replacing system files - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

a few days ago i posted a question about turning a update.zip file to an .apk file. it worked but i couldnt install the live wallpaper because it was trying to overwrite a system file (the stock nexus LWP). im not familiar with adb so i tried using root explorer to delete the original file and replace it with the .apk of the wallpaper i wanted. unfortunately it didnt work. can someone provide the steps necessary to replace a system file like a stock wallpaper with a custom one? it would be a big help.

did you delete or just overwrite the original file?

Couldn't get the problem, same as asked by Chugga.......you can't delete or overwrite/merge the existing file??
BTW: I'm using ESFile explorer and enabled "Root explorer" and "Mount File System" in settings/root settings and never had any issues modifiying system content.
Cheers.....LinChina

Correct, either rename the original file or delete it.

I think this is more of a developer problem, i believe he has an apk file which replaces files. Like an update.zip file replaces files he turned his into an apk. But in order for the apk to overwrite system files you must call su permissions in the onCreate method.

Oh, I thought he turned a flashable.zip with a live wallpaper into and installable apk.
What is the reason behind making an flashable.zip into an apk?

Speaking of real help. Have to figure out this problem with an updater script that is causing a bootloop now.

Figured it out. There were some Syntax errors, some undefined locations, and an unsigned apk. All is well now.

That is the first thing I did. It first asked confirmation for replacing a system app. When I gave 'Ok' it says 'Application not installed'. Because of this only I tried copying the files to system/app folder.

This is not the one. I'm talking about the Nexus One's default wallpaper, which will be available in LG P500's stock froyo ROM also. I think it will be available in the first set of apks you provided. But I'm facing the issue of installing.
Anyway thanks for your help mate. I'll try to install those apks somehow.
Try Nexus Revamped Pro on Market.
And what about Microbes live wallpaper from Nexus? It has been ported to SGS, so is it possible to have this in OO?

try renaming the name or extension (so that you still have the file there in case anything goes wrong) and then try installing the apk. i had to do that for one of my system apps

Did you copy the zip from /cache - and check it out?
A patch file (eg: market.p)? Or the full apk? Does it touch anything else? What build is listed in Settings > About ?
Just unrooted - reverted to pure stock - updated to 55D - rerooted - rebuilt my framework - yadda yadda - on Sunday. Hope I don't need to go through all that again..
how do copy it and view the files? it's downloaded, i just haven't installed it
i haven't rooted yet so i don't have all the options of root file explorer at the momment.
Just got this as well, not sure what it changed.

Install a File Manager if you dont already have one and check /cache.
Since you aren't rooted you may not be able to see it. Check anyway. If you can, use the file manager to copy it to your sdcard and please upload it for us.

That's what we'd like to know. If you're rooted, copy the .zip file from /cache to a handy location or your PC and explore inside the zip.
The update is first downloaded to /cache. A long name with HTK75D somewhere and ending in .zip.
Is there a /patch folder in the zip? All the files in that branch are patched by the updater. The files must be the latest stock version to get patched.
Is there a /system and/or /recovery folder in the zip? All the files in those branches get copied - and older ones on the Xoom are overwritten.
Drill down the /META-INF branch all the way. You'll find "updater-script". This is the command file which guides the whole update process - and tells us everything it is doing.
If there is a bootloader.bin file in the zip's root - we'll be flashed a new bootloader - which could break custom kernels and usually generates some apprehension (guilty until proven innocent).

I've never checked, but for those who aren't rooted, the filename might be logged. Could anyone who recently downloaded the update (but hasn't installed/rebooted yet) check LogCat to see if the filename is there? It should look something like this:
############.signed-tervigon-HTK75D-from-HTK55D.########
(pound signs represent hexadecimal digits)
If it's there, then this might help others manually download the update from the OTA site:
http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/motorola_tervigon/<update package filename>
(I think )
Thanks!
i got the update to my rooted 3g xoom w/ custom rom. i looked at the zip and it does indeed have boot stuffz. so im not going to install it. if anyone wants a copy my email is my username @ gmail. i dont have an upload site to send it to, email if you're interested.

S'all right. 55s a benign update - we're still not sure what it fixed (or broke). If you are still stock - though rooted - use Stachre's update method in the dev section. Then you'll be ready for 75.
yeah 55 was the update from a week ago, google is dropping another one on us.

ROM problems thread

Hi everyone, I'm making this so that any problems with ROMS can be discussed here, and any associated fixes. This way we don't clutter the actual ROM threads and all the problems/fixes are in one place. :good:
I'll start it off.
I just ported over a 4.1.2 ROM but the soft keyboard FC's literally every 5 seconds. Any ideas? I tried pulling a logcat from the computer and it says "Unable to open log device '/dev/log/main': No such file or directory
Attached is a screenshot.
I'm gonna try to install a different keyboard from the playstore and see if that one works.

I had that same problem on one of my first ICS ports, just sub it out for any of the working ones on the Shift. Don't forget to switch out the lib too.
I would say the same thing as ryan, as far as the keyboard is concerned.
And as far as the logcat problem, the only time i have ever had that error was when it was a bad flash. Googling the error gives you a bunch of different reasons this error could happen. I doubt it is a kernel problem, as some sites suggests, because I'm guessing you are using one of the kernels we already have and none of the other roms have the same problem. So I would look into one of the other suggestions that pop up when googling.
Yeah, I'll look into it when I get home today. And i know it cant be a bad flash because i wiped 10 times before flashing it.

Well i think I found the error. I found a post on stackoverflow that led me to the etc/init.d folder...and in one of the files there I found this
Code:
rm /dev/log/main
Now why that was in there, i have no idea. Hopefully that fixes that part and then I'll just swap out the soft keyboard and Latin_ime.so to fix the AOSP keyboard and all should be good....so if all goes well, expect a new port in the dev section :good:

Really easy, replace the apk with one that you know works... For this example we'll use the 4.2 keyboard from my ROM. Delete both the apk and the libjniLatin_IME.so from system/lib. Replace with the working apk and the corresponding lib (libjniLatin_IMEgoogle.so or something close to that) and rezip. If that doesn't work see if you can get a flashable like the Xperia T keyboard to work after boot. If that doesn't work, there is probably a major problem.

Did the logcat tell you anything about the error? Most times it will mention the lib missing. Even if you see it there it may be the wrong version, and you would need to grab it from the port.

[Q] HELP from STOCK ROM Users [Modifying TouchWiz30Launcher.apk]

Good day developers, can you help me, Im using STOCK ROM DXMA1 (deodexed). I want to modify my "TouchWiz30Launcher.apk", instead of 4 icon Column dock, I want to make it 5. I follow this guide somehow, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668984 but it didn't help me. It made my "touchwiz30Launcher.apk" 5 docks but when I put the other application(last time it was 4 and now it turns 5, 4+1=5) on DOCK, the application disappear. Then I tried following this guide again, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500230 although it is for Galaxy Ace, I think it is similar somehow with SGY (note: I only did was, PART II number 1 and 2.)Then the problem in my first try modifying the TouchWiz30Launcher.apk is similar with the second one. Guys if you know, can you help me with this problem or guide me or if there are some similar questions/forum post like this that had been answered, kindly post it? Help me please.
did you install it as a system app?
try removing the classes.dex from original to the modified one,
also was the app compiling process a success?

Native Hotspot Assistance

Once a deodexed rom is released it will be easier to test the hotspot mod out. Because not having the phone would require someone else that can Odex the files and test. This would be a pain because you would have to do that for each test. For now I am curious about something though. Is there anyone out there with the S5 that is paying for the hotspot? If so can you configure it and connect to it at least once, if you haven't already, and send me your services.jar and services.odex? You will probably need to be rooted in order to get to the files. Don't worry there won't be any sensitive information in the files.
I tried the mod you posted, same as was done on Note 2. Not sure if it worked or not as the build had some data issues, so couldnt comnect to test. It compiled and booted fine with the line deletion at least. Was easy enough to find
Gettin frustrated with getting the deodexed working to move on. Have some issues ive never seen before. Just Play store, Hangouts and Google Calendar sync FC's. Think its a GmsCore issue

Thank you. Could you Odex your hotspot mod and try it with either your rom or stock to see if it works? If it works on Odex then you know it will work on deodexed once it is ready.
To get the native hotspot working, you need to:
update carriers set type="default,mms,dun" where apn="n.ispsn";
in the following file:
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
This is what worked for me on Sprint North America. Just got it working today, was trying all the known tricks including rebuilding framework-res.apk with no luck. Be advised however I first used a sqlite app from the market and it added a space between mms and dun which did not work. I installed the sqlite3 binary and did that SQL command from adb shell. Can do more of a walk through if needed, let me know.
Edit: miked63017 beat me to it. Here's his flashable zip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52089811&postcount=9

Isn't this the same thing that Mike provided? If so you should give him the credit. And his flashable zip is probably safer and cleaner than replacing the database file.

His zip is admittedly different than the zip I made, mine runs a sqlite command in place, while his copies a premade db into place. Either way, lets get some feedback on how this thing is working...

Yeah but it is using the mod that you discovered. So you should be credited. And my other point is that your zip only adds the portion of the mod that is required. His replaces the entire db file which could cause issues.

It's not a big problem. I knew your zip was different. My only point is that Mike published the method of unlocking the hotspot first. So he should have been credited for finding the fix. That's it. You could have kept your zip alive if you wanted to. Although I still believe his install is safer.

Because his zip only does a sql update for the specific change that is required. You're zip replaces the entire db file. Nothing may ever come of that. But if a user had a db file which had different contents than the one you provide they would lose those changes. There is also a very slight possibility that permissions on that file could get corrupted when replacing it. Highly unlikely though. I'd be more concerned about the first possibility.

Ah, that makes sense now. Thanks.
lil update crawrj, the method we used the Note 2 doesnt fly on here. just tested on new Deodexed build. says I'm not subscribed...
and what do you know. I'm not
Would be a good idea to decompile sectelephonyprovider and see if those values in the database file can't be forced as default for all additions that have that apn field
