start of true metric support
- little bug fixes
Version 0.5.7 is attached
- I think the String->Date bug is fixed, please let me know!
- Added an "Action" menu under the left soft key for start/stop/save (silly non-touch screen phone users!)
Version 0.5.6 is attached
- EMAIL A RUN!
(that is a horrible name for the feature right now....since it just gives you a link to share...)
http://www.trackmyrun.mobi/viewrun.php?run_id=18&auth_code=5qii4mfy
Version 0.5.5 is attached
- Settings screen is up and working
- Goal progress is based on settings now (not just 3.1 all the time)
- All based on miles still, KM is coming soon fear not!
- Few more bug fixes and exception catches
Version 0.5.3 is attached
- GPS unattended mode updates
- Few bug fixes
- Ignore Calories/Pace, those spots are place holders/debugging right now...they will work in a later release
Version 0.5.1 is attached
- GPS stays up in unattended mode now (screen off by time out or hitting the power button)
- Few little bug fixes
Version 0.5 is attached
- KML support is all in now
- Go to view a lot (has to be a new one) and select View in Google Maps
- Change the line in the KML file to be green since that yellow was hard to see
Version 0.4 is attached.
- Fixed a few of the stupid SubString() bugs
- Added Experimental KML support! (start a run, do some stuff, then go to options->experimental->Build KML). It will put test.kml in your devices root folder
- Working on new speed tracking code, it is far more accurate...but not done yet (so ignore that it has like 900 #'s after the decimal point)
- Ignore what it says for calories burnt...that isn't what you think it is
ENJOY!
Version 0.3 is attached.
Looks good! I would definatly use this app!
Looks impressive. The auditory upgrade feature would be cool to add.
There are similar Apps. One in particular is also cool is:
GPS Cycle Computer v2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424423
How would this calculate calories burned if your activity differs?
i.e. Rollerblading vs. Running vs Cycling, etc.
or is it simply based on time and distance to give a general calculation?
Nice looking app, I will definitely be keeping an eye out for this one. Keep up the good work.
Does this track coordinates? Or does it track via something else? Cause then I'm thinking that you need an active data connection for this to work :|

It tracks coordinates, so no data plan is needed at all for this. Just a working GPS. Now, I plan in the future to have online features for showing your routes on google maps and storing run data online, ect...but that is in the future...

There are some standard formulats that are based on weight, time of exercise and how vigorous the activity is. For walk, jog, run that is easy (since I now your MPH's). For biking, roller blading, ect that gets tougher.
This is looking awesome. Could really do with an App like this. Keep it up and hope your "about a week" estimate is correct for a first beta.
A question though; I have a Touch HD. Has the interface been written to be able to cope with a WVGA resolution?

I have only tested it on a VGA display (my Touch Diamond). I have played with it in the QVGA emulator and the Square VGA emulator. The layout is far from final (I am not happy with it at all right now), so that is in flux a lot.
Go ahead and try the current version if you like:

Please be aware this is a VERY alpha version. There are known bugs that throw exceptions that I don't catch...so be nice
If you do however have any failures or success, please let me know.

AppToDate Support
Could you possibly think about having this AppToDate Support. Since this is in the early stages of development, it would be great to run AppToDate to get the current version. Thanks.
Couldn't wait until I got home so just loaded it up here. Everything seems good until I tried to View Log when it crashes out on me.Unfortunately I don't have NETCFv35.Messages.EN.wm.cab installed installed so cannot view details.
Also +1 for Apptodate support!

Did you start and then stop a run? The log file isn't created until you do atleast one and I bet it is dying trying to read the log file (which doesn't exist yet for you if you didn't do a start/stop)
I will do some reading on AppToDate in a bit, see what all it takes to integrate it.

Yeah I had done and paced about abit; notched up 0.003 miles. Stopped the run successfully and then tried to view the log.
I've just jogged home from a friend's house (1.237 miles). This time when I stopped the run it crashed. No error code or anything; just said I had to quit and restart.
Sorry that's probably not much good for bug finding!

Yeah no problems there. Slight lag on speed changes but I guess that's to be expected/part of the suposed and much debated GPS lag on the HD!
No complaints about performance at all.
I'm really liking the look of the App, certianly looks good so far; will be awesome if/when audio feedback can be given.
Something that would be good is if you could make the data from the logs uploadable to a PC to plot onto a graph (via Excel).
Like I said, great work so far! Loving this, who needs Nike/Apple!

The lag might be that I only update the display every 5 seconds (that is for all data). I think I might update the speed in real time (there is a call back function I can attach to for that). I do have plans for graphing/tracking/mapping in the future via an upload to a website feature...but that is a bit down the road I want to get all the stand alone client features working correctly first!
Please let us know when you have completed a final version. this program will be very useful. I know its still in the early stages hopefully you will be able to find the bugs and get them fixed, so we can download complete version.
I have never used this guy before, but he has this posted.
I thought you might find it interesting.
I'm still waiting for the tmo site.

Indeed, this is a slightly newer version than the one we got a couple weeks ago, and because it says "SHIPPED" on the end it seems legit.

Why don't you get it from XDA. It's been up for some time now.

Maybe someone could post a link to the newer version in english?
A few questions
First, Does this require HSPL? Is this an actual shipped ROM that I can load like when I went from 2.10 to 2.13?
Second, does this change the SPL version? If it does will HSPL3 work on this new SPL?
Installed 3.14 updated on T-Mobile HD2 US
Ok I have a native (and I mean native) T-Mobile HD2 and I just installed:
RUU_Leo_1_5_TMOUS_3.14.531.1_Radio_15.42.50.11U_2.15.50.14_LEO_1.5_Ship.exe
No problems so far and here are some obvious changes:
Shazaam was on the applications list
Smoother transitioning on apps and windows
There are 3-4 background options to choose from that have odd names...not there so i'm not sure if this are code names.
swype seems really smooth..not sure if it got updated but its nice.
i can check hte versions of the default apps like albums, messages, email, pics, etc and see what they are compared to someone who has NOT updated to 3.14

sooo.... to be clear, by "native" you mean you did NOT have to install HSLP to flash the 3.14 ROM?
Correct!
No HSPL needed. Just downloaded the file above, opened it up and it updated my HD2. My HD2 had no HSPL or other hacks done to it.
So far with full day of use, had good battery life (better than before), no freezing or hanging, loaded a ton of photos, music, books on the SD card which used to cause serious lag. I don't see that anymore.
According to hte HTC website, the update improved better usage of the CPU which is now obvious.
I will be installed CHT and some other 3rd party apps tomorrow to see how they run on the HD2. So far, its been an excellent update.
New T-Mobile 3.14 HD2 Update Release Review
After 48 hours of usage, here are a few thoughts on the new HD2 T-Mobile US 3.14 update:
The days of lagging and freezing are over.
Stable..very stable. Did not have 1 crash or freeze and I put intense pressure on the cpu with various appps both running at the same time as well as cpu / memory hungry apps
CHT 1.8 needs to be updated to work on 3.14
Sense UI is wonderful. This is how it was intended to operate.
Email, Music, Photos, MEssages are the same..no real change that I can see.
I would say the HD2 is really a great phone now with this update. Short and sweet.

So CHT doesn't work or won't install? And you're talking about CHT 1.8.5.1 Editor, too?
Ok, so after using Energy ROMs since this phone came out everything worked pretty decently. Recently, I can not get weather in 3G. I read in another thread that T=Mobile is blocking it? Will there be any way around this?
I might go back to stock : (
I have always really hated this phone. I want a full Android solution but I just bought a car.
When using my HD2 I noticed when tethered to my laptop my OpenVPN software sometimes acts as if its blocked. There are other strange internet discrepancies as well so blocking is possible.
The weather on certain roms when using My Location doesnt work. If you add your location manually then I am betting it works. For example on Miri's Rom I noticed Burbank, CA cannot be detected whereas Palmdale, CA will be detected. If I add Burbank manually without using My Location then I get the data. Kwbr's Rom it detects burbank so I am not sure if there is weather databases missing from certain roms?

Curious... your statement is that T-Mobile is blocking data... and you're hating on the HD2??
Data is Data.... if your statement that T-Mobile is blocking the data is true... then it wouldn't matter WHAT phone you were on... Android, WinMo, BB, ect... that data would be blocked...
The HD2 is a wonderful phone... is it perfect? by no means... but which phone is???
all that being said... I've been running the latest Energy ROM and have not had ANY issues with Weather updates... so a few questions:
what build are you running?
what radio?
have you tried a different build &/or Radio?
results?
it's pretty much a given that a stock build will be pretty stable VS a custom build... but the downside is that you lose the cutting edge stuff that is available in the customs. If a specific build/ROM is giving you issues... try a different one and see if the situation improves.
Also... make sure you are using Task29 before you flash... so you don't have residual bugs that could creep in from an old flash.
if you're issues are connection related, try a different radio... see if that solves your issue...
and welcome to the wonderful world of Customizing Electronics! regardless of WHAT you're customizing... there will be bugs... no platform/device is immune
All my info in my signatre is up to date and accurate. I can no longer get weather updates when I am in 3g or better. Its strange. I also cant update Facebook news feed unless I log out and log back in. I am by no means a developer but I have flashed dozens of ROMs and tested almost all Android builds on ths phone. I am very technically inclined and have donated to the Energy developer for his hard work. Every time I flash i do Task29, radio, ROM, then reset. I even tried factory reset this time becauseI never had to try that in the past. there is a legitimate issue and someone specifically did mention that TMO is now blocking certain data. maybe i took this wrong but i figured that they finally figured out how to block users with HSPL users from certain content.
oh btw ryan. when tjis phone came out, Hspl ROMS were way more stable then stock TMO stuff. this phone is just awful. its not the devs fault. its not the hardware. its microsoft. for instance, how many clicks or taps do i need to get 1 stinkin email? like 5! that is so annoying pardon spelling and grammar. im posting from the phone. and everytime i hit space i hit the on screen keyboard buttonand the keya dissappear grrrrrrrrrrrr

Well, like I said... I'm running the latest Energy build (Oct. 8 21681) which means I've got HSPL, and I'm running the recent radio (2.15.50.14) and I haven't had any issue what-so-ever with Data.
I HIGHLY DOUBT TMO is blocking based on HSPL. How could they tell based wireless traffic besides... the only things i've been reading regarding TMO blocking anything have been in regards to text messages.... there is a Data Throttling change coming soon... after 5GB your data connection will be slower till next billing cycle... but that is by no means a block.
As for the rest of your statement.... I only need 1 click for email... don't know WTF you're doing if you need 5 lol
I have NO issues with Microsoft... yes, WinMo6x is an old OS... but it is also the most customizable.... Look at all the UI mods available, all the different themes.... Android, iOS, BB none of those have that... Android is a great OS, but it has it querks too.
Not saying these things to talk you into keeping your phone... hell... I'm sure there are plenty of people on here that would be willing to take it off your hands for you ;p

so wait...when you click on an email mssg you don have to tap "Get the rest of this message?" Than you have to wait for it to DL. Then if there are pictures, you have to tap to DL pics. Then you have to confirm that you want to DL pics. Then you have to tap to scroll to the right. AWEFUL!
I didnt notice the new radio that came out. I thought that we could only use radios that end in _2 in the USA with TMO?
We will see what happens with the latest updates. God I want a phone that works.

TMO radios have to be X.X.50.X
The first stickied thread here is regarding TMO radios
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=669733
as for your email issues.... wonder if there are REG entry settings that could adjust it?... will do some digging
Found a thread on the Touch pro section regarding this....
The following settings make it to where, once you download an image the first time, on an email it will not require you to download it again.
Create the following DWORD keys,
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings
"BlockExternalContent" with a value of 0
"LoadExternalImages" with a value of 1
"AutomaticallyInlineImages" with a value of 1
still looking for some REG setting that will disable the option outright... but this is a step in the right direction.
I also found a setting in the REG for email trunation... if you want that
TMO does block certain ports and can keep certain programs from working correctly or at all, when tethered.
An example I have faced is using Yahoo Messenger on my laptop while tethered. Skype seems to work for me in this case when I need to use a messaging program with webcam functionality.
THank you for your help. I like the REG item you posted.
I have picked up lots of bits of information about how to maximize space issues and maximize battery life for those of us who are in love with these amazing new NAND builds....especially those of us with European HD2 phones who only have 512MB to play with
I have compiled them below for ease of reference - I claim no originiality for these ideas...I am just bringing them together...so MAJOR THANKS TO ALL THOSE OUT THERE! You know who you are...
I have already posted this on the DFT thread as I love that particular build, but they should (might!) work for other builds and I post it here for further reference as it took me a long time to sift through the threads to find it all.
Space
1. Before flashing your phone, using DFT Stock Desire, for example, you can edit the flash.cfg file and change the following line:
cache ya 40M >>to>> cache ya 15M
This reduces the cache by 25M with no discernible impact on the speed of the build (imo).
This should give you in excess of 130MB free after a clean flash on that particular ROM. Expect that to drop to around 100MB once Market, Flash and a couple of other apps update themselves.
Some NAND ROMs will not even have this as an option, and others may look a little different. You can read about how the flash.cfg file is structured here.
2. Immediate install Z4 to root your device. You will need to get it from here. (Note: it may get stuck on 'Rebooting'. Wait a minute or so and then manually reboot - it will work fine and SuperUser will now work after the reboot)
Put it on your SD card and then install a file manager from the Market to browse to it and then install and run. Follow the details on the thread...
3. Install Move2SD. You can get it from the Market. Full details are here.
This allows you to move most (not quite all) apps to SD. It is the best option I have found to move most of those awkward apps.
I have now installed pretty much all of my apps that I used to run on non-NAND builds and have moved about 90%+ of them to the SD card. At time of writing I have loads of apps installed and still have over 70MB free
Battery
1. Install Battery Monitor Widget or Current Widget from the Market so that you have a way of tracking your current usage.
2. Install Set CPU - free for XDA members from here, but also available on the Market.
After setting your Main Screen to 'OnDemand' and 'Set on Boot', assign SetCPU a couple of profiles. I tend to use:
>> Screen Off: Max/Min 245000, Scaling 'OnDemand', Priority 50%
>> Battery <25% Max 384000/Min 245000, Scaling 'OnDemand', Priority 50%
You can play to your hearts content here, but these give me consistently 7ma in Standby.
Also, you can reduced the sampling rate to 20000 and 'Set on Boot' in Advanced if you like.
3. Avoid power hungry background stuff like animated wallpapers and turn off GPS, Wireless etc. There are LOADS of apps out there that can do this automatically for you free from the market, but I have found that making sure my GPS is off (I have a widget to show me) plus SetCPU is plenty. It may work for you though.
4. Some have reported that Darkstone's suggestion makes a major difference to their power consumption:
"To fix high power drain / usage in standby (60mA or 70mA) disable 'Use wireless networks' in Settings>Location menu. You will now get 7mA or less constantly. I discovered this as the main culprit last night. Also works in other builds."
Anyway, there you go - a few consolidated thoughts - happy NANDing!

Have changed it as you correctly point out - thanks.
Hi everyone.
Id like to start a thread where we collect, post and discuss all known individual tweaks and changes that can be made to the Galaxy Tab in order to gain performance and stability.
My experience with the Galaxy Tab has been similar to my latest phone, an HTC HD2. When I got the HD2 about one year ago, I positively hated it... slow, unstable, all sorts of problems, lags, crashes... its the way most of the hardware today is released. One year later, my HD2 has become the most amazing machine I've ever owned. From pushing it 1.6GHz stable, to tweaking registry, XML files, services and making everything work well. I remember not being able to watch smooth video on the HD2 to being able to watch flawlessly 720p content and going from the extreme of detesting the phone to loving it.
It was with the HD2 I discovered Android and fell in love with it. Since I have now two HD2s I have one with an SD ROM version of Gingerbread (that I can dual boot still from Windows Mobile) and a Froyo NAND. I run Android on the HD2 much much much faster and smoother than on the Galaxy Tab, that I also hated when I bought it a few weeks and that am starting to like after getting to know it, a new ROM, apps, etc. Even at 1GHz stock the HD2 with Froyo is vastly faster, smoother, more responsive and better to use. The approach d like to do as far as tweaking the Galaxy Tab is the same as I did for the HD2 with Windows Mobile, that is, install the best/fastest ROM I can, delete and remove all stuff I don't need and then tweak what's left.
The tweaks I've done so far on the Galaxy are simple but have made a huge difference. Id like with this thread to be able to collect individual tweaks and post them all here to share with everyone.
Im using Roto JMI Pre-Rooted Firmware v2 which was the main step after getting rid of the stock Samsung Rom that is nothing but a collection of problems.
The first thing I learned with this Tab is that WHATEVER IS ON YOUR HOME SCREENS THAT MOVES, IS BAD! Forget about having ANY type of apps or widgets that do any type of refresh, including stuff running on the upper task bar if they change icons or the move around… that mean a CPU cycle and refresh each time and there goes the tab's performance and battery life. The same goes for any type of Live Wallpaper. Beautiful but deadly. Never touch them!
- So, after a new ROM, the first thing I did was changing the file system to EXT4. This is the SINGLE BEST THING you can do to radically improve the performance of the Tab. Its extremely easy to do and the step-by-step instructions are as follow:
- Make sure you have an miniSD Card in with plenty of available space (it will be used automatically to backup your system during the conversion process)
- Get p1000-mck-r3-ext4-cwm.tar (the EXT4 Conversion Kernel)
- Connect the Tab in Downloading Mode to your PC via USB, start Odin3 1.7 and load the Kernel (click on the PDA button and select the p1000-mck-r3-ext4-cwm.tar and make sure PDA stays ticked after selecting the file).
- UNTICK Re-Partition check box and make sure the only boxes ticked are:
Auto Reboot
F. Reset Time
The PDA tickbox
- Click start and wait for PASS! (it will show highlighted green or Yellow on Odin)
- Now the Tab will restart and get stuck on the Samsung loading screen. This is normal. Turn it off by holding the power button for 5 seconds.
- Turn on the Tab again on into RECOVERY mode (Press Volume UP and Power On at the same time) and the EXT4 conversion will start automatically. The process will take up to one hour depending on how much stuff you have on your Tab. It took about 10 minutes on mine because I have a fresh install of Roto JMI v2.
- Once finished, click "Reboot System Now" (by pressing the power button).
- The reboot may take a while first time so be patient!
- Done!
- After that, the first tweak I did was to get rid of all my favorite widgets that moved around… net meter, news, weather and all these beautiful things KILL the Tab. Equally I had a CPU meter on the tray refreshing every 2 seconds and it took me a while to figure out that was the reason why every 2 seconds the system would stutter, whether watching a movie or browsing the web. So, out!
- Next was to install SetCPU under the ON DEMAND setting, minimum around 750MHz and maximum 1000MHz (unfortunately only with a custom Kernel you can go higher, currently up to 1.4GHz but not full stable and with lots of issues pending so I don’t recommend it)
- My following step was to get rid of the stock Samsung Homescreen (that is a resource hog and slow as hell) and replace it with a new one. I've tried them all and am making no recommendation here but the one that works for me and is by far the best IMO is LauncherPro. This single app makes using the Tab a whole better experience.
- Next was to disable the USELESS and (resource pig) Gallery and replace it with an app called QuickPic that is blazing fast (actually instant) and simply amazing to browse and view all media on the Tab.
- Next was to greatly improve the poor native GPS reception by replacing high performance files and drivers from the Orange Rom P1000JHKA1 that seems to work on all versions of the Tab, as originally posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922692
- With SystemApp Remover 4.12 I have disabled all system apps and services I don’t need (BE VERY CAREFUL AND DON'T REMOVE ROM APPS YOU WILL NEED). I have actually deleted some from ROM (Root access required of course), this includes useless stuff like STK Service starting every time, most of the Samsung stuff that I really don’t care for and just about all apps I know for sure I will never open a single time. Now, its important to understand if these apps are removed they will be removed PERMANENTLY from ROM so to get the back a hard reset will not be enough, you'll have to fully flash the ROM again. For most system apps I don’t use but am not sure, I use a different option and that is to simply disable them. In my case this includes all Bluetooth stuff (I never use it and even if it's off the Services are still running robbing performance and memory) and apps like the built-in Browser, Email and Messaging that suck and that I replaced with better apps. Its always a safer bet, at least initially to disable the apps you don’t need that uninstall them because at least you can go back and change your mind This is one area where Id like to learn more. There are many background services that I don’t know what they do and if they can be disabled or not. If someone knows what each one does and the safety of getting rid of them OR NOT, it would be great to post it here!
- Them, with Startup Auditor 2.3.2 I have disabled all unnecessary apps that start automatically every time the Tab boots so I don't have excess applications starting up that are not needed. Some I configured to be killed AGAIN if the system tries to restart them later after the boot-up
- Using Task Manager 1.0.7 and letting always run on background, I have configured all apps that I don’t need running to be auto-killed every time the phone goes to stand-by (screen off). This saves me lots of memory and CPU time on apps that I am actually not using.
- Finally, I monitor what is going on with an app called CPU Usage Timeliness Free 1.7.1.0 and use it to see EXACTLY which applications are using CPU cycles and interfering with performance. With it I have found that on my Tab I have an unsolved problem that is using over 100MB of memory and non-stop CPU usage between 15% and 45% of something called SECURITY STORAGE. I have no idea what it does. It can't be disabled and I don’t know where all the activity comes from. If someone know more about this and how to fix it, that will be great. Most of the performance issues I have on my Tab come from this Service that I don’t know how to tame. Surely, we can find a solution.
The system background services is one area where I'd like to know one by one, what each service does and if we need them or not, if it can be tweaked, disabled or deleted. Below is a complete list of the services I have safely disabled so far that have given me great performance boosts and with no negative issues on the system (IN BOLD), and OTHERS I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT (not bold). Please note these are background services that start automatically. The changes made to the disabled apps/services is that they are reverted to ON-DEMAND so they all still work perfectly.

But id like this to be a starting point to learn and share more ways with everyone we can all share on things we can do to make the Tab as good as it was intended to be for everyone
Cheers!

The first block of disabled items (in bold) from CALENDAR to WORLD CLOCK are disabled start-ups but the apps works as usual. It just frees resources not required on boot till you actually start the application when you want.
The second block from Bluetooth Services to Voice Search are all disabled as I use none of those. Items disabled can be restarted again at any time upon activating them follwing a reboot, while items deleted (like Samsung Apps and STK) are gone forever.
Ive never flashed a ModaCo Kernel and got lots of feedback regarding probelms with 1.4OC. Do you have any issues at all or none? We are using different ROMs... What Quadrant do you get currently?
Cheers
Thank you for your post.
You have solved many of my questions. Also I am User of HD2 and had the same impressions, but now with Android Nand everything was great, also started to love it.
As for GTAB'll make those adjustments you suggested, some will not disable because I use Bluetooth as an example.
Any news please keep posting.
Success!

So far the oc is good, things load a little faster, especially nfs shift. Last run of quadrant was 2300-2400.
Ill try it again later after these optimizations and see how it goes, a member here has gotten 3000.
Having done nothing but root, my tab gets about 1000 quadrant score. I have tried setcpu using on demand and it actuall has made my tab worse. I am very hesitant to flash anything on the tab. It seems very involved and complicated. I have an HD2 as well and have been flashing since Android was on SD. That process is simple. Everything I have read about flashing things to the tab doesn't look that way. I really havent had any issues with my tab as stock other than a bit laggy at times. I would like to hear more about all of this. The oppinions I have read are either do it or don't do it. There are more problem posts after attempting to flash than there are good ones where it worked. I really could care less about a quadrant score to be honest, but I would like to have a faster smoother running tab. I really dont care about making calls on it either. Thats why I have a phone. JMO. I think part of the issue in this thread is that there are Euro and USA version which are completely different and require different roms and such.
I have been reading and lurking in the tab development thread for a while now and am not impressed with any of it yet. Maybe someone could shed some light on things and change my mind.

I agree. The process of flashing the Galaxy is much more dauting than anything on the HD2. I suggest you do the EXT4 file converstion. All you need is follow the step by step I wrote above. It makes a huge difference. As for everything else, I too hold off to do too much flashing. The ROM I use now is great and lighter than stock but your seems to work well so keep it. For me when a ROM is good I just use it. When I bought the HD2 I flashed it 2 times with a custom ROM till i found one that worked for me and kept it for 8 months. But backing up and restoring WinMo is much easier... on Androind its all more complicated if you dont know what you are doing. Disable some start-ups on your unit, convert the file system to EXT4 and make sure you have nothing on your home screen doing a lot of refreshing and your tab will work great

Is everything working 100% on that ROM? I do not want any ROMS that are having problems.
I too am not impressed with anything that us out yet...seems like any ROM process is tedious and complicated.
Glad the thread starter modified his tab to his liking, but what's the point of having it if you need to drastically change everything. I have a rooted DInc and not use any of things......didn't really see a performance gain with set CPU.
I'm going to continue waiting for something more reliable and use my tab the way it was meant to be, with all its hardware and widgets.

My boy,
Only getting my Galaxy tomorrow but looking through threads on my favorite forum.
And guess the first one I happen into... I will follow avidly.
Hi dubie76,
Try an app called OCLF 2.0 on the Market. It is a Lag fix app for the Samsung Galaxy S which also works on the Tab.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rc.QuickFixLagFixR2
You have to install EXT2 tools and then install one click lag fix, both are done within the app.
I had this on my Tab before flashed to a custom ROM. The tab was much faster and did not have and lag compared to stock, the Quadrant score was around 1900.
Also you can uninstall the modifications in the app and easily reverse back to stock. The only disadvantage is you will loss about 800mb of internal memory (the 2Gb space), so if you don't have much space left, you will need to uninstall some apps and reinstall them once you applied the lag fix.
P.S. thanks to OP for the SystemApp Remover & Startup Auditor suggestion.
Custom ROMs?
Hi everyone!
Consider this:
The locked GTab (in standby) on an original ROM with a connected to it BT headset wakes up after replying a call from BT and can potentially have anything pressed as being in the bag due to its size...
My point is that there is NO fix for this on XDA therefore why should I expect any significant advancements from a custom ROM if such simple things cannot be fixed on Android.
My personal view is that Android is unfortunatelly not as flexible for adjustments as WinMo (i have HD2 as well with a wonderful custom Artemis ROM).
I've tried two Roto ROMs on my GT and they havent provided any noticeable enhancements in performance to my eye (perhaps some rating went up - I dont care about tech stats). I reverted to stock ROM P1000XWJMI that works as fast for a "regular user".
I am sad to resume my experience with hacking the GT as not worth it: you get serious risk of getting the GT bricked (much more complicated than with WinMo), loose the warranty and are open for instability and sudden incompatibilities with crashes.
On the third custom ROM installation attempt I was stuck on a black screen after powering on (stuck on the bootloader!) and couldnt initiate flash for multiple times. I was shocked and very nervous. Thats when the stock ROM saved my ass and I am not willing the risk of playing around any more with non-firmware ROMs for Android GT.
Regarding the alternative screen lockers available - please do not suggest Screen Suite (the best of the worst) and things like No-Lock (to get rid of the original locker) as they all mess up once in a while (tested) with the default ROM settings and the original core locker.
PS
In my view the best thing we can and should do first of all is to COMPLAIN to SAMSUNG Tech Support and Software Developers (I did twice already).
If every one of us from theese GTab forums would do this they would definitely get faster with resolving issues.

Hi everyone!
Consider this:
The locked GTab (in standby) on an original ROM with a connected to it BT headset wakes up after replying a call from BT and can potentially have anything pressed as being in the bag due to its size...
