Hi,
I want to first start by saying I really like my phone. I came from a Iphone 3G and just love the fact the SGS is so easily customisable and I can have widgets etc on my home screen.
Now to the things I don't like and if anyone can help I'd most appreciate it.
1) Samsung Kies. No matter what I try I can't get my phone to connect to Kies. When I first installed Kies it connected fine etc, but now I either get the mtp screen crashing or it just says connecting device and won't go any further.
I have tried solutions such as formatting my internal sd card, removing cache but nothing seems to work
2) GPS. I'm not sure I even have GPS. I can go into maps and it can pinpoint my location. However if I go to Google Nav it plans the route but then just says searching for GPS and doesn't get any further. I used to get a satellite symbol at the top of the phone sometimes but I don't even get that anymore.
3) Lag. Opening aps etc is fine, but if anyone calls me or I get a text, the phone wakes up and then takes about 5 seconds sometimes longer to either show a text message or show that someone is calling me so I can answer.
If anyone can help with these problems I'll be extremely happy. I'd like to try to upgrade to the latest version of the SGS software via Kies as it may solve some of the above problems but I can't connect to Kies.
Thanks for reading and any advice would be great.
Someone mentioned before about turning off haptic feedback, as it seems the phone takes a short time to kick the motor into action before it does whatever on screen (menu/keyboard/etc). I tried this and it does seem more responsive, so might be worth turning phone vibrate off. Not an ideal situation, but might be less annoying than waiting for the screen to respond when a call/text arrives.
As for GPS, have you accidentally turned it off? there's an option to disable it entirely, in which case any navigation apps would use phone mast triangulation.
KIES... *ugh* don't get me started on that, I had to re-install as the update didn't work, then had to reboot my machine a few times, turn off Launcher Pro, launch KIES manually and then it would work. I now only rely on it for firmware updates, it's useless for everything else.
I don't have vibrate on, is there another way I can turn off haptic feedback?
Also re turning off GPS? do you mean the use gps satellites in my location sources as that is turned on.
Yeah kies drives me up the wall. I just don't understand why I can't get it to sync. It recognises it in other modes just not samsung Kies mode.

1) top left hand corner of the kies application, there is a drop down which allows you to reover drivers, (or words to that effect). Try that. If it does'nt work. Locate and donwload the package of USB drivers, install and try again. if it doesnt work, recove drivers via kies again and it should work, it did for me.

Haptic feedback is under Sound and Display near the bottom of the list.
If you already have vibrate turned off for calls, not sure what the problem is then, sorry.
So you have use satellites ticked but the icon still doesn't show? go onto the marketplace and download the GPS test application, it's free and will show you your satellite signal strength, how many you can connect to, etc. If it doesn't lock onto any (while outside, not in a built up area with skyscrapers, or whatever) there might be a problem with your phone and you need to get it replaced.
yeah it seems I don't get any satellites. I used to but it seems my gps has just stopped working.
I'll try and call O2 business to see what they say.

Which firmware you using.. On mine, it happened on European JG1 -> JG5 firmware.. But all other firmware was fine
Is that my baseband version?
If so its I90000ADJF1
Re the satellites, yeah even after I reboot the phone.
I had GPS test on the phone before and used to get up to 8 I think, last night I got two when I left it on GPS test for a while, but even going outside today I get none. It says accuracny is 318.2 feet.
But it says 0 in view and 0 in use.

JF1 is ancient (it's from June). Check on Kies if there is an update available.
get the newest firmware possible
if that doesn't fix it, exchange your phone for a working one

my phone does not connect to att or the internet. it looks and looks for signal but it will never work unless i plug my phone onto my computer and sync it through activesync. after leaving it plugged in my phone will find signal and i can unplug the phone and work it regularly. this is a problem cause if i turn my phone off its done.. i wont be able to get it working after i turn it back on unless i stop at home and fix it which is a pain when I travel and have to turn my phone off before a flight.
when i turn on the phone it will say i am missing the file " and i will not work properly.. etc..etc i dunno if that has anything to do with my problem
Try a Soft reset or Hard Reset, hope it'll work.
Cheers!
neither worked

hmmmm,
You'll perhaps have to reflash it again, download official stock rom of your provider from its website and flash.ok
cheers!
anything??
well i have the nbd touchflo or whatever installed on mine and i have hard reset it a couple times.. reinstalled the software as well. usually when there are no programs it turns on and finds the signal. even when i do install programs it will work maybe the next 2 or 3 times i turn it off or soft reset it. then after that.. it never finds signal after turning on it needs a computer. this is really a hassle for traveling or if the battery drops out. sometimes it might even just lose signal for no reason. maybe im not doing something right.. is there a setting that needs to be changed once the phone screws up and doesnt find signal?
is it possible that if too many things are runnning it will not be able to find signal. right after turning it on i used the taskmanager to shut off ilock and s2u2 and then it shortly finds signal afterwards. sometimes it does att and sometimes it finds cingular. if it finds cingular the phone does not work and it says that the phone is off even though in the comm manager it is on. i just reset it and try again..
and whats the diff between the G (gprs) and E (medianet edge)? the phone never really works when it is doing G and when it tries to find signal when turning on the phone, sometimes (couple seconds) it will show some signal (calls still cant be made) with the G logo then eventually lose it.
So my G1 can't find my location via GPS no matter where I am. I am standing in the middle of a soccer field and it is "your location temporarily unavailable." So I installed GPS status from the market and it is showing that 0 satellites.
I am using JF 1.51, radio 2-22-19-26I, and the DEV SPL(the one with androids on skateboards). Anyone have this problem or know a way to fix it? This has been going on for a few days so it's not a satellite problem. It is phone related. If more info is needed from me I will do my best to get it to you.
Thing I have tried(updated last 16 JUN 2009 12:18 PM -6:00GMT)
-Toggle GPS on and off
-Reboot
-Combination of the above two multiple times
-device wipe(alt-w) and re-flash the JF1.51 ROM
-Toggles and reboots again
-wait for more ideas from you guys
Now I tried installing the dudes cupcake(awesome by the way) but GPS still doesn't work. It picked up one satellite for a couple seconds then it disappeared to 0 again.
Try toggling GPS off then back on. Maybe reboot the device too.

Tried that. No dice. I will edit my original post to include things I have tried.
Did you try waiting a few minutes with GPS status ?
At some point my GPS was very very slow to get a lock.

I let it run all night(6 hours). Still reading 0 satelites.
Update. Got one satellite to show up for a couple seconds then it disappeared. This is after I wiped and installed the dude's latest rom. Still getting 0 satellites in GPS Status and no location on my maps. I have tried the old and updated google maps.

Do you have another GPS equipped device that shows satellite lock? If so, your radio might be dead.

I was afraid of that and I think it is. I just rooted my friends phone and everything works fine. Also I have a Blue Force Tracker(US Army advanced GPS monitoring computer, in laymans terms) and that is working fine. I'm gonna un-root and hope i can get an exchange with t-mobile. I've only had the phone for a month or two.
Just got off the phone with android support from t-mobile. It's funny when you relize you know as much them and then some at times. This place is great.
But back to the main point. I told them the GPS is out, and I have re-flashed the OS(i left out the root and other than t-mobile os's part). Final answer from the rep, we will send you a new phone, sorry yours broke. So that's it for that. JF and TheDudes ROM's had nothing to do with it. Just a bad model I got. Now to un-root...
I just reflashed my phone with stock JF1.51 to clear out some cruft from past experimentation. Upon loading up my complement of apps from the Market (including the 3.1.0 Maps app) I opened Maps and noticed it would not lock onto GPS with a clear view of the sky.
I was able to fix it by opening settings and turning off the Use Wireless Networks option then opening maps again. After it got the first GPS lock, I turned the Use Wireless Networks option back on. All is fine.
Might wanna try that out? It's worth giving a shot.
I don't know what happened but i have reflashed my phone over 5 times today. I was trying to put apps2sd back on JF1.51(skipped a step and bricked it, twice lol) and now it is working again. Strange.
So this is sort of a multipurpose post, just saying some of the issue I have had with my Vibrant, and some of the possible solutions or at least information that I believe will help toward finding a solution.
About the GPS, this is what I have noticed:
I am pretty sure this is a software issue and this is why- I've noticed that I only have a problem when I am using the actual GPS and the network based location. I started to notice this first in Foursquare. Even when I could get a lock in Maps (albeit with a blue circle indicating it wasn't terribly accurate) Foursquare would always show where I last checked in... then I realized it wasn't showing where I last checked in, it was showing where I last was located using the GPS. I found that if I turned off the "Use GPS satellites" option, and only used the network location option, Foursquare (and indeed any other GPS program) got my location near instantly. Similarly, when I had only the satellite option checked (and not the network location) as long as I was outside I got a pretty quick and steady lock. When I put both options back on... everything all crappy again. So I've been keeping the actual GPS off unless I'm using navigation, in which case I switch, and I haven't had an issue yet. So I think this is something that they can fix in an update. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.
In regard to Social Network Sync:
It was driving me nuts that half the time I looked in the settings menu it would show that Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter (the Samsung variants) had "errors." Then I realized that for whatever stupid reason, they seem to only run into these errors on wifi. If I turned wifi off and synced... it worked. Turned it back on... didn't work. I tried this a few times. However, that said, the Social Network Sync is kind of broken. For example, even if you have it set to download all of your Facebook friends, after the first time it won't. To add them, you have to go into "Link contact, Get Friends, Facebook" and then check who you want to add .This is kind of annoying, and hopefully will also be fixed with a software update. Again, any thoughts would be appreciated.
About Flash:
This is honestly my biggest issue with the device. If you look in the applications it does have Flash lite. It just doesn't work. Coming from an almost flawless Flash experience on the MyTouch Slide to this is really not fun. The reason this annoys me so much though is because in apps that utilize the browser (for example NewsRob) whenever they load a page that has flash on it, you are kicked into the browser and get an error message (webkit error, file not found or some such.) When I'm browsing through articles in NewsRob it's incredibly annoying to have this stupid error message (which opens the browser, then an error, so it takes three back presses to get back to the article, all of which have a little delay.) Again, this is something that 2.2 should fix, but it's still frustrating. If anyone knows of any possible solution to this it'd be greatly appreciated.
Screen burn in I discovered today.
Much to my dismay, I noticed today that the clock digits were burnt into the screen, much like how the notifications were burnt into the screen on my Nexus One. The difference is that this took awhile to happen on my N1. Not three weeks like I've had the Vibrant. I don't know if this is permanent or just temporary, I have a pure white background open full screen right now, and will run like a color flashing thing next, hopefully this will get rid of it. If not... that's just excessively disappointing. I love love love having what is literally the most advanced screen technology in existence, and having a literally perfect black level, but screen burn in on a few week old device (that has been set at low or auto brightness since day one) is just not acceptable. I will post again after a day or so of white screen/colors and let ya'll know the results. But it's frustrating. Has any one else noticed this yet? Or have any other possible solutions?
Lastly, lag.
I've noticed that the ONLY lag on the device comes from stupid TouchWiz and the Buddies and Feeds widgets. With them disabled the device FLIES. With them on, it's slow and occasionally has to be force closed. For now I have the widgets in question disabled, but this is vastly annoying, and really makes me wish I had my MyTouch Slide back (except with this screen and processor lol.)
So, in conclusion, I generally love this device. But the second T-Mobile announces The MT3GHD, it'll be on eBay faster than you can say Android 2.2 with Espresso lol.
Quick update, jscreenfix app from market fixes the burn in, I let it run for about an hour. I'm going to do that every week just to be safe.

Even though I personally believe the gps is a firmware/driver issue, your explanation above does nothing to narrow it to that... You say the GPS doesnt work right when it is turned on...
well... yeah.

In Location settings, there are two options, Use wireless network and Use GPS satellites. What I am saying is that if BOTH of these options are turned on, it doesn't seem to work properly. If I only use wireless networks, it works (even indoors) but isn't terribly accurate. If I use GPS only, and I am outside, it works, accurately. So I am just saying there seems to be some disconnect between the wireless network location and GPS location working in sync like they normally do.
And (@lemarg) I don't see how my post is whining, I'm just pointing out some observations about the issues I (and other people) been having with the phone. Maybe I misunderstand the point of a forum.
I just noticed that my GPS icon is visible at the top of my notification bar. I haven't installed any new programs since flashing the firmware, so I am not sure what is making the GPS turn on right now. And I just rebooted my phone this morning. I haven't rebooted again to see if it comes back--I want to see how long it stays there. But it has been there for five minutes or so now. Is there a way to see what app has told the phone to make the GPS active?
By the way, does anyone else think the new firmware requires a longer, more deliberate swipe to wake up the phone after tapping the power button?
um... I have the new firmware, and the GPS icon is not persistent.
I run stock, and the GPS will kick in at times, no idea why. It's not persistent though.

If you have adb enabled, and can run adb logcat when the GPS kicks in and see what running process that might be accessing this?
Even I have the same problem.
Is it the plus sign inside a rhombus with signal strength to the right side of it??
My fascinate got updated 2 days ago and ever since the sign appears on my status bar.
Also, after the update I am not able to connect my phone to my Mac. Its not able to mount the disk.
Please help !!!
Thanks,
DJ
I like ka5 too.. the heptic feedback is still notworking right but ill keep this firmware until the official one comes..
This was happening to me on JL5. Turns out it was ShopSavvy barcode scanner (Big In Japan). I promptly uninstalled. Just a thought...
Hi guys, thanks to those out there i have successfully installed DJ05 modem and rom on my fascinate.
However, i have questions on how the GPS is actually fixed..
Before the update, i have had 1second lock on on my GPS with wifi GPS both on..
However, i had thought that the upgrade was going to do this without the WIFI...
I dont know if this is the case for the rest of the fascinate owners out there.
Could any of you please provide me the insight as to what i might have done wrong?
In my method of installing i didnt delete cache because i didnt bother backing up my applications..
anyway
my step was:
1. install modem through odin,
2. install rom and kernel through recovery mode
Please help me out
Thanks again.
The reason GPS seems to "lock on" instantly when connected to (some) Wi-Fi hotspots is because the location of that particular hotspot is already known by Google.
DJ05 fixes the 5-10+ minute lock ons that many people suffered from, but you shouldn't expect it to give you instant lock-ons. There are a *lot* of variables that can affect how long a GPS lock takes, so depending on your location and surroundings, lock-time can still vary significantly. Mine's taken 30 seconds to a minute for an accurate position sometimes. Other times, it's taken 5 seconds.
Mine still sucks when I flash new kernels it seems to work better for a bit then stops completely.
I have tried just about everything and still no go
So I just did it and it took 4 minutes. My d1 would do it in 10 sec so did my DX.
But it did get a pretty accurate reading lol
Keep an eye on your GPS icon. Every so often for me it doesn't change into the "getting signal, or GPS lock" icon when i boot into maps. When this happens i get crappy lock or it takes forever to get a lock. This doesn't happen often, but when it does a reboot will cure it.
I'm sure that one of the reasons whey we've not seen DJ05 officially from VZW is because it's not perfect. I'm guessing this is part of the "not perfect" that kept them from pushing it OTA. Either way, it's a HUGE improvement over what we had before and over just about every other Galaxy S phone out there.
I see..
well when i am on the navigation app by google,
i have it on the bottom saying that its still searching for gps for a quite a while.
I think it doesnt show my location uner 1 minute.
I guess there isnt foolproof workaround for the GPS yet.
I guess ill keep my hopes up for something better later.
Thanks again for all the replies
